Forte and Memory
I use
java -Xmx128m -Xms64m my.Application
to start my.Application with more than standard memory assigned. When I try the same in Forte, it doesn't work (Build -> SetArguments).
But I remember, that it once worked, when I had an older Version of Forte... any ideas ?
Flow
to run Forte properly u need at least 256MB of RAM, but if u want to use all the options u need 512MB of RAM. with 64 or 128 MB u can get some trouble when debugging or other things

Re: Forte and OrbixWeb call-back
We have created a business process manager (BPM) layer between our client GUI
and business model objects that supports Java call-in/call-out. This enables
switching out the Forte windows with Java windows for a web solution with
minimal code re-write.
We were able to get most functionality to work as per our design, which
included registering a call back function from a Java GUI in the BPM, but had
to make some sacrifices due to a Forte bug, at least under 3.0.D. We turned
in case #38434, detailing errors when we tried to fire a callback method with
parameters, example below ("callback" was the Java object passed in.)
method TestIIOPBackend.FireCallback(input message: Framework.string)
begin
if callback != nil then
task.part.logmgr.putline('Firing callback');
//WORKS
callback.CallMe();
//ERROR!
callback.CallMeString(message);
else
task.part.logmgr.putline('Callback not set');
end if;
end method;
This may have been fixed in 3.0.F, we found a way to work around it in our
design and haven't investigated since.

1) Do you have experience with PowerBuilder and Forte' applications running at
the same time on the same (laptop) computer? Here I'm thinking
about any potential resource constraints? Memory Requirements? As log as you are using Win95 or NT you should not be concerned about WIN-resources. Memory depends more on what your 2 tier PB application requires than what your Forté would require.

RE: (forte-users) memory management
Brenda,
When a partition starts, it reserves the MinimumAllocation. Within this
memory space, objects are created and more and more of this memory is
actually used. When objects are no longer referenced, they remain in memory
and the space they occupy remains unusable.
When the amount of free memory drops below a certain point, the garbage
collector kicks in, which will free the space occopied by all objects that
are no longer referenced.
If garbage collecting can't free enough memory to hold the additional data
loaded into memory, then the partition will request another block of memory,
equal to the IncrementAllocation size. The partition will try to stay within
this new boundary by garbage collecting everytime the available part of this
memory drops below a certain point. If the partition can't free enough
memory, it will again request another block of memory.
This process repeats itself until the partition reaches MaximumAllocation.
If that amount of memory still isn't enough, then the partition crashes.
Instrument ActivePages shows the memory reserved by the partition.
AllocatedPages shows the part of that memory actually used.
AvailablePages shows the part ot that memory which is free.
Note that once memory is requested from the operating system, it's never
released again. Within this memory owned by the partition, the part actually
used will always be smaller. But this part will increase steadily, until the
garbage collecter is started and a part of it is freed again.
There are some settings that determine when the garbage collector is
started, but I'm not sure which ones they are.
The garbage collector can be started from TOOL using
"task.Part.OperatingSystem.RecoverMemory()", but I'm not sure if that will
always actually start the garbage collector.
If you track AllocatedPages of a partition, it's always growing, even if the
partition isn't doing anything. I don't know why.
If you add AllocatedPages and AvailablePages, you shoud get the value of
ActivePages, but you won't. You always get a lower number and sometimes even
considerably lower. I don't know why.

shared libraries (DLL's) which are a number of megabytes in size. The
space is taken by the application binary, plus the loaded DLL's, plus
whatever the current size of garbage collected memory is.
Forte allocates a garbage-collected heap that must be bigger than the size
of the allocated objects. So if you start with an 8MB heap, you will always
have at least 8MB allocated, no matter what objects you actually
instantiate. See "Memory Issues" in the Forte System Management Guide.

We seem to see a lot of the memory is taken by the Forte client apps (seen

executable of approx 4Mb takes up to
15Mb of memory. When I look at the objects retained in memory after
garbage collection, these are about
2Mb. Where do the other Mb's come from? -
Re: (forte-users) Forte and CORBA question
Hi,
The discarding the Java variable that references a distributed Forte object
doesn't cause that the distributed object will be reclaimed. In Forte client
you can use ReleaseDistReference() of the current partition (task.part) to
free the remote object. For Java client, you can implement the following
solution:
- define a method ReleaseMyObject() in the SO you are using to get the proxy
to the dist. object. As parameter for it use something that can identify
your object (attribute).
- your SO has an array or hashtable with your distributed objects, every new
object is added to it.
- in the implementation of ReleaseMyObject() find the object to release in
the array and call ReleaseDistReference() for it,
- from the Java client, call the ReleaseMyObject() for the object that is
not more needed.

