G4 powerbook 1.3ghz  AHT 2.0.2 ?

i just bought a powerbook g4 12 " (1.3 ghz)but it didnt come with any of its documentation or cd;s is there anyway i can get AHT 2.0.2 so i can check and see if everything works properly ??

The Apple hardware test is only available on the original OS X CD's that shipped with the system. While you can check with Apple support at the 800 number, they have been going out of stock on the Powerbook disks for some time, and it's unlikely there are any still available from Apple.  You can try to find a used set, however, if you do this, ensure they are an OS X set specifically for your model, as the gray-faced disks are locked to the system type they ship with.
An alternative would be to buy TechTool Pro, which can test the hardware and do other functions.  The vendor website is at http://www.micromat.com/techtoolpro .

  • Powerbook is freezing, AHT?

    Hello,
my Powerbook 12" 867MHz often freezes after some time. I don't have the Apple Hardware Test CD any more. Can anyone help me with that? I think it needs AHT v. 2.0.2, 2.0.5, 2.0.6 or 2.5.2.
    Thanks

    Thank you for your answer.
I downloaded the image for the 867MHz Powerbook G4 from that link(AHT v. 1.2.3) and burned it. But my Powerbook won't start from the CD, it just continues the OS X startup. Then I looked it up at Mactracker, which says that it requires AHT v. 2.0.2, 2.0.5, 2.0.6 or 2.5.2. Maybe the 12" Powerbook G4 works with a different version of Hardware Test than the 15" and the image on that link is only for the 15" model. I checked my Original OS X DVD, but it contains only the system software, no Hardware Test. As far as I can remember the AHT was shipped on a separate CD, but I don't have it any more.

  • Powerbook G4 1.3Ghz problems

I have a second hand 17" Powerbook 1.33GHz G4 with a couple of problems I hope someone here can help me with.
    1. I can not get the internal speakers to function. I can get sound if I use headphones or external speakers. Also the "preferencepanes" is missing from the
       the lbrary.
    2. When using Quicktime, the video is very "jeky" (it does not run smoothly).
    3. The system appears to take a long time to boot.
Other than these three things the notebook runs perfect.
As I said the system is 17" Powerbook 1.3GHz, with 1Gb RAM, running OS X (Version 10.5.8) . I don't want to purchase extra RAM or a new battery for it yet until I am sure I can get the notebook functioning correctly before I give it to my wife.
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks.

    1. If there's a red light inside the headphone port, the analog/digital switch in there is stuck in the digital position and needs to be unstuck by inserting a headphone plug and wiggling it around as you pull it out again. When the red light disappears, your speakers should work again. If there's no red light in the port now, there may be something wrong with the speakers.
    2. Your seven-year-old Powerbook has a seven-year-old GPU in it that is primitive by current standards. It won't perform well with any streaming video from the web and may not perform very well even with video that is stored on its own hard drive.
    3. How long is a long time? And have you checked to make sure the intenal hard drive is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences? If it isn't, select it and see whether that makes the machine start up faster.

  • Apple HD Display 23"

Purchased a new PowerBook G4 thrree months ago. When connected to mey older Apple Cinema Display (in perspex) the graphics were terrible. Thinking this was a problem with the screen, I purchased a new Apple HD Display 23", but it's still the same. The image on the laptop is excellent - the one on the cinema screen is badly pixelated - looking more as though it's showing in thousands rather than millions of colours. Have done everything possible with Display Settings/Preferences but to no avail. Is there any explanation for this?
    Thanks
    Andrew

    Andrew,
I connected my PowerBook (1.3GHz, 12-inch, purchased SEP2004) to my 23-inch LCD (purchased 5 days ago).
Perfect graphics. I was concerned that the video "card" in the PowerBook would have trouble "expanding" from 12 to 23 inches, but it did not.
    Very impressive.
Actually, the video drove both the PB display and the 23-inch simultaneously.

  • No audio playback QT 7.0.4

I really need help from you wizards...
I've just upgraded QT to 7.0.4 and have lost all mp3 audio playback. I was on QT 6.5.2 running under OSX 10.3.9 (refuse to upgrade to Tiger cos of compatibility issues). It also does not playback audio on some video files with AAC audio MPEG-1 muxed files are no problem).
I've tried rolling back to 7.0.1 with no luck.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Scrapesuiter
Nope, I use Itunes to handle MP3 files and they play fine....I also checked the Audio Midi setup. I've rolled back my version to 6.5.2 and everything is hunky dory...It could be a system issue that would require a clean install. When I get time I may just do this.
Thanks for your help anyway. Nice to know help is out there.

