You posted your message into a FrameMaker user-to-user forum, not any kind of official Adobe area. Also, it isn't clear from your message whether you're asking if FrameMaker itself is 508 compliant, or if you can use it to produce 508 compliant documentation.
So you may want to go back to the Adobe site and find http://www.adobe.com/accessibility/ and call the 800 number on that page.

    Alright, I have a suggestion for improvement. We need a new forum section for complaints about the way Apple is treating us.
    To make sure I'm being clear, let me give you an example of just such a post that may be included in such a section.
    I ordered online the family packs of Leopard, iWork '08 and iLife '08 on November 6th. I received an email telling me my order had been shipped on November 7th.
    On November 9th I decided to check the progress of my shippment by logging on to FedEx. To my surprise, it had been delivered! Not to me but another party. I could download a PDF from FedEx and see the signature.
    After trying to deal with FedEx for a few days I was finally told to deal with Apple because they would have to initiate the investigation. Fine. These things happen.
    On 11/13/2007 I spoke with an Apple Customer Service Representative and received an Apple Issue Number and Case Number. I was told that it should be resolved in a few days. It wasn't.
    11/20/2007, Here's where it gets interesting. In talking with them again I explained that since my signature was not on the FedEx ticket it had not been delivered properly if at all. I explained that since FedEx was clearly at fault the package should be shipped again. Finally they agreed. I was told that my package would be shipped and to expect an email.
    11/23/2007, I was told again that nothing would be shipped until after an investigation had been completed. So did they lie? I spoke with a manager who kept repeating that he was sorry for the mis-communication. That became very frustrating to say the least. Remember, FedEx requires a signature. Without it or my permission to deliver somewhere else they must deliver to me and get my signature. The FedEx PDF clearly shows another persons signature.
    Equally frustrating is the fact that they will not keep me informed as to the status. I have to call them and wait on hold. I did get a couple of emails with text along the lines of, "We continue to work with our carrier on your lost package. "
    However, there is no way to reply to these form letters. The only way to stay in touch with Apple is to call and be put on hold.
    Twice, after giving them my order number and being put on hold "while they look up my records" or whatever, the call was disconnected. I'm not saying they did so on purpose but the results were the same. Another call, another round of giving my order number and explaining to yet again a new person the details of the situation.
    I've had many problems with Apple since becoming a customer in June of 2006 but I just can't let this go. I need a place to warn others. If you buy something, you might be better off buying it from a store instead of on-line. This kind of information is needed to warn others concerning the business practices of Apple should something go wrong. This is why we need a new section for putting forth such complaints.

    It seems to me that the real problem here is with FedEx, as I have encountered similar types of problems with them in the past. Even though a signature is required, I have had packages left on my porch. When I enquired, someone had actually signed (i.e.forged) my name! Other times it has been left on my porch with some other signature. When I call to complain, FedEx just seems to think there is no problem as long as I got my package. They seem totally unconcerned even though a signature is required and I definitely did not authorize delivery with no signature. I have expressed my concerns directly to Apple, but have no way of knowing if it has done any good. I think this problem is worse with FedEx ground, as that is contracted out. Around here anyway, i think the drivers will sign the ticket and leave the package just so they won't have to make another trip. It's not right, and it's not supposed to happen this way, but i know it does.
    Apple entrusted your package to FedEx in good faith that it would be delivered to you, and that your signature would be required for you to receive it. That should have resulted in you receiving it. however, due to a false signature, you did not. Clearly, FedEx is responsible.
    If the package was supposedly delivered to your address, but has a false signature, I wonder if the driver might have signed the delivery ticket or gotten someone else to sign it and just left it on your porch or something like that. If so, it could have been subsequently stolen. If something like this happened, it might explain why things are so bogged down in the investigation at Apple. From their viewpoint, the package was delivered and a signature was obtained and they are probably being stonewalled by FedEx.
    A user to user discussion forum such as Apple Discussions won't help with delivery problems. It's best to report them directly to Apple as you have done. If you continue to have problems, you can call Apple and ask to speak to Apple Customer Relations. They may well be able to cut through the red tape. You could also express your concern in the "Feedback to Apple" section. Maybe if enough people complain, they might consider awarding the shipping contract to someone else. Or perhaps the other shippers are even worse.
    One of my recent shipments was evidently lost in a typhoon. But when I called Apple, a replacement was sent out immediately. This is more what I would expect of Apple, and you have every right to expect similar treatment.
    If FedEx delivered to the wrong address and got a wrong signature, they should be expected to go back and retrieve the package. But if they delivered to your address and did not get your signature, then you would be well within your rights to go to your local Better Business Bureau and file a complaint against FedEx. That might possibly get some action of some sort. FedEx cannot ignore the BBB as easily as they can ignore you. If your signature was actually forged, you will certainly be able to prove that the signature on the delivery ticket is definitely not yours. And you could forward the BBB complaint to Apple. I don't know if this would help or just muddy the water, but it would put a little more pressure on FedEx I would think.
    In the meantime, I would certainly speak to Apple Customer Relations and see if they can help you out here. They want happy Apple customers, and I think they would like to know about the extreme frustrations you are experiencing through no fault of your own.
    I sympathize with your problems, and I hope that you are able to get them resolved soon.

