Galileo v1 doesn't boot Windows or show in Galileo Watcher

Got my v1 board yesterday.
I took the 16gb card that came with it and provisioned with the Windows image as per the setup instructions.
I also have downloaded the Arduino IDE and updated the firmware (from 1.0.0 to 1.0.4). I am able to successfully execute the "Blink" script as they outline for a test.
When I connect the Galileo via USB to my computer, nothing happens but it gets mapped as a COM port. It doesn't show in watcher.
When I connect the ethernet to my PC w/ the supplied USB-Ethernet adapter, nothing happens. It doesn't show in Watcher and I also can't telnet in to it as indicated.
Please help.

Have you connected your Galileo to your network?  I am assuming that you followed the steps for "Connecting and booting Windows" at  "http://ms-iot.github.io/content/SetupGalileo.htm
NOTES:
1. It can take up to 2 minutes for the Galileo to appear in Galileo Watcher.  Do you see network activity from the Galileo itself?
2. With the USB to Network adapter, the USB plugs into your PC and the network plugs into the Galileo. It does not work to have the USB connected to the Galileo as Windows for Galileo connects to TCPIP through the built In Network connector on the Galileo
3. The network cable will also work without the USB adapter if you directly connect from the Galileo to your PC network card or a local hub connected to the same PC on the same subnet.
4. You can look up issues on MS Connect, the site where you downloaded the Galileo image, to see if other folks have hit your problem.

  • MacBook doesn't boot windows 7 (harddisk problem)

    hello,
a few weeks ago i replace my original harddrive by a grater one. i reinstalled osx and all looks fine. yesterday i tried to install windows with help of boot camp. i inserted the install dvd and the macbook boots and runs windows 7 setup. at the partition selection dialog there were no partitions at all. after a few reboots i was able to select my bootcamp partition but at the reboot during the windows setup the same problem. a few reboots later the installation has finished. i ejected the windows install dvd and now the black and white windows prompt tells me that there isn't any bootdrive. a few reboots later i was able to run windows and selected windows as the default startup volume in bootcamp. now the macbook shows me a flashing question mark at windows boot.
it feels like a efi driver problem for me. Anybody an idea how to solve this?

Perhaps it's useful to look which process is eating up all CPU time.
    From http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/performance.html
To determine if a specific process or application is impacting performance:
Open Activity Monitor (Leopard, Tiger, Panther®) or Process Viewer (Jaguar), >located in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.
In the Show pop-up menu in the toolbar of Activity Monitor or Process Viewer, >assure All Processes is selected.
Sort the list of processes by %CPU in descending order:
In Activity Monitor, click the %CPU column heading until the data in that column >is sorted in descending order.
In Process Viewer, click the %CPU column heading, then click the arrowhead at >the right side of the column headings until the %CPU column is sorted in >descending order.
The process or application using the greatest % CPU is now at the top of the >list.

  • Windows 8 showing me 2 Windows 8 OS to choose from after resolving a boot issue.

    Hi there,
I was having this issue earlier -
    https://imageshack.com/i/npr7usp
I just bought a Lenovo G400s Touch laptop with Win 8. Its C drive was around 450 Gb so I decided to divide it before putting my data and installing any other soft wares. I used EASEUS Partition Master tool to Resize my C drive to 100Gb. To complete the partition
I restarted the laptop but it got stuck on the recovery screen.
I’ve tried all 3 options on the screen but none working. One Ley Recovery feature is also not working.
What should I do get the system started again? I’ve nothing important on this laptop so no need to worry about data loss.
So I used the solution at this link - http://itsolutionsblog.net/solution-to-your-pc-needs-to-be-repaired/
and my above issue is resolved but, now I'm facing several other issues,
while booting Windows it shows me 2 options of windows to start PC. http://imageshack.com/a/img22/5184/jmvn.jpg
my system recovery is not working
I'm not able to create system recovery disk using option 'Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive'
And if I try to install Windows 8 using other bootable disk is gives error saying the 'entered Win key does not match with any of the win images'.
any help will be much appreciated...