  • Anyone know what a "script locking feature" is?

Not sure this is the right area for this but...
I've been trying access the setup interface on a Belkin Wirelsss router (F5D7230-4) to enable some sort of security. Everytime I tried to access the interface, which should be visible at 192.168.2.1 I got nowhere. Then I noticed Belkin had a free tech support line and decided to give them a ring.
The guy I spoke to told me that my OS (10.4) had certain features that barred access to the web setup interface and that I need to contact Apple to get the 'script locking feature' turned off on my mac. He couldn't tell me much else when questioned - or why other similar interfaces were accessible (my Netgear DSL modem for example).
Does anyone know anything about this feature? (Does it have anything to do with Apple script??) And how can it be disabled?
    Thanks in advance.

  • PowerBook G4 17in 1.3ghz won't turn on

My Powerbook won't turn on. Before that it was being slow waking up from sleep. I was using it and it frozed, had to force shut down, then it frozed while loading osx and I had to force shut down. After that it won't start. Sometimes I have been able to hear the chime, a couple of times it started up and gor frozed in the login window but most of the times it won't start at all. I changed the ram and nothing happened. The caps key light can be turn on/off. I read about leaving it charging without the battery to charge the backup battery and nothing. The power cord is in green light. Please help I need to work

    Hi n,
    You wrote,
I would just get it replaced. The PRAM battery is not that expensive and should resolve the problem you are having.
The only new PRAM batts for PowerBooks are for the 1.67ghz 17-inch models:
Newer Technology Replacement PRAM/clock battery for PowerBook G4 17" Aluminum 1.67GHz systems
    The OP has a 1.33Ghz
In addition, the battery installation takes a fairly deep teardown that's beyond the typical user. A casual recommendation to replace the battery is not always appropriate unless you probe enough to determine the OP's comfort of opening up a notebook full of tightly-packed tiny parts.
I think he is saying the PRAM battery might be dead.
I, like japamac, don't need a translator. Please don't do this. You did it in the past, were cautioned, and stopped; please stay with "stopped."

  • My PowerBook Troubles or How I Learned To Always Purchase AppleCare

I bought my PowerBook G4 1.67GHz (W85...) on 13 June 2005. According to the production info I get in Temperature Monitor (http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html) it was built on the "Week of 4/16/05 [at] Quanta Computer [in] Shanghai, China."
My experience with Apple hardware had been that it just won't die. All the systems I'd purchased had either been resold at a wonderful depreciation rate, handed down or grudgingly disposed of. I’ve even accepted some unwanted systems for fun projects and ended up having to find them a new home. Hence, although my PowerBook’s price tag had more in common with two-wheeled fun in the Florida sun than the previous computer systems I’d purchased, I decided the extra $300++ for AppleCare was unnecessary insurance.
About a year and a half after its purchase the screen started flashing a pixel-wide magenta line from top to bottom -- three inches from the left edge. I was hoping it was some freak software issue but eventually the line was permanent. When I searched the web for similar cases I found a handful of other users who, like me, assumed responsibility and were looking to replace the screen. More lines gradually appeared and I decided to wait until it got much worse before parting with the PowerBook and $600 for repairs.
At 11 lines I was ready to get the screen swapped and was going to have the optical drive upgraded on the same trip to put a positive spin on things. The week before I was to ship it away my PowerBook developed a case of narcolepsy. It’d go into sleep mode while I was working on it and sometimes I’d have to remove the battery and reset the power management unit to awaken it. I wondered if the deteriorating screen was causing some kind of hardware glitch. Unfortunately I found many others who experienced the same problem and it’d been tracked back to a faulty temperature sensor by the trackpad. This is when I learned of the Temperature Monitor software I mentioned above. With it I was able to determine that my trackpad heat sensor was responsible for sending emergency sleep signals to the system.
The symptoms of narcolepsy have since disappeared. The trackpad sensor has registered a static 48.2F for a couple of weeks. However, others have reported periods of remission before the narcolepsy reappears. This leaves me in a position where I can pay to have my screen replaced but I may once again lose all functionality to narcolepsy. Many customers with AppleCare who have been able to demonstrate the narcolepsy to service professionals have had their logic board -- possibly unnecessary -- and top case replaced. That is something I’m not willing to do on my dime because at that point I’ve practically rebuilt the PowerBook and hard drives are one of those things that don’t get better with time.
Now I find that the screen issues are also widespread and affect an even more specific subsection of PowerBooks. I’m not one to noisily demand a recall but my experiences with my PowerBook have left me wondering if I’m the stereotypical Mac user overpaying for commodity hardware. At this point I’d be happy to settle for being permitted to purchase AppleCare past the initial year of purchase.
I attempted as much yesterday by calling the number listed at http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html. I spoke to a lady at AppleCare and asked to be added to any tally of PowerBook W8 screen problems. She was sympathetic and forwarded me to PowerBook support to see if there was anything that they could do for me. The technical support representative said her name was Alice or Alex and she was friendly and pleasant sounding. I gave her my details and mentioned that at the very least I’d like to be added to a list with a case number or be granted permission to retroactively purchase AppleCare. She gave me standard information on the validity of AppleCare purchased after the machine. I let her know I was aware that I was asking for special consideration. She told me that if she could put me on hold she would speak to someone with authority who could make that decision. I let her know how much I appreciated that and she told me I’d be on hold for five minutes.
After waiting on hold for five minutes the line went dead. When I called back I got the after business hours message. I’ll withhold any cynicism but I do intend to call back today and resume where I left off.

