Forced upgrade caused me to lose my albums and lots of photos

hello
i store most of my photos (about 7,000) on an external hard drive. last night i went to look for some specific photos, which were in various albums. i did this by starting iphoto with the option key held down, and "telling" iphoto to find my library in that location. a warning came up telling me that iphoto needed to update the library in order to open it. so i did. now when i go to that external hard drive, all the albums are missing. and lots of the photos are missing too! the albums are still located on my computer's iphoto location, but they are empty because i transferred all the photos that were in them to the external location.
before i upgraded, everything was in place on the external hard drive - all my photos, located in their appropriate albums. now, no albums, many missing photos. HELP!

it did tell me i needed to upgrade, and the supposed upgrade took about 1/2 hr.
here are some answers to your questions:
(indiscriminately move files (and/or folders) from the iPhoto Library folder.)
i moved the entire photo library to an external HD, rather than separate folders
(Moving an album folder in Finder doesn't do anything other than make it impossible for iPhoto to find those links it expects to find.)
i never moved any albums to another location, just the entire library folder
(started iPhoto while holding the option key to select a different "album".)
i opened iphoto w/ option key down to select another iphoto library. i do this so i can "point" iphoto to the external HD location, where the enire library is stored.
i have 3 libraries - one on my laptop, two each on separate hard drives.
i also have some new info, which may make this discussion a non issue - when i open iphoto and direct it to external hard drive #2 - my entire library of photos shows up, including all the albums. (WHEW!) i'd like to know why iphoto responds completely differently when i direct it to HD#1, but we do not have to research this since i have a good backup. if not, this will just be another weird computer mystery to me. regardless, thanks for your time!

Funny you should ask... At about the same time that the Xserve was discontinued, we also lost our channel rep of nearly 14 years. Right now we are not sure who our rep is. I have however, sent this to as many people in Apple that I could think of. And I plan on continuing to reach out to as many as possible.
The sad reality is that this decision is impacting customer deployments and the future of customer installations. Apple strives for market share and loves to tout those numbers. But the numbers we fought for over these last eight years are going to disappear.
As much as this impacts our business, we are making up for it in enterprise deployment of systems. We will survive and lead in our geographic area. I do not fear that. But OS X Server is a UNIX server and with it has come all of the benefits of a UNIX system, including legitimacy in a data center. The Intel Xserve cemented this reality because of its hardware configuration and form factor. Yes, we have G4 and G5s still in service. But those are mostly in all Mac shops that understand the benefits and can work around the buzz word limitations. But fortune 100/500 IT departments did not really get on board until the release of the Intel server.
Still beating the drum to raise awareness. Spread the word and talk to your Apple reps.
Also, ask about the direction that Apple's Enterprise team is going. If the news I hear is correct, then our fears about all things pro and enterprise going away are likely true.

IPhoto6 Upgrade deleted my Albums and lost many photos

I just upgraded to iPhoto6. When I ran iPhoto6 for the first time, it converted the iPhoto5 library. It also said that it found several photos in the Picture folder that were not in the libray. It found some duplicates and asked if I wanted to import the duplicates. I said no. When the process was finished, all my albums disappeared. How do I get them back?
Then several photos were missing and had many duplicates. I do have a backup of my Photo folder. But everytime I try the upgrade, I get the same mess. How do people succesfully upgrade and maintain albums and all their photos?

Were the photos stored on your iPad or in iCloud.

In IPhoto 11 I have made an album and rearrange the photos in the order I require them. When export the album to allow me to burn them to disk to be viewed in Windows they do not maintain the same order. What am I doing wrong?

When you sort the Album in iphoto are you sorting manually? Or by date of the photos?
When you sort in the Finder how are are you sorting?
Here's one way to do what you're trying to do:
Create your Album and sort the pics as you want them. Then Photos Menu: Batch Change -> Set Title to Text "John's Birthday", for instance, and tick the box to append a number to each Photo. Now your photos are titled 'John's Birthday 001, John's Birthday 002 ... etc'
Then File -> Export and in the Export dialogue set the Filename to "Use Title"
Sort on Filename in the Finder and you end up with a folder full of images in the same order as the Album in iPhoto.

