Does anyone have an idea what this means and what I might do to find the cause? This just started yesterday and occurs on an average of once every 20 to 30 minutes, even when the computer is idle during that time.

I think I found the source of my problem. I went backwards through the installation / service log, removing hardware from the VM's device list as I went. It stopped crashing when I removed a Roland SC-D70. I then put everything else back the way it was and still no crashes. Finally I installed and assigned new hardware to replace the SC-D70 in the VM and so far so good.

Press the Power button and hold it down until the computer turns off. Restart. Do you still get the same result? If so, then try booting into Safe Mode, then restart normally. A safe mode startup takes considerably longer than a normal one, so don't panic. You will also see a progress bar at the beginning.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You have got a Mid 2010 15-inch MacBook Pro, and the kernel panic shows that the NVIDIA GPU is damaged. This is a common problem in these Macs, and Apple repairs them for free if they were purchased less than two years ago.
A solution to prevent this issue is to get gfxCardStatus and set it to use the integrated graphic card, but you will have problems with applications like Adobe Photoshop. Anyway, you should take the computer to an Apple Store to get it repaired

  • Frequent Kernal Panics

    Hi there,
I've gotten a few kernal panics on my black macbook (pretty sure it's the first generation one). It's always been plugged in and I usually have a combination of illustrator, flock and msn open.
Also when I restart it takes a super long time to load up in the grey screen with the spinner.
Does anyone know what going on?

No, it is really clear that something is not
standardized. This has been a problem since the very
first Mac operating system. There are known working
routers, and those that don't. By buying cheaper,
you always risk getting something that won't work
reliably. Do research, and you'll find the real
working stuff before you buy. I'm living proof you
can have 10.4.10 without a problem.
I don't get your point. There are standards and specs for WiFi gadgets, but it's quite tricky to implement them correctly. This is true for all networking protocols, though most have been patched and tweaked to the point where interoperability is quite good.
Something changed in 10.4.10, to cause the sudden outbreak of problems seen in this forum.
I haven't had problems with WiFi on 10.4.10 either, but that doesn't really mean 10.4.10 didn't break something, or that 10.4.10 is more conformant to standards.
I almost wish I knew somebody who's having the current WiFi trouble, so we could try that computer with my linksys box.
Anyway, you suggest doing research. All the research in the world wouldn't change the fact that 10.4.9 was working, and 10.4.10 isn't, for a lot of users. It doesn't really matter how much you spend. I'm doing fine with a $50 linksys using OpenWRT (free!) Linux firmware.

  • Frequent Kernal Panics and was told it could be drivers?

I recently was given an iMac G4 in fantastic condition (used for less than a year with no history of trouble). It was running 10.3, and after a few issues, I had Leopard installed. Things were okay for the first 2 weeks, but then we started seeing KPs. About 6 spanning from January to today.
I don't know how to read a kernal report, but I did ask some Mac users online who say they think it's software related, possibly bad drivers on something. Again, I have no idea what could be causing it, but I do know that the upgrade to Leopard wasn't smooth and I had to do it twice (it corrupted the first time). Also, this is a shared computer, so I'm not fully aware of everything that's been installed.
This is what my last KP report looked like:

Can anyone give me an idea of what "driver" or software could possibly be giving me the trouble?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the response.
Yes, I think PG is some sort of security thing. I didn't install that one, but I did install Little Snitch. I know both of these were on my last G4 and there was never an issue and this one is slightly more powerful at 1.25Ghz (my other one was 1Ghz) and they both had the same RAM amount, but I will look into an upgrade.
I didn't do archive/install on my first attempt from 10.3 to 10.5. That was clean and it errored out. The second time, I did do Archive/Install (my roommate thought the install worked, since 10.5 showed as the OS, so she added her music and docs and didn't want to do it all over again). Someone at a mac tech forum told me I should wipe the drive completely and reinstall Leopard from scratch. Does that sound like a good plan to you?
Also, I'm not sure if this is related, but whenever I repair permissions, these come up:
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/OpenDirectory.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks /CFOpenDirectory.framework/Versions/A/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/ CoreText.framework/Versions/A/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/CoreVideo.framework/Versions/A/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/CoreServices/NetAuthAgent.app/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .
Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/OpenDirectory.framework/Versions/A/CodeResour ces", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .
Whether I repair them from Disk Utility on the computer, or from the Leopard disc, I they come up and they're never fixed. I know certain permissions messages can be ignored, but I'm not sure if these can be included in that.
    Thanks for your input.

