FW disks not on desktop but are mounted, no owner?

This is a weird problem that I wasn't having yesterday but am having today... I'd appreciate some help and advice.
I have 2 external fire wire 400 drives daisy chained together and going into the back of my G4 450 runnining os10.4
They have always mounted and shown up on the desktop. At some point yesterday I noticed they were not there.
Today I opened disk utility, which shows they are there and thinks they are mounted. If i get info on either of them I notice that under "owner" is says no. There is no option to change it.
How do I see my disks on the desktop so I can click them and change the ownership???
Disk Warrior was of no help either as it has no change ownership options.
any ideas??
donna

Hi Donna,
The Finder allows you to toggle whether external drives appear on the Desktop. Maybe a re-toggle is in order. In the Finder, choose Finder->Preferences from the menu, then click the General tab, and see whether hard disks are chosen to be shown. If they are, simply uncheck and re-check.
Once your drives appear on the Desktop, select one of them and choose File->Get Info from the Finder menu. You'll see in the Ownership & Permissions tab that the "Ignore ownership on this volume" is checked. This is the default behavior for external drives, and allows for much easier use if the drive is being plugged into various computers. If the drives are only used on your current computer, then you can gain a very small amount of security by unchecking this feature.

  • Hard drives appear on desktop, but are inaccessible

    Hi.
I recently bought a 17' macbook pro 2.6. I previously had a g4 with four hard drives in it, so I took a couple of them out and put them in external cases. I also have a few external hard drives that were always externals (never in the g4).
The problem I have is that I cannot access one of the formerly internal hard drives. It appears in disk utility and I verified it and there was a minor repair needed (I forget what), so I used the repair function and nothing has changed. The drive icon appears on the desktop, but not under "devices" in the finder window. When I double click on the drive on the desktop, any open finder windows disappear for a few seconds, then reappear, but the drive does not open.
The same thing happens about half of the time with another external drive that was always an external drive. The strange thing is that, even if I can't open the drive, iTunes can access the music files and library on that drive. These drives work fine on my wife's macbook (2.16, running 10.4).
And as if that weren't strange enough, about half of the times that I select "documents" from the "places" menu in the finder window, the same thing happens (finder windows disappear for a few seconds and the documents folder doesn't open), yet I can access my documents folder through my home folder.
The other drive I pulled from my g4 is currently my time machine drive and has no similar problems. Two other external drives also have no problems.
    Does this ring any bells?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

  • Applications not in dock, but are running?

Preview, QuickTime Player, Grab, and maybe some other applications do not show up in the dock when all windows are closed but the application is still running. It gets really annoying having to force quit preview every time I open an image off an external drive. The fact that this problem has been there since Mountain Lion, and maybe in Lion as well, on every single mac I've ever had, tells me its not a bug, but an "innovative feature." The problem is, I can't imagine any advantage to it. It justs causes problems. Is this fixable?

    Sparon,
it’s running Mavericks, and I didn’t do anything — it has acted that way since I’d installed 10.9.0 (on a fresh SSD), and I currently have 10.9.2 installed.
Where is the red X which you’d used to close an image in Preview? All that I saw were the red-yellow-green “traffic lights” on the left-hand side of the Preview title bar when I’d opened an image in Preview. When I click on the red “traffic light”, or select File → Close Selected Image, the image disappears, and Preview is still running, as I would expect. However, in my experimentation, I found that if I switch to Terminal right after closing the image, Preview  disappears from the Dock, but the ps command (which stands for “process status”) under Terminal shows that Preview is still running — that disappearance from the Dock does seem like a bug, or at minimum unexpected behavior, to me. If I then go to the Applications folder in Finder and double-click on Preview, it becomes visible in the Dock again. Selecting Preview → Quit Preview from there still causes it to quit normally; the ps command shows that it is no longer running. (I tried this with images on both my internal disk and an external disk, and they behaved identically.) Despite the disappearance of Preview from my Dock, I didn’t need to force quit from Preview at any time.

