Full-text, extensions

Hello DB XML users,
I've been using BDB XML for a little while and I'm getting on all right with it so far. Mainly, I've used the Python API with my XML web publishing framework[1].
I'm working on some basic computational linguistics projects and was wondering if there are plans for an implementation of the W3C (currently working draft) XQuery Full-text extensions[2]?
One thing that I think it seems to lack is the ability to work well with loosely structured, textual content. However, this perception may be because most tutorials and articles seem to demonstrate the use of essentially tabular, relational data. It seems to me that using a native XML database for this sort of data is quite pointless. Why not just use a relational DBMS?
An implementation of the XQuery Full-text extensions along with related index optimizations would make BDB XML a really useful tool.
I'd also be interested to know if there are any tutorials/examples of extending the DB XML code itself (rather than just using the C++ API in other applications)? And if Sleepycat are interested in other people's extensions to their products?
Cheers

I have been using Berkeley DB XML for (1) dictionary data and (2) supporting databases of quotations illustrating language usage. The two kinds of data are published together in some kinds of dictionaries. Almost all of the data are quite tightly structured, but the actual text of the illustrative quotations can be comparatively long and contain inline markup. Given all the other factors influencing the choice of a database system where I work, I've been happy with DB XML for many of the reasons which must have attracted other DB XML users so I won't repeat all that here, and there are a few basic reasons why I have felt the "but why don't you just use a SQL database" argument isn't strong enough in our particular context for these specific datasets.
Still, I needed to offer users full-text search access, and while I could do this with a bit of legwork, and the performance ranges from very good to acceptable with our datasets, it's not as sophisticated as I'd like it to be. Basically one seems to be tied to substring searching with some help using regexes to simulate word-boundary matches. Possibly one could do word stemming before populating the DB, create a more sophisticated query parser, etc. but I haven't got to trying that (suggestions along similar lines welcome BTW).
The fairly recently-added case-insensitive contains() has been a great help, but I'd just like to chime in with Richard's post and say that support for XQuery Full-text would represent a significant advance in functionality and usability for my organisation. It would mean that, when we come to publish our next dictionary project online (currently this is in progress and the data is visible only to editors), it would be feasible to retain the existing DB XML setup rather than having to move the data to another system supporting more sophisticated full-text searching mopre easily. So I'm glad this is on the roadmap but I admit I am also surprised that so few people using an XML database seem to have been concerned about this question. Or perhaps I just haven't been exposed to enough of other people's data...

    Hello,
Did you check the fulltext log files for more details about the errors. If the filter isn’t working, there should be errors in the error log file.
The following thread is about similar issue, please refer to:

  • Adobe PDF iFilter SQL Server 2008 R2 Full Text not working

Unable to get the SQL Server 2008 R2 to index PDF files for full-text searching.
    Environment: Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise 64-bit, SQL Server 2008 R2 Express SP3 64-bit, Adobe Reader 11.x
Installed PDF iFilter 64 (11.0.01) from
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5542
Added its folder (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 11 for 64-bit platforms\bin\;) to the PC system Path variable. Rebooted PC.
Confirmed SQL Server sees the Adobe PDF iFilter ..... SELECT * from sys.fulltext_document_types where document_type = '.pdf'
Inserted PDF files to my table (see below for CREATE statement).
The SQLFT log says  ... Warning: No appropriate filter was found during full-text index population for table or indexed view '[TestDB].[dbo].[pdfifiltertable]' (table or indexed view ID '2105058535', database ID '7'), full-text key value '1'.
Some columns of the row were not indexed.
Installed other filters for Office. Added files of type DOC, XPS. Confirmed the search query works for those file types. So as such SQL Full-Text is enabled and working.
    Below my T-SQL commands:
    Exec sp_fulltext_service 'load_os_resources', 1
    Exec sp_fulltext_service 'verify_signature', 0
    Exec sp_fulltext_database 'enable'

  • Embedding Full-text Index into PDF File

    Hello Everyone,
I've tried to create and embed full-text index into PDF file, but with no luck. I've followed steps described at http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/Standard/WSC28D4DBB-6A78-4027-9E04-F50FE411CFB9.w. html - there can be seen progress of collecting of data and at the end the button Update index is enabled. This is signal for me that Index was created. After clicking on Ok button, saving document as new one and then reopening "new created" document, there is info that no Index is embedded in the Manage Embedded Index dialog. Is there any other step necessary to do? Or is it bug? Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.1 on Windows Vista 32bit is used.
    Jan
PS: Interesting is also comment at the bottom of above mentioned help page...