  • MBP Frequent Kernal Panics

I returned my first model (hardware test resulted in errors) due to kernal panics. Now my second model is having the same problem. I have reinstalled OS X, the extended hardware test gives no errors, and yet I get a kernal panic at least once every 24 hours. The worst was yesterday, I had 3 in one day. I have stopped using Adium, Quicksilver, MS Office and Adobe software (although they are still installed). My last kernal panic happened when I was simply running Safari and iChat. I am hoping that someone else is sharing my pain, this is quite disturbing!
I have a 2.0 MBP with 1gig of Apple ram, everything stock. Here is the panic.log:

    seagonus:
Thanks for your input. I see the airport data as well, but like you, I really don't have enough knowledge to determine if that is the actual cause.
If it were, what are the odds that I would get two completely seperate units with the same hardware error? I have searched the forums and I didn't see any other reports of airport hardware error. Anybody else seeing that?
To address your suggestion: Wouldn't doing a complete wipe and reformat accomplish the same thing as creating another user account?
Also, the only peripheral that I am using is my cellphone over bluetooth, and there does not seem to be a relationship between the phone and the kernal panics, ie. it crashes whether the phone is connected or not.
As much as I would like to find a solution, I would be happy to hear at least that I am not the only MBP owner with this many kernal panics. Thanks for your help so far!

  • Kernal Panic (0) cpu not supported

2 yr old Imac with 8 gig memory. SN 10.6.8.
Cannot boot computer. Get the above kernal panic. Occurs on safe mode boot, boot from DVD, as well as standard boot.
Everything was fine until I tried booting from the SN DVD. Then the kernal panic started. It occurs after the apple is displayed on the screen.
    Dead cpu? Help please.

    Imac 24 inch
    3.06 Core duo
    4gb ram
    Geforce 8800 GS
    1TB Hitachi HDD
When opening new applications, mild multi tasking or even sleeping Imac has been crashing. I backed up all files and re wrote the hard drive x1 and reinstalled Yosemite , problem still exists.
CPU Diode is currently 38 degrees C . Don't know if is a heat issue but have UP'd the fan speeds.
Here is a copy of the error report :

Any help appreciated before I open her up!
I had multiple crashes attempting to post this. Desktop at the point of not useable. GPU temps are between 35 C and 60 C.
Also I can not get computer to crash in safe mode.

Is it possible to add a different card
Not to my knowledge. Whatever card you use would need to have Mac-specific firmware, so don't bother trying a PC card.

Uninstall McAfee first and see how that goes, you really don't need always on anti-virus, a free ClamXav run as you need it anti-virus is less conflciting, plus some hardening techniques.
Harden your Mac against malware attacks
Update the other software and run like that, or remove the problem ones with their uninstaller.
If you ever get a Gray screen and it won't log in, then reboot holding the Shift Key down for Safe mode to disable the third party at boot kernel extension files.

  • Frequent Kernal Panics since upgrading to ML

    Hi,
I've been trawling through a lot of discussions on this forum and think I'm not alone with the problem that their system keeps crashing at random ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion.  Unfortunately, I haven't found a single resolution to this so I'm posting one of the zillion panic reports I have in the hope that someone can help.
Bit of background - my MacBook crashes at random (it seems that its more likely to happen when activating launchpad, mission control or switching applications).  Without warning it will restart and display the error "Your computer restarted because of a problem...".
I have tried repairing disk permissions, repairing disk, doing a clean install, resetting my PRAM and now I've finally erased the HD and installed from scratch but I still have the problem.  I have absolutely no other software on my mac and yet it is still unstable.
I'm running 10.8.2 on a 15" MBP (mid 2010), 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5. 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.  On "About This Mac" it shows my Graphics is Intel HD Graphics 288 MB but if I go into system report I also see NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
Can anyone help??  Below is my panic report -

