Forwarding events from my menubar class to main class

I'm brand new to swing. I'm trying write an app, and wanted to encapsulate my JToolBar and JMenuBar items, so I made classes to handle each of them. Then from my "main" class I could just call a function and voila.
However the one obvious problem is that my "main" class doesn't know when JToolBar or JMenuBar items have actions. Those classes each handle their own event listening. I was hoping (probably through magic) that I could then forward that action to the main class somehow.
The obvious solution would be to expose the individual toolbar JButtons and JMenuItems and call addActionListener(this) on those items from the "main" class. However I'm hoping to avoid having to expose those items, probably just because I'm anal.
One idea that I've seen but seems kind of not-very-elegant was to create an item to track the state of all things, and pass that item around. Then in my individual actionPerformed() functions I could manipulate that item so that the main class could see those changes.
I imagine I'll have this same issue when I get into more complicated parts of my would-be application than just the menubar. Any help would be appreciated.

OK so I can define the new actions in my main class and then in my toolbar/menubar items I just tell them to use those main class Actions? Hopefully I have as somewhat firm a grasp on this as I think I have. I'll try that out now.

  • How to pass events from subpanel(s) to the main VI ?

    hi all,
    I found a lot of solutions to pass the events from the main VI to the subpanel(s) but none about passing the events from subpanel(s) to the main VI. In the attached VIs, I just want to generate an event in the main_VI.vi when I click on the button positionned in the subPanel1.vi. How can I do that ?
    thanks.

    Cedric,
    You could use a queue to transfer the button data to your main vi.
    See the attached files:
    subPanel1mod - Detects a button change and Enqueues the state.
    main_VI mod - uses the Timeout event to poll for data in the queue.
    main_VI mod1 - gets the queue data without having to poll.
    Like your orginals, these files are in LV2010.

  • In iPhoto, can I file individual events from one year into one main event withouthout m muddling them up?ing them up

    In iPhoto, can I file individual events from one year into one main event without muddling them up?

    Perhaps I misunderstood you. You want to have a hierarchy
    Folder: 2000
    ->Contains Event for January, February, etc
    Folder 2001
    -> Contains Event for January, February etc
    That sort of thing? Well with Events, no you can't. Yes you can do that with Albums, but not Events.
    That said, it's a pretty limited way of organising your photos - in fact you might as well just use folders in the Finder. You can find the photos from any year, month, day with the Calendar tool. Simply click on the Search icon on the bottom, then on the the wee drop down and select the calendar tool.
    Want the photos from a particular range - say, June 11 1999 to September 30 2001? Then a Smart Album will do that.
    But the problem is that it's often hard to remember the year/month something happened. Did we go to Disney in 1997 or 98? There are other more useful ways that make your snaps more searchable.
    Here's a canned answer that I offer that suggests some of the richer organising possibilities of iPhoto. It might spark something.
    I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
    Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
    Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
    So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
    Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
    Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
    add Rating is greater than 4 stars
    The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
    In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • How can I assign image file name from Main() class

    I am trying to create library class which will be accessed and used by different applications (with different image files to be assigned). So, what image file to call should be determined by and in the Main class.
    Here is the Main class
    import org.me.lib.MyJNIWindowClass;
    public class Main {
    public Main() {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    MyJNIWindowClass mw = new MyJNIWindowClass();
    mw.s = "clock.gif";
    And here is the library class
    package org.me.lib;
    public class MyJNIWindowClass {
    public String s;
    ImageIcon image = new ImageIcon("C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/Desktop/" + s);
    public MyJNIWindowClass() {
    JLabel jl = new JLabel(image);
    JFrame jf = new JFrame();
    jf.add(jl);
    jf.setVisible(true);
    jf.pack();
    I do understand that when I am making reference from main() method to MyJNIWindowClass() s first initialized to null and that is why clock could not be seen but how can I assign image file name from Main() class for library class without creating reference to Main() from MyJNIWindowClass()? As I said, I want this library class being accessed from different applications (means different Main() classes).
    Thank you.