  • Missing letter Q on my Powerbook (previously listed in OS9 group in error)

I have a Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz 512 MB DDR SDRAM running 10.4.6 In the past couple of weeks the lower case Q has stopped working -as you can see I can use the upper case Q but lower case results in a "bong". Spell checker will correct any misspelt words so the system still recognises the letter. This is affecting all programmes (e.g. Word for Mac, Safari, Mail) but I can still use control Q (in lower case) to Quit a programme. Keyboard viewer indicates that lower case Q is assigned to the correct key. If I change my keyboard layout from British to say, U.S. or Australian I have the same problem, but if I log into my wife's desktop all letters work normally. Also if I press Alt Q (lower case) I get "œ" so the hardware is clearly OK. Any suggestions would be much appreciated

  • Can I use the start up discs for my Powerbook to install 10.4 on my iMac?

Hi, I just bought a used Powerbook G4 1.67GHz and wanted to use the start-up discs with OS 10.4.2 that came with the Powerbook on my older iMac G4 800MHz. What I really want to do is wipe the hard drive clean on my older iMac and then reinstall OS 10.4.2 and associated programs from the discs that came with the Powerbook. Will this work? I do not want to wipe everything off of the older iMac and then realize that these discs will not work on the older machine. There are two discs that say PowerBook G4 15-inch and 17-inch Mac OS X Install Discs version 10.4.2 AHT version 2.5.2 Disc version 1.0

  • Install mac os tiger on powerbook g4

    Hi all
I have just received a 'old' powerbook g4 without harddrive. After I have installed a ned harddrive , it was ready for test. But what ever key I press (with the install dvd in the drive), the only screen to come up, was a blue one with to small faces in the middle. If I then pressed option key, a screen with a lock (locked) and password field appeared on the screen.
    What is wrong?
And how can I install Mac os (is my cd broke).

  • PowerBook G4 With New Hard Drive - Can't boot from 10.2 OS Install Disk

My sister's hard drive died so I bought and installed a new Seagate 160GB drive. She has OS 10.2 OS disks but is not sure if they were for this computer. The fact that the computer is copyright 2004, and the disks 2002 makes me wonder. When I try to boot with the 10.2 disk, I never see the drive icon when I'm booting up. Holding keys results in:
Option - Return Arrow and Next Arrow, no drive icons
T - With attached USB DVD drive - only get the strange floating Y with the circle in the middle
None - just the folder and ?
    I've also reset the PRAM.
Are these the right disks? If so, is there something else I need to do to have the computer recognize the CD when booting up?
The disks are white with the Jaguar(?) spotted X. The only text on them say Mac OS X v10.2/Install disk 1; Not for Resale; Version 10.2/2Z691-3706-A; the Mac and Apple logos and the copyright 2002 notice.

