Fresh install produces kernel panic
Oh boyz,
I really don't know where to continue....
Several days I goofed around, I really hope somebody can help me
further. OK, here's my story...
I run a fine ARCH on a laptop, I joined half a year ago. I started with
a 2.4 kernel, and then got updated until the recent 2.6.19 now. At that
point, let me say BIG THX to you arch guys. You are really doing a fine
work. I hope I can give something back to the community some day.
Some days ago I purchased a second laptop, a Siemens 1,8 Celeron with
a 40GB disc. So, it's not a very exotic thing, it's simply a (kinda
old) working horse.
I took my 0.7 floppies and started a floppy-ftp install. So far so good.
Everything went well, internet connection and so on until....... I
rebooted the "new" :-) system.
BTW: The configuration is not very exciting.... no extra partioning, no
special hardware. So I stepped through the installation guide and tried
to figure out via the search function of the forum what went wrong.
Believe it or not, I am trying for several days to get the machine
running. I CAN'T GET RID OF THAT:
hda: cache flushes supported
hda: hda1 hda2 hda3
hdc: ATAPI 24X CD-ROM drive...
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
done.
:: Running Hook [filesystems]
:: Loading root filesystems module... ext3
:: Initramfs Completed - control passing to kinit
ATTENTION:
If you get a kernel panic below and are using an Intel chipset, append
'earlymodules=piix' to the kernel commandline
IP-Config: no devices to configure
kinit: Cannot open root device hda3(3,3)
kinit: init not found
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init
OK, what did I try ? At first (of course) to append the
earlymodules=pixx in the menu.lst of GRUB. No effect.
Then renaming the devices in fstab and menu.lst from hdax to sdx. No
effect. Hm. Installing a 2.4 kernel failed, it could not be found by
the installer. BTW, the "i8042.panicblink=0" is a fine thing to get rid
of the "Spurious Ack" message, which covers the original error messages
very quickly.
So... can somebody help me of give me a hint ?
What I suppose....I think that the installation procedure using the
available floppy images is not enough for installing the recent
kernel, it needs some manual tuning. But which ?
Maybe its a good idea to append some configuration infos:
(menu.lst)
title ARCH
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda3 i8042.panicblink=0 ro
initrd /kernel26.img

/dev/hda3 / ext3 defaults 0 1
/dev/hda1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
/dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0

LOCALE stuff...
MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
MOD_BLACKLIST=()
MODULES=(floppy)
USELVM="no"
...network stuff...
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond)

Strange system behavior on MBP, no way to install OS, kernel panics keeps happening
Hi ,
I have a MBP mid 2009, with 8G Ram and 500 GB hard disk, the problem started 2 month ago when I was copying my files into my external hard drive due to strange crashes and kernel panics, that was the last time when My MBP was alive, a kernel panic happened and No safe mode, no PRAM resetting and no clean install nothing was working, I could not use disk verification or repair using original Snow leopard disk utility so i had to go to a repair center for formatting the hard disk.
By the time first crashes started I was using lion installed from app store. But i never could install it again, i had to change the hard disk which was not identified by any other computer as well, so now I use a brand new hard disk, but even now the installation fails every time I try to clean install, the only way to make it work is to install the snow leopard on my USB disk and then restore the image on internal drive which Has a single partition, however the main problem is still there,
For further information i have to add that I am not using bootcamp for windows or any VM tools,I have used the memtest for testing RAM and all tests passed, the disk repair and permission repair also finished successfully. The performance is ok there is no delay in performing tasks but randomly application start to quit unexpectedly and sometimes there is one kernel panic a day but some times there are 3 in 15 min!
Any suggestion that what might be wrong? Thanks for prompt response clinton,
I dont have acess to terminal now becuase i am using apple test for checking hardware again,
i have used AHT several times before with no alert or error but just now i got the following error when there was 2 4 Gb ram installed
4mem/4/400000000 0 ac 112098
And when i checked the Rams one by one I got this error for both of them
4mem/4/400000000 0xac 10b618
I have tested rams using memtest before and it passed all the tests,
the strange point is for all three tests which i have done so far using AHT they took less than 2 min but now i am checking first ram in upper slot and its almost 15 min and its less than 20% progress, could it be a sign that lower slot got problem?
I will post requested info asap. -
None of the updates could be installed. Kernel panic
Today I tried to install the two updates that apple had in store for me:
IPhoto
Thunderbolt
The installer asked me to reboot and I said yes.
After a while, the installer said:
None of the updates could be installed.
I pressed the only button: restart
After staring at the canvas background for over 5 minutes, I hard-rebooted the iMac.
Now I get a kernel panic when I boot!!!
What to do?
iMac 2011
Mac os x. Latest update
WouterDitto for me: kernel panic...repeatedly.
What do I do if I am running Lion Server?! When I attempt to reinstall Lion it tells me:
"You cannot install Mac OS X on a server volume. You need to use Disk Utility to erase this volume before you can continue to install Mac OS X."
Well, I don't want to erase my volume...so how do I recover?
Thanks for any help, it is much, much appreciated.

Install CD kernel panic (0.7.2)
Hi to all on this forum, and a big thanks to developers of this distro.
I get kernel panic when booting the install CD.
That is: I put the arch-0.7.2 install CD in my CDrom, then i type "arch(-noscsi) earlymodules=piix (or earlymods=piix) ide-legacy noapic nolapic etc., etc.
When I hit enter some lines whizz by till the line "Loading all-modules from CD" (or something).
After that I get: <0> Kernelpanic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt.
The machine is: PentiumII 233MHz, 32MB ram, Hercules Graphics card & some HDD (yep, it's still alive! )
Thank you for your help.
ps. I get the same error with Ubuntu 6.10 install/live CD, but it requires 128MB ram. At first I thought it was ram...One more thing for ppl with 32MB ram or less(?).
When using the quickinst script I got the "not enough space on the device" error. And the problem is that the script is using the /tmp dir to extract the packages into. But /tmp dir in my case was about 14Megs, way to small. Luckily for me, I have prepared a swap partition with 256Megs. I unmounted /tmp (tmpfs), reformated swap with mke2fs and remounted it as /tmp. Problem solved. I know I could fiddle with a script, but I'm not a scripting freak.
[Idea for developers:] Maybe you can use /mnt/tmp which is on the harddisk, instead of tmpfs which is in RAM.
I have to resolve some issues with config files now, my boot stops around "Starting uDevices" or something.
Cheers to all, hope it helps. -
Restoring From TM Backup Produces Kernel Panic
Hi.
OK, so here's how I got to the problem:
My hard drive failed, so I took it to the Apple Store and they gave me a new one (they also replaced a semi-broken SuperDrive and a I got a new 'top case' because of a sticky power button).
Before I left the store, I turned on the computer to make sure it booted.
It played the welcome movie.
I didn't want to set up OS X right in the store, so I held down the power button to turn it off. Once I got home, I turned it on again. It didn't play the welcome movie this time.
Once it got to the point in the installer where I could choose to restore from a TM backup, the backup that I had connected did not appear in the list(it is on one of two partitions of a WD 500GB drive).
So, I pressed cmd-q to quit. It told me that it wasn't done installing, I said restart anyway.
This time, I booted from my Mac OS X installation DVD.
I selected English, then pressed continue and waited for the menu bar to appear.
I chose Utilities-> Restore From Backup.
This time, my backup appeared. I chose my backup volume, then the most recent backup, then my internal drive as the destination.
It began the long (roughly 45 mins) process of copying all my files back.
At the end, I clicked restart.
The computer turned on, and:
Kernel Panic!
So, here's what else I tried:
I've tried erasing and zero-ing out the internal drive, then reinstalling 10.5.2 (what's on my install DVD).
However, the backups I'm restoring from are 10.6.2.
Could the OS difference be a problem?
However, Apple said that they had installed 10.6.2 when I picked up the computer from the repair. And it didn't work even then.
Could it be the partitioning of the backup drive?
Also, a couple weeks ago, I stopped being able to back up with Time Machine.
I got an error message that not all the files were copied, and that the backup had failed. I checked, and yes, the disk was corrupted. I fixed it with Disk Utility. But, I still couldn't back up.
So, I've been restoring from the last backup that I've been able to make.
However, thinking that there might be a problem with that one, I am currently waiting for a restore from a backup made the previous day (roughly 4 backups ago) to finish.
Any ideas, anyone?
How can I fix this without losing my data?
Thanks in advance, any help would be GRATEFULLY appreciated. (Sorry for the long post!)nate12345 wrote:
Yeah, it is the SL disc. I am trying an older backup as I write this.
When you say to erase the drive, which do you mean?
The internal drive, or the backup drive?
internal drive. reformat it with disk utility on the snow leopard dvd and then restore. make sure the drive is formatted correctly. it should have GUID partition scheme and be formatted Mac Os extended journaled. then quit disk utility and proceed with the install. on the reboot after the install is finished you'll get setup assistant which will offer to migrate your data from a TM backup. but don't do any fo this till you tried a full system restore from an earlier time point. it might work.
Do I need to zero-out the drive?
no, there is no need to do that.
Thanks again! -
OnOne install triggered kernel panic - error window will not go away?
Running Yosemite on a laptop. All software updated. Have Creative Cloud - use Bridge and Photoshop CS 6 mostly.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Hello -
I followed a post in a photography forum to download download OnOne's Portrait Professional 9.0. While running the the demo code set up I received a message saying that there was a 9.1 or 9.01 and did I want to install that. I selected that option and scripts seemed to have installed just fine - until everything froze. I left the machine alone for twenty minutes and had to do a hard reboot.
When things came back to life, I had an error window appear (screen cap below appeared *after* I performed all outlined steps).
The options of Ignore and Report both do nothing that I can see. Clicking on either makes the window go away for a few moments and then it pops back. Switching graphics acceleration preference doesn't change anything.
I checked for updates through the App store. Nothing. I rebooted in safe mode, ran disk utilities, and – the warning window was still there. Googled uninstall all OnOne software, went to their site for code to uninstall, found it, ran utilities, turned machine off, went for coffee. still same problem. Apple forums don't seem to have a clear solution. Adobe/Photoshop seemed to have something - but the page does not exist.
One suggested solution is to reinstall the operating system.
: - |
Does anyone know how to repair this issue?
Thank youIt has taken a while to sort this out.
Two suggestions I found referenced managing files within ~/Library/
I followed their lead, but the window remained.
I downloaded and ran a copy of "Clean My Mac 2" and the problem
went away. Good that it is gone; bad that I do not know exactly
what was done to solve the problem.
Regardless of my obsessive need to understand the "why and what,"
the fact is that I am able to work again without that pesky window and
ultimately, that's what matters most.
Good luck out there! -

So now I am a little worried. Do you have any ideas?
The deadline for a refund was the 17... Do you think that in such a case I would be eligible for an exchange?
Thank you very much for your help.

Kernel panic at startup from HD and disc
Hi
My (early 2008) Mac Pro recently froze and wouldn't boot from the HD. I managed to start it once from a Snow Leopard install disc and carry out a disk repair on the HD. Now it won't boot from the HD or the install disc. When I try to boot it from HD it freezes, and when I try to boot it from CD I get a kernel panic. Dont have the original install disc so can't run Apple Hardware Test. But did manage to boot in target disc mode fine and get the kernel panic logs:

Guessing I have a hardware issue, but seems to be 2 different problems when I boot from HD or install disc. Can anyone tell me what these logs mean/
Thnx
SimonI am having the same problems as Simon_S, except, so far, nothing is fixing things.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 on my first HD, and Snow Leopard on the second. The third drive is empty ATM, and the 4th is my old HD from my G5.
I can access Ubuntu the way I always have (option key, choose drive, select Ubuntu on GRUB.) I can only start up SL by going to the GRUB like I would for Ubuntu, but choosing Mac OSX instead.
The comp freezes if I try to just start up by pressing the power button, or if I press option and choose the Mac drive. Same for if I go to Startup Disk in System Preferences, choose the Mac HD and restart.
I have done a PRAM reset (after which the opening "ding" is louder, for some reason) as well as an SMC reset.
I've uninstalled Parallels through the terminal, to try to make sure it's all gone.
Trying to start up the install disk causes a kernal panic.
Trying to run a hardware test causes a freeze. If I'm still holding the "D" key when it freezes, I hear a tapping noise.
The computer freezes when trying to start up in safe mode. I THINK I'm giving it enough time. The spinning gear/sun thing is replaced by a bar, which fills to about 1/4 to 1/3 full, then stops. I wait a few minutes, but when nothing progresses, I shut it down.
Disk Utility claims that all of the drives are ok, but Ubuntu's scan gives me a "value" on the error read rate that is definitely NOT zero, so I'm thinking there is a problem with the HD the Mac OS is on. The "value" on the Ubuntu HD is zero.
Prior to my start up problems, I was wrestling with graphics/video card issues on Ubuntu. Those haven't been resolved yet. I've stopped messing with those while I try to figure out what is going on now. I'll leave out the details for now, but if you think they might be relevant, let me know.
While in SL the way I currently start it up, I can't put the computer to sleep. In Ubuntu, I can't start back up from suspend.
On SL, the system is not detecting any sound devices, in or out.
I'm limited on what I can do as far as fixing things. Funds are short, and I don't have the Extended Care. This comp is a hand-me-down after my dad got one of those new macs that are all in the monitor.
I'm hoping for any input or advice I can get. Is the Mac HD FUBAR? Could I format it from the Ubuntu HD and install SL through the Ubuntu terminal? Whatever I end up doing, I have to come out of this with a working machine. Dad's not going to be moving up to a new machine for at least 3 years (his usual time frame :P) and if this thing croaks, I'm stuck sharing my husband's Windows machine again. Please save me from Windows! -
Kext causing kernel panic? Need help troubleshooting, please.
Hello all,
I'm a new face here and have been fortunate enough to never really need support, however at this point, I'm completely lost. First of all I want to apologize if my English is bad, Swedish is my native language.
My specs:
MBP 5,1 (late 2008) 15.4"
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2,53 GHz
Memory: Apple native 4GB
Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B05
System Version: Mac OS X 10.7.2 (11C74) Lion
Kernel Version: Darwin 11.2.0
SATA HDD: ST9250410AS Seagate Momentus 7200RPM 250GB
I have a very annoying problem that I dont know how to solve. When I try to boot my MBP normally I get kernel panic before getting to the login-screen. The kernel panic occurs 1-2 minutes into loading while the gray Apple-logo still is on screen.
Booting in safe mode works just fine (wifi, wired network and other critical os x functions works - While gfx-, audio-, spotlight-, etc. kexts are disabled). This problem occurred a few months ago while using the MBP normally (e.g. browsing the web). Since then I have done the following troubleshooting:
1. Switched to other HDD:s with both Snow Leopard-/Lion set-ups (fresh installs, same kernel panic)
2. Tried to reinstall from USB (same kernel panic)
3. Zapped PRAM
My thoughts: Some non-essential component in my MBP is malfunctioning, but since it works just fine in safe boot mode I figure that if I disable/remove the right kext(s) it should boot up fine in normal mode as well? (without the functionality of the component(s) that is disabled)
Im having a hard time to localize the origin of the error since I dont have any experience of interpreting Mac kernel logs.
Maybe you guys have any answers? Ill be eternally thankful for any thought, advice och help I can get!
I have recorded logs from two different crashes:

However I cant manage to find the panic logs in the library/logs/ or any of its directorys. Ive looked for this logs before and my guess is that they dont get created if the panic occurs during boot. -
Multiple kernel panics a day - only using Lion, not Snow Leopard
Hey,
would be nice if anyone could help me.
I recently updated to 10.7 - when installing, Lion crashed two times with kernel panics, since then I get kernel panics every 5-10 minutes (sometimes I can work several hours until the kernel panics appear).
What I already tried:
- reinstalling Snow Leopard (no kernel panics; too bad all my SL-TimeMachine-Backups are lost...)
- reinstalling a clean Lion (even with nothing installed, many kernel panics...)
- PRAM-reset
- repaired volume and permissions with disk utility
here are the two last kernel panics:

Constant Kernel Panics on fresh install of 10.8.2
Ever since upgrading to 10.8.2, my Mid 2010 MBP gets Kernel Panics related to the NVidia kext at least 5 times a day. When will apple finally fix this?? Here's the full kernel panic. It's the same thing every time. I have no third party .kext installed. I've blown this out and installed from 10.8 disc twice. It never starts to KP until the 10.8.2 update is applied. This is not hardware related since I did a fresh install of windows on the bootcamp partition as well and it runs just fine without crashing. On 10.8.2 it crashes without any peripherals plugged in except the charger and ethernet cable. I'm not ever taxing the system. It has safari or chrome open and that's it.