If you've used your phone as recommened you've imported your photos into iPhoto or to another folder on your PC.

Did you restore the iCloud backup of your 4s to your 5s?

"Strange Situation" error in AE CC 2014 (Just upgraded) caused me to lose an entire day of effects work. Very angry, and I want answers. Have to deliver tomorrow. (Error 939524096)

Here is my file. Seems to be corrupted. No Auto Save was made eventhough AE is configured to save one. Seemed to happen in the middle of things, while I was switching between Premiere CC 2014 and After Effects CC 2014 (Dynamic Linking). Was working perfectly fine until randomly the program crashed and Dynamic Link in Premiere lost access to the upwards of FIFTY COMPOSITIONS I had worked on.

I don't mean to be cruel here, but you lost a client because you didn't have a efficient and safe workflow set up. I never do anything without saving files in versions about every 10 to 20 minutes. If your files are getting corrupted every time you save them then you got to analyze your project and figure out what you are doing that is causing the corruption. Work for 10 or 15 minutes, save the file, open the file, save it as a different version then start again when you're having problems. Here's the most important part of business advice I can give you. As soon as you have any indication that there may be something wrong, contact your client. Don't make excuses, don't blame the software, take full responsibility and just explain that you need more time or something in the project needs to change. I have never had a client refuse to give me some leeway or refuse to make adjustments to the project that would allow it to be completed on time.

Remote desktop connection caused host to lose a monitor and other settings

After a successful remote desktop login, on the host I can now no longer detect the 2nd monitor. Screen resolution on remaining monitor is off, it's gone over to use Microsoft Basic Display Adapter even though it was using the correct adapter previously.
Both previously working display adapters now show Code 12 error: "this device cannot find enough free resources that it can use". The system has also become very slow, when I right-click the desktop, it takes up to 30 sec for the menu to appear.
Anyone had a problem like this? I have restarted the computer several times, reverted system to a working state last week, done another successful remote desktop login/logout from my laptop to this computer.

Intel R HD Graphics 4600

This error message can also appear if the BIOS did not allocate enough resources to the device, I want to know how much RAM do you have on your computer, because the Display Adapter calls for extra RAM to run the monitor.
If you don’t have enough RAM to allocate, the monitor won’t start, that’s why the computer becomes very slow.
Here I suggest a possible solution:
Adjust the amount of memory dedicated to video/graphics. You can change that in BIOS. there might be an option in your PC's BIOS that lets you change the amount of system memory used for video/graphics.
You'll just need to find it in the BIOS, the BIOS options in the Advanced settings,
the option varies depends on the BIOS version
you can set the maximum memory that it can take to a lowest value.

What causes iPhone to lose all contacts, and how can I stop it happening again?

iPhone 3gs, still running 5.1.1 because I actually rely on the mapping software.
A few days back, it started randomly exiting various apps for no reason. Today, I tried powering off and re-starting, but when it re-started it had erased all contacts.
Last backup was a couple days before, so I won't have lost anything crucial, but this is the first such disaster since bying the phone 3 years ago. I see numerous complaints about this, and no real solution or explanation offered from Apple. I figure it's about time to replace my phone, so this will be a test: either there will be a clear explanation and a solution, or I'll switch to Android.

What are you syncing them WITH? Do NOT say iTunes. iTunes is NOT a contact manager.
If you're syncing them with your computer, your choices are MS Outlook or Windows Address Book on a PC, and Contacts / Address Book on a Mac.
If you are not syncing your contacts with a contact manager or cloud service, you are NOT syncing your contacts.