  • Re-installed fresh Snow Leopard, Boot camp boots, but wont show on startup..

Ok, I had Boot Camp on my iMac with Snow Leopard fine. I decided to reinstall Snow Leopard fresh.
Chose the Mac HDD partition, it re-installed fine. I then thought I'd have to do the Boot Camp again, but I held don "alt" key and Boot Camp boots fine and works.
So I normally have the Boot Camp to boot 1st, as wife and kids use Windows. However I go into Boot Camp on Mac OS, and it doesn't show the boot camp startup disk. Where's it gone?
As I say everything is fine, apart from it now looks like its lost track of the Boot Camp partition.
Is there anyway I can get it back? I ran Boot Camp wizard on Mac, but it either wants to create a new Boot Camp partition, or run windows installer, both which I dont want.
    Any help please
    chers

Set the default startup disk in Windows.
There is no Boot Camp on Mac OS ("go into Boot Camp"?)
    Try:
    System Preferences / Startup Disk
On Windows, the Boot Camp Control Panel to used set the default OS
Wizard: by this assume Boot Camp Assistant, which is only a partitioning tool.
Boot Camp doesn't "boot," Windows boots.
Boot Camp - Assistant to create a partition
Boot Camp - Set of drivers and services
Boot Camp - Control panel in Windows to set default boot OS (Mac OS X volumes or Windows, with some other features for laptops I believe)
Personally, too many things use the same name and lead to misunderstandings.

  • Dual Boot, Windows doesn't boot.

    Hi there,
Firstly, I'd like to apologize in advance if this has already been answered somewhere, but I couldn't seem to find it anywhere.
Yesterday, I tried to dual boot Windows 7 on my iMac with the latest version of Lion. I used Bootcamp and everything went according to plan untill I had to install Windows. My Mac restarted and began to install Windows, but after a while of installing, the disc stopped running and everytime I heard it trying to get back running, it was stopped by a weird noise, as if something was grinding onto it.
This kept going for a minute or two, when I decided to turn it off, since nothing was happening. After that, I started my Mac again and after a white screen, the only thing it shows is a black screen with a little type cursor in the upper left corner. I've tried to reboot it many times but I can't do anything, if I take the disc out, the only thing I get is a white screen, it doesn't go back to the normal Apple logo.
If anyone has some tips on where i should go with this, it'd be greatly appreciated!

You need to delete the boot camp partition and start over. Use Book Camp Utility or Disk Utility to remove the partition.
What happened is when you installed Windows and it did not finish installing the OS and will keep trying to boot to that partition and finish. Until the OS install is finished the Mac is flagged to boot automatically to that partition. This is why you are seeing the black screen.

  • Mac doesn't boot after splitting BOOTCAMP drive under Windows 8.1

Macbook pro mid 2012, OS X Mavericks
I've installed Windows 8.1 x64 using Bootcamp assistant. In Windows I went to Disk Management and shrank drive C: from 200 GB to 94 GB and created a new drive D: from unallocated space.
After restart Windows doesn't boot giving some error and quickly restart. If I hold "Option" key I see only Windows. Mac OS X disappeared.
    How to fix?

So, I've tried 1001 ways to recover. Nothing worked. Interned Recovery gives -2002F error. Macbook pro 2012 can't boot from bootable DVD to use DiskWarrior, Drive Genius or similar. It can't boot from OS X Lion install DVD. I had only Windows PC to fix this. So
I asked a friend with latest Mavericks(which I had too) to make a Recovery USB and make a DMG file from it and send me over internet. Then I used the TransMac application under Windows and burned DMG on my USB stick. My god it worked. After 2 days of struggle I found this solution. I was able to boot from this USB stick into Recovery Mode and from there I can reinstall Mac Os X Mavericks. Somehow it sees my Ethernet cable and doesn't give error.
Note: that Disk Utility wasn't able to recover partitions. I tried to run DiskWarrior from terminal but it gave me an error. TestDisk didn't run too. So I'm doing a clean installation.
I could recover or backup my files using Paragon Mac Recovery Bootable DVD, but there was no need since it's my new macbook and I didn't have much files there.
Windows had changed the HD partition map from GUID Partition Table(GPD) to MBR. And made HD a "dynamic disk". This is why Mac Os wasn't able to boot.
If anyone knows how to convert a disk back to GPD and make Mac OS able to boot please let me know. I'm still installing Mac Os X on USB stick and didn't change my HD.