    Your problem is one of timing. Consider this simple example.
    public class Example {
        public String s;
        private String message = "Hello, " + s;
        public String toString() {
            return message;
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            Example ex = new Example();
            ex.s = "world";
            System.out.println(ex.toString());
    }When this code is executed, the following happens in order:
    1. new Example() is executed, causing an object to constructed. In particular:
    2. field s is given value null (since no value is explicitly assigned.
    3. field message is given value "Hello, null"
    4. Back in method main, field s is now given value "world", but that
    doesn't change message.
    5. Finally, "Hello, null" is output.
    The following fixes the above example:
    public class Example {
        private String message;
        public Example(String name) {
            message = "Hello, " + name;
        public String toString() {
            return message;
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            Example ex = new Example("world");
            System.out.println(ex.toString());
    }

  • Error checking for persistence unit annotations in the main class

    Hi
    When I tried running the examples from the SUN JMS tutorials, I landed in a problem. I did the following changes...
    1. I created a new project in eclipse

    I'm having the same problem, albeit 18 months later. I am working with a tutorial from apress, which seems very high on Glassfish as a AppServer environment for learning EJB 3.0. I have the same error when I try to run the client application in the Sun Platform 9.0 Application Server's AppClient Module container , "... Error checking for persistence unit annotations in the main class..." and I think it has something to do with the fact that the AppClient is expecting "something" in the MANIFEST.MF file that actually isn't there... ( sigh ). " so close, and yet so far away.... "

  • The manifest file "could not find the main class."

    The main class file is inside a folder in the created Jar file, but is not in a package. But when I double-click the Jar file, it says it could not find the main class. I am using Windows. I have tried each of the following lines in the manifest, but none are working:
    Main-Class: Installer
    Main-Class: setupFiles/programFile/Installer
    Main-Class: setupFiles\programFile\Installer
    Main-Class: setupFiles.programFile.InstallerThe main class is inside the setupFiles/programFile directory. Please Help!
    Thanks in advance,
    ~ Tom

    Hi Tom,
    The main class file is inside a folder in the created
    Jar file, but is not in a package. This is the problem. A JAR file is not an arbitrary ZIP file, where you can arrange directories as you like. The structure of a JAR file always has to follow the package structure. So your Installer class must be on the top level and not in directory setupFiles/programFile.
    You might add non-class files in other directores and can access them as resources, but you have to put the class files into their "natural" directories.

  • JAR: - Could not find main class

    I'm sorry, I know this issue has been posted before but I am a bit confused with my situation.
    After making a jar on my computer, I run it, and the program loads and runs perfectly.
    However, when I try the jar on someone else's computer, it doesn't work, and gives the "could not find main class" message. The other computer has JRE but not JDK, so I don't know if that makes a difference.
    Anyways, my main class file is located in a package called hw2, and the whole project is located in a folder called HW2. So my class file is located in something like C:\School\HW2\hw2\Main.class.
    My Manifest.txt file is located in the \School\HW2 directory and has the following with a new line at the end:
    Main-Class: hw2.Main
    At the command prompt, I go to my C:\School\HW2 directory and I type the following to create the jar:
    jar cvmf Manifest.txt test.jar hw2\*.class
    My jar file has the following contents:
    META-INF/
    META-INF/MANIFEST.MF
    hw2/Bank.class
    hw2/GUIInterface.class
    hw2/Main.class
    Did I write the manifest.txt file correctly? Am I in the right directory when creating the jar file? Am I executing the jar command wrong? How come it works on my computer but not on someone else's?

    Are you certain you're executing the jar in the same way on both machines?
    For example, are you sure you're not executing the unjarred class files when you run on your local machine?

  • Need help with custom event from Main class to an unrelated class.

    Hey guys,
    I'm new to Flash and not great with OOP.  I've made it pretty far with google and lurking, but I've been pulling my hair out on this problem for a day and everything I try throws an error or simply doesn't hit the listener.
    I'm trying to get my Main class to send a custom event to an unrelated class called BigIcon.  The rest of the code works fine, it's just the addEventListener and dispatchEvent that isn't working.
    I've put in the relevant code in below.  Let me know if anything else is needed to troubleshoot.  Thank you!