  • Panic; panic(cpu 0 caller 0x2a6ac2): Kernel trap at 0x0028d3e6

Hello togehter, my old macbook had fallen down from 4m height. I gave it for repairing to a certified apple reseller and they said that just the hard-Disk was gone. After 3 months I had a similair problem like here (https://discussions.apple.com/message/19543117#19543117) and it is starting only now and then...
I gave it two times for repairing, but they just changed the hard disk. I am afraid that there is even damage of the logic board and the graphics...
If anybody could help me I would be very glad...

    Hi Mike,
ok I uninstalled Parallels and did all software updates till 10.6.8. I also did Apple Hardware Test, it said that everything is ok. Till now I didn't have any kernel panics any more but I have to say that I didn't work with that macbook for over a year now... hope that is working now again without any problems.
Do you think that it is possible to install Maveriks on it? Does it make sense in case to prevent further kernel errors?

  • PANIC LOG - CPU 0 Called - Please can someone interpret for me?

I'd appreciate anything you can enlighten me with - I've recently lost everything to a rootkit. The people at Mac Store wouldn't believe me Here's the panic log when it restarted by itself last night - I was not connected to the net and I've now zero'ed all but the 1/4 of my hard drive which is a damaged partition from the constant attempts to restore it.

    BDAqua -
Thanks for your reply. I was in such a hurry when I first posted this log, that I tried to cram too much information in to the little paragraph which preceded the panic log.
A month or so ago, I was on a website for a local DVD store where you book first then go and collect them from the express store closest to you. I found it strange that I got a pop up window telling me that (words to the effect) The Vendor is using an out of date version of xxxx.xxx, remind them to install newest version. (xxx.xxx = unfamiliar program and string of letters after it). I dismissed the error and went to keep browsing the DVD online catalogue. It's unknown to me, as I said - first time I'd used their service, at the recommendation of my friend who was next to me, she's the member.
My computer (which had an external Hard Drive connected to it at the time) became completely unresponsive and froze for several minutes, resumed fine and froze again. I had no option but to restart it.
I disconnected my external Hard Drive whilst it was turned off, and restarted. When I rebooted, my computer was blank. Then, frame by frame, the windows returned. I watched as they popped in to the display, again I've never seen graphics like it. The OS started and was on the screen, but I couldn't interact with it. Then I had the grey screen saying I needed to restart the computer. I was still connected to the internet for this whole time, I hadn't put any thought in to it being an issue.
I tried to restart the computer several times and it came up with the grey screen each time, telling me to restart it. I used a friend's 10.5 Disc to boot off and the Verify/Repair in Disk Utility returned no changes, reported the HD was fine.
I took it home and over the next few days, continually came up against the same grey screen or cd-boot options. There seemed to be no option but to wipe it and start again. I'd had this computer for 4 straight years without a single issue until this point.
I decided to forfeit the content of my Hard Drive as I knew I had a back up (on the External HD which was connected at the time of the initial crash).
I could not zero the disk before installing again, I tried 4 or 5 times and it would freeze every time around 14 mins remaining in the task. So, I chose the quick install option. Bad move.
I got the system up and running again, knowing that if I wanted it, at this point, something like Disk Warrior or a similar third-party program to assist in possibly rescuing some of my Data. I decided to let it go. Done, I thought - phew. I connected to the 'Net in order to do the long sequence of required updates using Software Updater. Only two hours or so in to this (boring) process, when my computer screen faded in front of me. Just when I thought it was unresponsive, my screen displayed a very retro looking OS, like something I saw as a teenager in highschool, it was Mac but it was very very old.
Then the fright of my life when the pointer began moving by itself, closing the updater windows and opening various other things and closing them. Then the Terminal screen appeared, typing appeared as if someone was on the other side of the room playing some joke on me (I was at home, no pranksters there) - then it shut down. I restarted it, and it started with a grey screen with a highly detailed cartoon image of a world globe in the middle, and as I tried to move the cursor, the world thingo started to spin slowly. The more I tried to get a pointer to appear, the faster the world thing would spin in the middle of the screen.