  • Need Guidance on Section 508 Compliance (This is a "When" question - not a "How")

    Hi, I've been doing a lot of research on Section 508 compliance and I am totally clear on how it is handled in Captivate.  I am just not sure when it needs to be implemented.
    I have a software demo I am working on that is basically, self-running.  The user sits, watches, and listens.  There are a few times when there is some user interaction (They have to click on something to go to another section or something), and I totally get implementing the accessibility features for those elements.  What I don't get is, am I supposed to add accessibility to all of the other objects that appear on the stage during the self-running part of the demo?  For example, if a visually impaired person were listening to my demo (the entire demo is narrated) would they really want their screen reader reading off elements on the screen at the same time?
    Anyone who could shed some light on the types of accessibility features that should be enabled during narrated, self-running demos would be greatly appreciated! (Closed Captioning aside)

    Basically, the only need yo're addressing is for visually impaired users here, correct? Most visually disabled learners are going to turn off the audio on a presentation because it interferes with the screen reader.
    The simplest way to test if the demo is accessible is to listen to the narration or read it without the visual cues. If you find there are elements that are not expressed in the narration that are necessary to the demo, you may want to create an accessible text equivalent that describes what is happening on the screen in addition to the narration, insert it in the slide notes for your project and create directions that highlight this option for those learners.

    spry menus through Dreamweaver's accessibility report it just
    relays to us the fact that we are using Java script and we need to
    provide a "noscript" tag. Do you have any ideas on how we could

  • Cp 5.5, Section 508 Accessibility - Is it possible to create a skip tag in the Accessibility dialog?

    Hi,
    We're working with a US Federal client so our Captivates need to fully Section 508 compliant. We've been able to work out strategies for all the elements of our course except one:
    In order to auto-play each slide, then have it pause until the user chooses to move forward using the playbar, we've added a click box to each slide. We would like for JAWS to skip reading the click bos, since it is not used as anything other than an automatic pause. If we could use the Accessibility dialog to create a skip tag for the click boxes, that would be ideal.
    Here's our experience so far:
    If we leave the Accessibility dialog in default (Auto Label checked), JAWS read "click box" - acceptable but not ideal
    If we uncheck Auto Label and leave Name and Description empty, JAWS reads "unlabeled button" - unacceptable
    If we uncheck Auto Label and populate Name and Description with empty quotation marks, JAWS reads "quote quote" - unacceptable
    Appreciate any techniques you've come up with -

  • Section 508 Search ability

    I'm brand new to RoboHelp (v6), so forgive the elementary
    question. The "Search" function for Section 508 compliance appears
    to be limited, to put it nicely. The results appear to be similar
    to an Index, only much less helpful, returning words like "above"
    and pages upon pages of other unhelpful words we used in our topics
    like "system". I understand the need to create a Stop List for
    these terms for the Index. However, before getting in too deep with
    RoboHelp I was hoping someone could validate that entering terms in
    the Stop List for the Smart Index will remove the terms from being
    picked up in the Search function? For some reason the documentation
    doesn't make that clear and I'm unable to test it because of a
    separate issue posted to the forum. Also, because Section 508 is
    the requirement and a non-508 webhelp is not desired for any other
    reason than to implement a search using a text field (for non-508
    users, of course), is it less of a maintenance hassle in the long
    run to implement a third-party tool like ZoomSearch, or is a
    non-508 webhelp option better?

  • Adobe Section 508 compliance check question

    I've run the Adobe Section 508 compliance check on a document.  The only errors I receive now are 5 tables without designated table headers.  I click on the link to these tables, but nothing happens.  It doesn't point me to the tables with the errors.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm using Adobe Pro v9.2.0.

    I work at a college and have to create complex Section 508-compliant PDFs throughout the year. Though you've probably upgraded to CS6 or higher, I thought I'd share info on an ID plug-in that is very helpful with determining and setting the reading order from within ID. It is called "FrameMaker," by Rorohiko, and it puts a tiny label on each frame of a page. For example, if I select a frame, the reading order "number" will show on the top right of the frame. So I'll know immediately that I need to fix the order before creating a pdf.
    Very inexpensive. Definitely worth the money.

  • I need a section to display at the bottom of the first page of my report

    My report displays a number of records, but at the bottom of the first page of the report, I need a section (a remittance slip) that would only appear at the bottom of the first page.
    I've tried using a page footer with conditional suppression.  This is fine for the first page, but in subsequent pages, the footer space is reserved, so the records in my details section only go 2/3's of the page.  "Reserve minimum page footer" seems pretty useless.
    I've looked into using a details section that uses "Print at bottom of page".  But since my report contains groupings, this messes up my report structure and leaves a lot of extra space as well.
    I can't guarantee that a group footer section will always be on the first page, since it is found at the end of each group.
    Any suggestions?  Anything I'm missing?

    if you
    1) create a new formula for every section that counts the height of the section...
    whileprintingrecords;
    numbervar lines:= lines + .2 
    //use the above for a details section that is .2 inches in height
    whileprintingrecords;
    numbervar lines:= lines + 2.2
    //use the above for a group header section that is 2.2 inches in height
    2) do the above for every section (yes it's painful but it works) and you'll see how the sections add to the running total
    3) create a new details section that is conditionally suppressed if the page is not equal to 1 and if the running total count is not within a certain height range
    4) make this new details section the height that you want the remittance slip and also have a New Page After forced for the section conditional on it being page 1
    the above takes a bit of finicky work but if it's worth getting rid of the blank space...

  • Different page orientation in new section?

    I have a Word document I'd rather do in Pages, so I am recreating it. I need to have the first section in vertical orientation, and the second section in landscape (horizontal). Is there a way to do this? When I ask for a new section and change the page layout, it changes the whole document.

    I agree in some ways that you shouldn't change the good parts, but disagree on the point that if an outside idea is a good one it should not matter where it has been used.
    All programs have their faults and IMHO Pages has a disproportionate share, to the point I really find it difficult to use productively for almost any kind of work.
    I storm through work with iText Pro where I trundle in Pages. That is despite iText Pro having a relatively clumsy method of implementing and applying styles, and lacks floating objects.
    On more than one occasion I have tried to use Pages for serious work only to founder on one or more fatal stumbling blocks, despite having steadfastly ignored its maimed User Interface. You can't accuse me of not knowing the program.
    In the end there is its doomed .pdf output to put the nail into the coffin of any real work I might do.
    It holds a tantalising glimpse of what it could be however, and there is always the next version and the next version to inspire hope.

    Thanks, Jeff. I tried including the characteres in the Stop list and recompiling. (I even closed the project and reopened.) The characters still appear. The characters I'm trying to remove are: !, #, ', (, ), -, /, :, ;, and ,. I am also trying to exclude some numbers (100.00usd, 1999.99, 2999.99, 3999.99, 4999.99, and 6pm).
    The Stop list consists of those characters and the default text. Forgot to mention is the first post ... I'm using RH9.
    The Section 508 flag does create 508-compliant HTML output and that is one of the requirements for this help system. This is the first time I am enabling this flag.

    You will need to chat with either Oracle Support or PWC should have a Oracle Sales channel or something that can get you this information. I remember reading that they where heading in that direction... other than that it was not an issue for me.

    I want to create a tab control (tabstrip) similar to the sap corporate portal news section. How could i realize this very nice object? I was searching for similar threads but i think the creation of the tabcontrol via html is not a suitable solution. Any other ideas?
    I need this tab control to display our weekly company menu in a separate section.

    I want to create a very simple TabExplorer with following structure:
    Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday
    Each day contains the menu (lunch) and some other informations, which has to be maintained by the employee himself.
    @Detlef: Thank you for the information but is there just an easier way to realize this?

    I am trying to run a Section 508 Compliance Check using Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and do not have the option to change the name in the accessibility checker. 
    I can only choose categgories, not specific names.

    Run the full check, but with the understanding that the Acrobat XI checker, while a big improvement over the X version, is still not very thorough. Selecting a subset of test criteria would merely render the checker even more inadequate.
    For a much better PDF accessibility checker download the excellent, free PAC 1.3 from the Swiss foundation Access for All. You can find it here http://www.access-for-all.ch/en/pdf-lab/pdf-accessibility-checker-pac/dl132.html. PAC 1.3 tests for WCAG 2.0 compliance, but the 508 checklist maps to WCAG 2.0. You may notice that a newer version, PAC 2.0, is available but is still in beta and tests for more-difficult -to-meet ISO 14289 compliance. If you are interested, you can find the 508 PDF accessibility checklist here http://www.hhs.gov/web/508/accessiblefiles/checklistpdf.html.
    Finally, even the best automated checker can get you no more than about half way to an accessible PDF. Automated tests can verify that a PDF is tagged using correct syntax, but cannot determine if the tags are otherwise correct, ensure correct reading order, or verify that alt text is meaningful – to site just a few examples. Careful, knowledgeable manual inspection of the tag structure is essential. The PAC 1.3 screenreader preview is a big help in the necessary manual inspection – it lets you see what an assistive technology user would hear.