Hello Dave,
do you use a copy return or copy parameters in this method ?
If not, then maybe Forte is unable to garbage-collect this object because
it is forever
a proxy which only the server-partition may be able to drop it from memory
(object=NIL).
Try this and let us know what happens.
Hope this helps

Subject: Forte and Powerbuilder Experience Needed
1) Do you have experience with PowerBuilder and Forte' applications running at
the same time on the same (laptop) computer? Here I'm thinking
about any potential resource constraints? Memory Requirements?
2) Can PowerBuilder and Forte' applications call and interact with one
another?
The Forte' application will need to interact with the PowerBuilder application
to pull out information maintained by the PB application. -
Hi!
I would like to know if there is any way of getting system CPU and memory usage using Java code.I want to get the system CPU and memory usage using the performance monitor dll, the perfctrs.dll, but access this data using Java language. Then you should create wrapper dll between your java code and perfctrs.dll and convert data from format of dll to format of your java code.
So, that is next question - how to create wrapper dll, how to deal with or how perfctrs.dll works? -
So our customer has asked us to compare compare Amazon Workspace and Azure RemoteApp offerings for them to choose from. While looking at Amazon Workspace, it clealy defines bundles with specific CPU cores, memory and user storage. However, Azure RemoteApp
only specifies user storage and vaguely compares its basic vs. standard plans in terms of "task worker" vs. "information worker"
I tried looking up its documentation but couldn't find specific CPU cores that are dedicated per user in basic vs. standard plans. I have following questions:
Can anyone point me in the right direction or help understand how many CPU cores and memory are dedicated (or shared) per user in each plan?
Our customer would most likely need a "custom" image for their custom apps. Is it possible for us to choose specific CPU cores and memory for the users to be able to run their apps in azure remoteapp?
In case i am misunderstanding the basic difference between AWS workspace and Azure RemoteApp, i'd appreciate some help in understanding it as well.
Thanks!Hi,
With Azure RemoteApp users see just the applications themselves, and the applications appear to be running on their local machine similar to other programs. With Workspaces users connect to a full desktop and launch applications within that.
1. Azure RemoteApp currently uses size A3 Virtual Machines, which have 4 vCPUs and 7GB RAM. Under Basic each VM can have a maximum of 16 users using it whereas under Standard each VM is limited to 10 users. The amount of CPU available
to a user depends on what the current demands are on the CPU at that moment from other users and system processes that may be on the server.
For example, say a user is logged on to a VM with 3 other users and the other users are idle (not consuming any CPU). At that moment the user could use all 4 vCPUs if a program they are running needed to. If a few moments later
the other 3 users all needed lots of CPU as well, then the first user would only have approximately 1 vCPU for their use. The process is dynamic and seeks to give each user their fair share of available CPU when there are multiple users demanding CPU.
Under the Standard plan a user will receive approximately a minimum of .4 vCPU assuming that the VM has the maximum number of users logged on and that all users are using as much CPU as possible at a given moment. Under the Basic plan the approximate
minimum would be .25 vCPU.
2. You cannot choose the specific number of cores and memory. What you can do is choose the Azure RemoteApp billing plan, which affects the user density of each VM as described above. If you need a lower density than Standard you
may contact support.

What is FF doing when it sets at idle with nothing streaming , playing or such and uses 40-70% of CPU and memory usage keeps on going up. I just set there and watch in the task manager. Every other program uses nothing,
There has to be a programmer intelligent enough to fix this. this has been going on for years.SImple fact is there is all "fixes" and answers are bogus. Just try using the same tabs in any other browser.
Right now Opera is 2-3% idle no memory problems. other browsers are similiar and I will post.
Mozzila is just like Microsoft . They have no desire to fix the problem -
Can I upgrade the chip and memory? if so what can I use. The system is a little too slow. Yes I have all the software to speed it up. Thanks

Go through Page 16-17. Each different processor is soldered to the board, so you've to replace the whole motherboard for that, you can see that their part numbers are different according to three different boards.
I suggest RAM upgrade from 4 to 8GB by adding another 4GB in the other vacant slot, with configuration DDR3 1333MHz dual channel boost.