  • HP Stream 7-Windows 10 doesn't boot, I can't recovery 8.1 because can't boot from USB-HELP please!!

    Hi everybody, I'm new here!
I am (scuse me: WAS) enjoying a Stream 7
Some days ago I tried to install Windows 10 TP upgrading 8.1 with Bing. After some waiting time it succeeded, but unfortunately I forgave to put in the tablet's SSD the hp drivers, thinking they weren't necessary. So touchscreen, WiFi and all the other stuff didn't work. After I collegated via OTG a keyboard and a mouse I managed to use Windows 10.
Trying to install drivers, my fault, I opened an .exe of Realtek (maybe for the audio), tablet asked to reboot and after that I cannot access to Windows anymore.
I tried to boot Windows 8.1 from a USB, but it doesn't boot, the same even if i disable secure boot.
With disabled bitlocker Windows gives this error
In boot option I set these settings
I put the usb in this way:
The Stream doesn't consider the USB absolutely XD
If I enable again the secure boot Windows gives this error (that at 99% is caused by the .exe I installed):
Rebooting the Stream a couple of time with secure boot it goes in a menu (where touchscreen works) where there are a lot of options to reset Windows, but none of them works. If I try to format from this menu it asks for my account's password, but it doesn't accepts the mine :/
If I try to open the recovery (from volume minus button when it starts) it gives this message:
    Waiting for help,
    Thank you for your patience!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Hi everyone. I think I have found a solution to this problem. Short background story, I too tried to install Windows 10 (10049) via Windows Update but I was never successful - got stuck at around 30% for more than an hour. I tried to restore to 8.1 but it gave me that 0xc000000f error. Luckily I had made a recovery image to USB before updating to Windows 10.
Please note that by doing this method, you will obviously lose your data.
    Here's what you'll need:
    - Recovery USB (if you don't have one, grab it from this link and I thank you that person from another post). Follow the instructions, this is just basically clean, format to FAT32, set primary and active, and then drag and drop the files and folders from the USB folder to the root USB drive. This particular recovery is from a 5701 model, there is actually no difference between Stream 7 models in terms of hardware, but software is configured differently (different language setup/format) depending on the country/region it's sold.
    - OTG cable
    - Powered USB hub
    - USB Mouse and Keyboard
    - A moment of your time
    1. Plug in the OTG cable to the tablet, and then plug in the USB hub to power and to the OTG. After that, plug in the USB mouse and keyboard and Recovery USB to the USB hub.
    2. Boot the tablet to BIOS by holding down Power + Volume Down at the same time, until you reach the Startup Menu.
    3. Press F10 and navigate to System Configuration > Boot Options. In this menu, we'll have to restore the settings to default.
So if you have disabled Secure Boot, you first need to Clear All Secure Boot Keys and then Load HP Factory Default Keys. Then enable Secure Boot.
Make sure UEFI Boot Order is also default to as follows: OS boot Manager, USB Diskette, USB CD/DVD, Network Adapter.
If you did not make any changes, proceed to 4.
    4. Be prepared to go back to the Startup Menu, because as soon as you press F10 and hit Yes, the tablet will automatically restart. So press and hold the Volume Down button after you hit on Yes.
    5. Press F9 and select Boot From EFI File. If you've done the recovery image ghosting correctly onto the Recovery USB, you should see two entries. One should be RECOVERY and the other may depend (it could be SYSTEM or No label). Select RECOVERY, and then select bootmgr.efi.
At this point the tablet will boot off from the USB and will bring you to Windows Recovery.
    6. Select your keyboard layout, and navigate to Troubleshoot > Reset your PC.
If the drive partition/boot manager is not damaged, it will ask for a recovery key. You can actually skip this step and hide the numpad, revealing the option Skip this drive if you don't have the recovery key anymore, or just really want to start anew.
If the drive partition/boot manager is damaged, the Reset will proceed and will ask you to select a target operating system. In my case it was Windows 8.1.
    7. The next screen will be about Reset your PC telling you what's going to happen. Tap Yes > Yes, repartition the drives > Fully clean the drive > Reset.
The tablet will now do its thing and restore to factory default.
After restoration, a BIOS screen will come up asking if you want to clear the TPM keys. Select Yes, and this will create a new key for the restored installation, bringing you back to a fully factory default tablet.
    Notes:
I recommend not installing a generic Windows 8.1 ISO that is copied straight to the USB drive using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool or RUFUS. They won't be compressed or the same as WIMBOOT, which will take up more storage space than stock recovery.
You could actually install another version of Windows 8.1 on the tablet, assuming you know what you are doing (ie. making a WIMBOOT image).
You could also actually install Windows Technical Preview directly, again, assuming you know what you are doing.
This is just a guide to help you try recover your tablet from a failed Technical Preview installation. I hold no responsiblities over your actions.
What I recommend is that use 8.1 for now, and wait for the official release (or at least a more stable Technical Preview release for this tablet if you can't wait that long) of Windows 10.

