Fully upgrade to Mountain Lion from OS 10.5.8?

Did some browsing on the support pages before, but I am not sure how to get the job done without losing all my files and documents.
I am currently using OS 10.5.8 on my Mac Mini.
For what I understand, is that I should upgrade to Snow Leopard first before I can go to Mountain Lion.
Should I do this on a clean harddisk - so put all of my files to an external harddisk (or maybe just make a good backup - how?) or can I just upgrade to Snow Leopard just by buying and downloading it online?
And how to do it then, buy and download Mountain Lion?
Am I missing vital steps here?

I knoooow 80G is not much, but in the beginning it was more than enough. It was only when I got a professional photocamera that it appeared not to be enough anymore. Hence the first extra HD came in.
Now I just recently bought another one to make the backups I apparently need, so there's already two extra HDs on my pretty desktop now. You reccommend I buy another one?
Just joking. I know you mean well, but I'm not a total digilliterate.
I used to make plenty of backups but, really, since my two beautiful babies have arrived, there is simply no time anymore. I am now making it a priority because I NEED to be on the computer again and want it to work properly.
Anyway, since we are having a great conversation going on I'm getting super-dependent of you (and it saves me plenty of time searching the net ), so I have one last question for you, and I hope you will be so kind to answer it as well, please!
So Snow Leopard is running smoothly, as we speak, and I haven't restored any backup (and not planning to, either) but... iPhoto, the one app I used the most, has disappeared.
Do I need to stick in the DVD again to try and find it or is it something I should be buying online now, too?

After starting, Mail answers are very very slow. The same for Note. Instead of, sending mails is only a bit slower than before upgrading.
In Safari, I choose Goggle as starting page in Preferences, but at every restart misses that starting page and the search strip says "Seek Google or instert an address".

I upgraded to mountain lion from snow leopard, now my photo studio software is no longer supported by powerpc. Does anyone know of a fix so my photostudio will work?

I upgraded to mountain lion from snow leopard, but now some of my applications do not work, most specifically I would like to use my photo studio, but now it tells me that powerpc is no longer supported. Does anyone have any fixes to this problem? I would really like to continue to use software that I already have! Thank you for your help!

PPC software will not work in Mountain Lion because there is no longer any Rosetta emulator. You will only be able to run your older software by creating another partition on your hard drive on which you can install Snow Leopard. It need not be a large partition since you can still keep your files and programs on the main partition. You could also install Snow Leopard on an external drive from which to boot the computer.
To resize the drive do the following:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed. (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss. Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
After you create the new partition boot the computer from your Snow Leopard DVD and install Snow Leopard onto the new partition.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

What happens when I upgrade to mountain lion from snow leopard?

I currently have 2 partitions. my mac side and my windows 7 home side.
If i upgrade to mountain lion from snow leopard will i be expected to reinstall bootcamp and windows7 home along with all my other windows programs?
What happens to the partitions? do they stay the same or does the upgrade pretty much do a factory restore and make me start from square one again?
I have a time capsule. but do not really know how to work it like its supposed to. i just really use it to store data that i do not need on my partitions at the current times.

I do not have any knowledge about boorcamp but on my old MacBook with snowleapard,
I was not able to upgrade to Mountain Lion Because of my hardware I think.
And about tha bootcamp partition:
there shouldn't be any problem with upgrading "if even possible" because the Mac partition
can't edit the Windows partition.
I hope this helps you, but I would do some more research befor upgrading instead of completely trusting on my advise.

nope you can go right from SL to ML.

I was in the Apple, Covent Garden store the other day and an assistant said that I could upgrade to Mountain Lion from Leopard for free in one CD. He told me to call a number which I did and the assistant over the phone had no idea about this offer.

You can't. The Mountain Lion upgrade is only free for people who purchased a new Mac on or after July 26 without it installed, and all of the computers which fall into that category shipped with Lion, not Leopard.

I have just sucsessfully installed MS Money on a MacBook Pro using Parallels and MS Windows 8.1.
So far it seems to be working just fine except bank account downloads don't automatically appear when Money starts. You have to do a file import from the downloads.

Mail app quits unexpected as soon as it opens after upgrading to mountain lion from lion

I 've just upgraded to mountain Lion from Lion and then I used migration assistant and a time machine backup in order to restore my application and other settings to my new OS.
As soon as I click the Mail.app it quits unexpectedly. If I click the reopen button in the message that appears, the app instantly requits.
Any suggestions?

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

Our 2 computers haven't experienced any significant problems, even though others have. I find it much better than 10.7 Lion, which I used for a week before reverting to 10.6.8

If you have successfully downloaded Mountain Lion it will be in your Applications folder "Install OS X.app"

I had a situation where when I upraded to Lion from Snow Leopard, my Time Machine Backups became unusable. It says that the Backups were not compatible and it was really frustrating because I had to delete my backups from Snow Leopard and re-backup from my Mac with the newly installed Lion.
Will this happen if I upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion? Has anyone had trouble from this upgrade to Mountain Lion. Has your Time Machine backups been working fine with the new operating system?