HDD and memory upgrade on Satellite A350
Hi All
I have a satellite a350 laptop can anyone tell me whats the biggest harddrive I can have and memory please
ThanksHi
The RAM upgrade depends on the available chipset.
Not quite sure about your A350-xxx model but many of the Sat A350 notebooks were quipped with an Intel GM45 Express chipset and in such case you could upgrade the memory max up to 8GB RAM
Regarding the HDD: This notebook supports SATA HDD. This mean that you are not limited to an special size.
Theoretically it could be possible to use 500GB, 750GB 2.5 SATA HDDs -
MSI 785GM-E51 and memory modules problems
Could anyone help me with one problem. I have motherboard MSI 785GM-E51 and 4 memory modules GOODRAM GR 1333D364L9/2G. But when I'm inserting ALL modules my system not starting (even POST procedure). So working variants - when I'm inserting:
- one module in first (boot) slot
or
- they inserted in first and third memory slots
Any ideas? It is not motherboard problem, but processor itself - I have AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3,4 Ghz Core Revision C2 and this revision (according to the article: http://www.fcenter.ru/online.shtml?articles/hardware/processors/27650#02) has problems with support memory modules DDR3-1333 Mhz more than 2 modules. Conclusion - either adjust BIOS settings concerning memory timings and memory controller voltage or replace this kind of processor with the same type but with core revision C3

Re: Forte and Dialup PPP connections
Subject: Forte and Dialup PPP connections
Priority: normal
Reply-to: "Dexel Durban" <[email protected]>
We want to run Win 95 on our client forte machines. Currently we're
using Forte v2.0E and MS TCP/IP.
Everything works fine in the LAN enviroment, however these client
machines have to run at remote sites, and therefore will need to use
modems with dialup PPP links.
The catch with the dialup procedure is that they will dial into a box
which verifies their username/password and then dials them back (for
security reasons) and sets up the PPP conection.
The only software that seems capable of setting up a PPP connection
after someone dialing your machines, is a product called Fastlink which
we're using.
After we've set up the PPP connection and run forte it works 100%,
however if we come out and run forte again - it can't establish the
connection to the host.
What we've deduced from this is that possibly :
1) MS TCP/IP isn't cleaning up after itself after the first
connection
2) The problem lies with Fastlinks ODI driver.
My questions are :
1) Has anyone managed to get forte running over a modem using PPP,
with the call-back verification procedure outlined above ?
2) In the Forte doc's it says that Forte is only compatible with Win
95 and MS TP/IP no other TCP/IP stack - is this true, or has someone
managed to get another stack working ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated !

I have some similiar problems that basically were solved by a fix to one of the
ip executables. For this particular situations I was using Lan Workplace for DOS
Version 5 and just visited their web site and looked for a description similiar
to the problem I was having to determine the right patch. It sounds like when
you let go of your connection that the com port is probably still being held and
not beig released. I could be wrong but.... are you getting any other type of message?Thank you for your answer, David.
We are considering the splitting of one VMS partition into several ones to
streamline some functionality. Currently the communication between the
implied components is handled within the existing partition. By splitting it
we are expecting some performance loss due to interpartition communication
overhead and, since the number of messages expected will be high, we were
wondering if they will be needlessly going through the whole network stack
or transferred directly via socket IPC, as can be done in the Unix boxes.
The answer would help us tune-up the system by focusing at the right
parameters during testing of the new setup.

How to display CPU and memory utilization from ST06 in a report
Hi,
I want to display CPU Utilization and Memory utilization and File sys details from ST06 transaction in a report.
Is there any function module or any other method to do that.
Please advice.
Thanks,
Sandeep.Hi Ranganath,
Thanks for your time.
And thank you very much for the reply.
Both the function modules are helpful.
But can u also help me in getting the data of FileSys from ST06.

Profile Performance and memory
Hi, guys
I am trying to analysis my Profile Data for the Profile Performance and memory.
When I check the data for VI Time, I found there are same VIs with different VI Time, what is that mean
The reason why I am doing this is because I am going to add pulse model for my VI, so I need to know the relationship between my all instruments and time, Am I in the right track
Thanks
Solved!

VI Time.png 72 KBIt looks like the timing had a resolution of 15.6 ms, which I think is common on some flavors of the Windows OS. Note that the average times on some of those VIs is zero. This suggessts that for many of the 1878 runs the time was probably recorded as zero and a few were at 15.6 ms.
This is one of the limitations of the Profiler.
