G4 hung at boot - what updates were recently installed?

I am an experienced PC user working on a friend's iMac G4 800mhz. A few days ago, she installed two or three Apple updates. Now her iMac G4 hangs at the boot screen with the Apple and the rotating "gear".
I have indeed searched the discussion forums beforehand. I have found what I think will be the solution to the problem; *reinstalling the updates from a mounted USB disk using terminal*. My problem is that I do not know exactly what updates she recently installed and she doesn't know either. Is there anywhere on the hard disk that I can find a dated list of her updates or anything that will allow me to know what updates I need to reinstall?
Lastly, where on earth do I find and download these updates?
I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Glynn provides good advice but also try starting in Safe Mode and see if that helps - it's easier if it does.

If it doesn't start up normally after a safe boot I would then try starting with the installer disc (a bit easier for most than a bunch of typing commands, and the fsk thing doesn't repair permissions which has to be done from a full boot).
Boot from the installer disk, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. You can verify a drive from DU on your main drive while booted but I have found this can result in incorrect reporting of errors. To repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive anyway.
Next, boot from your drive in [Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393] and repair permissions. You can repair permissions while booted from the installer disc but this uses the permissions configuration on the installer disc which may be out of date if you have run any updates on your computer. Booting your computer to Safe Mode restricts the number of things running on your computer while permissions are being run and does a bit of spring cleaning at the same time.

From BDaqua (couldn't have said it better):
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer (Edit: Do not use this disc if it is not the same general version as what you have currently on your computer, e.g. use a Tiger disc for a Tiger drive, not a Panther disc), then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes."
If no installer disc, then try the command line repair method.
If you don't have an installer disc available you can try effecting repairs using [fsk in Single User Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214].

So I am trying to installed updates on a Lenovo Desktop 3000 J115.
The message I get is shown in the picture, but I will write it out so this thread shows up in Google:

In the first place I tried uninstalling Avira free antivirus, then installing Norton Antivirus 2009 (full version), but when I restarted it would not launch. I've removed all of my antivirus's at the moment and I want to eventually install Norton after I get the updates installed. But I thought I would ask you guys to see if theres anything I can do before I consider reformatting for the 50th time. I have already googled every keyword I can think of, and this is my last resort. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!.

  • Is there a log of what updates i just installed on my mac 10.8.2

I automatically performed an update and now I can not print to my HP 4700 printer (from any programs: CS3, Word, Entourage, PDF). Is there a list of what updates where downloaded, so that I could have a better idea of what I changed that resulted in not being able to print? I'm able to send a file to be printed to the 4700, the printer "wakes up" and starts processing the data and then just stops. No error message.
What I would like to do is revert back to the state that allowed me to print without any problems. How do I get to that point, if I don't know what it was that changed?
    Please help!

From the apple Menu select Software Update
Allow it to scan for any available up dates.
When finished click on Software update in the menu bar scroll down to preferences then click on that
In the window that opens click on Installed Software radio button and a list/bill of materials is displayed showing all recent Apple distributed software updates that have initiated by you with the date and time. of that process.
Now as it happens Apple has recently distributed a number of HP Printer Driver Updates.
What I would recommend is first turn your printer off and remove the USB cable. Wait a few mnutes and reconnect the cable and reboot your printer
    Try a test print
This will flush what it a cashdriver issue and your printer should work again.
If that does not work go to system preferences/print and scan highlight your printer in the left pane and below that click the minus button to remove your printer.
Now click the plus button and follow the process for adding a new printer.
You may well find the recent Apple printer package has an updated driver for your printer.

  • What update was recently released (3.14.14) for Adobe Reader XI?

    Hello Community!
    My first post here.
I'm working with a partner company dealing with PDF Signature Forms in IE9 (Windows 7 Enterprise SP1). In some instances, clicking on the signature block (when a person was ready to electronically sign) would cause IE9 to "stop working". The exact error message:
    Internet Explorer has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows with close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
    (Close Program)
A work-around for this issue was found by going into Adober Reader under Edit --> Preferences and under Security (Enhanced), checking the box labeled, "Enable Protected Mode at startup".
This is not a viable solution for us as the majority of our customers are not technical in nature and we would prefer not to have them attempt to change their configurations on their own.
Today, my partner company noted an update to Adobe Reader when he opened a PDF directly into reader (rather than IE). Since that update, He has been able to sign documents in IE9 without the "Enable Protected Mode at startup" box checked.
Again, this is not something we want our customers to be performing on their own (in fact, they can't).
    So what was this update?
Is it available for download and inclusion into an OS build?
How do I go about receiving it?
    Adobe Reader XI version: 11.0.06
    Internet Explorer 9 version: 9.0.8112.16421
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks Pat,
It appears my cohort was mistaken. The "update" performed was actually under Trust Manager --> Automatic Adoble Approved Trusted Certificates Updates
It appears that was the update that was performed.
    Thanks again,

  • Boot Camp Update Does Not Install Completely

I posted a question with this title back in April. Lots of others were having the same problem (trying to go from 2.1 to 2.2).
Finally found a solution, but could not post it on the original question because the topic had been archived. I will post it now as an answer to this question.

Here's the solution. Easy but far from obvious.
I found another thread where the advice given was to uninstall any third party video drivers used, for example, to mirror the screen to a remote video projector.
I tried the update once more (to see if Apple had fixed it) and it failed as usual near the end of the update process, with a generic error message that was no help at all. Then I uninstalled a video mirroring driver that I had installed a year ago. Tried the update again and it worked just fine. I was able then to update to Boot Camp 3 from my Snow Leopard install DVD, and then to update it to the latest. I will later try re-installing the video mirror driver.

  • Hi my mid 2012 MacBook air simply refuses to start. My charger is working which is a good sign but even in safe mode my computer won't boot up! I recently installed a product called WhatSizeMac.

As said above I just installed what size Mac and now my computer won't start. As soon as I downloaded it my computer was a little glitch but regarded it as nothing. my computer was later really buggy so I decided to restart it. My computer now will not restart/turn on no matter if it is in safe mode or not. In safe mode it gets around a third of the way and then the progress bar disappeared then the gear remains for a second then the screen goes black then that is it. By the way I have OS X Maverick's .1 or.2, maybe .3 but I doubt it. PS if you can tell me a legit application that will declutter all this space I seemed to have used, yet have no idea HOW! Thanks.

  • How to find out most recent installed software update

We recently installed the latest software updates on our intel xserve running 10.5 via the automatic software updates. The guy who installed them does not remember which updates where installed. Upon reboot we sit and sit at the gray screen with apple and spinning gear.
I can boot into single user mode, and my question is how can I find out what updates where installed recently.
Is there a location I can navigate to and just list the updates with there modified date, or is there any softwareupdate command that might list what updates have been installed.
I know this wont fix the issue, but I would like to know if anyone has an idea how I can at least determine what updates were installed.
    Thanks..

    Use the following:
    ls -l /Library/Receipts/

  • Boot Camp Update failure

Hello good people, hopefully someone can help.
Issue: Boot Camp Update 2.1 failing to install.
I recently did an erase and install on my MacBook. I have run through the steps provided by the installation guide (http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/). I then went to the Apple Software Update program within Windows Vista Ultimate (32bit), selected Boot Camp Update and selected Install 1 item. I then selected Boot Camp Update Download Only from the Tools drop down menu. I then opened the Open Downloaded Updates Folder...selected the downloaded file and selected Apply. that procedure produced a system restart. Restared and tried again, same result.
I have tried the above steps with security software enabled AND disabled.
Does anyone have a step by step resource to sucessfully install Boot Camp Update 2.1?
Thanks for reading, if you have any questions or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Do you have 10.5.5 DVD or later? you may not need 2.1, and it was a two step update, first to update Apple Software Update itself to 2.x, then to update other components.
Some programs like iTunes, Safari 4 beta and others include an Apple Software Update (and cannot be not installed, it gets installed regardless of choosing not to).
Some problems can be related to default language settings.

  • Get "Updates were installed" date from computers

    Hi,
When I go to the control panel and select windows updates, I can see the section that shows when updates were last installed. How can I access the area of the computer that is supplying that date to this view via powershell?

    Here:
    $key='HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\Results\Install'
    (Get-ItemProperty $key).LastSuccessTime
You can find more examples in the "Repository".
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Reload older versions from iTunes on a computer, or buy a newer device.

Go to system preferences, mission control, and unselect "Show Dashboard as a Space".  While you're there, you may want to make dashboard set to a hot corner "Hot Corners" button at the bottom.

Do you have apps purchased with a differnt AppleID?

The others are on my daughters account.
I log out of my iTunes account and log in with hers and those updates show up.

    I Also have this problem!!
In my situation, the screen simply started exhibiting the same symptoms a few weeks ago (early February) for no apparent reason.  At first I thought the screen was dead, but discovered the heat solution by accident.  Now I turn it on and keep it from going to sleep until I go to bed.  Thank goodness the battery is still awesome on this thing.
I bought it new and still has the original screen, I keep it at home (never below 62 degrees).  Coincidentally, this happened a day or two after the expiration of the warranty!!  Any help figuring this one out would be eternally appreciated.