    Hi, kjfrey55 -
Typically the OS version that a machine originally shipped with is the minimum OS version it can use.
Based on info from the s/n you gave, your machine is a PowerBook G4 (15 inch) model, with an estimated ship date of Aug '04.
That model originally shipped with OSX 10.3.3. It can not use OSX 10.2.
It can use a retail OSX Panther disk set provided that the version on it is OSX 10.3.4 or higher (if those exist).
It can also use a retail OSX 10.4 (Tiger) disk set.
You may be able to get a replacement original disk set for it from Apple's Customer Service -

  • Help! - how to complete hardware test on newly purchased Powerbook

    Hi All,
I am taking delivery of a 1.25Ghz 15" Powerbook tomorrow after a successful bid on a local online auction. As part of the terms of sale the PB is sold with "no operating system installed/hard drive formatted" and the PB is warranted to be in working order, although under the sale terms I have 5 days from delivery to return it if it is not in full working order.
I have purchased a retail version of OSX Tiger and plan to immediately install it onto the PB after running Disk Utility to "zero" the hard drive. After telephoning Applecare this week they are sending me the Apple Hardware Test disk for this model PB although unfortunately they advised that it may take up to 3 weeks for delivery (well outside the 5 day window I have to check the condition of the PB).
Outside of taking the PB to my local Apple Service Centre, can anyone recommend alternative diagnostic software or procedures I could carry out to check that this PB is in full working order before the expiry of the 5 day no return period?

    1bogdan:
Congratulations! You have just gotten yourself a good computer.
Tech Tool Pro is a suite of diagnostic and repair utilities. It does Hardware Tests among other things. It seems that 5 days to check things out is a very short time.
That said, unless there are serious hardware issues, even Apple Hardware Test does not always pick it up right on the first or second or third run. You main concerns with this computer are:
    1. hard disk drive - if there is a problem here you likely will not be able to successfully install and or run the 'Book.
    2. Logic board - this may not show up right away, and AHT sometimes has difficulty picking it up.
After formatting and installing, I suggest you run Repair Disk in Disk Utilities.
Here is a suggested procedure for getting started with reformat, zero all data and re-install:
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! Be sure you have a tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select the a volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install X11 (optional).
    Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
    After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    Connect to Internet.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (PPC)
    Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Please do post back with an update or further questions.
    Good luck.

  • Overheating powerbook

my powerbook is getting very very hot very quickly- within a few minutes of starting up. Im guessing that there is a problem with the fan. I recently had my harddrive replaced and was wondering if the refitting of this might have affected the fan?

First thing to check is what is running on your system when it gets hot. On your hard drive, in applications/utilities, run the activity monitor. Is something using 20%-100% of your CPU? If yes, that's causing your heat problem.
If you want to check the operation of the fan, run the Apple hardware test. Insert your OS X DVD that came with your system, which will say AHT Version x.x in small print, and reboot holding the option key. Choose Apple hardware test and follow directions. It will test the fans, and you should hear fan noise during the test.

  • Powerbook freezes at grey screen on startup

I have a 3+ year old Powerbook running 10.4.9 that won't go past the grey apple screen on startup. It pretty much spins indefinitely. I thought it might be a failing hard drive, but I'm not sure after the tests I've done. The drive is 80GB (74.53 GB capacity), with 7.99 GB available space. The drive itself is not as old as the laptop; it was replaced by Apple about a year ago. I have tried the following (with restart attempts in between):
    *Zap PRAM
    *Reset PMU
*Start up in safe mode (works normally, as far as safe mode is concerned)
*Ran AHT, found bad RAM module, removed module, ran AHT twice and found no other errors
*Startup in single user mode, run fsck, volume "appears to be OK"
*Attach to another PPC 10.4 machine to try to do a backup of files (mounts, works for a while, then crashes the "target" machine (iMac G5 20" 10.4.9))
*Tried to backup to iMac w/drag and drop, migration assistant (both firewire) and via direct Ethernet connection. Always works for a bit then crashes, forcing a manual shut down of iMac
*Startup from external FW drive w/OS X, ran Disk Utility, no problems found on internal HD
*Startup in open firmware, reset NVRAM
    *Ran DiskWarrior 4.0, rebuilt directory
    *S.M.A.R.T. status is normal/verified
Any suggestions, ideas would be much appreciated. I am really at a loss and very much want to fix this. Thank you.