Apple has determined that a small number of MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) computers may intermittently freeze or stop displaying video on the built-in display or on an external display connected to the MacBook Pro. In this situation, you may also see a restart warning message before the video is lost or the display turns black or gray. Affected computers were manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011.
This precisely is what has been happening with my system. I took it in a few months ago to a Apple authorized service centre and was denied coverage by Apple citing it wasn't the correct "cause" they were looking for; stating the problem originated in the CPU and not the graphics - but if we look at the problem they state - intermittently freeze of stop of video display, that is the same issue. Since then I have been back and forth with Apple trying to get a straight answer as to what the problem is with my machine, the exact specific of what they "cover" (they seem to make it up as they go along) and how my issue isn't the issue they're covering. Would also note my system has degraded to the point it is completely unusable and is now a really expensive paper weight. I took it in a second time to a different place, and they couldn't even diagnose the issue - Apple now cites they can't cover it because they don't have an error code.
Anyone who has been following this issue would also note how many times and how much the wording in that tech note (TS4008) has changed since it was first posted around September 2011 and would remember the second note (something about the display going black randomly) that has since been merged with TS4008 and now has been removed altogether from the note. -
Following an Apple Support Team member's advice, I retrieved as many files as I could and erased and repaired the HD before completing a fresh install from a bootable USB. Once I restored all of my software I set it backing up to Time Machine over night only to find that it had crashed and restarted over night before that had completed. I attach the crash report below:

Frequent Kernel Panic - Fresh install
Hi there,
I have a 15" MBP retina late 2013. I have done a fresh install of Yosemite 10.10.2 (erase disk and install)
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
I am suffering from Kernel Panic and the intensity seems related to the intensity I use the machine.
For example, just browsing on the internet, Kernel Panic may happen maybe once a day... but if i start more processing intense activity, it will be within a few minutes. For example, if I connect 2 external screens via Thunderbolt, it will kernel panic within seconds. Another example, if when I am installing iMovie and iPhoto, everything goes ok during download, and then within minutes of the install, it will go kernel panic... this is valid for any install from the app store, as soon as I launch 2 or more... but even with 1... it will just take a little bit longer to get the kernel panic.
I have attached the last Kernel panic log while I was downloading some apps from the App store.

DavidThanks Linc Davis,
Can I ask you to share the reasoning leading to hardware issue diagnostic? This is because I will need it to argue with Apple Support. I have spent countless hours on the phone with them, performing many diagnostic tools (disk utility, Apple Diagnostics) and then under the guidance of senior tech, I have install, re-install, formatted, usb-install... Apple support seems focus on a software issue but when you have formatted the disk and done a perfectly clean install, what software issue is left ? I would also intuit a hardware issue but unless I can pinpoint exactly which hardware I make them change, I am just afraid it will not change much on my current status. -
Fresh install, fresh upgrade, fresh kernel panic
Giving ArchLinux a second go here, and I've hit a rut:
I installed from CD, with only the base packages selected. Once the system was up, I did a pacman -Syu, replaced the 3 programs it prompted me for (sorry, I can't remember them - the same three every installation, but the names I can't remember). It upgraded with no errors, at which point I did a reboot.
That's when I got a kernel panic. Here's the last few lines:
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
Time: tsc clocksource has been installed
No filesystem could mount root, tried:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)Intrepidus wrote:
Apparently my problem was easier than I thought.
I found another post on this through Google that required me to change the image to kernel26-fallback.img, and add earlymodules=piix to the kernel line.
It's all better now!
Could you please explain here in more detail what you did?
I am trying GNU/Linux for the first time, and I am having a hard time when I get this error..
*edit*
I tried to google it myself, and all I needed to do was to edit my grub configuration.
I changed the initrd line to:
initrd /boot/kernel26.img
this worked for me.

Kernel panic on fresh install 10.8.2
I have tried multiple times to install 10.8.2 on my mid 2009 15in MBP. I constantly get stuck with kernel panics. I have tried doing a 7 times erase and resetting the PRAM. I can only log in with a safe boot. The system diagnotic report is as follows:
