G4 (Quicksilver) Tower Speaker

Even though I've had my G4 for a while now, I was just curious as to why the speaker in the tower has never worked with the (included in purchase) external speakers connected? I remember my old Performa's tower speaker used to work with external speakers connected...which kind of gave me a 3-way computer speaker system at the time. The tower speaker also gave me more bass with music and movies. Does anyone have a clue as to why the tower speaker in the G4 will not work with my current configuration? Thanks for listening....

Hi, Labrynth51!
Welcome to the Discussions!
Your Mac was designed this way. OS X will output to one or the other, but not both at the same time. There's nothing wrong with the Mac, if perhaps you are concerned that maybe there is. If you look at your Sound Pane of System Preferences, you'll see that you can select one output or the other, but not both.
Hope this clears things up a bit.

  • I did it....Old Quicksilver Tower 800 Meg.  with new CPU

I have a old Quicksilver tower which was 800 Megahertz...I put in the OWC chip in it some months ago which upgraded it to 2 gigahertz...I have a 40gig HD. That is the biggest problem. With this software you need at least 80 gigs. However, I had to ease the drive and reformat it, but it works. I don't have a dvd drive in this old rig so I used a Macbook laptop and firewire connected it-laptop was the target drive and it installed. I could have taken a long nap....but I was to anxious to see if it would fail...It is really nice!

I didn't even know they made 2 GHz G4s. It's cool you got it working though

  • Can I fit an 800mhz processor in a 400mhz G4 tower?

Hi, I've got a 400mhz G4 tower (10Gb HD) and I've got an 800mhz processor from a Quicksilver tower left over after the latter was upgraded with a Sonnet 1.8 dual processor. Can I upgrade the 400 with the redundant processor?
    Cheers for any tips/advice.
    Kev.

    Hi
Unfortunately you can't, at least not easily...
Firstly in the earlier G4s the processor socket is in a different location on the logic board. Consequently the larger Quicksilver CPU daughter card will interfere with the optical drive ATA connector on the logic board.
Secondly because the Quicksilvers have a 133MHz system bus, the bus multipler on the CPU card will be set to 6 (6 * 133.33MHz = 800MHz). When installed in an earlier G4 with a 100MHz system bus, this will cause the processsor to run at 600MHz. you could increase the bus multiplier to 8, but this involves adding and/or removing small resistors on the CPU card.
Thirdly the Quicksilver CPU cards require a 12 volt feed to the fourth mounting screw. This isn't too difficult in itself though as it can be taken from a spare hard drive molex power connector.

  • No Audio - External Speakers - Running VISTA x64 Ultimate

I have seen numerous references to this problem in the forum archives... but no solutions yet.
I run Vista x64 Ultimate natively on the Mac Pro - no VMware or other emulation software.
Everything works great EXCEPT audio: I have searched and searched and need an expert.
All OSX, Firmware, and Bootcamp drivers are up to date.
Realtek Audio doesn't not recognize the rear external audio port. I plugged in / out / in etc., nothing. All audio comes from the internal tower speaker.
My speakers use the standard analog jack, they are new Bose MusicMonitor speakers.
    Things I have done:
Vista Audio Settings - all ok, all set to max, double checked - nothing.
New Realtek Audio Drivers - tried installing newer version - nothing.
    Reinstalled Bootcamp Drivers - nothing.
Reinstalled Bootcamp Drivers (original disk) + Bootcamp Vista Drivers (new release) - nothing.
BTW - the speakers work just great under OSX - they produce awesome sound - so it's not a hardware issue.
Thanks - I hoping someone has discovered a solution!

    P.S. I have the X-Fi Platinum.
I left that out in my original post.

  • How to reinstall OS without a functioning CD Drive

I just got a Quicksilver tower and I sloppily copied my laptop's system into the Tower's. Now it won't start up (giving me the system folder with question mark icon). Problem is, the cd drive on the tower isn't working. I took it apart and the gears just aren't cooperating. I forced it open and shoved the OS DVD into it, but it won't read it when I hold 'c' down while it restarts.
I do have an external CD drive, but it doesn't read DVD's.
I tried connecting the Quicksilver to my laptop using firewire (target disk mode) hoping I could choose the tower's HD as the install drive, but the tower isn't connecting.... I'm guessing because it's doesn't have the proper system information.
What in the world can I do?
    Thanks for any help,
    -Clayton

    Clayton,
Spend the £20 it will cost you to get a new internal DVD drive, preferably one that the Mac OS supports and that you can burn CD / DVD on.
The pain and suffering this will save you over the lifetime of the G4 tower is worth it, believe me.

  • Trouble Syncing iPhone

I have been having trouble lately syncing my iPhone with my iTunes. I have synced several times before to the iTunes on this computer (mac G4). But lately it either just does not see my iPhone, or if it does, it gives me a "device Time out" error. I tried to "restore To Original Settings" as well, but to no avail. Any ideas what I should do? Anybody else have the same issue?

having the same issue. I've synced it plenty of times, but I often get the time out warning or have to force quit Itunes after it hangs on docking the phone. Today after multiple reboots I still could not get iTunes to recognize the phone though it has in the past...
I too use a g4 quicksilver tower. I think we have older usb ports and not usb2. could this be the issue? As i said, ive synced it lots of times in the past, but its unreliable. so if the usb ports are the reason...its not 100% incompatible. very strange. Probabably buying a new mac when the new os is released, but this has been an annoying issue for me since June29th that Id like to understand and resolve...

  • KVM Recommendation?

    Hello everyone,
I've checked the many questions and posts on KVM switches, but none seem to address my variables, so I'm hoping someone can provide some recommendations, or confirm that I can't do what I'd like to do.
I have two primary macs, and a couple of other older models that I use for utility purposes every once in a while. I would like to find a KVM switch that can support at least the two primary machines. Here are the specifics:
My monitor is a 23" Apple Cinema Display.
    Computer 1 is a new (October 2008) MacBook 2.4GHz (laptop) ( I also have the mini-DVI adapter).
Computer 2 is an older PowerMac G4 QuickSilver (tower)
Keyboard and mouse are the Bluetooth wireless models from Apple. I use a DLink bluetooth wireless adapter DBT-120.
I would like to be able to more easily connect the laptop to use the Apple Cinema display and wireless keyboard/mouse, without having to unplug everything from the back of the QuickSilver and reconnecting it to the laptop.
Do any of you know if there any KVM switches and "laptop hubs" or "port replicators" that can support this mix of hardware?
    Thanks!!
    Kevin

Did you ever find a solution?
    i'm in the same boat.
i was looking at: http://www.belkin.com/flip/ as an option, but not sure if that would work.
    anyone?

  • IMac - 1TB HD Option?

I am going to order a new 24" iMac to replace my seven year old Quicksilver tower. I like the idea of ordering the largest HD possible; the 1TB option. Any opinions on this? Could heat be an issue? Noise? Are those drives reliable in the iMac at this point or is it too soon to consider that size option in an iMac? Seems this is a fairly new option... not sure I want to be one of the first unless the jury is in on these. Any/all opinions appreciated.

1 TB hard drives have been available for at least 6 months in the general market. I would always backup my data just in case of failure*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
And definitely consider purchasing AppleCare so that any obvious hardware failure not caused by you is covered for the period of AppleCare's coverage.

  • Anybody seen this error message?

I recently replaced the internal HD on my G4 Quicksilver tower and get this error message when I dock my iPod (40GB with click wheel):
"The system extension /System/Library/Extensions/iPodDriver.kext/Contents/Plugins/iPodFireWireTranspo rtSupport.kext was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update."
    Things I've tried:
1.) Updated iPod software and iTunes.
2.) Deleted the extension from the Library. I dragged it to the trash, but it didn't actually delete. The next time I fired up iTunes I didn't get the error message, but I have ever since.
This error is more of an annoyance and doesn't seem to affect the docking process and the transfer of music from iTunes to my iPod.
    But still.
Anybody have a similar problem and a solution. Thanks in advance

You should certainly be alarmed.  Well, sorta actually this might prevent you from making any changes, but other than that you should be fine, but fix it.  Is there a dump file created?  Are there any other processes going down?

  • Dual PowerMac G4 or Core Duo Intel Mac Mini?

Right now I have a Intel Core Duo Mac mini. I have the following setup and specs on my desk. The mini contains the Duo 1.66GHz processor, 2GB DDR SDRam, 80GB hard drive, OS X & Windows XP, AirPort +Bluetooth, and so on. My problem is that I have always been a tower lover and that is why I purchased the Mac mini because I purchased a 20.1 widescreen HD Dell LCD with DVI-D, VGA, Component, and so on imputs. I wanted this for my Xbox 360 also.
Here is where it starts to get complicated. I also have four, yes four, external hard drives sitting on my desk, and I still need more hard disc space. I have a 250GB, 120GB, 250GB, and 60GB. Plus remember I have a 80GB in the mini. I am also looking into another 250GB or 500GB external hard drive.
Now before I had the mini, I had the original iMac G5 which had a 1.6GHz PowerPC G5 processor in it, 160GB hard drive, and 1.5GB of ram. It was showing age and I needed more speed and a bigger display so I ditched it for the Intel Mac mini.
In addition I am pulling 12 USB ports out the back of my Mac mini. I have a few hubs fulling almost all the ports. I need these for the external hard drives. If I go internal, I can probably live with 6-8 USB 2.0 ports. I will need at least 1 firewire or an iSight camera or my Sony HD handycam, but USB is more needed. In addition I see some PowerMac G4's came with Firewire 800? Is this something I would need, I currently however have no use for it.
But now I really see the need of a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver tower. I was looking into the Dual 1.42GHz PowerPC G4 models, and really don't know which is faster. I would obviously love the expandability of the PCI cards, and independed graphics memory, but am I willing to transition back to PowerPC after moving over the Intel?
I don't know so I am posting it all here in the PowerMac G4 section of the Apple forums. I really hope I can get some good advice here. By the way, I am very Apple and technology frantic, so I know the ins and outs of a tower and stuff like that. So a non Apple warrenty would probably not be a problem.
But one problem is, how much could I get for my Mini which cost me $1099 and how much would a decent G4 tower cost me? I have an extra Nvideo GeForce 4 MX 5400 Ultra with 64MB of ram and DVD-D/ VGA outputs, so that isn't a problem. Plus to replace the AirPort Extreme built into the mini, I have a AirLink 101 Super G (108MBPS) Wireless PCI card. Bluetooth can be added with a simple USB dongle.
UPDATE: Forgot the mention I already have a DVD Burner compatible with OS X and 3.5inch bays. I would like a Dual Layer, but if its a tower, I can upgrade that anytime.
UPDATE x2: I would also like to mention that I use Gigabit Ethernet so any PowerMac model I choose would have to acomidate that such as the Intel Mac mini does.
    THANKS EVERYONE!!!!
    Mac Mini 1.67GHz Intel Core Duo, 2GB ram, 1.5TB storage, OS X v.10.4.6, 30GB iPo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I would like one day to have a tower with 4-8 HD drives
(120-250GB each) and HD DVD and Blue-Ray burners.
Good luck Even the Dell towers we have at work have space for 3 HDs, and thats only of you give up one of the CD bays.
Honestly, I unless a blueray player ships in the CPU, I would get a PS3. 1/2 the cost of a standalone blu-ray player, and a game system too
Expected street prices from Sony and Toshiba web sites:
    standalone Sony blueray player: 995.
    Toshiba HD-DVD: 599
    Sony PS3 w/ bluray: 499/599
Is the reason the PowerPC G4 can't handle HD DVD is
processor speed or what? Cause there is always
processor upgrade cards up to 1.8GHz and 2.0GHz Dual.
    Thanks.
One of the Apple support pages says you must have a G5...
does not give the background behind it.
On a G4, the OS will not allow HDDVD playback (as HD is defined by FinalCutHD) via the DVD player, BUT it will play back HD video clips (like QT trailers)
On my 867, 720i clips played back w/o a problem, but 1080 would freeze for 20 seconds at a time, (while audio continued normally)
on my Dual 1.42, I have no problems with 1080.
I hesitate to consider or recommend processor upgrade cards b/c for some, the price approaches the cost of a new machine w/o the benefits of faster busses, etc, and, right on the side of the OS X box, it says processor upgrade cards not supported. I would hate to upgrade the OS to find it refused to support my machine.

  • How to reinstall 9.2.2 on PowerMac G4?

    Hello all,
The hard drive in our PowerMac G4 Quicksilver tower died and I am in the process of trying to reinstall 9.2.2 and OSX onto a brand new drive because some applications that we need use Classic.
I've performed the hardware test using the CD that came with the machine (everything checks out), and pulled out all the RAM except for one stick. All non-essential peripherals have been removed. I've even tried pushing the CUDA button.
I can partition the new drive and install OSX (Panther), but I am having no success using the original software restore grey discs that came with the G4. It gets all the way through the 9.2 install and then hangs when it reaches OSX. Any subsequent attempts gives the grey screen and refuses to boot from the CD.
Wiping the drive and trying the restore disks without Panther on the new drive also results in the machine hanging on the grey screen and refusing to boot from the CD.
Does anyone know how I might be able to get Classic to work on this machine?
    Thanks!