    Alright, this compiles, gives me no errors, shows my 'book' and 'flowers' icons perfectly when ran, and prints 'addEventListener' to the output window as expected.  I get no errors when I press the button, 'dispatchEvent' is output (good), but the 'twitchUp' function is never called and 'EventTriggered' is never output.

             int c = 0;
             b = d+c;
             System.out.println(b);
    }First of all do not name a method the same as a class. Second most of this class appears to be based mainly in the realm of wishful thinking. In programming, wishing that something will "just work" without understanding the basics of why and how it works does, pretty much 100% of the time, not end well.
    You need to take a number of steps back from this code, get grounded in some fundamentals and then make another attempt. I would highly recommend putting the Swing (or any other GUI) code aside for some time now. Inter-object communication is a fundamental part of OO and thus a fundamental part of Java and this code clearly shows that you don't understand it yet at all.
    Start here [_Learning The Java Language_|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/index.html]
    If you have questions as you go through the tutorial do come back and ask them and someone here will be glad to help you. But in order to help you with code you have to be at a point where you understand things like variable scope, the difference between a class and an Object and how, why and what methods can be used to exchange information between two instances.

  • How to Invoke a main class in a jar file from my project

    Hi
    I am a new user of the Sun Java Studio enterprise. I would like to know how i can invoke a main method in a jar file associated to the project.
    regards
    Nisanth

    Could you please clarify: do you want to run your project or a project from an independent jar?
    In the first case just select Run Project from the project context menu or select a class with main method and click Run File in the class context menu.
    Regarding the second case:
    - I don't think there is such a feature in the IDE (running third party jars is not an IDE function). Could you explain why you need this?

  • Using main class's methods from a different class in the same file

    Hi guys. Migrating from C++, hit a few snags. Hope someone can furnish a quick word of advice here.
    1. The filename is test.java, so test is the main class. This code and the topic title speak for themselves:
    class SomeClass
         public void SomeMethod()
              System.out.println(test.SomeOperation());
    public class test
         public static void main(String args[])
              SomeClass someObject = new SomeClass();
              someObject.SomeMethod();
         public static String SomeOperation()
              return "SomeThing";
    }The code works fine. What I want to know is, is there some way to use test.SomeOperation() from SomeClass without the test.?
    2. No sense opening a second topic for this, so second question: Similarly, is there a good way to refer to System.out.println without the System.out.? Like the using keyword in C++.
    Thanks.

SomeOperation is a static method of the test class, and it's best to call it that way so you know exactly what your code is doing here.

Like the using keyword in C++.Again, you could use static imports, but again, I don't recommend it. Myself, I use Eclipse and set up its template so that when I type sop it automatically spits out System.out.println(). Most decent IDE's have this capability.
    Also, you may wish to look up Java naming conventions, since if you abide by them, it will make it easier for others to understand your code.
    Much luck and welcome to this forum!

  • Calling Portal event from ABAP class

    Hi Experts,
    I need a following clarificatrion, Please help,
    1. Is it possible to call a webdynpro method from a normal ABAP class?
    2. If no, we need a functionality of a class 'CL_WDR_HTTP_EXT_MIME_HANDLER' having method 'DO_DOMAIN_RELAX_HTML'.
    Is there any alternative method which can be used in ABAP having the same functionality.
    3. Is there any ways with which we can call portal event from ABAP class?
    Thanks,
    Shabir

    >1. Is it possible to call a webdynpro method from a normal ABAP class?
    I wouldn't necessarily recommend this approach. You shouldn't try to trigger events or any of the standard WDDO* methods from outside the WD Component itself.  That said, you can pass the object reference (like the WD_COMP_CONTROLLER object reference or the View Object Reference) into methods of normal classes.  Be careful if you are finding yourself calling a lot of your added methods from outside WD.  This is probably a sign that these methods should be in the Assistance Class or some other Class functioning as a Model Object.
    >2. If no, we need a functionality of a class 'CL_WDR_HTTP_EXT_MIME_HANDLER' having method 'DO_DOMAIN_RELAX_HTML'.
    Is there any alternative method which can be used in ABAP having the same functionality.
    What exactly do you want to do here?  Do you just want to get the relaxation script?  For what purpose?  You should never need to inject the relaxation script into WDA.
    >3. Is there any ways with which we can call portal event from ABAP class?
    To what purpose.  Do you just want to delegate the triggering of the event that is inside WD Component to be called from a class?  If so you can pass the portal API object reference into a class from the WD Component.  However this only works while running within WD.
    How is this class used?  Are you running in WD?  Are you trying to generate some HTML code that runs in the portal independent of WD?
