Front end fails to connect to db

I have put together a M$ Access 2000 frontend to an Oracle db. I don't have any tables linked. I use SQL pass-through queries for everything I need to do, and so far it is all read-only.
It works for me, but I've sent it to someone at another location and she just gets errors. She has the information in the tnsnames.ora file, she has the ODBC Data Source set up with the same driver I have. Now here's the catch... If she manually makes a link to a table in the db (the link isn't used for anything!) it will work fine.
Any clues to this mystery are greatly appreciated.

My other pet peeve - Error "messages" that don't really tell you anything. "connection failed" - I want to know why!!!!
Here is my method for solving connection errors:
a) Is a ping of the database server successful? If not, then you won't be able to connect to the database. Fix this problem.
b) Is a tnsping of the database successful? If not, then you won't be able to connect to the database. Make sure Listener is up on database server and you have the correct entry in tnsnames.ora
c) Is a SQL*Plus connection to the database successful? (This is always the first thing I try.)
If not, then verify that the connect string you are giving to SQL*Plus is indeed in the tnsnames.ora file. Is the tnsnames.ora file that you think you are using the one that is actually being used? Oracle will try to use a tnsnames.ora in your local directory, one in the directory pointed to by the TNS_ADMIN environment variable, or one in the ORACLE_HOME corresponding to the version of SQL*Plus you are using. If the message says "cannot find host" or something like that see a) and b) above.
d) If a) and b) work, but c) does not, then turn on Network tracing to pinpoint the error.
e) If you can connect via SQL*Plus but not via another application then the fault lies in the other application, not in the Oracle software. Correct the other application.
In short - first thing to try - can your colleague connect with SQL*Plus?

  • Need a power shell command for Front End fail over?

We have a Lync 2013 infrastructure with 2 front ends and 2 edges.
The environment was setup by a partner and the servers were configured for failover in case one goes down in the pool.
However the last time windows updates were applied and the primary FE had to be restarted, the secondary FE did not automatically switch over as the active server and it caused a companywide outage.
In speaking with the contractor, they said that well no it would not automatically do this, you need to run a Lync PowerShell to have it switch over.
My BS radar went off, but I wanted to ask you if this sounds right or is possible.
If it must be done, could you give me the power shell command.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Did you solve the issue with the help of the people above provided?
If you use a Lync server Enterprise edition, it is recommended to deploy at least three FE servers.
If you use two Lync server Standard edition for DR,
when one of the servers fails in the Pool Pair, the administrator need to manually failover the pool to the other member of the Pool Pair using the
    command: Invoke-CsPoolFailover -PoolFQDN <Pool1 FQDN> -DisasterMode -Verbose
The Automatic failover and failback for
Voice option and the associated time intervals in Topology Builder apply only to the voice resiliency features that were introduced in Lync Server 2010. Selecting this option does not imply that the pool failover discussed in this document is automatic.
Pool failover and failback always require an administrator to manually invoke the failover and failback.
You can refer to the link below about how to failover a pool:

Does it help, yes and no.  FYI, we are running Enterprise Edition front ends for our single pool.  The new environment was setup as a proof of concept and we installed the bare minimum # of servers at the time.
The articles suggested from above pretty much just say if one of your FE's goes down, bring it back up as soon as possible.  Both of our FE's need windows updates applied ASAP and it could an hour or more (likely).  Here is a quote from the article:
If for some reason you need to bring both servers down at the same time, do the following when the downtime for the pool is finished:
The best practice is to restart both Front End Servers at the same time.
If the two servers cannot be restarted at the same time, you should bring them back up in the reverse order of the order they went down.
If you cannot bring them back up in that order, then use the following cmdlet before bringing the pool back up:
    Reset-CsPoolRegistrarState -ResetType QuorumLossRecovery -PoolFQDN <FQDN>
The last time the main FE went down for service, we left the secondary FE on but there was still an outage.  Then brought back the formerly active FE fist and service was restored.  Basically I need to know how to switch the passive to the active
node before/while the primary is offline.  And if required once both FE's are back up, to switch the service from the secondary that became active, back to the primary server as it was before.  Make sense?  Perhaps I'm still missing something
after reading the articles.  The powershell commands list just updating the topology after both servers come back online.

