Found a great solution to my Linux to Tiger network printing woes

As a novice, I've been in network printing h*!# the past 2 days trying to connect a Ubuntu (linux) box to my Mac and it's usb printer. I couldn't find a simple configuration solution in "Linuxland" or Mac forums until I found this link...

Thank you Ronald Florence.
I hope this helps others. Good Luck.

These settings are for setting up your wireless printer to stay connected to your router, keep wireless devices better connected and make your router secure and hack proof.
1. Set a static IP in the printer (click here) outside the DHCP range of the router (check your manual).
This is for Linksys routers but can be used for all routers.  Verify your DHCP range and change this
first if needed.  More Wireless Printing help is here.
2. Verify in the printer that 'Auto Off' is disabled.  Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by going to the
printers IP address in your browsers address bar, click  Settings Tab/Auto Off.  Or use the Printer
    Assistant, Printer Home Page (EWS).
In the router:  (Refer to your router manual for information)
3. Use a fixed wireless channel like 1,6 or 11, never 'auto', try channel 1 first then the rest.
4. Set router to 20Mhz only, or 145Mbps depending on router.
5. Always use WPA2-AES (Personal) encryption, but you can try ‘mixed’ mode.
6. Disable WPS and never use it and disable UPnP for the routers security.  Nobody can hack your
system now and helps with wireless connectivity (if you want to know why, search the web).
7. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands), make sure the SSID’s are NOT the same,
they must be different for all bands, even for any Guest networks.
8. Save all settings.  Power off both, wait 2 mins.  Power on router wait 2 mins.
9. Power on printer and verify it reconnects to router.

  • I've just found a possible solution to insert equations, without latex and images.

I've just found a possible solution to insert equations, fractions and other types of mathematics characters in Pages for iOS, without latex, etc, only I've used Pages for iOS. Without inserting images, only with Pages and tools and symbols that are not images! Take a look at this document from Pages made with the iPad Air.

Yes, use the camera icon to upload a graphic of your document.  Also explain your solution right here instead of asking people to send you their email address, which is often not a good idea.

A Gigaware 9pin to 4pin fw cable solved my issue. The Rocketfish fw cable was crap. And that thing cost me $24.99 from Best Buy. Getting my money back for sure.

  • Linode with latest Arch Linux never brings networking online at boot?

Hello, I use Linode for my primary VPS related stuff. On it, I usually use Arch Linux. Recently however, I've faced a pretty big issue. If I spin up a new linode, do a pacman -Syu and then reboot it, it will not setup networking when it starts up.
I have to manually login with their Lish out-of-band access to login and start networking manually (ie, by doing dhcpcd eth0). I've filed a support ticket with them, but they said it was basically out of their control and pointed me here. I've never had this issue until recently.
I've already tried setting up netctl and such for defaults, but it still ends up with no DHCP lease upon boot, and I'm not sure why. Anyone know of this issue and/or how to fix it?

I had this same issue. I fixed it by (via Lish) systemctl enabling and starting dhcpcd.service, and (if that didn't fix ssh) restarting sshd.service.
    I also found this interesting:
    [root@sandbox ~]# cat /usr/lib/systemd/network/10-dhcp.network
    [Match]
    Name=eth0
    [Network]
    DHCP=yes
Is networkd supposed to be handling network configuration, and if so, shouldn't that be "ef*" rather than eth0?
Is there a better solution that should be put in place to fix this? How does Arch normally do DHCP on Ethernet right now?

  • DeskJet 970CXi - Windows 7 - Network Printer - Drivers solution

Hi all, i was looking for a solution to install my Deskjet 970CXi as a network printer, using Windows 7.
I didn't find anything directly concerned the network installation but only for local printer through USB port.
Many people are bored and tired about this issue.
So i decided to try by myself and using an idea taken from another thread ..... now it works really fine and it is recognized by the system as Deskjet 970CXi !!!
    Here's the solution I've found
    First part written by panther3001
    1)  in Windows 7, click the start menu
    2)  in the search field type "run"
    3) click on "Run"
    4)  type "hdwwiz" and go to "OK" - note, you can type "hdwwiz" directly on search box, or add the command "run" in the start menu ( http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-happened-to-the-Run-command  )
    5)  click "next," then click "install the hardware that I manually select from a list." click "next."
    6)  click "printers" and "next"
    7) select "use an existing port" and go to "USB001." click "next" (you don't have USB cause the printer is on the network) .. choose LPT1 instead
    8) click "windows update".  This causes Windows Update to look for ALL printers that exist for Windows 7, and lo and behold, The driver for the 970cxi now shows up!!!
    9)  select this driver and continue on.
    second part discovered by myself
    10) install the printer as local printer and then try to print the test page, you'll get error, don't worry and delete the print process.
    11) close the window displaying the printers and other devices
    11) click the  start menu
    12) choose Devices & Printers
    13) click on add printer
    14) choose Network, wireless or Bluetooth
    15) now Windows shows you 2 printers (one on the net and the other on your PC)
    16) choose the printer connected through the printer server
    17) from the drop list choose HP Deskjet 970CXi
    18) DONE !!!
Following this procedure i performed the network installation of 3 Deskjet 970CXi, one is mine, the second one is my brother's printer (at his home) and the last one is in my office.
Please let me know if this works for  you also.

  • Printing from Linux to Windows shared printer

I am trying to print from Linux to a shared printer on a Windows XP PC. I installed cups and foomatic, started cupsd and configured the printer (HP Deskjet 720C) in KDE control centre. When I try to print a test page I get the following message:

Rather than use SMB to connect from Lion to the Windows XP printer share, a better method is to enable Print Services for UNIX on Windows XP and then use LPD on the Mac to print via the Windows share.
To install Print Services for UNIX on Windows XP:
Log on to the Windows server with an administrative-level account.
Start the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
    Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
Click Other Network File and Print Services, and then click Details.
Click to select the Print Services for UNIX check box, and then click OK.
Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the installation
If you haven't done so already, share the printer on Windows XP and make the name one word - no spaces or special characters
With the print services enabled you can then create the printer queue on Lion.
Open Print & Scan and click + to add a printer
Select the IP icon and set the protocol to Line Printer Daemon - LPD
For the Address, enter the IP address of the Windows XP computer
For the Queue name, enter the share name set for the printer in Windows XP
Name and Location are free text so you can set this to something meaningful
For the Print Using menu, select the supporting printer driver. Note that like connections via SMB, the vendors driver for Lion in some cases cannot be used and an alternate like those offered by the Gutenprint suite must be used.
Click the OK button to complete the queue creation.
Now you are ready to test the new print queue.

  • Sometimes my computer takes too long to connect to new website. I am running a pretty powerful work program at same time, what is the best solution? Upgrading speed from cable network, is it a hard drive issue? do I need to "clean out" the computer?

Many times my computer takes too long to connect to new website. I have wireless internet (time capsule) and I am running a pretty powerful real time financial work program at same time, what is the best solution? Upgrading speed from cable network? is it a hard drive issue? do I only need to "clean out" the computer? Or all of the above...not to computer saavy.  It is a Macbook Pro  osx 10.6.8 (late 2010).

Almost certainly none of the above!  Try each of the following in this order:
Select 'Reset Safari' from the Safari menu.
Close down Safari;  move <home>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db to the trash; restart Safari.
Change the DNS servers in your network settings to use the OpenDNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Turn off DNS pre-fetching by entering the following command in Terminal and restarting Safari:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false

  • Firewall "on" no network printer, firewall "off" network printer works great.

When I turn my firewall on my network printer (via ethernet AEBS) is no longer available.
    Printer sharing is turned on.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

If the Airport Admin Utility cannot automatically "see" your Base Station, you have a big clue as to the cause of your problems. On a private LAN, it should never be necessary to select "Other" and manually type in the Base Station's IP address.
The most likely cause for the Airport Admin Utility not being able to automatically "see" an Airport Base Station - is a firewall on the Mac that is blocking it. Any of the following are possible:
    - you have installed non-Apple firewall software on the Mac
    - you have installed so-called "internet protection" software on the Mac
    - you have installed "internet monitoring" software on the Mac (like "Little Snitch")
    - you have installed VPN client software on the Mac - and many of these applications install their own firewall
All this stuff needs to go, since it will cause all sorts of trouble with communication between a Base Station or Airport Express, and a Mac.
I'd also be very worried about what this "Cocktail" utility is really doing to your system.

  • Applescript works great in leopard, error -10814 in tiger

im running macs in a active directory domain. we have homefolders for users and they will not auto mount for a specific user group. i have an applescript that will take care of this, but when i run the script in tiger i get error type -10814. i can find that error anywhere. below is the script, like i said, works great in leopard but errors in tiger. both systems are bound to the domain with the same settings. i can manually mount the home folder on either version but want to automate this for users who have no clue what to do.
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    end tell
    property targetURL : "smb://student-dfs-01/homefolders"
    open location targetURL

I don't know specifically, but I'd look at using the mount volume command rather than 'open location' for a SMB URL:
    mount volume "smb://student-dfs-01/homefolders"

I have tried my own IMAC password but to no avail. The printer also shows a pop-up box stating 'awaiting authentication.
    Any help appreciated

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

  • After installation of Mavericks, I get the warning : Apple Qmaster File Agent not found.  Any solutions?

    Hello,
Everything was great running Mavericks in FCPX and seemingly Compressor... up until I hit the 'submit' button on a project.  I found the following thread, which is related, but it doesn't mention Mavericks so I started a new one here.  I'm guessing my problem has to do with Mavericks because I was able to export videos fine yesterday before the upgrade.   I followed Russ' potential solution in that thread to no avail.  The same problem happens whether I try to use the systems cluster or not.  Here's the thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23434754#23434754
After trying all of that, I decided to use FCS Remover to remove FCPX, Compressor and QMaster (like I've had to do in the past when something would stop working after an update).  I then re-installed everything and opened my Compressor project back up for export.  I was expecting it to go through at that point, but alas, the same dreaded warning message appears:  "An internal error occurred: Apple Qmaster File Agent not found."
I'm stumped.  Don't know what to do besides uninstalling all my pro apps, including QMaster, and reinstalling.
    Any ideas?

I set QMaster Preferences for Compressor Services to "Share" = checked and "Managed" = Checked, then I set Instances to 4, it did not work, back to the original error "Qmaster file Agent not found".
Look at some of your information I noticed that in Qmaster Preference the "Advanced" - Network - Use Network Interface: "All Interfaces". So I changed that to "Built-in Ethernet 2" (NIC my cable is plugged into) and set "Enable Port Range: From 50,000 with number of ports 1000".
So, for the heck of it I tried setting Instances to 2 -- and it worked, look in Batch Monitor I see 5 segments, 1 audio and 4 video with 2 out of 4 video transcoding (each was assigned about a 2 min chunk of video). Progress -- ok, so now I set Instances to 3 and submit batch -- it's still working, I get 7 segments 6 video and 1 audio. Ok the big test, setting Instances to 4 and it still works!! 9 segments, 8 video and 1 audio, WoooHoo, its working!
Just to be sure I open up Activity monitor and all 4 of my CPUs were cranking at 95% utilization.
Also checked OS X firewall setting, they are set to most minimal. Checked my router also, 192.168.1.2 is the IP assigned to my MacPro and the router is set to DMZ that specific IP (meaning is basically open to any port).
But I think the KEY in my case was to change the "Use Network Interface" from "All Interfaces" to "Built-in Ethernet 2" and then Enable Port Range from 50,000.
On a side note, the progress bars in Batch Monitor and in Compressor are way off with the "Remaining" time estimates -- overall progress will suddenly jump -- it looks as if the remaining time isn't being divided by the number segments currently running or something?
    Thank you for your assistance.
    Rob.

  • URL not found error while loading photo on Linux

    Hi,
I have a AIR 2.0 appliaction which works perfectly well on Windows but while I run it on Linux Loader object can't load any photo. I tried many path variations but I always get Error #2035: URL Not Found.
Here's how I load a photo (with hard coded URL)
    _imageLoader.load(new URLRequest("/home/piotr/105755/damage_photos/17.jpg"));
I'm sure that "/home/piotr/105755/damage_photos/" path is correct. I pasted it to files explorer address text input and expected directory was opend. I'm also sure that 17.jpg file exists in that directory.
When I trace IOError message it says: Error #2035: URL Not Found. URL: app:/home/piotr/105755/damage_photos/17.jpg
    My questions are:
What "app:" does in my URL... can it cause the problem? If yes, how can I get rid of it?
Is there anything specific about UNIX systems and Loader that should I know about?
How can I load file from hard drive other way than by Loader object?
I use AIR 2.0 SKD, Flex 4.5 SKD and Ubuntu 10.04. Could anyone help me, please?

    Hi,
Just a test, can you try to do this:
    var f:File = new File(File.userDirectory.nativePath+File.separator+"105755"+File.separator+"damage_photos" +File.separator+"17.jpg");
    _imageLoader.load(new URLRequest(f.url));