The grey screen gave way to the UNIX command screen, it looked like what you get if you start in Single User Mode. (Which I've only done since this stuff happened, I didn't know it existed before)
I didn't (do now!) know any basic commands in that language, all I knew was I didn't know what I was doing and not to mess with it. So I forced it to power off. When I restarted it, my hard drive and CPU fan began to run very fast and the OS was unresponsive to ME - but it was doing things as if someone else had my mouse. The more I tried to get the pointer to do what I wanted, the faster the selections it made seemed to get. It got so frantic and fast that I can't even tell you what it was opening, things were being written in the Terminal/Unix language, the mouse was opening/closing windows, dragging things to trash, highlighting certain folders and changing Permissions - I freaked right out. I didn't know what to do, the HD was going so hard and fast, and all I had was a computer that seemed to be controlled by anyone else.
I'll stop here because I know this is getting long - I contacted the online DVD store at their Headquarters and described what had happened, leaving absent that since then I'd lost everything as I couldn't be sure what caused it, I can only milestone the events around it with the very odd error message which I clicked to dismiss.
They've since contacted me several times to enquire about any consequences re my computer, if any. At this point I asked them several questions and they finally admitted that their site was compromised for 72hours and yes, it was a malicious script on their page and they were aware of 39 other cases where Mac users had suffered "catastrophic data loss". They've since offered to have my computer serviced etc. I'm undecided on their integrity and have had it looked at privately, I told my Local Geeks about the correspondence with the DVD rental company, and the two parties communicated. Later, I was told it was confirmed to be a rootkit which had inserted and activated almost simulaneously, which is apparently an unusual thing. And yes, it was the dodgy webpage.
I'm too scared to plug my External HD in again, for fear I've lost all of my back up.
That's how I know I'd been hit by a rootkit.
This latest post is referring to the error message I received this morning.
After the massive fail described above, I had the Local Geek company look at my computer to find what had happened, zero the disk and reinstall my OS X 10.4 from the disk which came with the computer. To be honest, I couldn't justify anything beyond that - and I don't have a great deal of flash cash to burn.
I haven't had a problem since, although I am only just starting to realise how much I've lost. The computer was given back to me with three partitions (also foreign concept to me), and the last quarter has been unwritable since I got it reinstalled by Local Geeks. (Yes, that's a business name)
I didn't think much of it, that third partition no longer mounts and Disk Warrior confirms it's damaged beyond repair. The first error message said it was physically damaged from too many attempts to write to it in a particular sector, the second time I asked it to run its tests, it told me that part of the HD has an error which can't be fixed, something to do with B-tree/nodes.
As I said, I haven't thought much about it, I have a computer back and oh well it's a section of HD space I can't use - I don't have any data left to put back on it anyway.
Then, I got this error msg today when I started it up. This is why I have asked you for advice, I'm only sorry I couldn't give you more background earlier, I just rushed it to hopefully get replies by the time I got back.
I'll run the Hardware diagnostic on 2nd disk, but I fear it'll stall on the damaged part of my HD - do you think this is still best action? What does "Called on CPU 0" mean, etc?
I hope the background makes sense. It was surreal and very upsetting to see my computer being controlled by something/someone else. Not to mention losing everything.

  • Help, panic CPU caller 2

    Hi,
any help would be great. Was watching a video on you tube when safari crashed (spinning rainbow). I couldn't force quit so i forced the computer to shut down by pressing the power button. I tried to reboot and now on the grey screen with apple logo i now get the below error come up:
panic(CPU 2 caller 0xffffff80111cdf34): "process 1 exc of /Sabin/launchd failed....... And it keeps going.
DOes anyone know what this is or how rectify it.. I've tried booting in safe mode and it keeps repeating this long message on the apple logo screen.
    Thanks

    Hello weaves56,
Performing a Safe Boot is where I would have started as well if I were getting this panic message at the gray loading screen. I would recommend the other troubleshooting steps in the following article to help you isolate and resolve the issue here:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Just start at the top, and work your way down to the bottom as needed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling
