Formatting Drive to reinstall Tiger..

Hi,
I'm about to reformat my HD on my MacBook to reinstall Tiger. I've put the Tiger Install disk in and started up the installation.
Having restarted the machine, I select my language etc, I get the message:
Alert
This Software cannot be installed on this computer.
Would this be because:
A) I need to format my drive first... Obviously I can't install the Os when there is one already installed.
Or might it be..
B) The installation disc I'm using came with my Mac Pro, not my MacBook? I haven't got my MacBook Installation disc with me at Uni. I would normally just try formatting my drive and seeing what happens, but I don't want to do that and it turn out that the problem is B!
If it doesn't matter which disc I use then this isn't the issue... I presume formatting my drive will sort it.
Thanks!

Some software I got was acting a bit funny (on my Mac Pro), so was going to see if it was OK on Tiger or not. I don't use the laptop so much anymore, more for Live music stuff, so it's not an issue reformatting etc. Thought it was worth a try.
I'm going to try and revert to an earlier version of Leopard. Do I have to reformat and reinstall Leo to start from 10.5.1? or is there an easier way? Thanks
Unless you have a backup, you have to start from scratch with Leopard.
However, you should consider installing Tiger on an external drive. I have Tiger 10.4.11 on my TM drive and it runs fine. You can use it just as if it were on your internal drive and it's not much slower.

  • Saving Mail before erasing hard drive and reinstalling tiger

I might need to erase my hard disk and reinstall Tiger. I would like to keep my mail app how it is. Last time I tried syncing my Mail App to my online mail accounts not all the mail was downloaded to MAIL. Anyone know some ways to go about this.

First reinstalling Tiger is rarely necessary.
Second .Mac sync only syncs the rules and preferences for Mail. It does not sync messages.

  • Want to erase hard drive and reinstall Tiger- quick questions

I am giving my G4 to my son in a couple of days and it now has Classic on it. My plan is to erase the whole hard drive and install just Tiger. So my thoughts are:
1.) There are no settings I want/need to preserve. I have 4 Tiger CD's- is that the right number? I think I have them all but just want to make sure.
2.) Do I insert CD holding down the C key and from some point when the CD loads, I chose Disk Utility and wipe the hard drive then? Are there different choices for wiping the hard drive? Like the number of passes?
3.) And then is it just a simple matter of installing all 4 Tiger disks?
Any other tips, tricks, advice you can give me? Tomorrow's the big day (2/1)! Thanks so much, I am a bit nervous about this......... Judy

  • Format Drive and Reinstall Lion?

My Macbook Pro hard drive failed.  It is completely unrecoverable.  I've purchased a replacement.  How do I format the drive, install Lion and restore my system from my Time Machine backup?
My Time Machine backup was created from a USB connection directly to my Macbook Pro.
I have a Apple Lion USB Install Thumbdrive.
    Thanks;

You restart from the thumbdrive, use the Disk Utility on it to erase the drive, install Lion normally, and then migrate from the Time Machine backup when prompted.

  • Reinstalled tiger and have problems now

I erased the hard drive and reinstalled Tiger 10.4.6 on my MacBookPro. I can't get any of my files to go from my external hard drive to my laptop. They'll transfer, but as soon as I unplug my external and restart my laptop, they're gone. Anybody have any suggestions as to what I should do? I'm at my wits end and regretting wiping the hard drive fully, even though I know its too late to change it.
Also, now that I reinstalled the OS, do what system updates should I do (such as Combo updates and the such)?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi mango815;
You said; "They'll transfer, but as soon as I unplug my external and restart my laptop, they're gone.
Exactly how are you trying do these transfers? More details would be helpful in order for us to give you any possible solutions.

  • After replacing the hard drive on my G4 Powerbook and reinstalling Tiger I am no longer able to synch between itunes and itunes, it seems that the software on the ipod is of later date than itunes and I am unable to update itunes to the state prior..

After replacing the hard drive on my G4 Powerbook and reinstalling Tiger I am no longer able to synch between itunes and my ipod (Classic 160gb) it would seem that the software on the ipod is of later date than itunes and I am unable to update itunes to the state prior to the original harddrive's failure for Tiger OSX 10.4.11
Any ideas on the subject would be most helpful
    Thanks in advance

The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.4. The last version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.2.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac OS X Leopard and later.
So, are you on version 9.2.1?
Was it Tiger or Leopard you had on the drive before?

  • Can Tiger be installed on a formatted drive without losing data?

i have a mac OS formatted drive with tons of data on it that i use as a secondary storage device. my main HD just burnt out, and i was thinking of installing Tiger to the secondary drive. i know that if you install OS X on a drive that already has a previous version of the OS on it, you have the option to 'archive and install,' but this is not an option since the drive has no OS files on it. so my question is, if i choose the standard option of 'install OS X' from the install disk, will i lose my data from the drive?