Thanks for the response. It is true that if I make changes and look at the embedded index status, it shows that it needs updating
However the problem I can't get around after extensive testing is that sometimes for no apparent reason the index is dropped on save. This can happen if I check the status of the index to make sure it is valid, save the file, and reopen it.
I've concluded that this must be a bug and am using other indexing options for the time being.

  • Problem with Office document structure when exporting in Windows vs full-text indexing in SQL Server

We are creating reports with Crystal Report for .Net. We both have a Windows and a Web application connecting to our database. The problem occurs only with the Windows application. We create a report and in the dialog that appears, we choose to export the report in MS Word format. Everythinglooks fine because after we save the document, MS Word is able to open and display the document. However, when we decide to add this Word document in the database in a table that has a image column bound to a full-text indexing schema, that document is never indexed. After fiddling around for a few hours, we realized that the Word document produced during the export is not a true Word document but rather a RTF document that was given a ".doc" extension. Is there a way to have a real Word document when exporting in Windows. The problem does not arise in Web because when we export, the report is displayed in Internet Explorer through the Office plugin. The Office plugin knows how to same a real Word document.
There is also a problem when exporting to Excel in Windows. It does not yield the same structure as in Web. The format of the export in Windows is not compatible with the Office IFilter of SQL Server 2000/2005, therefore the content is not available for search queries.
Any patches to fix this problem?

  • [iPhone SDK] Full text search in SQLite

I'm trying to implement a search feature on my SQLite-stored data. Basically, the user gives me a list of keywords; I'd like to retrieve records which have all the keywords in at least one of two fields, and which also have a foreign key set to a specific value. As far as I can tell, the iPhone doesn't include SQLite's full-text search extension. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I should implement this feature? My current idea is to simply create a table that maps every word in the record back to the record itself, but that might be a wasteful approach...

I got SQLite working by getting the SQLite source
    (http://sqlite.org/sqlite-amalgamation-360.zip)
    added
    #define SQLITEENABLEFTS3 1
    at the top of sqlite3.c
and added both sqlite3.c and sqlite3.h into the project.
Make sure the standard SQLite framework has been removed.
Build & Go and everything working perfectly with the latest SQLite and Full Text Search built in.
(No idea if compiling and linking is preferential)

  • Full text search on varbinary max field containing RTF

I have a table in sql server 2008 (tblRTF) with the following columns
    ID (numeric) (Primary key)
RTF (Varbinary(max)) (full text search index is created on this one)
Doctype (varchar) (contains the document type which is its extension. In my case it is .rtf)
I am storing RTF files in my 'RTF' field and the string '.rtf' in 'DocType' column. As mentioned, my  fulltext search index is created on 'RTF' field. My problem is - when I write queries using fulltext search for searching for rows, then it returns
me rows even if I provide words that are supposed to be within RTF tags.
Following is an example of my query -
    SELECT *
    FROM tblRTF
    WHERE CONTAINS(RTF, 'rtf1')
The above query ideally should not return me rows because the string 'rtf1' occurs within RTF tags of an rtf and not within the body or text. Yet, when I write the above query, it returns me all the rows from the table
as each RTF will begin with the string - {\rtf1\
Can anyone tell me what wrong am I doing here? The very purpose of fulltext search is defeated if the word is searched for within the tags.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Is a Full Text Index search case sensitive or not in SQL Server 2012?