  • Booting Windows 7 in Boot Camp shows a black screen with a blinking cursor

I am trying to restore a DMG image of a Windows 7 Boot Camp partition back to Boot Camp. (I know that I should have used Winclone, but I didn't have that option because the drive was already dying and so I couldn't even access OS X anymore.)
So far, I've gotten to the point where I can start up the computer, hold Option, choose Windows, but then when it boots up, it shows a black screen with a blinking cursor.
I've tried a few things so far to try and fix this, none of which has worked. I have used the Windows 7 install DVD to run `bootrec` and all its possible arguments. I've ran `chkdsk C: /b`. I've also used the "Automatically fix startup problems" button, of course, as well.
Anyone know what else I could try to fix this?

Already tried those steps. Did not work. I finally fixed the problem by using iPartition and running "Write MBR Boot Code" and then renaming the Windows 7 partition and hitting "Go". The latter step causes iPartition to fix any problems that might exist in the partition. After renaming it, I just renamed it back to what it was before. (It was "Windows 7", I renamed to "Windows 7-02", then renamed it back to "Windows 7" afterward.)

  • Windows doesn't boot after removing Ubuntu: grub black screen

I had Ubuntu and Windows installed in dual boot. I wanted to remove Ubuntu and, following suggestions online, I eliminated Ubuntu partitions. When I restarted PC I got this on black screen:
    "GNU GRUB version 2.02beta2-15
Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions.
    grub>_"
BIOS doesn't start so I can't boot from USB. I don't have factory image because I performed a clean installation when I installed Ubuntu and Windows.
    I need help, thanks.

    Hi,
as far as I know, Windows needs the bootableflag on it's systempartition - and sets this flag, in case it is not set - to boot up.
Actually, I don't know any way to prevent Windows from "touching" the MBR except a MBR-Lock (sometimes called "Boot-Virus-Protection") in BIOS - seems to be not possible on your configuration (Macbook -> EFI/GUID-MBR-Hybrid and not BIOS/MBR).
One way, to evade the drama of manually editing the MBR, would be letting the Windowsbootmanager load Grub.
1.) copy the grub-bootsector of your /boot partition to a file in your window-systempartition.
    dd if=/dev/sdX of=arch.lin bs=512 count=1
mount the windows system-partition and copy arch.lin to the root of the partition (C:\ ?)
    2.) adding a boot-entry to your windows-bootloader
boot windows, and add the line C:\arch.lin="arch" to the %SYSTEMROOT%\boot.ini
(this could probably also be done from linux while doing step 1)
3.) modify the windows-bootloader to fit your needs:
    a) change timeout=0 to timeout=15 (or something like this)
    b) let timeout=0 untouched and change the default to grub (so the boot-way should be: mbr -> windows-loader -> grub -> linux/win)
I am not 100% sure, if this works as intended. There are plenty of howtos on the internet dealing with the winbootloader -> grub stuff. maybe you should read one or two just to verify this.

  • Random I/O errors (hdd) and failing to boot, Windows not affected

I'm experiencing lots of I/O errors when booting and running my Linux partition. I am dual booting Windows 7 (x86_64) and Arch Linux (i686) on a single HDD.
Im using a Lenovo Ideapad G505s with a Seagate ST1000LM HDD and an SDD currently not in use.
    Partition layout:
    NAME FSTYPE LABEL UUID MOUNTPOINT
    sda
    ├─sda1 ntfs System Reserved D8B40750B4073094
    ├─sda2 ntfs 00EA107FEA107360
    └─sda3 ext3 b753e7d2-6a23-4c20-8fa7-bf281a4a09e4 /
    sr0
All three are primary partitions. Using ext4 yields the exact same result.
The problem is easy to reproduce:
Install Windows 7 to first half of HDD and Arch on the second half
At first Arch works fine but over the next couple of days increasingly more I/O errors show up and at some point the system fails to boot
Windows seems to work just fine

I don't recall when this error first showed up, and I unluckily deleted my journal before noticing the problem, for it was getting big, so I can't trace back. But I have it in the journal since then (11.september). At begining only from time to time, but now things are getting worse.

  • IBook G4 doesn't boot

    Hi,
I just bought a broken iBook G4 on eBay thinking I would be able to fix it without replacing the logic board. The iBook doesn't boot properly. When I press the power button, I can hear the SuperDrive start up, then the screen with the gray Apple shows up and the OS starts to load normally. But when that screen goes away and the blue background comes up, it just stops there... no "Loading Mac OS X" window with the progress bar. I figured that this may have been a deviation of the iBook G4 logic board problem where people used clamps to pin down the left side of the iBook and hold the faulty chip to the logic board, allowing the iBook to boot. I gave it a shot, but instead of using clamps I tried putting a small rubber shim on top of the faulty chip inside of the case to see if it would work. The first time I booted it up after I placed the shim, it worked fantastically. No hanging at the loading screen, no sluggish performance.
That was the way it worked for a couple of days. However, the booting problem soon returned. I tried booting from a Tiger reinstall disk to verify/repair the disk/permissions, but the iBook hung at the same blue screen. I didn't have the original install discs that came with the iBook, so I couldn't run a hardware test on it. I also tried booting from a Leopard install disk to no avail. Resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, and PMU did nothing as well. I even went so far as to replace the RAM in the expansion slot with RAM that I knew was working, but the iBook remained broken.
The strangest part of this was that the iBook worked perfectly on another computer when put into TDM. I was able to verify/repair both permissions and the disk from my Power Mac G5. Even though the iBook's screen becomes scrambled with random colors and lines after a few minutes in TDM, it functions just fine on another computer. I was even able to successfully boot my Power Mac and iMac from the iBook in TDM. Seeing as this was possible, I tried reinstalling Tiger on the iBook (in TDM) remotely from my Power Mac. It worked like a charm. Following that reinstall, I downloaded and installed all of the software updates. Then I tried to boot the iBook natively again, but to no avail. It still hung at that same blue screen.
At this point, I suspect that there is something wrong with the logic board that I am unable to fix without completely replacing the logic board itself. That's sort of disappointing, but I guess that's just the way it is. If anyone has any input to this, feel free to respond. Here are the iBook's specs:
    CPU: 1Ghz (1064Mhz)
RAM: 256MB soldered, 1 expansion slot open
    HDD: 30GB 4200 rpm
    Screen Size: 12 inches
    Optical Drive: Combo Drive
For the complete list of specs, see this page: http://support.apple.com/specs/iBook/iBookG4_Early2004.html
    Thanks,
    -Trevor

    Trevor,
I just took the heatsink off and I see the GPU. However, there are multiple parts to it.
So that would be called a daughter card. The problem with a daughter card is that the possibility of a reballing/reflowing failure is increased.
Should I place a shim over the whole chip or just one part of it?
It's that whole daughter card that has the problem. I've got a post around here somewhere. Here's the thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6051715&#6051715
    The picture is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/3835w2
Also, what material should I use for a shim here?
Probably the most elegant solution would be to use thermal pads like the ones that are already there. Don't build them up too much.
    What about from underneath?
My fear is that a metal shim will short the GPU and damage the logic board permanently. But I also fear that an insulating shim will not conduct heat as it is supposed to and cause the GPU to overheat.
Dale at Superior says that chip doesn't put out much heat but better to be overly cautious. I wouldn't use metal since there's no give to it. What's directly under that 9200 daughter card? One of my thoughts was to shim from both sides.
Where did you put that first shim?
    Richard

  • [SOLVED] Can't boot Windows 8 using grub2. invalid EFI file path

English is not my native language. Please excuse typing errors.
I have just successfully installed Arch linux with grub2 as its boot manager. I
followed the arch beginner guide. I've used grub before and I'm familiar with
it, so chose to use grub instead for efistub. I installed os-prober and
ran grub-mkconfig to create the grub.cfg file. The problem now is that I recieve
an error when I try to boot windows 8. I have two drives (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb)
and I believe both are EFI-systems.
However, it's not very important for me to use grub, so if booting into windows
8 is easier using efistub, I will try that.
The computer is ASUS ux32vd with a hybrid disk with 25GB on the SSD and 500GB on
the hard drive. I believe the SSD part is used by Windows.
This is the first error I recieved when I tried to boot windows.
    error: can't find command `drivemap'.
    error: invalid EFI file path.
    Press any key to continue...
Then I tried to follow this post
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=150183 and made a new boot
entry "Windows 82". And I got a new error:
    error: unspecified search type.
    error: file '/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi' not found
    Press any key to continue...
Here are some command line outputs.

    EDIT:
I gave up trying to make grub work, so I uninstalled grub and deleted all the grub files I could find.
    # pacrem grub-efi-x86_64
    # rm -fr /boot/grub
That last one I came to regret later on. So I installed rEFInd using the archlinux beginners guide. When I then tried to boot into windows It told me that /boot/grub/x86_64-efi/normal.mod was not found. I then reinstalled grub-efi-x86_64 and copied /usr/lib/grub/x86_64 to /boot/grub. Now everything works fine.