  • Hard Disk not exist! But spins up ok

Hey guys, I've got a HP Pavilion DV5 1000ea, which is just over 2 years old. For the last week I've frequently had a lot of trouble booting up, it seems like the hard drive isn't being recognised. I get a message saying that there's no boot device detected, and when I try to do a hard drive self test I get a "Hard Disk Not Exist" error message. At one of these two error message points I also get an error code of (3F0).
Now, I have tried taking the hard drive out of the laptop, reseating the connections both on the back of the hard drive and on the motherboard, and booting up while the hard drive is laying flat in the palm of my hand. I can feel it spin up fine, it doesn't seem to make any clicking noises like a dying hard drive might, I can even hear it reading the hard drive very briefly once or twice - but I'm still being told the hard drive doesn't exist! On boot up, the "hard disk access" LED on the laptop comes on solid for a few seconds, then goes off, and then maybe flickers on and off briefly once or twice (all while on the HP splash screen) before giving me the error. I should possibly also mention that the label on top of the hard drive looks a bit scorched, I presume that's from the heat generated from the wifi card situated beneath it.
So the short of it is, this is happening almost every time i try to boot up my laptop now. Sometimes I have to try booting up 10-15 times, but so far it has eventually always recognised the hard drive and booted up and worked perfectly fine with no issues in operation. I just feel that at this stage it's likely that someday the laptop isn't going to boot up at all.
I'm happy to replace the hard drive if that's going to sort the problem, but since it spins up fine every time with no clicking noises whether the laptop recognises it or not, I wonder if that's really what the problem is. Could it be a faulty cable between the drive and mobo? Could it be a problem on the mobo itself?
    Would greatly appreciate any assistance!
    Thanks in advance!
    johoro

Think horses not zebras. Not every hard drive error results in clicking. You likely have an issue with the electronic circuitry of the drive, not the mechanical parts, i.e. seek head or platters. A replacement green board would likely fix it but it is much easier to find a new hard drive. Am I 100% sure? No but I am 92% sure.

  • "disk not ejected properly" but is still mounted on desktop?

    Hi,
I get a "The disk was not ejected properly" message, yet if I go to the Finder's desktop the drive is still mounted and accessible and read/write works fine.
I've witnessed it happen once while viewing the desktop. The drive disappears momentarily for about 1.5 - 2 seconds, then shows up again. So It DOES eject, but it instantly re-mounts, and I mean in under 2 seconds and I've neder experienced a drive intentioanlly unmount/remount this fast in my life. It does happen more often when waking from sleep, but not only in that instance.
Been having this bug since OS X Lion and on to the current version of Marveicks. I am posting this under Mavericks because it's not hardware specific to anything other than USB and LaCie. I am experiencing it on multiple machines, different models, with different external LaCie drives of differing types, with different USB cables. This does not only happen when waking from sleep (as most threads seem to indicate), it sometimes happens for no reason.
    The common factors:
All the external drives are LaCie drives (though vastly different models).
Both affected Macs are 2012+ models with Thunderbolt interphases and USB 3 ports (am using USB ports for USB drives, no Thunderbolt adaptors).
I could suspect LaCie, but since it's new since Lion... well you get the picture. Something leads me to suspect a bug in OS X USB protocol, possibly on software, maybe even in firmware. Might be linked to energy saving. I have "sleep drives when possible" enabled, and though it might help to turn that off (I haven't tested yet) I just don't feel I should need to, I want unused drives to spin down and save energy.

    Hello there The Heftster,
It sounds like your external drives are periodically disconnecting on their own from the computer causing the prompt saying that the drive was not ejected properly. I would start by resetting the PRAM on your computer with this article:
OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph14222
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
As well as the SMC on your computer:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Hard disk not detected once, but now working?

    Hi,
I'm Zak, a bit of techie when it comes to playing with software, or re-assembling computers and whatnot. Unfortunately I've got no clue about some other things.
A bit of quick history on my notebook: The fan has been making terrible noises the last few weeks. Initially I thought it was some dust so I got some duster. A lot of dust came out, so that can only be good, but the noises came back after a few days. After some searching I figured the other logical explanation was probably the hard drive going bad. I'm hesitant to send it back to HP because I use it for all my university work and it would really set me back a few weeks to not have it.
So, a few days ago, I booted up my notebook to a "hard drive not detected" - or very similar - message. There were a few options, for f1-f4, they were system information, and 3 different tests (I think). I ran the tests, each one came back fine, noting that there was no OS installed, or hard disk to boot from. I rebooted because I hadn't quite seen it boot up, and wanted to see if there were any other options. Turns out, it started up fine. I restarted once more and again, it did fine.
Next, I scrambled around, backing up all my data, getting together warranty info, installing the HP Support Assistant, etc. I ran all the tests from the Support Assistant and there were no problems detected. Since then I've just been hibernating the notebook when I stop using it, and I haven't encountered any unusual trouble. It all seems fine, but my warranty expires Dec 7th of this year. Is it safe for me to assume the "hard drive not detected" error was just a single misfire? I've read a lot of threads and FAQs on it and it doesn't sound like something that just happens once and goes away. On the other hand, I've never had to use a warranty so am unsure quite how the process works, and like I said, sending it anywhere would put me back in my work.
For the sake of a full post, I have an HP G62-367DX Notebook, running on Windows 7 64-bit OS, and as far as I know there were no changes made between the error and my prior boot. If there's any other information I can provide, just let me know.
Cheers, thank you very much for any assistance, and good day
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The tests from the Assistant are not as comprehensive or reliable as the full hard drive test in the BIOS....tap F10 as you power up, go in there and find the hard drive test. Run the long form test and see what is says. It is not unusual for hard drive issues to start as intermittent and gradually get more frequent. If your drive passes the long form test you can fairly safely assume it was a one-time gremlin of some sort, but it is still a real good idea to back up. I like the idea of the online backup services and I will name Carbonite only because it is well known and not as an endorsement. There are several more and an external drive is also a good idea.
You cannot put off a reboot forever; you are going to have to confront the issue at some point.

