Front end options with Oracle DB

I have a customer who needs a highly reliable, highly available oracle database. From the DB point of view this is easy, but in the past we've used oracle Forms to give access to the DB to the users. Unfortunately, due to its web-deployed nature, 9iAS via Oracle Forms is nether reliable nor available, not all of that has to do with forms for example:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Too many dependencies on technologies that require frequent re-boots. So I'm looking for suggestions on what I should use for a front end... Should I write the front end in JAVA, or use htmldb, or some other technology? Any suggestions?

Are you opposed to three-tier deployment altogether? There is always going to be the possibility that IE crashes, particularly as you add functionality on top of straight HTML forms. Are IE crashes really frequent enough to be a cause for concern in your environment? I'd think that having the application save periodically would be more than enough insurance to risk the occasional browser crash.
If you are entering truly critical data and cannot survive the loss of any typing, I would think that system crashes (blue screens) would also be a concern, which would tend to eliinate any application components on the client machines and dictate a client/server app deployed to a bank of Citrix servers that clients connect to from their client desktops. That seems like a lot of effort, however, when web deployment will handle 99.9% of applications out there.

Front end printing with control technology problem with Mac platforms

Hello,
We are looking into replacing Host Spool Access method "F: Printing on front end computer" with the newer "front end printing with control technology" but are running into an issue. Our Mac platforms cannot print duplex nor print multiple pages per side using the new technology. We have followed SAP's recommendation to use the POST2 device type but it still won't allow full printing functionality. Has anyone run into this and if so how did you overcome it?

In the Mac SAPgui, go to the Preferences window and select Printing (i.e. Preferences -> Desktop -> Printing).
In the "Media sides" pull-down menu, select one of the "two-sided" choices (such as "two-sided-long-edge").
Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the window (near the right hand side.
Print to a Front end printer.
I haven't figured out how to get n-up printing.

Can anyone elaborate on the new "Front-end printing with control technology" that was released with FEP 15, OSS Note # 821519? Is this something I should be pushing Basis to implement?

OBIEE 11g Front End Calculations with Presentation Variables Error

Hi Guru's,
Long time user first time poster to the forums but hopefully you can help.
I have a requirement to perform an aggregation on certain fields with a dynamic grouping requirement (so users can select which grouping they require ie, sum profit by [outlets or companies or region]).
The approach I am using is a prompt setting a presentation variable with the possible groupings for the calculation as choices, and a column in the report with a formula to SUM("table"."column" by "@{variable}{default}") this also contains a dynamic column name containing the presentation variable too.
Where the column could be profit and the variable prompt options could be outlet, company or region (from the above example).
This is currently separate from the RPD due to the dynamic nature required with groupings changing at run time and is done in the front end.
However on selecting some columns via the prompt I receive this error:
Error Codes: OPR4ONWY:U9IM8TAC:OI2DL65P
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 43113] Message returned from OBIS. [nQSError: 22027] Union of non-compatible types. (HY000)
This only occurs on some field groupings, and is not a certain type in particular. (Including both short date, short time and varchars).
Any ideas where this problem could stem from?

2 Front End Servers with reporting enabled in topology but only one server shows reports

Hi,
We have 2 Front End Standard pool servers with resiliency enabled between them. The monitoring service is configured in the topology so that both Front End Servers point to the same monitoring database. We have half our users homed on 1 Front
end and half the other users sitting on the other Front End. In the Reports we can only see information on Audio calls made from users that are sitting on our Primary Front End Pool Server however we cannot see call information from users that are sitting
on the other front end server?

We have applied the backend updates and verified the config by running Test-CSDatabases cmd-let . I ran enable-cstopology and ran bootstrapper.exe and rebooted both Front End Servers, however we are still unable to see monitoring data of users
homed on our second Lync Front End server.
Any other suggestions? Thanks for responses so far, appreciate the assistance!

Java Front-end problems with Windows 200 Pro

Hi,
I have some problem on my pc with java applications front-end. I have windows 2000 Professional and use java(TM) 2 SDK, Standard Edition Version 1.3.1
Using every java applications (also development environment as JBuilder 4 Professional and Together 4) I have always problems with front-end: the text is bad visualized everytime I use the scroolbar, menu items into a menu are bad visualized while I drag over of them the mouse and so on...
To try to solve this my problem I have just installed Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000 Pro but I have not had good results - I keep to have the usual problem.
I'm aware that it is difficult to reproduce and however if anyone has some idea to solve my problem I am opened to every suggestion.

the text says that what technolody that they are using its called "Off Screen Images" once i used them in my applications to improve the prefomance.
What they says is to improve the time it takes to display componants that display text on them (Such as buttons, Labels...) they going to create an Off Screen Image of the text and then paste that image on to the screen whenever the componant has to be displayed/Re displayed instead of redrowing (Re rendering) the text on the screen repeatedly which take more time and processing power than rendering once and paste it to screen whenever needed but this solution will take some more memory.

Front - end print with new access method G - having issues for some users

Recently we have implemented the new access method G for front-end printing. it is working fine for 90% users in our company. but some users having problems in printing to WINDEFAULT using this new method.

Usually this means, that some necessary controls are not properly registered in the registry and hence can't be found. You may solve that by removing the SAPGUI from the PC completely, booting the machine and reinstall the GUI.

