  • Recommend a free online book

I read the tutorial on Java Security but I couldn't understand it. I think I have to know first what authentication, authorization, SSL (and other related matters) are and how they work. I already did a seach on google for this but there are many. Please recommend to me any free online book (for novice) where I can get a basic knowlege about security and how they works. Thanks for the help

Google for JCE and stuff from the IBM site. They have pretty good tutorials.

  • Effective Java Book Club

Me and a couple of colleagues are going to work through the new edition of the Java classic "Effective Java".
We are going at a moderate pace of one chapter each week.
I'd like to invite anybody interested in this to join us for discussion of the book's items.
To keep discussions separate and dedicated to the book, I have create a forum at [http://n2.nabble.com/Effective-Java-f34745.html|Nabble]
We will start discussing the first chapter on Mon, July, 21th (so that anybody has a chance to grab a copy and start reading).
This effort is not officially associated with the book, the author (Joshua Bloch), the publisher (Addison Wesley) or Sun Microsystems in any way.
"Effective Java" discusses intermediate to advanced topics and is the one Java-book I recommend to any serious Java developer who has mastered the basics.
    See [http://java.sun.com/docs/books/effective/|Effective Java Home Page]

    Thanks Philip.
Please note that there is absolutely no commercial interest at all plus the topic really is "Java Programming".
The book even is marketed by Sun itself and one of the two links is going to the book's page at sun.com.
The other is to an ad-free forum at a community site for a very specialized topic that does not fit into the forums here.
If there's anything that may benefit from this, it is sales of the book - though I doubt that that's necessary at all.

  • Java book/ebook or training site with examples

    Hello,
I need to improve myself on java basics, got a few books which explain a lot, however they don't have any examples. What I need is a book or tutorial_site which first introduces a topic then asks the reader to experience it on various examples to see different aspects.
    Thank you.

    Just a side note:
If you haven't already done so, I suggest your next step is to download the Eclipse IDE and get familiar with it (its free and used by a very large number of professional developers). You can create projects within it. However, I suggest you first create a few code samples from your introductory Java book using a text editor and compile using the DOS command window before moving onto an IDE so you can appreciate what it does for you.

  • Free online book about accessible design

Thanks to Adobe and some other sponsors, there's a new, free,
    online book
    being offered about accessible design:
    http://www.uiaccess.com/accessucd/contents.html
    -Darrel

Over the last few weeks I have had some very helpful
answers to my questions from the community on this
forum. I thought I'd put a little back in. I found
this online book and it is outstanding in its
explaination of Java. Anyone learning Java should
(imho) read it. And it is free!!
    http://www.mindview.net/Books/TIJ/
    Well worth a read.
    Cheers,
HughIt's a good book to buy too. I hate reading online, but after seeing how good this book is, I ordered it and found it was very reasonably priced.

  • Java books/reading over Christmas?

The last post got me thinking... Is there any Java book you'd like to get your hands on? (Santa, are you using Echelon to snoop? Filthy Rich Clients, please) Or will you be using the time to (re)read a book that's been sitting on the shelf? Or would you like to nominate the best new Java book of 2007? What are people reading?

I'll be reading my first Java book, which is "Java in a Nutshell" by o'Reilly. Really? That's pretty much like printing out the javadocs for the entire JDK and reading those.
I used to have a copy of it when I first started with Java, but now I find that the on-line stuff is more convenient and up to date.
I like it so far. I'm coming from C/C++ so I haven't had any difficulties understanding any of the syntax used. I hope to finish this 1224 page monster by Christmas or the first week after.I would not consider that to be a good tutorial or first book to read. Who suggested that?
Bruce Eckel's "Thinking In Java" is a much better choice. It's free and available on-line. Google for it. (He also has a "Thinking in C++", which you might like.)

  • Free Java Packages

    Hi,
This post might be a bit off topic, but I'll be glad if someone could help.
I am currently creating a GUI project using Swing. I wanted to know if I could get a list of some free Java packages that I could include in my project.
Eg. A voice recognition package that I can build my GUI around, etc.
A link to such a website with the packages would be very helpful.
    Thanks

If you want voice recognition, I suggest you wait
about 5 years. Unless your users have to use this
system for some reason, they are more likely to find
a keyboard easier and less error prone.I used voice recognition about 10 years ago and if was possible to train it to recognice commands from a person. I used it to enable computers for people who coldn't operate normal input devices. Voice recognition is also use today by doctors to control operating equipment and by fighter pilots in situations you need both hands free.

  • Free Java Database?

I'm looking for a free Java database. A few recommended MySQL, but after going to their site, it looks they charge and aren't free.
The database would be used in my own commercial product that would be sold to stores. Perhaps MySQL is just free for development? Anyone know?
If anyone knows of other free Java databases that would be appreciated too.
    Thanks,

You can always check out Postgres. And I'm not sure if they bundle it anymore, but there used to be a pure-Java database called Cloudscape (I think).

  • Java Book Recommendation?