The EFI stub loader is a Linux-only boot loader; however, it is possible to use the EFI stub loader in conjunction with a separate boot manager, such as rEFInd or gummiboot. In such a configuration, you'd use the boot manager to select the OS to boot (Windows or Linux, and possibly the specific Linux kernel), and the boot loader (the Windows loader or the EFI stub loader built into a specific kernel) will then take over booting the OS. In Arch, this is often easier to configure than is GRUB, since GRUB is very complex and its automated tools to help with setting things up often get it wrong.
This is the first error I recieved when I tried to boot windows.
    error: can't find command `drivemap'.
    error: invalid EFI file path.
    Press any key to continue...
The "drivemap" command in GRUB is generally used when booting a BIOS-mode boot loader, and in fact your "Windows Recovery Environment (loader) (on /dev/sda2)" and "Windows 8 (loader) (on /dev/sda4)" GRUB entries are both built as for BIOS-mode Windows installations -- but the fact that your disks both use GPT means that Windows won't boot in BIOS mode on your computer. (This is one of the many things that the GRUB setup scripts can get wrong.)
Then I tried to follow this post
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=150183 and made a new boot
entry "Windows 82". And I got a new error:
    error: unspecified search type.
    error: file '/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi' not found
    Press any key to continue...
Both your "Windows 8" and "Windows 82" entries refer to an EFI boot loader file called EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi on your EFI System Partition (ESP). This should be correct, but your Boot Info Script output doesn't show any evidence of such a file. Sometimes Boot Info Script misses such things, so you may want to check it just to be sure. Your ESP is /dev/sda1, and it looks like it's being mounted at /boot/efi by default, so check for the /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft directory tree, and for /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi in particular. If that file isn't present, then something is wrong -- perhaps you mistakenly erased the ESP when you installed Linux, thus wiping out the Windows boot loader; or perhaps the file was accidentally deleted somewhere along the way. (Note that on FAT, which the ESP uses, case is irrelevant, and in fact case varies between the filenames reported by Boot Info Script and what's recorded in your configuration files.)
You do have another boot loader file that may be a duplicate of the Windows boot loader: EFI/BOOT/bkpbootx64.efi. This filename is generally created by Ubuntu's "Boot Repair" tool, which IMHO can do as much harm as good, especially on a system that's not booting Ubuntu. If you ran this tool, though, it's conceivable that bkpbootx64.efi is a copy of the Windows boot loader, so copying it to EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi might get things working. OTOH, the Windows boot loader relies on other files to do its job, so if they're not present, copying the Windows boot loader to its original location won't be sufficient.
If you can't get things working based on the preceding suggestions, I recommend you run a Windows repair tool. These are accessible from a Windows recovery disc. Such disc images are readily available on the Internet, but I don't happen to have any links handy. Try Microsoft's own site; images obtained from random third-party sites might contain malware. Once you've done this, chances are the computer will boot directly into Windows. You'll then need to either restore GRUB as the default boot loader or install another boot loader or boot manager.  You can use the Windows "bcdedit" command to do the former, as in:
    bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\arch-grub\grubx64.efi
You'll need to type this from an Administrator Command Prompt window.

  • I want to dual boot Windows 8 on my 20-inch, Mid 2007 iMac, from an external USB drive.

I want to dual boot Windows 8 on my 20-inch, Mid 2007 iMac, from an external USB drive. The internal drive is completely dead, it doesn't even show up in Disk Utility.  I'm running 10.8.2 from the external drive.  When I start Boot Camp Assistant, at the Introduction page, when I press the continue button nothing happens.  Do I have to have internal drive to run Boot Camp Assistant?  Can anyone provide me with the steps to dual boot, with his setup?  Thanks in advance!

    Hi maczimillon,
Only follow these steps, it works for my:
Open "System Information" and note your "Boot ROM Version" (some like MBP51.007E.B06)
Navigate to "Utilities" in Finder and open the package contents of -BootCampAssistant.app- with right click. Duplicate the "Info.plist" file to the Desktop e.g. and open that with Text Editor.
You must locate the keys "DARequiredROMVersions"and "USBBootSupportedModels"
Add new strings with the information of your machine under booth keys (step 1), always respect the format, such as: <string>MBP51.007E.B06</string> for the frist key and <string>MBP51</string> for the second key.
Save changes and replace the original plist file (it may ask you to enter admin pass)
If you proceeded correctly you will see the checkbox "Create a Windows 7 USB install disk" enabled in Boot Camp Assistant.
Then you can follow the usual Boot Camp installation using your WIN8 DVD iso image . The assistant program will proceed resizing your disk partition and installing necessary drivers for your iMac.
I strongly recomends you to use thirld party's bootloaders like rEFInd (rEFIt) because of the Apple SMC versions of some old machines should not be able to boot properly from external devices like USB drives.
