Form VS Servlets/JSP

Hi Portal Gurus,
I am very new to Oracle Portal. I am reading Portal documents and have a question.
For an insert/update/delete kind of operation, what should one choose, Oralce Forms or Jsp/Servlet?
What criteria decide the choice?

Jsp / servlet and portal forms cannot be compared as there can be many things in them which you can design as per your requirements.Oracle form provides you 3 different ways of inerating with the database,it can be Form based on tables , MD forms and Form based on procedure.
As far as you requirements shows that you simply want to Insert/Update or delete data that is very much possible with oracle portal forms and then you will have the option of publishing these forms as portlets on your page.

I never used DynaActionForm, what I have noticed here is, don't you need to declare the form bean? I may be wrong.

Uploading File To MySQL from HTML form via Servlet

Hello all !
I hope this is better place to ask.
I'm working on simple Servlet/Jsp application trying to hold to MVC pattern and got stuck on uploading file to MySQL db.
Here's what I'm trying to accomplish:
1) client submits a JPEG image via a simple html form on a webpage.
2) JPEG is put into a database table, column field of type BLOB.
3) Servlet processes the request, gets a connection to the db and inserts the image into the table.
4) after that user is able to retrieve an image from db and display it in JSP page.
This is pretty much the same task Angela was trying to do here:

I could use her snippets if i knew what is what and decided to figure out this myself. Aftet some investigation i found out that i need to import org.apache.commons.fileupload.*;which i found here: http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/fileupload/
what am i driving at ?

Is it actually good idea to store images in db as blob ?
what about large ammounts of text ?

is it a reason for concern ?Yes.
You should take a look at the method in the documentation and find out exact reason for depricating it.
If it is depricated becouse they going to remove it in the future you should use the new alternative method becouse if you use the old method your app will not work in the future releases of the API.
If it is depricated becouse it is not safe to use the method you should clearly understand the risks involved in using the method and see if that can give you any trouble in your project.

blob ?I think that it is ths best option available when you want to store binary data
what about large ammounts of text ?You can use clob columns.
By the way when you store files in the database its better you put some extra columns to store the file name and file type(mime) becouse you cant directly detect those things later by just looking at the data of the file.

Javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Cannot find FacesContext

Hello All,
I was trying to create a simple JSF page (Welcome.jspx )(please find code bellow) .But it is always giving the following error:
javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Cannot find FacesContext
The error appears though i am calling the page with the faces servlet (http://128.128.5.64:8989/GradeEntry/faces/Infrastructure/Welcome.jspx)!!
I have searched all possible forums on the Internet and tried their suggestions with no luck...My web.xml configuration contains the right Faces Servlet Mapping :

actually this mapping only identifies those requests to be handled by teh JSF servlet. Its not a redirect.
I see several namespace definitions in your page, but no taglib reference. Wondering how this is supposed to work

Having problems compiling *.java with import javax.servlet.jsp......

I've been trying to do the tutorials in a book titled Apache Jakarta-Tomcat as part of my introduction to JSP. I'm new to Java but do know the basics. I have on my machine Java 1.3, Java 1.4, Java FrameWorks 2.1 and Jython 2.1 on Win2000 Pro. So enough about my configuration. I have never worked with packages also.
I downloaded the files from the books site due to the fact I make a lot of typos when hand coding Java (I've become a pretty good debugger of my own code). But everytime I go to compile the *.java I get error messages. So below you will find HelloTag.java and beneath that the error messages that are thrown when I try and compile it. I tested other bits of *.java and have had no problem compiling them. Is there a JSP module I'm missing?
Am I doing something wrong or am I missing something from my configuration.

Well, it looks like you've not got the servlet development kit JAR on your classpath. I think it'll probably be called servlet.jar on your system. Add that to the classpath if it's not already there.
Incidentally, you've bumped into one of the areas Java's slightly lenient - declaring a method that looks like a constructor:
public HelloTag() { }
public void HelloTag() { }The first is a constructor, the second is a normal method. I'm assuming you intended to have the former instead of the latter.