As long as the drive was initialized as HFS+ (Mac Extended) you can install OSX without erasing the disk, but if that disk contains your only copy of important data you would be living dangerously. If something goes wrong (user error, software bug, power surge, hardware failure, etc.) you could lose everything.

Reduce data off of it so it's less than 80% filled, use a external drive.

  • I just reinstalled tiger and Now my firewire drives won't mount

    Here's the deal:
I just reinstalled Tiger 10.4.2 on my G4 sawtooth and now my firewire ports are gone. When I look at the Firewire bus in System Profiler, I just see the words: "Firewire Bus:" An that's it.
I have seriously searched thes forums and have tried everything Ihave found so far.
    I have tried:
1 - Unpluging everyhting, waiting 20 minutes, and rebooting
    2 - Resetting PRAM
    3 - Resetting Open Firmware
4 - disk utility disk repair on main volume when booted from install DVD (firewire drive does not show up disk Utility)
    5 - Repaired permissions
I'm pretty much dead in hte water without my Firewire Drive.
    Any Suggestions?
    Thanks - Dustin

Which OS? Post indicates 10.4.2 and configuration indicates 10.4.3 and 10.4.4. Try this. Disconnect all FW peripherals, shutdown, restart, reinstall 10.4.4 combo update, restart, launch Disk Utility, repair permissions, restart, open SysProfiler, click on Firewire, and ensure that it shows something like this for all your FW ports:
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown Device
    GUID: 0x0
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
If so, then rehook the FWHD cable and turn the power on. Relaunch SysProfiler and you should be good to go.

  • Cannot see files and folders on hard drive after reinstall of Tiger

    Hi all!
I just had to reinstall Tiger on my iMac G5 and when I look at my hard drive in Disk Utility it says I have 70000 some odd files and I've used 180GB of my hard drive but I haven't. I wiped it clean with zeroes before the reinstall, or so I thought. I can't see any of these "old" folders or files.
How do I reclaim this space?
    Thanks in advance!
    DW

Yes it was the MacIntosh HD volume.
I ended up recreating the partition booting with the OS X CD and using Disk Utility and then reinstalled Tiger. Now it works, and I have all my hard drive space available.
    Thanks!

  • Hi, I want to format my hard drive and reinstall my PC. How can I transfer my Acrobat Standard licence ? Regards.

    Hi,
I want to format my hard drive and reinstall my PC. How can I transfer my Acrobat Standard licence ?
    Regards.

First you should deactivate any Adobe programs you have installed so that you free up the activation for when you want to reinstall.  When you are ready to reinstall, do so using the installation files - transferring generally does not work.
Before you do anything you might want to check to make sure you have access to installation files for reinstalling the program(s).

  • Formated hard drive and reinstalled operating system

I recently formated my hard drive and reinstalled my operating system. There was some application and music that I purchased on my ipod touch that I forgot to backup. They are still on my IPOD but not on Itunes on my computer. Is there any way of getting these back?
    Thanks,
    Marckc

If you only want to copy your purchases to the computer that can be done using iTunes, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod Touch or iPhone. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer data (such as playcounts and ratings), movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well.

  • Reinstalling Tiger with an existing Windows partition

    Hi,
I have a MacBook with three partitions on the HD: one with Tiger on it, another NTFS-formatted with Windows, and a third FAT32-formatted with data on it. Unfortunately, I have to reinstall Tiger. Since bootcamp doesn't exist for Tiger anymore and I thus won't be able to reinstall Windows, I have to make sure the windows and the data partition are not touched. Also, I'm worried about the MBR; if the Tiger installer overwrites it, I'll have no way to boot into Windows, even if the installation is still valid. So, is there anything I have to pay attention to, is it even possible?
    Thanks.

Why reinstall Tiger? can't you just restore it from a backup clone?
Use your external drive to make an image of Windows, also, with WinClone, or invest in something for Windows to do clone/restore.
Seems like you had to have used something other than, or in addition to, BootCamp Assistant to begin with to have a three partition setup.
Last but not least, pick up Leo DVD 10.5.4.

  • Erase and reinstall tiger on ibook G4

    Hi,
I just bought a new macbook and am planning to sell my ibook G4.
I asked the one to one trainer about erasing everything on the drive and reinstalling the Tiger OS. He suggested I just do a clean install with the tiger discs and I wanted to do some erasing first. Basically what I did so far is to go to Disc Utility and run the "erase free space" 7 times. When I returned I discovered there are still docs in the HD.
So what is the next step to prepare the machine to erase everything before selling? Is this all I have to do to rid the computer of any trace of personal info. ? Also, once the drive is reinstalled will it be prompting me to sign in again as me and then I can check if everything is new?
    Thanks

Basically what I did so far is to go to Disc Utility and run the "erase free space" 7 times. When I returned I discovered there are still docs in the HD.
Yes, you need to erase the whole disk, not just the free space...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.
after highlighting the drive, click on the Partition tab, Options button will be down below...