I have a PowerMac G4 Digital Audio and recently I've already tried to restore OS9. I found some issues as well, they can have some relation with the one you have. Maybe someone has already seen either symptoms.
My original OS CD installs OS 9.1. Then I can upgrade it to 9.2.1. Fine until this point.
When I try to upgrade it to 9.2.2, it reports something about HD OS9 drivers that have been fixed and then it continues up to about 90% of progression bar. Then it stops showing in a dialog box that the "Big System Morsels" could not be installed.
During one of the trials, I've seen a message saying that it didn't recognize Apple firmware in the Hard Drive (??) !

  • Imac/Lion power down instead of sleep

My new iMac powers down after sleeping. 2 Hours of sleuthing with Applecare is unable to find the problem. There have been no power outages, the energy saver has no scheduled power cycling, we've reset the parameter RAM, and many other checks and tests.
It behaved most of yesterday after I removed the wireless keyboard from the room. But, in the middle of the night,
I found it powered off again.
This morning, it was powering down (instead of sleeping) again about half the time. I let it sleep by energy saver timeout, not the power button.
Then I switched to a different user (only used for remote sharing). All day today, sleep has worked with no power downs - about 10 hrs so far.
Have any of you experienced any misbehavior like this? How did you stop the power downs? Clues?
    Thanks, Tony

I havent' connected them because I suspect that the old monitor was causing the problem. I plug in the hard drives only as I need them but don't leave them on. It's only been four days now but I haven't had the powering off issue since I unplugged everything. I may buy a new second monitor as the one I was using was from  an old Mac Quicksilver Tower and needed a specialized adapter to work.I seem to remeber there is also a setting somewhere in prefernces that allows you to use the power button to put the iMac to sleep. I think i also uchecked that option in addition to unplugging everything.
    Good Luck!

  • Cheapest video card for dual monitors on a G4 Sawtooth

    Hi guys,
What would be my cheapest alternative to get a dual monitor (extended desktop) environnement with my G4 Sawtooth. This is an AGP G4.
Can I get a cheap video card with one outlet and then plus each monitor in one card (ie: 1 in the new card and 1 in the old one) ?
Or do I need to buy a card that supports 2 monitors?
I would like to spend as little as possible. I currently have the ATI 16 mb card that came with the system and I run both OS 9.2.2 and OS 10.3.9
    Thans for your advice,
    xenakis

Yesterday I installed a nVidia GeForce4 MX AGP out of a 2002 Quicksilver tower into my own AGP Sawtooth.
It has VGA and ADC connections and can apparently support two monitors at the same time.
My second vidio card is a MPDD card, but I may pull that now that I have a dual-monitor card. Sonnet sells something similar. They have blue & yellow connectors. These things are not high performance but they are OK to use with just about every monitor on the planet and any MacOS from 7.1 to 10.5 and beyond.
Cheap on eBay. Probably you could be even cheaper and pick up a 16-meg PCI card out of a B&W G3 tower.

  • Dying fan locking my CPU?

I have a Quicksilver tower that I have been using for 4 years now. I have been doing some maintenance on it in the last year in an effort to keep it alive. I replaced the powersupply earlier this year and that made it work just fine. But now it has an awful noise from the fan when I start it up. What's worse is that if I leave the computeer idle (even if I don't sometimes) it will lock up in 5 minutes or so. Could this have anything to do with the fan and how would I go about replacing it? It is the fan just above the hard drives in the lower back corner of the casing.
Thanks for any and all help.
    JOE

    Hi
If the main case fan isn't working correctly I guess it's possible the CPUs could over heat resulting in kernel panics or lock ups, although you'd expect it to happen more when they're under load rather than being idle. Have you tried using the computer with the side down temporarily to see whether the fan's sticking etc? Does the normal fan noise ever increase in volume? After my Quicksilvers been on a bit and things have heated up, the fans speed up to move more air, resulting in an audible change.
If you do need to replace it, removing the main case fan involves the following:
    1. Disconnect the fan power cable. There's a little rectangular black cable connector to the left of the fan casing with a locking tab on one end. By pressing the tab the fan power cable should be released.
    2. Remove the fan casing (and fan) from the computer. It's held in place by two screws on the metal flanges, one on the left hand side which also secures a cable holder and one on the bottom.
    3. Remove the fan from the casing. It's held in place by the four screws, one in each corner.
Original part replacement fans occassionally appear on eBay or are available from Apple part stockists. Alternatively you could try a generic fan, so long as it's the same physical size and moves a similar volume of air. You may also be able to find one that's quieter than the stock part.
    I hope this helps.