Front minimize option with no maxmize?

Platform is Labview 5.1.1 on Win9x. Is there a way to let a front panel
window only have its minimize button enabled in the upper right corner of
the window?
The idea is to have a front panel window that can be minimized but not
maximized or resized (window has a maximum pixel size say 300 x 180). The
VI setup options either let me turn resizing (including minimizing)
completely off or completely on (which includes maximizing and letting the
user grab and stretch a front panel edge.)

Dont know if this will suit your needs but you can remove the border
so there is nothing to grab and resize.
Not sure if you can minimize in this situation though.

Prformance Pack and Diagnostic Pack Options with Oracle EE 10g, 11g

For advance performance tuning Oracle supplies performance pack and diagnostic pack. which costs thousands of $$$.
Is there a programmatic or system oriented way or a table in database that would tell me whether a particular site has this option installed in their Oracle EE installation or not?

Support options with Oracle database

My organization purchased Oracle 11g and a support contract for a medium sized project. We have plans to use OracleXE for a couple small (2 - 4) user applications. Will we be able to get support on the OracleXE projects? On the Oracle site I didn't see any support areas for OracleXE to indicate that tech support was available for it.

Ms-access XP front-end and oracle ODBC driver

Hi all,
I need to set up 5 workstations with ms-access front end accessing an oracle database through Oracle ODBC 9.2.0.5.0 driver and linked tables.
My main concern is to learn about any issues that may limit what can and can�t be done through access as opposed to an oracle client. I found out that the maximum size of an access XP database is 2GB, but I have not found accurate information as to the maximum number of records ms-access can handle per table. This would be of critical importance to me because the tables I'm working with may eventually hold up to hundreds of thousands of records.
Concurrency control is also an important topic since 2 or more of the clients may at some point read or write information on the same tables.
Answers to these questions and any other issues of special importance would be greatly appreciated.

ADF 3-tiered with Swing front-end is it possible?

I'm beginning to use Oracle ADF and JDeveloper 10.1.3.
My intention is to develop a 3-tiered application. In the persistence tier an Oracle database will be used, in the business tier I would like to use Oracle ADF, and in the front-end Swing with screens for edit and querying data. The Swing front-end will not have direct access to the database, and in the future the business tier could be used by a Web front-end with Servlets and JSPs.
Which benefits I can get with Oracle ADF for this type of application?
What ADF components can be used in the business tier?
How can it deliver and receive data from the Swing front-end (EJB, Web Service, another approach)?
Somebody knows some tutorial about ADF/Swing applications?

I've been working on a soon-to-go-production 3-tier ADF Swing project for a while.
I would say it is possible but not easy. A lot of effort in my project has gone into workarounds for various things that do not work as expected (and not as in 2-tier mode), refresh-issues, deployment issues and other. We have found workarounds for most of them and JDev 10.1.3 is a lot better for ADF Swing then earlier releases.
Scalability is still an unsolved issue for us as a lot of functionality you'd expect in a rich gui is lost when using "batch mode" which probably scales better then "immediate".

How to pack a front end app to the application that is going to publish

I want to pack the front end application along with the application that I am going to post on the mobile server. Can anyone help me out in executing this phase.
I have made an application with some base tables and posted them to mobile server and able to sync with clinet machine and mobile server. Now I am able to access client database with MSQL and there is a front end application with us and now we want that front end application to be packed with that application that we are going to publish on the mobile server.

You have two options,
1) Create an application on mobile server and attach your front-end files to that application. Upon synchronization the client machine will download the front-end files. Section 6.1.3 Listing Application Files in Developer's guide For OLite version 10.3.0.2.0
2) Use the Oracle Lite framework used for keeping the olite client software up-to-date on the mobile device. Follow inistructions in Metalink Note ID: 350993.1

Front end and back end questions

If I want to develop a web base SOA application by using Jcaps, I have several question want to ask.
1.) In the front end, if i create the page by using eVision to create the page
flow and the page layout, how can I match the fields of the page (such
as the username, email, tel no... with the back end web services?
2.) Does the flow of the front end web pages are control by the page flow in
eVision? When will the eVision supported AJAX or JSF?
3.) What is the use of the eInsight Business process manager, does it
control all the back end flow, such as the flow of each web services?
Does Jcaps has the Bpel engine to control the flow of web services?
4.) I know that in JBoss, there is a jBPM server to control the flow of the front
end pages, does JCAPS has this kind of server?
5.) If i want to connect to the Database? I know that there is a eTL to extract
the data from the database, it is true? Or do u recommend to connect the
database directly through the web services by using JDBC or other
framework as well?
6.) If I have an existing application that is developed by .Net (With no web
services). How can i integrate with other systems? What can I do in order
to reuse the system? Or what Jcaps can do in this manner?

Generally, back-end would consist of the taks associated with configuration of data targets (ODS, Cubes), working with extractors, mapping data to the data targets, writing transfer/start rtn/update rules, and creating Infopkgs/ Process Chains.
Front-end deals with the use of the BW - writing queries, workbooks, web (although I think some of the infrastructure aspects of web reporting. e.g. javascript/templates might really could be considered backend). Think of Front-end as all of the client/customer/user facing components.
