Fsck on 250Gb filesystem aborts (coredump)

Hello,
I had a SVM raid1 on 2 250Gb hard drives.
Upon trying to restore from them, I may have compromised the integrity of the UFS.
My latest attempt consists in a one-way setup:
$> metadb -i
  flags   first blk block count
a m  pc luo      16    8192    /dev/dsk/c5d1s2
a    pc luo      16    8192    /dev/dsk/c1d1s2
$> metastat -i
gamma: Mirror
    Submirror 0: alpha
      State: Okay
    Pass: 1
    Read option: roundrobin (default)
    Write option: parallel (default)
    Size: 488327805 blocks (232 GB)
alpha: Submirror of gamma
    State: Okay
    Size: 488327805 blocks (232 GB)
    Stripe 0:
Device   Start Block  Dbase        State Reloc Hot Spare
  c1d1s2      16065     Yes           Okay   Yes
Device Relocation Information:
Device   Reloc  Device ID
c1d1   Yes    id1,cmdk@AST3250410AS=____________9RY0BKEX
$> fstyp /dev/md/dsk/gamma
ufsHowever it would not mount:
$> mount -F ufs /dev/md/dsk/gamma /back
mount: The state of /dev/md/dsk/gamma is not okay
and it was attempted to be mounted read/write
mount: Please run fsck and try againAt which point I try to run fsck.
In manual mode, it seems it will never end (and never does, I ctrl^c)
In preen mode, it recommends to run in manual mode.
In yes sir mode, it runs for a long time, clears corrects slashes and dices, but terminates on a coredump.
I don't know what is the best course of action at that point?
The data seems to be on the disk (using strings, I recognize all the filenames)
Is it possible to extract a small section of the 232Gb and run fsck manually on that?
Is there some documentation for fsdb?
Thanks for all your suggestions,
Matthieu

There are probably on the order of 5000 files on there.
There is no output in /var/adm/messages, and the console output looks like (after about 2hrs):

fsck: warning: the following command (process 2184) was terminated by signal 11 and dumped core
fsck -F ufs -y -o b=32 /dev/md/dsk/gamma(I've tried with other superblocks and its the same result)
I have actually a pretty good idea of whats on the disk: I backed up music using cddawav, so the directory structure is
/Media/Music/{author_album}/audio_XX.{wav,txt}
I have never used fsdb, so I will heed your advice.
I am thinking of perhaps using a tool like foremost...
Although I am curious to discover what could have gone wrong.

  • Fsck problem Diagnosis: Systemd dropping to emergency console

Title says it all. I have no idea why.
First, it said fsck was unable and I had to enter fsck /dev/sdaX manually. Then emergency console dropped on me.
The thing is that if I continue without giving the password thus entering to console, computer loads just fine.
Probably problems are quoted from the next complete journal are as follows:

It was already hooked, however, I moved it from the last line to this: `HOOKS="colors base udev autodetect fsck modconf block filesystems keyboard"`
Not a change. It, I guess only works on the root partition.
I just ran a `fsck /dev/sdaX` from the emergency console after unmounting it. Problem is solved but the bug is, I guess is still there.
    Thank you anyway.

  • Error I get at boot with filesystems check process.

Ok this is a fresh install on a brand new pc. I d/l the 0.6 beta iso since the system doesn't have a floppy drive and since the new kernel name change ftp install of the .5 iso won't work. Anyways after install of just base packages I get this odd message when it hits the "Checking Filesystems" section of the boot. This happens right after it mounts rot as read only.
    Exaqct message is:
fsck: cannot check /dec/discs/disc0/part4: fsck.reiserfs not found..
I have tried uninstalling reiserfsprogs package and reinstalling it but that still doesn't fix the issue. I am not quite sure what the issue is. This is the first time I have ever come across this issue. Any help or advice twards fixing this would be great..

If you set up your fstab to check filesystems on boot (the last parameter in a line in fstab) then fsck is called during boot. fsck then calls the appropriate fsck for the filesystem fsck.[your-filesystem], in your case that is fsck.reiserfs. I don't know why but the program in reiserfsprogs is named reiserfsck (at least in arch linux), that's why fsck cannot find it.
You could create a symlink to reiserfsck called fsck.reiserfs, but I am not sure if these are really the same programs with just different names or they really differ. If someone knows more, please explain, I'm also interested in this.