I setup full text index on my contact table and am attempting to run a search on it using the following query:
    SELECT *
    FROM sysdba.Contact C
    WHERE CONTAINS(C.FirstName, 'Test')
    OR CONTAINS(C.LastName, 'Test')
The problem is it's clearly running a case sensitive search. I did a quick search to find out how to change it to be case in-sensitive and found two pages (both for SQL Server 2012) with conflicting answers:
    1 - MSDN - "Query with Full-Text Search" - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms142583(v=sql.110).aspx
    Case sensitivity
Full-text search queries are case-insensitive. However, in Japanese, there are multiple phonetic orthographies in which the concept of orthographic normalization is akin to case insensitivity (for example, kana = insensitivity). This type of orthographic normalization
    is not supported.
    1 - TechNet - "Full-Text Search (SQL Server)" - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms142571(v=sql.110).aspx
    Full-text queries are
not case-sensitive. For example, searching for "Aluminum" or "aluminum" returns the same results.
Can someone please explain this? Is it possible to do it without it being case sensitive? If yes, how?
(Sorry, I couldn't make those links b/c TechNet hasn't verified my account)
Thank you for your time and help,
    Hanan

Whats the collation setting for the columns? try using a case insensitive collation as below
    SELECT *
    FROM sysdba.Contact C
    WHERE CONTAINS(C.FirstName COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, 'Test')
    OR CONTAINS(C.LastName COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, 'Test')

I am not using Bex here for the reason that the output has more than 1.8 lac records and hence I get an error while using Bex
WHen I try to execute this report using Bex for a small selection I could see full text there.
And there is no text master data maintained for this characteristic.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

    Hi,
As you said you have 1.8 Lac records, There is no point in increasing the size to maximum number possible i.e 65K .
You have following three options to satisfy your requirement.:
    1.    Usage of  web reporting for export of more than 65k rows. According the note: 1127156 - Safety belt: Result set is too large, in BW version 7.x it I possible to set parameters that would allow such a massive export of data.
    2.    Functionality of OpenHubs. Data can be placed directly into the files (e.g. in CSV format) on application server. Be careful here OpenHubs are specially licensed and by using it there are additional fees.
    3.    Coding of custom ABAP report which runs BW query and gets all its output and saves it in the flat files.
Please let me know if this info is helpful.

  • Popup from ALV for displaying full text = problems!!!

    Dear all,
I created an ALV to display data. In this ALV, I have a text column, which just show FIRST 30 characters of the original text.
Now I want to double click on that field, and it will pop up a small window to show full text (the original text, unknown length).
I made lots of references and I decided to use FM POPUP_WITH_TABLE because of some reasons:
    a)  the original text is retrieved from another FM READ_TEXT. After the call of READ_TEXT, the text will be stored into an internal table. Then, it can be passed to POPUP_WITH_TABLE without more modification.
    b) POPUP_WITH_TABLE can show the text more meaningfully. I mean, if the length of the text is greater than the length of the popup window, it <b>automatically break the line and displays the rest in the next line</b>. ( FM POPUP_TO_INFORM does NOT do that.)
However, I've faced some <b>PROBLEMS</b> with FM POPUP_WITH_TABLE
    1) The popup window has 2 button OK and Cancel. <b>Is there any way just to display Cancel button?</b>
    2) If I click on Cancel or OK without choose any line on the popup window => It will raise an exception, called BREAK_OFF. In this case
If the clicked button is CANCEL => it will close the popup
If  the clicked button is OK => nothing happens. And I must click on CANCEL to close the popup.
<b>I want to close the popup windown without raising any exceptions. How can I ?</b>
    3) When I enter many complex selection criteria on Selection Screen to limit the result, displaying ALV is good. But when I click on the text field to popup => the report cannot be manipulated. I have to kill the session in SM04.
<b>What's wrong? </b>(because for single selection criteria, it works well.)
    Every body has any suggestions?
    Thank you in advance

I solved it. I just use another list for pop-up event.
Although it worked well now, I thought it was not a good solution.
    Thank you all of you.
    Best regards.

  • Is there a way to select a document that contains a word not followed by a particular word in full text?

I have a table named Documents that has Content field full text indexed
Now i need to create a query in such a way that the query should return docs that have at least one word "hello" that does not have word "world" following it.
    --sth like
    select content from documents
where contains(Content,N'hello(not followed by word "world")')
    And the result should be
"hello" -- since this does not have world following hello in it"
"hello friend and hello world" -- this document has word hello that is not followed by world it it"
Can a full text query be formulated in a way to achieve above results? If so how?? I want to avoid parsing Content manually as much possible as I can.