Automatic creation of photo album and mixing of photos post sync

i am facing a very unexpected issue:
- once I start syncing my iphone 5 with my laptop the below issue arises
   ~ there are around 7000 photos under 21 folders and size of all album is around 6GB (only photos and I don't sync videos)
   ~ the itunes starts by syncing all the albums available by creating it on the iphone
   ~ however, the photos don't get get sync in one go (so it breaks the total photos packs as 4500-2000-500 to sync all 7000 photos and I need to sync it three times)
   ~ to reslove this issue, I have deleted all photos and again synced multiple times and changed the data cable already
   ~ it has twice happened that some of the album didn't show up and the photos didn't sync also
   ~ after using it for sometime, on the iPhone, there are recreation of albums first with the same name and photos from different albums get mixed and be a part under different albums (when I check on the iTunes - the size of the total album doesn't change though)
   ~ the original albums remain intact with the right photos initially but over a period of sometime, their photos also get jumbled up automarically and in the end I would get to see around 45-50 photo albums (with original album being duplicated twice or thrice and Atleast 2-3 times the number of original photos being jumbled up and lying in different album groups)
   ~ however there is no change in the size of the photos on iTunes and if I sync it further, more album duplication happens
i have deleted all photos from iPhone numerous time and re-synced it but it doesn't work
i have changed the data cable but it remains the same
i have deleted the full folder on my laptop with the ipod cache and re-sync it but still it doesn't work
My phone is always updated to the latedt software update (iOS 8.3 and whatever updates are there on iTunes or other applications)
this has started happening after iOS 8 update and specially with the introduction of 'recently deleted' folder on the photo app And the above picks great speed if I edit / delete photos from my camera
this could also be some bug or error and since there is no option to my best of understanding to delete and re-install the default photo app, I am finding hugely difficult to fix up the issue and seek advise

so total of my photos on iphoto are 1768, and i tried delete some of it, and when i sync back, i though oh maybe the space isnt enough ( worth to try though, cz i really dont know whats wrong) and instead of sync correctly, ITS NOT!!! its now sync only for 1683 photos, while on iphoto contains 1717 photos, and please i have 5,5 gb free space at the moment!
* i actually dont know how I gain so much free space after backup and restoring.

I click on a picture in my photo album and a different photo comes up how can I sort the problem out?

Photos go to opposite ends of the timeline when flagging, causing me to lose my place

Hey everyone,
I'm using 5.4 and whenever I flag a photo (as 'Pick' or 'reject') it puts them at either end of my timeline, and instantly jumps me there. This causes me to lose my place, and I'm editing about 1800 photos from a concert so you can imagine how annyoing this is.
I've looked online for a solution, and gone through menu trees, but I can't find anything

Change your sort order to something else than what you have it set as.

Albums and books disappear

Our school is using network home folders and iPhoto 8. Since the upgrade we have a lot of students who will lose there albums and books in iPhoto. They have disappeared while the student actually has iPhoto open. We have tried rebuilding the library with no luck. The only thing we can do is restore there iPhoto from tape backup and that way they lose any work they had done since the last backup.

No we have not upgraded the student computers to 10.5 as of yet. The issue started when we upgraded them to iLife 8. It would appear that it is database corruption, however I find it hard to believe that they would not build in a transaction system to keep partial updates from happening due to connection loss or other things that may interrupt the writing process.

Viewing one photo at a time and adding that photo to an album

Typically I import photos from my camera into events, and then I take the best photos from the event and put them into an album named after that "event"
To do this quickly, I usually want to see the photo full screen (I just double click on a photo in an event and click next to browse)to check for quality, and then drag that photo to the album. For some reason you can't drag the single photo you're viewing to an album?
Any ideas? I hate having to open the photo, look at it, close it, then drag it to the album

Since you can't drag a photo when viewing in the large mode you can try the following:
1 - make sure the Info drawer on the right side is displayed.
2 - click on a photo and hit the Space bar.
3 - click on the Full Screen button at the lower left.
Now you're in full screen mode with the Info drawer at the right.
4 - either set the rating of the photo to one that you can use to group in a smart album (Command-1 for 1 star, Command-2 for 2 starts, etc.) or add a keyword that can also be used to group the photos in a smart album.
5 - use the right or left arrow keys on the keyboard to move to the next or previous photos.
6 - when complete go to the smart album and drag the photos into a regular album.
