G4 MDD supports SATA internal drives or ATA/IDE

hi all
I'm looking to add more internal hard drive power into my G4 MDD and was curious if it supports only ATA/IDE drives or can I add SATA internal drives? I was told it can handle larger than 120GB hard drives and will I need to get a fan to cool them down? Thanks, Web dude

you talk about putting larger hard drives on rear bays only
I looked over what I wrote and don't see where I said that. Can you clarify?
Maximum theorectical data transfer rates for ATA100 (aka ATA-6) are a little faster than ATA66) aka ATA-5) but only if the hard drive is fast enough to take advantage--most new ones are more than that at ATA133. One Wikipedia article I read says that, in the Windows world, ATA66 commonly has drive size limitations of 137GB due to the OS and drive controller limitations. I've not seen this in Macs. Nothing I've seen here or elsewhere says you can't put big drives in the front bay.
I personally like to keep the boot drive in the rear bay in case that drive is fast enough to take full advantage of the faster bus. As 2 x 250G is enough space for me today, I tend to use the front bays as temporary mounts when pulling data off drives from some of our older Macs. Those often end up being smaller, older drives between 10G and 120G.

Okay...flashed up to the BIOS v1.35...using a usb fdd...and it worked!  The flash did anyway. Didn't help with the SATA problem. SATA controller enabled in BIOS btw. Switched hd from SATA power connector to legacy molex...no change. I noticed during the POST when I get the "Scanning Devices...Press <tab> to enter User Windows." screen...I noticed I get the Hardware Initiate Failure Press <g> to continue as above...but then mine also says "The BIOS does not installed." I guess they mean the SATA BIOS isn't installed....but yet it shows the VT8237 RAID/SATA controller banner across the top when all this is happening. Why me? It took me quite some time to save up enough cash to build this system...that's the reason for the older parts like the 240s. I work too much to have time to ship this thing back if MSI says RMA the damn thing. I currently have MS-7030 with a Sempron 3100+ 64bit and a MSI NX6600GT-V128 running too...I like the MSI stuff...but this 9130 is getting to be a pain in the rear. Please help. If I have to install WinXP 64 on an IDE drive...I think I'll just save up for another board...I want my OS on a SATA drive.
Also noticed something in the manual....9130 only supports SATA I ....my WD is SATA II. Drive should be backwards compatible right? I'm grasping at straws here. Thanks.
And Bas, you da man! And yes that is flagrant flattery for help.

  • Reliable SATA internal drives?

I'm planning to use my Digital Audio G4 (07/2001) as a music server by adding a SATA PCI card and a largeish (~300GB) internal drive. There's a lot of useful info posted about which SATA cards are out there, so I'm all set on that front.
What I need help with is: which manufacturer's drives are the most reliable? Which drives should I consider and which should I stay away from? Or are they all (Seagate, WD, Maxtor, Hitachi, etc) just about the same quality?
I've heard plenty of bad things about Western Digital drives in previous years... is that still the case, or are the drives more reliable?
I've heard there's an issue with Seagate drives taking several minutes to spin up when the machine wakes from sleep. Is that still an issue?
Are manufacturers' warranties worth considering, or do they just use refurbs (which may be more likely to break down?) as replacement drives?
    Thanks!

    Mark,
I have a Firmtek Seritek 1V4 SATA HD controller and in the course of chatting with tech support I was told to avoid Seagate drives. They have issues with the card. This lead to another warning since Maxtor has been acquired by Seagate. Kim went on to recomend a Hitachi Deskstar so I complied and got a 500 GB model. I have been VERY happy with the performance and the warranty is indeed excellent (3 yrs) so... That's my $.02 worth. Also, I have been informed that Sonnet Technologies SATA card is built by Firmtek so I'd assume that the same issues apply. Good luck and don't scrimp on the GB's. The difference betwwen the 300 and a 500 is minimal so go big!
    Cheers,

  • 1TB WD Caviar Black SATA internal drive won't mount on desktop or Disk Util

I just installed this brand new drive in bay B of my G5 tower...it doesn't appear on the desktop, and not in Disk Utility. Can a 1 TB SATA3 drive be functional in a G5? The owner's manual only mentions a maximum 250GB (or 500GB drive, don't recall) ; maybe that was the biggest available in 2004/05?

Thanks, all. I found a link to WDC drive jumper settings (http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=1337&p_created=1112379341&p_sid=eST7ItDi&p_accessibility=0&p_red irect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NDg3J nBfcHJvZHM9MCZwX2NhdHM9MCZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX 2ZubCZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWp1bXBlciBzZXR0aW5ncyBzYXRh&p_li=&ptopview=1), and jumpered pins 5 and 6 to limit transfer speeds to 150 MB/s. On restart, the OS prompted me to initialize, which I did, and voila, the drive is mounted.
Question: it appears the jumper setting is to convert a SATA2 dirve to SATA1. Is there any reason to try (or jumper setting that would enable) converting my SATA 3 drive to a SATA2 configuration?

  • Seagate Ultra vs. SATA internal drives

I recently went to Best Buy (my first mistake...) to buy an internal SATA drive for my PM G5 Quad. The guy there said the Seagate 400GB Ultra ATA/100 was a SATA drive. The product number was ST3400632A-RK. I don't think this is a SATA drive at all.
After spending/wasting 40 minutes on the phone with some guy at Apple support who knew absolutely nothing, I am about to return the drive to Best Buy, because I'm pretty sure this isn't a SATA drive -- the data connectors look parallel to me.
    Anyway, my questions:
    1. Am I right, and this is not a SATA drive?
    2. What is the name of Seagate's true SATA drive?
    3. Does Seagate's true SATA drive work in the PM G5 quad? (I read something about compatibility problems.)
    4. When you install the drive in the lower drive bay, do you mess with the primary system hard drive at all -- or do you just leave it alone and connect your new drive to the motherboard?
    Thanks.
    Paul S.
Power Mac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

    1. You are right. That is not SATA.
    2. It'll be called SATA.
    3. The Seagate 400GB ST-3400832AS Barracuda 7200.8 SATA w/NCQ Hard Disk should work fine. Watch out for the 7200.9 drives though. Check http://www.barefeats.com and http://www.xlr8yourmac.com for drive tests and recommendations.
    4. I think on the quad one of the cables isn't pulled out for you and you have to fiddle with the primary drive to pull it out before attaching it to the second drive.