  • SChannel Errors on Front Ends Affecting Client Connectivity Between Pools

We have an SE pool in Asia.  A user tried attending a conferencing hosted on the US EE pool but received an error.  Looking in the logs I see the following error (30988) in the Lync events on the Asia server:
Sending HTTP request failed. Server functionality will be affected if messages are failing consistently.
Sending the message to https://uslyncpool.company.loc:444/LiveServer/Focus failed. IP Address is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. Error code is 2EFE. Content-Type is application/delegateAuthz+xml.
    Http Error Code is 0.
Cause: Network connectivity issues or an incorrectly configured certificate on the destination server. Check the eventlog description for more information.
    Resolution:
Check the destination server to see that it is listening on the same URI and it has certificate configured for MTLS. Other reasons might be network connectivity issues between the two servers.
    Followed by the warning (32052):
An HTTP application request sent to a Service timed-out. Requests will be retried but if this error continues to occur functionality will be affected.
    Url: https://uslyncpool.company.loc:444/LiveServer/Focus
Cause: Network related error or destination service being non-functional.
    Resolution:
Ensure that the Service is provisioned and functioning correctly. If any network related errors are reported by the Service ensure that they are resolved.
On one of the US servers (we will call it serverB) I see this Lync event (14428) around 25 seconds later:
    TLS outgoing connection failures.
Over the past 28 minutes, Lync Server has experienced TLS outgoing connection failures 2 time(s). The error code of the last failure is 0x80090322 (The target principal name is incorrect.) while trying to connect to the server "serverA.company.loc"
at address [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5061], and the display name in the peer certificate is "Unavailable".
Cause: Most often a problem with the peer certificate or perhaps the DNS A record used to reach the peer server. Target principal name is incorrect means that the peer certificate does not contain the name that the local server used to connect. Certificate
root not trusted error means that the peer certificate was issued by a remote CA that is not trusted by the local machine.
    Resolution:
Check that the address and port matches the FQDN used to connect, and that the peer certificate contains this FQDN somewhere in its subject or SAN fields. If the FQDN refers to a DNS load balanced pool then check that all addresses returned by DNS refer
to a server in the same pool. For untrusted root errors, ensure that the remote CA certificate chain is installed locally. If you have already installed the remote CA certificate chain, then try rebooting the local machine.
We are also seeing the following SChannel (36884) error on our servers (but not at the same time as the errors above):
The certificate received from the remote server does not contain the expected name. It is therefore not possible to determine whether we are connecting to the correct server. The server name we were expecting is serverA.company.loc. The SSL connection
request has failed. The attached data contains the server certificate.
We are seeing this periodically and from other locations.
What is odd is serverA seems to expect to find its name in serverB's certificate.  This is a two server EE pool and I have never seen that requirement.  We have the pool name and each server name in the SANs along with all the other typical names
(sip, lyncdiscover, etc.) on both servers but I have never seen anything state that the FQDNs of all machines in the pool need to be in the certificate on every server.  I fact, the wizard doesn't even do it.
    Am I wrong on that?
Lync Server 2010 CU7, hardware load balanced

You need to install each other’s Root Certificate in local computer’s Trusted Certification Authorities store. Delete the duplicated certificates in personal store on server in both Asia and US.
Check if you can ping FQDN uslyncpool.company.loc from server in Asia.