  • Something about "filesystems is NOT Clean"

I bought Thinkpad X1 recently.  I install arch on it. Everything seems fine, except that "filesystems is NOT Clean" appears everytime when I start the laptop. I cannot find useful information from google. I just guess that it is a problem associated with unnormal shutdown procedure.
    Any suggestions are welcome!

I just guess that it is a problem associated with unnormal shutdown procedure.
Well... if my guess is correct, then there are other reasons you may see that message.
Most Linux filesystems have a maximum mount count and/or a maximum date interval configured inside them. When you exceed the maximum(s), they'll start complaining; trying to tell us humans that we should run fsck on the filesystem.
If you want to display the maximums on that ext4 filesystem, then run tune2fs -l /dev/sdXY with root authority, where "X" and "Y" match the filesystem in question. Look for Maximum mount count: and Check interval:. You can use that same tune2fs command to change those values, but read the man page first.
Since I've never run a reiser filesystem, I don't know how to display it's values, but if you look at the "-c" and "-m" parameters in the reiserfstune man page, it will show you how to change those maximums.
Now... since most filesystems don't like to be fsck'd while mounted (at least in read/write mode), I'd highly suggest that you become familiar with "The sixth field" portion of the fstab man page. If you set your fstab file correctly, it will "Do The Right Thing" when it comes time to scan your filesystems during a boot.
    (Edited to add:)
Oh...forgot to mention... those kernel logs entries are from your Intel wireless adapter device driver, not your filesystems

  • [SOLVED] is the fsck hook needed if the systemd hook is present?

Hiya. The Wiki isn't really clear about this. There are some instructions about building a systemd based init image here, but nothing about fsck.
On the silent boot page there is a entry about fsck , more specifically letting systemd check the filesystem instead of the fsck hook, which involves copying configuration files.
I understand both entries, but after migrating my init image to systemd, I keep getting systemd-fsck messages on boot, and now I have a couple of questions:
Is my disk being fscked twice?
Is the fsck hook needed anymore? What would happen if I remove it?
If I want to turn off the output, can I follow the instructions on the Wiki?
What is the general recommended approach with systemd and fsck?
I skimmed through this thread, but I must say I didn't become any more educated on this topic.
    Thanks.

I just had a quick look on how these things fit together. Short answer: If you want the root filesystem to be checked in the initrd (and therefore before mount) you do need the fsck hook.
    Long answer:
systemd-fsck just uses fsck.* to check the disks (see source code line 288ff.). If it does not exist, systemd-fsck just quits. The reason for this is clear: fsck tools are made by filesystem developers, not by systemd developers.
The fsck hook is the only one that installs these binaries (fsck.*) into the initrd (see grep -r 'fsck\.' /usr/lib/initcpio). That means: No fsck hook --> no filesystem check in the initrd.
    Now to your questions:
DoctorJellyface wrote:Is my disk being fscked twice?
No. The root filesystem is checked in the initrd if the appropriate fsck.* tool is available. All other filesystems are checked after leaving the initrd.
DoctorJellyface wrote:Is the fsck hook needed anymore? What would happen if I remove it?
It is needed if you want the root filesystem to be checked in the initrd and therefore before being mounted. If you remove it it might be checked after leaving the initrd while being mounted read-only. But I did not test that and don't know if Arch actually does it this way. You may quickly test this yourself.
DoctorJellyface wrote:If I want to turn off the output, can I follow the instructions on the Wiki?
If you use systemd in the initrd you would probably have to edit the files directly in /usr/lib/systemd/system, because mkinitcpio copies the files from there. They will be overwritten on every systemd update so that is not a very nice approach. For all output after leaving the initrd you should be able to follow the steps in the wiki (copy to /etc...)
DoctorJellyface wrote:What is the general recommended approach with systemd and fsck?
My recommendation would be: Keep the fsck hook, because it is the only way to check the filesystem before actually mounting it. It works nicely with the systemd hook.

You can check if the 'files' file has the files that are causing errors, e.g.
    [karol@black ~]$ grep "usr/lib/httpd/modules/mod_dontdothat.so" $(find /var/lib/pacman/local -name "subversion-*")/files

I've noticed all of the errors concern files from /usr. Do you have some special setup, like a separate /usr partition?