  • SATA internal drives for G4 Xserve tray loading

Does anyone know how to turn my two original X-Serves into SATA using machines. The problem is that I would like to have 1.5 to 2 TB drives in each bay but I can't fine IDE drives in that size anywhere.
If anyone has a tip on who manufactures IDE drives in those sizes I would much appreciate it. I've Googled to no end and can't fine anything over 500GB.
    Thanks

Does anyone know how to turn my two original X-Serves into SATA using machines
    Easiest option? Go external.
Seriously. There's no easy easy way to internal SATA. You could add a SATA PCI card, but then you'd have to run cables to the drive bays, and you wouldn't be able to use the drive trays since the bus connector is PATA and not SATA, so you lose the hot-swappability of the drives anyway.
External SATA enclosures and an eSATA card is going to be way, way easier to implement.

  • Moving Internal Drives from a G4 to a G5?

I have a G4that I use for audio editing, but it's dying on me, and I want to upgrade to a G5. But from what I've read, the G5 can only use SATA internal drives. My G4 has two large internal drives, one 250GB for my system files, and general document files, and one 400GB for my audio files. I believe they're both internal SCSI drives connected to a 133 PCI card that I installed (without it, the machine could not read "large" drives). If I buy a used G5, will I be able to use those drives in the G5? Or will I need all new drives to put in it?

Oh boy, I love SCSI, but unless that card works in the G5 you're out of luck, but that beeing said I think, (hope), they might be IDE/ATA drives, then you could put them in Firewire cases to use them, but IDE/ATA Firewire cases are drying up fast, here's one...

  • Mac Pro doesn't recognize any internal drive

My Mac Pro (2008) -- after rebooting -- does not recognize any of the internal drives. I'm running 10.6.8 and all of a sudden after reboot, the machine hangs on grey screen and I get folder w/ question mark symbol. I boot from Snow Leopard install disk but no drive shows up as being able to reinstall on. Even opening up Disk Utility from Snow Leopard disc shows no internal drive.
    Any ideas?

Just a few additional random thoughts on this Hardware:
A SATA controller failure should take out all SATA drives. On the 2008 model, the Optical drives are IDE/ATA, but there are two additional SATA ports (data only) on the motherboard.
In the 2008 and previous models, the Mac Pro RAID card uses a cable called iPass to intercept the essential signals to the four Hard Drive bays and route them through the RAID card. If that iPass cable were to come loose, the four main drive bays would stop working.

i dont think these board support SATA II drives.. and i have the latest bios so whats wrong???
    thankyou so much!

    Hi guys,
I've got exactly the same problem - and, you're not alone - there are lots of people out there with nForce4 boards and SATA-II drives that do not work in SATA-II mode.   I just built a new system using the Neo4 Platinum, Athlon 64 X2, and a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250 GB SATA-II drive.  I've talked to MSI and Maxtor, both of wich have no solution for this particular problem.
The Maxtor drive will only work in SATA-I mode (1.5Gb/s) by manually changing the "J4" jumper.  Otherwise, the system locks when running in SATA-II mode.  I have the system running fine at SATA-I.  I was able to install Windows XP, and everything runs great -- except for the SATA-II mode.
On the Maxtor site (https://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/popup_adp.php?p_faqid=2685&p_created=1136595488) Maxtor acknowledges a problem with nForce 4 and Maxtor drives.
This same issue occurred with some previous drives, which a firmware update corrected this issue.  However, with the drive I have, it has the latest firmware according to Maxtor support.  I'm still waiting for a solution to this one... Perhaps is simply a matter of a BIOS and/or driver update from NVIDIA.  I've read that some figure it's a problem with NCQ... but, there is no solution - yet.  I'll keep you posted if I find out any more.
    Good luck!

  • System on USB SSD, user data on internal drive?

I have an iMac with a 1TB internal spinning disk at home, and the same system at work except it has an internal SSD. The SSD system is unsurprisingly much more responsive and it's increasingly painful to use the machine with the spinning disk.  I looked into replacing the internal drive with an SSD but it is cost prohibitive, both to buy the drive and have it installed (I considered doing it myself but the how to video is beyond my skill level). So I started to see if there are other options. I have between 500 GB and 700 GB or user data, much of which is my iPhoto and iTunes libraries.
One idea I had was to either (a) buy a small external solid-state drive and hook it up via USB or Thunderbolt, and install the system on that, but have my user folder (or possibly even just my iTunes and iPhoto libraries) on the internal drive.
Another idea is to buy a giant USB key (128 GB?) and install the system on that, and just leave it mounted all the time.
Other than the fact that I'd have my data spread across two disks, are there reasons why this is a bad idea?  And does anyone have any insight into whether or not it would improve performance noticeably?

Stick to Thunderbolt. It is faster than USB 3.0 in actual use. Seagate sells a small Thunderbolt adaptor - Seagate STAE133 Ext.
I can recommend the OCZ Vertex 3 series or the OWC Mercury 6G series. The former can be purchased from many different vendors like Newegg.com. For best performance you want to enable TRIM using Trim Enabler 3.2.2.