  • Lync front end connectivity test fails (SSL certificate / URL problem)

We have a weird problem in our installation where Lync keeps complaining about connectivity issues to external reach proxy on our front end server.
The event log error codes are 41024 and 41026.
Here's the error from the snooper utility:
    TL_ERROR(TF_COMPONENT) [0]1A14.0EE4::12/12/2014-10:31:30.901.0000000d (DataMCURunTime,DataProxies.ProcessResponse:1197.idx(601))
(0000000001595A27)Failed poking Proxy error=[The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel.], type=[ExternalReachProxy], url=[https://dunords36.du.local:4443/Reach/DataCollaborationRelayWebService.svc]
The problem is that it makes the test with the INTERNAL FQDN (dunords36.du.local) and thus the SSL trust fails as the certificate is for our EXTERNAL FQDN on the front end server! I have verified this by testing the above URL with the external address and
the internal one. With the external one the certificate is OK.
If you're wondering; we do not use a reverse proxy. Instead we just have the firewall change the port and forward the traffic to our front end server. Our lync setup is a NAT'ed setup.
I know about the security risks so this is not what the discussion is about.
I can't find anywhere where i can change the above behaviour and tell lync to make the test on the correct, external FQDN. The settings in the topology builder all seems to be OK. And as you can see it does make the test on port 4443 which in our topology
builder is configured for our external FQDN.

    Hi,
Would you please elaborate your Lync Server environment (Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition)?
Please double check if you enter the correct external base URL on Lync Topology.
Please also check if the SAN of FE Server certificate correctly.

  • SQL Server 2005 replaced with SQL Server 2014 trying to connect front end Access as guest (read only ODBC)

We have replaced a SQL Server 2005 with a SQL Server 2014 (new physical server.)  Have the new server set up to use SQL Server login OR Windows user login. Had old server connecting (for a particular DB) to front end Access (2010 or 2013) as guest for
anyone logged into the Windows NT Network with a read only ODBC connection. Have the DB in the new server set to include guest as db_datareader (with only SELECT permission for the securables of each table and view being linked) but when any Windows user not
specifically listed as a SQL DB user tries to use the front end they get an error of:
    Microsoft SQL Server Login
    Connection failed:
    SQL State: '28000'
    SQL Server Error: 18456
[Microsoft][OCBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] Login failed for user {domain\user}.
After closing that pop-up window a server login window appears. Of course, since the guest user is not specifically listed as a user in the DB that fails also. It seems like there should be a very simple solution to this, but I can't seem to find it. I want
to allow anyone logged in on the Windows system (locally) to be able to open the MS Access file (on their work station machine) and run their own (read only; select) queries on the SQL Server database. Any suggestions?
Thanks a billion in advance ----

Thanks for the response Olaf. I have now spent weeks researching this. I realize that using the guest account in most situations is not advised. As mentioned, I have restricted the guest account to allow the db_datareader role only, and have explicitly denied
all other roles, as well as allowing select only, and still have no access for the guest account.
The suggested fix in the second link you provided, of using Windows groups is not plausible for my situation either. We are a scientific field research institution, with a few long term users and lots of users that may have Windows accounts for a few months,
and then they are gone. It would be a nightmare for the network tech to try to keep a group account up to date, and we need to give access (read only, of course) to anyone logged into the system. Realize that the ONLY access of any kind to this database is
thru MS Access ACCDB, using a (by default) read only OCDB connection.
This type of access is used particularly because researchers need to be able to set up their own queries, and the MS Access query interface is particularly convenient for people who are not themselves SQL experts, yet are trying to get some very advanced
levels of output. Putting the database online is not practical because then we are back to the need for a comprehensive query interface, and just picking up general subsets of the data online (from a basic web page search feature) would be out of the question,
since the result set would involve hundreds of thousands if not millions of records.
So - that said - what exactly would you suggest, assuming we don't have the funds to buy a whole new system, and have spent plenty of money with Microsoft's Enterprise level MS Office so that all work stations have MS Access, and Microsoft's SQL Server,
as well as running our network on Microsoft's network software.