  • HT4897 My Aliases are still on my iMac desktop but are no longer on my iPhone.  All operating systems are the current offerings.

I have i-OS8 on the phone and Yosemite in the Cloud and when I did this I still have the original 5 Aliases on the desktop, sending and receiving but I can no longer do it from the iPhone.  What Happened?
I can get my main mail account to work on the apple ID account and as a test I tried adding a new alias and that worked but all my old ones are not working.
One of the old aliases was pretty important to me, what can I do??

The only answer I have is not a pleasant one. Your photos are gone. There may be computer services that might be able to retrieve photos from a formatted drive (and they might not be able to retrieve the photos from the formatted drive). These services are usually quite expensive.
PSE has low res thumbnails. You could blow them up in the Organizer to single image view, and then do a screen capture to save these low-quality photos. You would have to do this one by one.
In the future, making backups is a very important step. If your burner isn't working, you need to get it fixed, or you need to get an external hard drive for backups. You are one of a large number of people who have written here that your photos are gone ... and for anyone else reading this far, don't let this happen to you.

  • Tracknames when brne do not reflect songname but are just trackxx.cda

I use itunes 141.0.4.4-want to burn playlist on cd. Although "include cd-tekst" is checked, tracknames are trackxx.cda and not the name-field.cda (name-field from the playist). Was not so in previous versions. How to correct this?

    IThanks,
but I see now that I was to quick asking this question.
Indeed windows see only tracknames but the name can be changed ( I use artiest-track title.ext (with ext mp3 or wav) - the values are read from the included cd-tekstwhen ripping with f.e. freerip
so consider my question as solved for now.

  • Did not sync contacts, but are the data being backup?

Lets say I did not sync contacts from my iPhone to Address Book or Outlook or anything. But I always do backup through iTunes. Then, lets say something gone wrong with my iPhone and I need to Restore all data from my backup. Will I get all my contacts back?

Yes they are in the backup that is made with each sync. However, you really should start to sync them with something.
If you don't want to use Outlook or computer's address book, I would suggest using gMails contacts. It will sync over the air for any changes and you will know at least your contacts are always someplace safe. Also, the backup file Apple makes while works, it is still one file that if gets messed up or lost, you are out of luck. With gMail you can at least get to it from any computer and export it out if you have to.

took 2nd hd out of old pc (2nd drive only had itunes library)and installed in new pc, all my music and podcasts are there but all my apps are gone, both free and purchased, but they are on my ipod touch, how can i get them back into library?

    1. Authorise your PC to your iTunes account if you haven't already done so.
    2. Connect iPod Touch to iTunes.
    3. File > Transfer purchases from "X's iPod Touch"

Songs and albums that I have already purchased appear available to buy again. Even If I try to buy them (again) I get not notification that I have already purchased it before. I've just bought an album, downloaded it, and now when I search for it it's there, available to buy again!

  • I made a movie in imovie, and somehow I consolidated media and now my movie is saved to my desktop but won't play. HELP!

I made an imovie. And then when I was trying to save it and burn it to a disk I chose "consolidate media". Now its on a disk and my desktop, but its not showing media or playing. How do I fix this?! Please tell me there is a way to "expand".... Help please!

iMovie will not "see" a project unless it is in the Movies/iMovie Projects/ folder on the internal drive. It can also be in the iMovie Projects folder at the top level of an external drive.
You will want to move your RCPROJECT file back to the iMovie Projects folder in the drive it was in when it last worked correctly. Then restart iMovie.

  • External HD not mounted on desktop but available in File Open

I have an Intel MacMini which I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. The internal hard drive is about 80% full so I have bought a WD My Book Studio II 1TB external drive which I currently have attached by USB (as I saw some people were having issues with FW connections).
I use SONOS music players and have my iTunes library on this external HD. It seemed to work fine for the first few days but now the SONOS cannot find the music library. When I login to the Mac I do not see the WD drive mounted on the desktop but it appears with a green light in the WD drive manager and I can also see it as a mounted drive if I click in File>Open in an application such as Text Edit. My applications such as iTunes and iPhoto canont see the data stored on this drive  but within TextEdit I can open folders so the drive must be attached and working to some degree :-/
Does anyone have any idea why it would be behaving like this and what I can do to rectify this?
    Thanks