  • Need to run fsck on UCS Central VM -- how?

We had a storage disruption event recently that appears to have flipped the root volume on our UCS Central VM to read-only. After rebooting the VM, I get an error message about needing to run a manual fsck due to filesystem errors on /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 (see attached screenshot), and I get dropped into a shell prompting for the root password. I can't seem to find any root credentials in the UCS documentation. Is there a procedure for repairing the filesystem and repairing the VM?

    Brad,
You'll need to open a TAC case.  We don't provide root/shell access to the VM externally.
    Regards,
    Robert

  • [SOLVED]fsck hook with new mkinitcpio.conf

Last night when I upgraded mkinitcpio it provided a new mkinitcpio.conf file as a pacnew. When comparing this new file to my previous config file the only difference I found was that the new one included the fsck hook. From what I've read it says that this hook is strongly recommended but only gives a reason for it if you have a separate /usr partition, which I do not. I have separate /boot, /swap, /, and /home partitions. Should I include this hook? Does it hurt? Doesn't matter?

    karol wrote:
You should have checked the wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio#HOOKS too:
Adds the fsck binary and filesystem specific helpers. If added after the autodetect hook, only the helper specific to your root filesystem will be added. Usage of this hook is strongly recommended, and it is required with a separate /usr partition.
I did check the wiki. I mentioned what I had gathered from my reading in my original post, perhaps you should have read it. I then went on to explain that this didn't give much indication for including the fsck hook without a separate /usr partition. So I came here (Newbie Corner) to ask if someone could help me with my understanding, which Gcool was so kind enough to do.

  • Error filesystem Inode has EXTENTS_FL flag set... [SOLVED]

    archlinux i686
    ext3 partition  /dev/sda2/   system loaded at  '/'
the system has worked with the machine for ~ 1 year.  at 'Checking Filesystems', there is a spontaneous error that is first time at this machine/system and it is new to me.
Inode 77077 has EXTENTS_FL flag set on filesystem without extents support. [FAIL]
system will not load after this filesystem check failed.
I lack skill to repair this problem.  Will someone direct me to any resource?
    thank you

an attempt to resolve the file system errors, loaded a system archlinux from disc to fsck.ext3 the filesystem partition /dev/sda2 that was error.
the fsck.ext3 first found the error at inode 77077 that number was printed at the initial error.  then fsck found more errors, at every error there was a prompt to 'CLEAR' or 'Fix' the error.  When those plurous errors happened, I exited 'control+c' the fsck to automate the repair.
there is a switch (flag)  to fsck '-y' to answer 'yes' to all questions in attempt to repair a filesystem easier.  note, the switch '-v' prints extra description as fsck works.
once those switches were on, the filesystem found ~1000 various errors that were automatically 'CHECK'ed or 'Fix'ed.
I have no list of all the various errors.  For the EXTENTS_FL error, when I queried help, there is few or no definate solutions.   Although I have interested to know causes to the errors, I think the errors are generic enough that the fsck automated is a routine solution.
the machine has another problem to load the basic system 'BIOS', perhaps the older age.  it often beeps at load, pre operative system loader 'grub'.
unfortunately, after the fsck with the restore disc archlinux system that loader is now a problem.  after some forcsive machine off then on, the system may load, then I will report if the fsck worked to resolve an archlinux system that works from the filesystem at internal disc part /dev/sda2

  • Fsck error

    Moin,
    we are facing this problem:
    #fsck -n
    gives following output:
FILESYSTEM IN SUPERBLOCK IS WRONG;FIX n
How can I fix it: ??
    # umount filesystem
    # newfs -N /dev/rdsk/devicename
    # fsck -F ufs -o=block-number /dev/rdsk/device-name
What can I do, if it is the /root, /usr, /var slice??
    Thanks
    Thomas

    boot cdrom -s
fsck /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0 ( this depends on the output of the format command since your c# may be different from a cdrom boot. I have had success fsck'ing a /dev/md/rdsk/d0 and /dev/vx/rdsk/rootvol on systems under DiskSuite & Veritas control for the root slice etc. but it is never wise to fsck a mounted filesystem. fsck'ing from Cd is the safest route when /, /usr or /var is concerned although you could probably umount /var and fsck it from single user.

