FYI: Manually provided DNS addresses are higher priority than DHCP's

As an FYI to folks here concerned about the issue, manually entered DNS addresses do indeed supercede any provided by DHCP despite what you might be led to believe by the appearance of the Network->Advanced->DNS preference pane.
When you manually enter a DNS server address in Mac OS X Leopard's Network preference pane, the manually entered address(es) appear below any DHCP-provided addresses (which are shown in grey as they are unchangeable), leading one to assume that DHCP-provided addresses always have priority over any a user may specify.
However, a check of the /etc/resolv.conf file generated by Mac OS X shows that in fact user-provided DNS addresses will supercede any provided by DHCP.
As an example, if your router promotes itself as a DHCP server, its IP address, say "192.168.0.253," will appear, greyed out, in the Network->Advanced->DNS preferences pane.
If you then add, say, OpenDNS' addresses of "208.67.222.222" and "208.67.220.220," the preferences window will show:
192.168.0.253 (greyed out)
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
But the generated /etc/resolv.conf will show the order Mac OS X will actually reference the servers is:
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220
nameserver 192.168.0.253
While this is non-intuitive with respect to how the addresses are displayed in the preference pane, it is exactly the way one would hope things would work - allowing you to specify DNS servers to be used in lieu of any a router provides, especially handy if the router propagates the address of a DNS server that is having issues or is simply overloaded or offline.
Note that as I do not have an unpatched copy of Leopard available, I cannot say if this has always been Mac OS X's behavior or if this ordering was added by Security Update 2008-005.
Regardless, this also means no special modifications are required to try to "turn off" the honoring of DHCP-provided DNS server addresses.

That's good to know. However, users may wish to solely provide their own DNS servers and not have the chance that in case their DNS servers are unreachable they end up using the default one.
that's the problem. there is no way to easily remove the default DHCP provided DNS server. there is [a hack|http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080725172011439&query=dns] that has been discussed in several threads but it can break various functions.
I guess one option would be to just add more custom DNS servers to ensure they get used over the default one.
That's the only reasonable thing to do.

    With the recent revelation of DNS server security issues, many have expressed a desire to use DNS servers they know to be secure rather than the servers specified by their routers via DHCP, which often are those of a particular ISP.

    That's very good to KNOW.
    I figured it as such as I have some manual entries for the office and I don't use profiles, so it stays there when I go home.
    I notice a slow-down when office DNS entries are used at home -as one would suspect.
    I do like KNOWING that it's the case though - thanks for the info!

  • Give LAN higher priority than wireless / deactivate wireless if LAN is connected

    Hi.
    What I want to do is quite simple: Im my office there is a quite fast LAN connection and a rather poor wireless connection. Therefore, I want to tell my device: "If there is a LAN cable plugged in, just use LAN. Do not use Wifi in this case. If there is no LAN cable plugged in, try to connect to Wifi."
    It is really annoying to change that manually each time.
    I have already changed the network connection priority in Windows 7 as described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2526067
    But to no avail.
    My notebook is E531.
    Wifi Device: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230
    Driver Date 30.09.2012
    Driver Version 15.3.1.2
    Solved!

    Hi cis,
    do you by any chance have Access Connections installed on your system?  It is possible that the WLAN adapter is set to a higher priority than LAN in your location profile which is causing the behaviour.  If you don't have AC installed it may be a possible solution you could try.

  • How to: Give 1 SSID higher priority than other SSIDs

    I sometime have up to 90 people connected to an AP.I have 3 SSIDs on my APs. 1 of them is the Corporate one and I need people who on that SSID have special treatment and make their network run faster , in the event of congestion. I dont really care about the service quality of the other SSIDs.
    Note: The congestion is only at the AP since 90 people is a little too much for an AP. Once they get through Wireless to Wire, I dont have problem with Wire connection so no End-to-End QOS I prefer.
    How do I archive this ?
    I am on WLC v8.0

    I undestand. But think about it for a moment. 80 non QoS devices all contending for the network at various parts in time and 10 QoS devices doing the same.
    Even when a QoS device wants to trigger a frame he needs to listen to the medium. He may hear some mix of 80 other devices using the medium. The QoS device does his backoff and starts to count down. While counting down he is listening to the medium and hearing other (part of the 80 clients) transmitting frames. The QoS device then needs to pause, wait and then resume countdown when these frames are heard. When he hits 0 with his NAV, with 80 other clients on that cell the odds of him being the only one transmitting at that point of time isn't as good if there were only 20 clients on cell.
    So my point being while you QoS you may not see the performance you want with that many people on cell.

  • EA6900 Bridge mode setup - not getting proper DNS addresse

    I have an EA6900 that I am trying to use just as an access point (have an existing sonicwall as my internet connection / router device)
    Here are the steps I have completed
    I have logged in to the modem, and created a modem password - can log into modem wirelessly with modem password
    I went into the connectivity settings and selec ted bridge mode - with auto IPv4 settings
        I get the right IP address segment on my laptop, but the DNS addresses are not from my network (not even the settings from my sonicwall)
    I then set the IPv4 settings manually, and enterred a static IPv4 address, as well as the gateway (as my sonicwall), and the DNS addresses of 2 of my servers as well as an external DNS server address
    When I connect to the EA6900 with a laptop, I still do not get the DNS addresses I have enterred in the fields on the EA6900 connectivity setup screen
    I even tried to enter my server as a gateway - not the sonicwall, and that does not work either (laptop gets the same DNS server addresses)
    Any way to do this?
    Briudge mode, Get DHCP from my server (works), get DNS server addresses as are enterred in connectivity settings (not working)

    "I have logged in to the modem, and created a modem password - can log into modem wirelessly with modem password" Modem? or do you mean the Router? Modem and router are two different things.
    That DNS are you seeing on the devices?

  • Is it possible in IOS to have two static routes for the same subnet, one a higher priority and "failover" between the 2?

    Hi All
    Is it possible in IOS to have for a particular subnet:
    a) Two static routes?
    b) Make one static route a higher priority than the other?
    c) If one static router "goes down", failover to the lower priority static route?
    We have a l2tp/vpdn connection to a supplier which can be accessed via two vlans/routes. I would like to make one route the preferred one but the "route" to failover if the preferred route goes down.
    Again, many thanks in advance for all responses!
    Thanks
    John

    Hi John,
    Hope the below explaination will help you...
    R1(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 2.2.2.2
    R1(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 3.3.3.3 10
    If you notice the Administrative Distance for the secondary route pointing to ISP2 is increased to 10 so that it becomes the backup link.
    The above configuration with just two floating static routes partially accomplishes our requirement as it will work only in the scenario where the routers interfaces connected to the WAN link are in up/down or down/down status. But in a lot of situations we see that even though the links remain up but we are not able to reach the gateway, this usually happens when the issue is at the ISP side.
    In such scenarios, IP SLAs becomes an engineer's best friend. With around six additional IOS commands we can have a more reliable automatic failover environment.
    Using IP SLA the Cisco IOS gets the ability to use Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) pings to identify when a WAN link goes down at the remote end and hence allows the initiation of a backup connection from an alternative port. The Reliable Static Routing Backup using Object Tracking feature can ensure reliable backup in the case of several catastrophic events, such as Internet circuit failure or peer device failure.
    IP SLA is configured to ping a target, such as a publicly routable IP address or a target inside the corporate network or your next-hop IP on the ISP's router. The pings are routed from the primary interface only. Following a sample configuration of IP SLA to generate icmp ping targeted at the ISP1s next-hop IP.
    R1(config)# ip sla 1
    R1(config)# icmp-echo 2.2.2.2 source-interface FastEthernet0/0
    R1(config)# timeout 1000
    R1(config)# threshold 2
    R1(config)# frequency 3
    R1(config)# ip sla schedule 1 life forever start-time now
    The above configuration defines and starts an IP SLA probe.
    The ICMP Echo probe sends an ICMP Echo packet to next-hop IP 2.2.2.2 every 3 seconds, as defined by the “frequency” parameter.
    Timeout sets the amount of time (in milliseconds) for which the Cisco IOS IP SLAs operation waits for a response from its request packet.
    Threshold sets the rising threshold that generates a reaction event and stores history information for the Cisco IOS IP SLAs operation.
    After defining the IP SLA operation our next step is to define an object that tracks the SLA probe. This can be accomplished by using the IOS Track Object as shown below:
    R1(config)# track 1 ip sla 1 reachability
    The above command will track the state of the IP SLA operation. If there are no ping responses from the next-hop IP the track will go down and it will come up when the ip sla operation starts receiving ping response.
    To verify the track status use the use the “show track” command as shown below:
    R1# show track
    Track 1
    IP SLA 1 reachability
    Reachability is Down
    1 change, last change 00:03:19
    Latest operation return code: Unknown
    The above output shows that the track status is down. Every IP SLAs operation maintains an operation return-code value. This return code is interpreted by the tracking process. The return code may return OK, OverThreshold, and several other return codes.
    Different operations may have different return-code values, so only values common to all operation types are used. The below table shows the track states as per the IP SLA return code.
    Tracking
    Return Code
    Track State
    Reachability
    OK or over threshold
    (all other return codes)
    Up
    Down
    The Last step in the IP SLA Reliable Static Route configuration is to add the “track” statement to the default routes pointing to the ISP routers as shown below:
    R1(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 2.2.2.2 track 1
    R1(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 3.3.3.3 10
    The track number keyword and argument combination specifies that the static route will be installed only if the state of the configured track object is up. Hence if the track status is down the secondary route will be used to forward all the traffic.
    Please rate the helpfull posts.

    Naidu.

  • How RequestDespatcher.include() method gets higher priority  ?

    Hi,
    I have three jsp pages named as A.jsp ,B.jsp and C.jsp respectively. In A.jsp , i include B.jsp using include directive and i include C.jsp using RequestDispatcher.include().
    But in output of A.jsp , The output of C.jsp comes as first and then output of B.jsp comes as second , eventhough i included B.jsp before C.jsp.
    I don't know why RequestDispatcher.include() gets higher priority than include directive of JSP.
    Just clear me.
    thanks in advance,
    nvseenu

    It has to do with when each cache is flushed.
    Each of these JSP pages will build up its output text into a buffer. When that buffer is full, or you flush it manually, the text gets written to the underlying output stream.
    The jsp:include uses the same buffer as its parent page. The output writer of the current page gets passed to it so that it can just append to the end.
    When you short-circuit things by using the RequestDispatcher manually, you only pass along the request/response. The page invoked then obtains the output stream, and wraps its own buffer around it.
    When a page is complete, it flushes its buffer to the output stream.
    So the order is:
    Page B completes and flushes its buffer. That result gets sent to A's buffer.
    Page C completes and flushes its buffer. That result gets sent straight to the underlying response output stream.
    Then page A finishes, flushes its buffer. All of its buffer (including what it got from B) now gets written to the outputstream.
    Solutions:
    You can manually flush the writer before you invoke the RequestDispatcher: ie out.flush(). If you try to forward/redirect after this though, it will raise an error.
    If you really want to get complicated, create a ResponseWrapper, and when you invoke the RequestDispatcher, pass it a response object with an outputstream/writer that gets added to the current buffer (ie what it does with a jsp:include)
    Or you can just use jsp:include.
    here is some code to play with.
    Try changing the flush attribute on the jsp:include to "true" and see what happens.
    Uncomment the out.flush() command to get it to print in the "correct" order.
    // includeOrder.jsp
    <html>
    <body>
    Ok, this is the main page of this little test.
    At this point we are going to <jsp:include> the second page:<br>
    <jsp:include page="includeOrder2.jsp" flush="false"/>
    <hr>
    And now we use requestDispatcher.include() to include the third page<br>
    <%-- out.flush();  --%>
    <% request.getRequestDispatcher("includeOrder3.jsp").include(request, response); %>
    <hr>
    And now we are done.
    </body>
    </html>
    // includeOrder2.jsp
    Here we are on page 2!
    // includeOrder3.jsp
    Beware of page 3!Cheers,

  • How to assign higher priority for labview while running other applications.

    HI,
    I am performing 2 time critical counter operations. I am using software time due to the hardware limitation of PCI6013(I have tried all other options). My problem is that I get a erractic value when I use mouse, keyboard or change to other application.
    I found the following link providing a method to provide maximum priority to labview application.But even regular labview users are asked not to use this application. I am not even a regular LABview user.Is there any precaution that I should take to use this VI. I am in need of such an application very badly. Please Help.

    "Is there any precaution that I should take to use this VI."
    Yes many,
    When you start to experiment with settings priorities in an attempt to avoid the affects of mouse clicks, then you should brace yourself for the application appearing hung. This would happen if LV had a higher priority than the mouse interupt service routine.
    Same applies to the other conditions you mentioned.
    If you go this route, backup before you experiment! Some strange things can happen to your file system.
    I have talked to you about this challenge of yours in another thread. This is what I recomend.
    1) If you can live with your readings being made on only one gear at a time, AND the sample rate being aperiodic, then you MAY be able to use DAQ Occurances and two session. I
    have not done this myself, and AM NOT SURE if it can be done or if you hardare supports it, but maybe;
    a) Open two references to your and configure A so it uses hardware timing (like you already said works good) to count gear A using the other counter as the gate. On the other session you are counting gear B.
    b) Configure both of the above to fire occurances when done.
    c)Start only session A.
    d) When A occurance fires start B.
    e) When B fires start A, etc.
    This will give you determinism on the counts and effectively shift the indeterminism to the update interval.
    If this is not good enough then there is another option. Can you get yourself a nice solid external reference that you can apply as an external gate to both counters? If so you will be using hardware timing and you should be on the right track.
    If these do not work out, you may end up having to go to different hardware.