    Hi Mokchhya,
According to your description, the issue regards SQL Server Search, I will help you move the question on the related forums, and It is appropriate and more experts will assist you.
In addition, I do a test. If you want to get the results which contains ‘hello’ characters and not contains’ world’ characters. I recommend you use NOT on any boolean expression. For example, if you create full test catalog and full test index. When you
need to find the document records who has “hello” in their content, and does not have “ world” in content, CONTAINS( ) is takes one keyword to match with the records.
    select * from <database>.<schema>.<table>
where contains (Name, 'hello') and not contains (Name, 'world')
    For more information, see:
    http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2008/09/05/sql-server-creating-full-text-catalog-and-index/
if you don’t use full text search, you can use Like with wildcarding to scan a column. For example,
    ;With cte As
    (select * from <database>.<schema>.<table>
    Where name like ‘hello%’
    select * from cte
    where name not like ‘%world’

  • Sql Server 2012:Full Text Catalog taking up all the disk space

We have created full text catalog and index for a pretty large table. The column on which the index is being created has a datatype of varchar(max). The problem started as soon as we started populating the catalog. It almost grew to 835GB and Population
status stuck to "Processing Notification". I think is status code 9 which corresponds with
the "Change tracking" status in the SQL. It gets stuck in this status almost for ever.
Is there a way to deal with this huge catalog size, may be shrink it or move it to a different location.
Is switching off Change Tracking going to improve the situation.
Any help regarding this will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Saikat

    Hello,
There could be considerable amount of indexes on that catalog and the effect of the merge over them. Try the index size property of
    the following function:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms190370(v=sql.110).aspx
    Hope this helps.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition and Full Text Indexing

Hello, we have recently upgraded our web front end server from SQL Server 2005 (Standard Edition) to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition (in conjuction with upgrading our main production servers to SQL 2008 R2 Standard). We have 12 Databases on our production
SQL Server that are replicated to our web frontend server to the SQL Express instance. One of these databases has a FULL TEXT INDEX. The production database is running the Adobe iFilter version 9 64Bit. The FULL TEXT CATALOG has been created and populated
and performs searches as intended. However, upon replication, when using the search option on our web page based on that PDF iFilter, it no longer works. After examining the properties of the FULL TEXT CATALOG, we note that the Catalog size on the subscriber
end is 0MB in size (whereas it is 3MB on the Publication side). Also the Unique Key Count on the subscriber side is '1' whereas on the publisher side it is 30,000+. After examining the FT Indexing logs on the subscriber side shows an error: "Warning: No appropriate
filter was found during full-text index population" On the subscriber side which is running Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition, Adobe Reader 10.1.1 is installed (all 32Bit) with the Adobe iFilter AcroRdIF.dll. When running the SELECT
    * from sys.fulltext_document_types T-Sql statement, the list returned shows the PDF filter to be installed and shows the correct path. Under the System Environment Variables, that path has also been installed (from previous recommendations in researching this
problem). After numerous reboots, service restarts and re-attempts to get the FT Daemon to crawl - no success. Can anyone please help with this problem? Is there something I am missing? In an attempt to work around this problem thinking there might be a version
conflict between the 64Bit version on the publisher and the 32Bit version on the subscriber, I disabled the replication of the FULL TEXT CATALOG and tried to create a new catalog on the subscriber with the same results. Thank you for your answers in advance
    - Fustrated! Sorry, somehow this got posted originally under Server Design

Hello Jeff hope your still out there.  I wrote this question 2 years ago and upgraded to SQL Express with advanced services.  Full Text replication worked until last week.  We are operating in a virtual environment.  My publisher box
is a Windows Server 2008 R2 (64bit) with SQL Server Standard Edition.  My Web front subscriber is a Windows 2003 R2 (32bit) Server with SQL Server 2008 R2 Express SP1 with Advanced Services. Now the exact same thing is happening after 2+ years.
We are looking for possible updates that might have broken this but I am stretching that.  Any clues please?  32bit vs. 64bit?