    I have completed a successful install of WLS6.0sp1 on an HP-UX 11.00

    Hi,
I am trying to install Weblogic 7.01 evaluation copy on HP-UX 11.00.After exporting
DISPLAY variable to my workstation, when I run "./server701_hpux.bin",the extraction
of the files is successful, followed by some warning messages regardingthe fonts
and then the BEA Weblogic startup screen comes up. But it hangs thereforever.
I am attaching the output. If I run "./server..." in text mode i.e.without
exporting DISPLAY variable, although the installation of Weblogic softwareis
successful, but it hangs at "Copying JDK..." i.e. hangs at JDK installation.
I already have JDK installation on my HP-UX system (1.3.1_02).
If someone knows how to solve this problem, please let me know. Also,as I already
have JDK installation on my system, is it possible to disable JDK installation
    in weblogic installation.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi
Our Oracle server v 8.1.7 running on HP-UX11.

And when we tried to use jDriver JVM is dumping core.

    Srikanth,
I suggest that you have a look at DataDirect SequeLink JDBC driver. It has
    been certified with Oracle 8i R1 (8.1.5), R2 (8.1.6) and R3 (8.1.7) on
    HP-UX.

  • Problem with JNI in a Solaris shared library

    Hi,
    I have a problem.
I have used JNI in my .dll on Windows & .so on Solaris . I have also used the same JNI code in a .exe on Windows & an executable on Solaris. 3 out of the above 4 combinations work & 1 doesen't. When I use JNI from a .so on Solaris 8(with/without the J2SE recommended patch), the JVM seems to have some exception & dumps core when I invoke CreateJavaVM(). This is an update to the original message -
I have tried both HotSpot & Server JVMs but still see the
    same behavior. I'm using 1.4 .
I'd like to provide more information to those who can help
me. I have a feeling there might be something wrong in my
CC options. Thus you will find below what my CC statement
looks like for one of the files in my project & for the
linking of the final shared library. I also have
provided the output of ldd on my shared library libaicd.so
& for comparison the output of ldd on libjvm.so as that
might provide some usefull information just incase
something looks suspecious & might ring a bell.

  • Time Machine disk read only

    Hello everybody,
I've been using Time Machine ever since Leopard came out and I never had a problem. However, things started to get messy recently.
Leopard keeps telling me that my external drive is read only when I mount it. I googled for a solution, but only found people with the same problem, no real solution.
Disk Utility couldn't repair it, so I repartitioned, formatted and started from scratch. 3 times already. But every time I unmount the drive and remount it, I get the same message telling me that the drive is read only and that I should copy my data somewhere else.
Disk Utility tells me this when running "Verify Disk":
    Verifying volume “Time Machine”
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid key length
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
What can be wrong? I doubt my drive is damaged because it works perfectly after a format. It seems to be a bug in Leopard because so many people are having this problem.
I hope to find a solution this time.
    Thanks!

It is most certainly not a bug. You an verify the drive a million times and you will keep getting the same answer.
    Read Kappy's post.
If running DU and repairing does not work, then you might need DiskWarrior. Most likely your drive is not physically damaged but the file structure is bad. It needs to be repaired.
A safe boot will also run an fsck on your filesystem and might repair it.

  • Disk corruption in Solaris 10 with mirrors

I have had 5 different Sun sparc servers in the past couple of months come up with badly corrupted file systems. I am using They are all mirrored metadisks. One thing I have looked into is using the UFS logging option, but from what I read, it doesn't need to be specified in /etc/vfstab because it is on by default in Solaris 10. Is this true?
Also, is there a problem with shutting down or rebooting the OS with the init commands? Should I be using shutdown instead? Does init 0, 5 or 6 cleanly shutdown the system?
    Thanks

    Hello,
Init 0 is very nice command which is gracefully shutting down all the services in the system including the OS. But the system will be powered on unless you execute powerdown from rsc.
In the case of mirroring metadisks entries can reduce a lot of file system related errors because those entries ("device to fsck") forces the filesystem check in those meta devices in every reboot.
Please have look on vfstab in my test server where i have mirrored disks.
    bash-3.00# more /etc/vfstab
#device device mount FS fsck mount mount
#to mount to fsck point type pass at boot options