  • ERROR 14614 on Front End when testing with Remote Connectivity Analyzer

    Hello forum
Does the Lync Remote Connectivity Analyzer not support 128 encryption?
Reason im asking is the following:
When I test my Lync edge server. I get the following error on the RCA result page:  RegisterException.
After this error on the RCA, the event 14614 is logged on my Standard Edition Front end server.
    INFO:
User authentication with NTLM protocol failed with error SEC_E_UNSUPPORTED_FUNCTION. This indicates a potential mismatch between security policy settings on the client and server computers.
Cause: This error can occur if the settings in "Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients" policy on the client computer are not the same as the settings in the "Network security: Minimum
session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers" policy on this server.  By default, the "Require 128-bit encryption" setting is disabled for computers running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003,
Windows 2000 Server, or Windows XP. For computers running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, this setting enabled by default.
    Resolution:
Ensure that the "Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients" policy settings on the computers from which users log on are the same as "Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based
(including secure RPC) servers" policy settings on this server.
All of our Lync servers are running on Windows 2012 R2. So why this error from the RCA?

Please check your settings on the client and on the server.
I know, this is a old blog info, but it discribed the problem.

Thanks for the answer, but in this case the "Client" is the Remote Connectivity Analyzer. So my question was, why is it not working with that? Does the RCA not support 128 bit?

  • Front End pool failed over

    Hi all,
    1. I setup a pool with three Front End servers (FQDN of pool is pool.site1.sip96x2.com and it's pointed to IP address of three Front End servers). Everything works fine. But When I disable network interface on FE1 and FE2, the Lync clients are disconnected.
I haven't understood clearly how the Lync clients failed over in a pool? Please clarify to me.
    2. I have two central site (Root site and Primary site, they have different domain sip96x2.com and site1.sip96x2.com). The simple URL dialin is pointed to Front End server at Root site. So if the link between Root site and Primary site is down, how can the
users at Primary site connect to dialin URL?
    3. In building topology for Front End pool, I checked Override FQDN internal web service and the FQDN is "poolint.site1.sip96x2.com". I created three A records "poolint.site1.sip96x2.com" and pointed to three IP addresses of Front End
    servers. Is it right?
    Thanks so much!

Ah ok, well first thing if I am reading this correctly, pool pairing Standard with Enterprise is not supported. You should only pair Standard with Standard and Enterprise with Enterprise (even though topology builder won't stop you) Take a look here for
    support scenarios http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204697.aspx
To deal with the simple URLs in the event of failover you need to add them using Powershell. Take a look at this article which explains and gives an example: http://blogs.perficient.com/microsoft/2012/01/configuring-simple-urls-for-multiple-lync-pools/

  • How Front End pool deals with fail over to keep user state?

Hello to all, I searched a lot of articles to understand how Lync 2010 keeps user state if a fail happens in a Front Pool node, but didn't find anything clear.
I found a MS info. about ths topic : " The Front End Servers maintain transient information—such as logged-on state and control information for an IM, Web, or audio/video (A/V) conference—only for the duration of a user’s session.
    This configuration
is an advantage because in the event of a Front End Server failure, the clients connected to that server can quickly reconnect to another Front End Server that belongs to the same Front End pool. "
As I read, the client uses DNS to reconnect to another Front End in the pool. When it reconnects to an available server, does he lose what he/she was doing at Lync client? Can the server that is now hosting his section recover all
"user's session data"? Is positive, how?
       Regards, EEOC.

The presence information and other dynamic user data is stored in the RTCDYN database on the backend SQL database in a 2010 pool:
http://blog.insidelync.com/2011/04/the-lync-server-databases/  If you fail over to another pool member, this pool member has access to the same data.

The installation of SAP Front-End components failed with 95 errors.
This 7.20 version used to run on this operating system fine. I reinstalled the OS, and now I got this.

Did you install the JSDK (java) afterwards. As you must be aware Java is a pre-requisite for the SAP Frontend.
Also make sure you have set the environment variables after installing java.

  • Named Pipes provider, error:40 could not open a connection to sql server. Only happens on one of the front end SRS servers

when testing a datasource connection I get the following error.
Named Pipes provider, error:40 could not open a connection to sql server.
I've read all the posts on this and nothing works.  This is a scale out deployment and the connection
works from the other server I have setup with SRS that is connected to the same backend SRS databases.  It just doesn't work from one of the SRS front ends.  I'm at a loss..  please help

Enable both named pipe and TCP communications.
Make sure client is using the same (named) pipe name as server for connection.