    Hi,
I work a lot with scientific computation: reading in data, working with mathematical models, etc.
However, I can't find a Java book that tackles those aspects in depth.
Does anyone know of a good book on this topic?
    Regards,
    -mike

I am sorry you feel that way about my questions! For example, in scientific computing, we work a lot with differential equations, Fourier transforms and so on. I can of course, write a program that will do those computations from scratch - which would take a lot of time! Or, what if there was a Java package that do these calculations? By having a book which focuses on these issues, one can save a lot of time! So, I believe you may have misunderstood my questions.
    That's a different question.
Of course there exist libraries to aid in scientific and engineering computing.
Can't give you names as I'm not (sadly) into that field any more, but I do know they exist.
There are a few books that deal with Java and Scientific Computing that I found. These books prove that the questions that I posed here are relevant, and not a way of "give me the source" that you mentioned. Most people who replied to my questions were very polite as I have been - politeness is definitely an attitude that is much appreciated here!
Most such questions are from schoolkids who don't want to put in their own effort but just want to copy and paste sourcecode and turn it in as their own for their homework assignments.
That's how yours was understood to be as well.
Here is a list of the books I found:
    - A Numerical Library in Java for Scientists and Engineers by Hang T. Lau
    - Java for Scientists and Engineers (2nd Edition) by Stephen J. Chapman
    - Essential Java for Scientists and Engineers by Brian Hahn
    - Java Programming for Engineers by Julio Sanchez and Maria P. Canton
    - Java Gently for Engineers and Scientists by Judith Bishop and Nigel Bishop
    - Java for Engineers and Scientists by Gary J. Bronson
This is definitely a great list for people who want to apply Java in Science and Engineering.
May look at some, especially the first :)

  • Whats a good JAVA book?

What do you think is a good Java book for someone who has a little expericne with java? I have experience in COBOL and a little touch of C, and Visual Basic? Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Justin

I would suggest Java: an Introduction to Computer Science and Programming by Walter Savitch. This book assumes that the reader has no programming experience and it's aimed at students. I realize that you do have experience with COBOL, but I would recommend this one over the Core Java series to start out. Core Java volumes 1 and 2 are not good as an introduction for someone coming from a non-object oriented language. They would be a lot better for someone migrating from C++. They frequently refer to C++ and VB in their examples. They are excellent books, but better as a reference than an initial learning source.

  • Java Books

    Hi all,
I am a Java back-end,server-side programmer (junior to mid-level). Worked mostly on core Java. I would like to improve my Java programming skills. I know hundreds of books and tutorials are out there, but taught it might be a good idea to ask you guys first and have some idea before starting to buy any...
Does anybody know a good Java book that I can buy or a good tutorial that I can use (in order to improve my Java programming skills)?
Also I like to learn about 'web-services' (and maybe move toward that for my next job). Does anybody know of a good book or turorial for that?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • What's the best java book available?

Anyone knows any good, detail java book available out there for
    beginer/intermediate level programmer? Greatly appreciated.

    hi,
i would recommend Beginning Java 2 - SDK 1.4 Version, it's a good book for people starting off and moving to interm., the author covers the basics and more advanced topics later such as JDBC, working with XML and Java and Printing all in one book. Also half way through the book, once he starts talking about building GUI, he builds a small application, then for the next few chapters what ever is taught is also built into the app, the app he shows you how to build is something like ms paint. so he shows you not only how to write small programs but also building an application, i don't remember the size of it but i believe it was a few thousand lines long. he also builds a second app, smaller for working with databases later. the only problem is the size of the book and price, but if you have the time to read it, i'd recommend that one.

  • Which is the best free Java Obfuscator?

    Hello,
I am planning to deploy my application using Java Webstart and to protect my code from reverse engineering wondered - which is the best free Java Obfuscator?
    thanks,
    Anil

    Herko,
Thanks for your insight. With your explanation, I have more respect for your approach. I am a (struggling) one-man startup trying to get this thing off the ground. Yes, my idea can be learned by seeing it in action. That is why, advisors have told me to yank the demo from the web site (http://juwo.com)
I would hate to see someone else steal what I have done with a lot of trouble and even worse, use my own source code to do so. In short, I dont want to be a fool.
    thanks,
    Anil
I know the Proguard product, as well as several other
obfuscation tools. I know obfuscated stacktraces can
be reversed (as long as you go through the extra
trouble of maintaining the obfuscation mappings for
each version of the software you release). That was
    not my point.
I work for (and am part owner of) a small software
development company. We have invested 9 years into
writing enterprise-quality software that is provided
to customers all over the world. We used to think we
needed to obfuscate our software too. However, we
have found that the source code is by far the
least important aspect of what we do as far as
most of the outside world is concerned. Which
is why we have been developing a major part of our
software as Open Source since 1999. Which is why we
have switched completely to an Open Source strategy
earlier this year. That's right: all of our code is
(or soon will be) freely available to anyone,
    anywhere.
We have learned over the years that the most
important aspect of our work is not the code, but the
idea behind it. Obviously, this idea can not be
obfuscated without defeating the entire purpose of
the software. This means others are able to learn
about the idea just by seeing the software in action.
That alone enables them to implement that same idea.
The fact that they might use our source code to do it
    is largely irrelevant.
Going one step further, the most important aspect of
our work is actually the way we - the people who
made the software - use that idea solve the real
problems of our customers. It is that knowledge our
customers ultimately pay for, not the code.
With very, very few exceptions the basic idea of your
code will not be unique on a global market like the
Internet: sooner or later (and from our experience,
it's always sooner) someone will have the same idea.
Their implementation of that idea might be better
than yours, or it might be worse. What ultimately
matters, though, is wether or not you are able to
convince customers that the idea itself is sound.
    Customers buy solutions, not code.