  • BT DNS addresses hacked?

    A couple of days ago my internet search started to act strangely. Some search results did not go to where I expected. All Adobe sites and some others were going to a 'Update flash' page and the internet was generally not very responsive. Microsoft Security Essentials also went off-line as soon as it attempted to get an update (about 1 minute after startup).
    A quick online search found the 'Adobe Flash Player Virus'. I assumed that I had somehow managed to install a virus.  Malwarebytes couldn't find anything and after much searching, installation of 'rootkit killers' and virus searching products and a system restore, it was still the same!
    I eventually traced the problem to my router. The DNS had been set to 5.45.75.36. The router was still set to 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'. Resetting the router fixed the problem and the DNS addresses are now as I expect them to be.
    So what happened? Has BT been hacked? Is it be a good idea to set the 'Preferred DNS servers' option so this can't happen again?

    Hi Chris
    You are not alone, I had this problem back in April, At the time I didn't realise it was caused by an e-mail, as I was  having problems with Yahoo. I also used Outlook Express.
    After spending a month trying to sort Yahoo out and clean my computer,  I eventually wiped Yahoo off my computer, and downloaded another browser. Internet Explorer.
    While  this was going on I  was also getting lots of spam, I remember those  e-mails that started with HI.
    Not long after this,  something corrupted the intray in my Outlook Express e-mail program,  I couldn't receive any e-mails, the only  e-mail coming in, was from Amazon, this set up  a continuous loop, when it got to 45  I wiped Outlook Express off my computer, I'm now with Hotmail.
    I've now got a new computer,  Yahoo and  Outlook Express, are not coming anywhere near it.
    How do you mean you downloaded Internet Explorer ? A PC comes with that automatically (as well as Outlook Express). It sounds like you're prehaps referring to a computer that may have had an installation of bolt-ons as part of the initial installed package.
    Yahoo "browser" and Outlook Express are not the cause of spam, and frankly unless you "replied" to a spam email or installed something, perhaps didn't have up to date operating system, or no anti-virus or other security package, the the cause of your issue could have been nothing to do with the emails.
    Outlook Express is not available for Windows 7, so will not be available anyway.
    Without knowing the details of the problem, your issue with OE and receipt of emails could have been a numbers of things. Using a hotmail account doesn't actually do anything to prevent spam etc.
    What account was getting lots of spam ? Do you still check it now ?

  • Lync Phone Edition Option 006 DNS - Multiple DNS addresses

    Hi Guys,
    I have a question which I have been asked, but been unable to find the answer to.
    Under DHCP configuration option 006 (DNS Servers), we specify two different IP addresses;
    However on the phone under system information, it only shows the first address:
    Does anyone know if the phone actually takes notice of the second IP address ?
    I have used the send logs function and checked over them on the front-end, but no DNS addresses are mentioned at all (I was hoping it might show both, even though the sysinfo doesn't).
    My colleague would like to know whether in the event of the first DNS server being unavailable, would the second server specified in DHCP option 006 be used by the Lync phone ?
    Thanks

    All articles including Jeff's http://blog.schertz.name/2010/12/configuring-lync-server-for-phone-edition-devices/
    show only one DNS server However from what I understand If DNS fails it will fall back to Wins if configured
    The best solution in the that case would be to update option 006 in case of DNS failure

    Have a new IPad with IOS6.  Will not send emails.  Addresses are valid but get notice each time that "recipient was rejected by the server."  Apple has apparently neglected to put out a manual with IOS6 and the previous manual has no indication of what to do.  Really miss Steve Jobs.

  • Override router provided DNS settings?

    I would like to specify two default DNS servers that always take priority over the ones assigned to me by the router on whatever network I connect to.
    This appears under my AirPort settings. As I understand it, the gray entries are provided to me by my router. (This changes to 10.1.1.5 when I am at school.) The black entries are self defined, but due to my inability to drag them ABOVE the gray entires, I am under the impression that I am unable to override the default DNS server for whichever network I am currently connected to.
    Is my "problem" just a failure to understand how networking in OS X works? In any case, I do NOT want to use the DNS servers assigned to me. I ALWAYS want to use OpenDNS. Is there any way I can do this?
    Thanks

    There's really a security issue here. Arguably, nobody should be able to override the settings passed via DHCP because those settings presumably are best for your network. Your network administrator might use DNS to block or redirect some addresses, or provide inside "local" addresses (ie: 192.168.x.x) that your outside DNS server doesn't supply, so the wrong DNS server will break things. A malicious DNS server entry can direct your traffic somewhere entirely unexpected and be a major security hole.
    True, but it should be the responsibility of your network's administrator to block such things.
    Users can specify any DNS server they want, it's up to your network admin to block port 53 to other sites.
    That having been said, you can simply add your own DNS servers to your Network preference pane's DNS sheet; manually specified DNS servers override any provided by your router via DHCP, despite the fact that they appear above the addresses you specify in the preference pane (though in grey.)

    I've tried resetting the router, resetting my airport on my laptop, unplugging the router, restarting my computer, updating all my software (including from snow leopard to mountain lion) replacing the dns ip address, and restarting the browsers. It won't let me use wi-fi on any of the browsers (chrome, firefox, safari), but will allow me to use internet through the ethernet cable.
    This happened earlier today when for my job I tried to clear some expired certificates and I removed the expired ones that were on my firefox (I now use chrome) and the internet crashed soon afterwards. While I was deleting the certificates, I also got the "blue screen of death" sort of thing that popped up and shut my computer down.
    I have no idea what to do and my laptop is no longer under warranty. Can anybody help me?

    Please read this whole message and be sure you understand all of it before doing anything. Back up all data before making changes to your settings.
    Write down the server addresses.
    Click Cancel to close the Advanced sheet. Unlock the preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Open the DNS tab again and change the server addresses to the following:
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.
    In Safari, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. Any difference?
    Notes:
    1. If you lose Internet access after making the above change to your network settings, delete the Google servers in the Network preference pane, then select the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. That should restore the original DNS settings; otherwise restore them yourself.
    2. I’m not advocating Google or anything else as a DNS provider; the server addresses are offerred merely for testing purposes. There may be privacy and technical issues involved in using that service, which you should investigate personally before you decide whether to keep the settings. Other public DNS services exist.

  • Airport Extreme off a Router which provides DNS - Guest Networks

    I am sure that I am not alone here.
    I have a BTBroadband wireless ADSLModem/Router which provides DNS for the network.
    Off tyhe router is a Netgear switch which has connected to it an Airport Extreme. Also off this switch I have many other peripherals - such as Time Capsule, iMac etc.
    So the arrangement is simple in logical terms:
    BT Modem------->Wireless Router (which allocates DNS)---------->Switch----------->Airport Extreme  etc.
    IP Settings as follows
    192.168.0.1 for Wireless Router - which allocates DNS in range 192.168.0.2 to 0.150.
    I have allocated a fixed IP on the Airport Extreme of 192.168.0.151
    The devices thart run off this are all having DNS allocated by the router - not the Airport Extreme.
    So - how do I set up (or can I set up) the Guest Wireless Network?
    Let's assume Router Wireless Network is call MainWireless with a Password MainWord, The Airport Extreme is acting in Bridge Mode and has the exact same 'Create a wireless network' called MainWIreless and Password MainWord (as per best practices in using these to provide the best 'network hopping' capabilities for devices (I actually have 2 other wireless devices from TimeCapsules that operate the wireless in the same way).
    All of this works fine.
    However when I set up the Guest Network on the Airport Extreme - simply by enabling it - I provide a new Guest Network name of GuestWireless with a password GuetsPassword. In theory it should all work fine, however the devices connecting to the Guest Network cannot get to the internet (effectively I don't think that the 'iPhone for example' is being allocated a correct IP Address - in fact I know that it isn't as its a 169 range and a different subnet).
    So - the only way I can think of doing this is to go into the Network Settings on the Airport Extreme, Change Bridge Mode Wireless to DHCP and NAT and then go into Network Options. Here I am a bit lost and need help.
    To summarise - Main Router Address 192.168.0.1 allocates range 192.168.0.2 to 150, Airport Extreme Address (static) address 192.168.0.151.
    Airport Extreme DHCP and NAT Network Options has:
    IPv4 DHCP Range - I have set to 192.168.0.152 to 255
    Guest IPv4 DHCP Range 10.0.0 152 to 255
    NAT Port Mapping Protocol is switched Off
    - This won't even save.
    Should be simple I would have thought. Think again...
    Please help - mwhat should I / can I do to enable a guest wireless network?

    Thanks for all that - I suspected as much (and I did mean DHCP not DNS).
    So - if I disable DHCP on the HomeHub3 IP 192.168.0.1, and set the Airport Extreme IP Address at 192.168.0.2, what do I do with DHCP and NAT settings to have a Main and Guest Wireless Network?
    I can easily change the order of things if necessary to be :
    BT Modem (192.168.0.1 with DHCP disabled)--->Airport Extreme (192.168.0.2 (set to get DNS from 192.168.0.1) )--->Switch---->Various wired and wireless devices.