ADF Security: javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Cannot find FacesContext

Hi,
In my ADF Application, new users are to be allowed to Register by clicking a button in login page. The Application is based on ADF Security Wizard and I have created default pages for Login and Error, so the application's login page is login.html.
Now when I’m trying to navigate to 'NewUserRegistrationPage.jspx' Im getting javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Cannot find FacesContext error.
I thought the issue might be from calling a .jspx from .html so I created a 'NewLogin.jspx' Page with below code and specified this page in ADF Security Wizard for Login Page.
Please advice me some way of calling the 'newRegistrationpage.jspx' from my login page.
Im using JDeveloper 10.1.3.4.

Hi Branislav,
Thanks a lot for your suggestion through which now Im able to navigate to NewRegistration page from login.html.
In my application login.html is under public_html folder where as the NewRegistration page in public_html/WebPages.
Code I used:
New User Registration
But the issue now is, the NewUserRegistrationPage was also under the ADFSecurity, so inorder to navigate to it again the user had to provide authentication. So, I have removed this particular page from Security and it has started to work.
But the issue now I face is something else. In the NewUserRegistrationPage I have a selection to be made by user about the type of user he is and based on the selection he would be navigated to next page, This next page has a VO on it as a 'create form', through which he can directly fill the form and submit his details to database table.
But as I have removed these pages from ADF Security and authentication, the form fields/attributes in the VO are not getting binded, Im getting this Exception:
500 Internal Server Error
javax.faces.el.PropertyNotFoundException: Error testing property 'inputValue' in bean of type null
For testing purpose when I have provided link from application page to NewRegistrationPage the flow is working properly, able to navigate to second page and submit the filled form to database, I think this is working because we have entered the application after providing the login credentials.'
Help in this greatly needed.

Servlet/jsp problem

hello i am using netbeans to create a simple login system using a servlet and a jsp. the jsp has the following code:

the servlet name is login and located under src/java/login.java
however when i run it its just giving me this msg that it cannot find the servlet:

message Servlet login is not available
description The requested resource (Servlet login is not available) is not available.
does anyone know what the problem might be?

How have you defined this servlet in your web.xml ?
For example it should be something like this:

        <servlet-class>servletpackagename.ServletClassName</servlet-class>

        <servlet-name>SomeServletAlias</servlet-name>

    </servlet-mapping>If you have the URL Pattern as: /servleturlpattern , then in your form's action put action="/servleturlpattern" and not action="servleturlpattern"
Where ever you reference the servlet, the URL for the servlet should match exactly as you specify it in the URL-Pattern. Otherwise it wont work.

Accessing values of components in a form in a JSP function

I have a peculiar problem. I want to access the value of a textbox in my JSP method. Please let me know how to do that.
The code is

the variable filepath should be the value taken from a text field.

Well JSP is server side code and TextBoxes are html which is client side script. To get the value of an html Textbox you either can use Javascript and do it all client side or you can post your form to a JSP or servlet and use request.getParameter("field_name"); to get the value of the form field.

But some times I get this Error ONLY on 10AS server Rele 2

Ejb + servlet + jsp

Hallo everybody,
i try to develop an application with servlet jsp and ejbs but i don't have enough information about this thema.
for example i want to make a simple login szenario :
user type the name and passwd and the system contact with the db and show a wellcome page if the login is succesfull and an error page if the login is unsuccessfull.
which component does was??
the first page can be a html form and post the name and passwd to a servlet.
in this case servlet can make a connection with the DB and can forward the user to next page or error page. BUT where should i use EJB? can i realize the db connection with ejb ? if yes how can interact the servlet with the ejb and how can i store the information (for example address of user) which i have taken from the DB?

i am calling servlet on submit button of form created in JSP.

Perhaps your version of the sun server is too old. SkipPageException exists since JSP 2.0 according to the javadocs.
