Game Programming Crash Course in J2ME
Hi boys and girls,
I have created a tutorial that walk through every step required to setup an IDE and create a game in J2ME.
The tutorial is available here: http://koderko.dk/J2METutorial/
The tutorial describes how to create a Pong clone. Focus has been on being easy to learn, and not on advanced "tricks".
Feedback is most welcome!

Aman Gautamhi,
if you want to do any kind of game programming in J2ME, i suppose you would require to use the Canvas class, well there are a few good resources.. try out
www.billday.com
www.javamobiles.com..
that ought to get u started.

Aman GautamI solved the same problem by using indexed color images instead of true color.
So, for example, if you have a colorful background you can convert it to a 256 color image.
Depending on your specific image and the devices you'll see it on you may or may not notice the difference, but the file size is generally smaller.
Then you can push further for smaller elements, like, say, a moving object like a pointer or a starship, you can reduce it to 60 or 30 colors, or even less.
Another technique is to use tiles to build up the background instead of big images. With MIDP2.0 there's the TiledLayer, but you can implement the same with some code also on MIDP1.0 if backward compatibility is of concern. -
Weird problem with game program installs...suggestions?
OK...heres a weird one I'll take any help with from the board...
specs:
amd 64 2800
msi k8t neo fsr
windows xp
asus 9800 xt
audigy platinum
1 gig kingston 3200
80 gig seagate SATA barracuda
Rosewill 52x/16x combo drive
Its a mid-level rig strictly for gaming.....
Ok...heres the details...
Ive loaded the following video games on it:
Farcry
Doom 3
painkiller
The suffering
Halo
farcry....when I place the "run" disc in the optic drive nothing happens...after a few minutes, I get a "you need to insert the correct disc in the drive" message...the light continually blinks on the front of the optic drive...but I DO have the right disc in.....
painkiller....takes forvever to load..sometimes it does..usually it doesnt..maybe successful load once out of every 8 tries.....when it does load, the game runs fine
the suffering...same results as painkiller
Doom 3...loads very slowly..game eventually starts after some freeze-ups at the initial run.....game hard crashes to windows 3 minutes or so after it starts at the same place on the screen....
Halo.........loads quickly...starts up instantly..runs smooth as silk with good frame rates.
See, THATS the one that kicks me in the ass!
I was initially thinking bad optic drive because it didnt seem to be recognizing the discs (of course, it wasnt recognizing only the RUN or initialization part of the run programs or so it seems)
Then with Doom 3 I was thinking I need to update to the latest CAT drivers because I had heard of rumors of very poor Doom 3 performance on the 9800xt's...
Thennnnnnnnnnn.......Halo runs like a gem! No lag...nothing!
Before I swap out any optic drives( and I know the cd's all work fine because I can run them in another rig I have with totally different specs), I was hoping you folks might offer suggestions or maybe have heard of similar issues....like I said...other than these issues, my rig runs like a "charm" ....
JJIt was the damned firmware for the optic drive!!!!!!!!!!!
For once, a drive manufacturer that had good (and fast) tech support, and a rather simple firmware flash tool that fixed the optic drive in about 40 seconds!
For those of you looking for an insanely inexpensive and (once updated) solid combo drive, AOpen has a "second" manufacturing arm called Rosewill, and for $37.00 you get a 52x/24x/16x combo-burner.
Lessons learned from this experience:
1. Optic drives all have their own unique BIOS that gets flashed completely seperately from your MB BIOS.
2. Most; repeat: most CD/DVD drive problems are apparently "fixed" by BIOS reflashing...according to Firmware sites on the web, before RMA'ing a bad or corrupt drive, a simple update and re-install of the drive can work magic!
3. The latest ATI drivers (.8 and now the beta .9) for the radeon cards fix most/any of the Doom 3 issues.
Now....can someone please tell me what the hell a "folding team" is?????!!!!!
Cheers!

Every time I launch a Source - based game, it crashes on startup. This happens with both "Team fortress 2" and "Tactical intervention". This began to happen recently (they used to work fine), but as I recall I've just installed Crossover... can anyone help me?
The bug report from "Tactical intervention" follows:

Applet Game Programming - player movement
HI Java Experts,
I have a very simple question applet game programming - jdk 1.02.
Let's say you have a player on the applet window. He can move right and left.
Naturally you have an image representing the player. When the player moves left you present an image loop with him running left. And vice versa for running right.
Of course when he stops moving you just want to show a still image.
What do you guys feel is the best technique for that situation ?
StephenHi Thanks for the advice.
I'm under the impression that if I used jdk1.4
everybody who wanted to play the game would have to go
through the trouble of downloading something . If
that is so, then i would like to stick with 1.02 to
have the widest possible audience.Use Java Web Start to deploy it as an application instead of an Applet. If your program is really cool, people will download the JDK 1.4 to use it. Then we will have more java users in the world :)
By the way i have a URL perhaps someone could look > at the source code and give additional suggestions
you can make sonic the hedge hog run and jump
http://www.swebdev.com/Adventure.html
That code has some good points. I like the nice object oriented flow of it. However, the way he sets up the Thread is all wrong. He uses yield and sleep, you would want to set up this using wait() and notifyAll() calls if you want to make it more interesting.
Right now i'm trying to address the issue of how to
reverse the image for when the player is running the
opposite way -- ? perhaps a separate thread in 1.02
might be an answer? I would be glad to hear all kinds
of suggestions on the sample code seen thereYou shouldn't need a separate thread just to reverse the image. If your little guy is already in his own thread, just switch the image that is displayed when the player hits the opposite direction key.
Think of threads like puppets, and you are the puppet master. Your little guys is a puppet, so he should be in his own thread. You can make him do whatever you want from your thread (the master) by pulling strings (changing globals, and message passing)
Wow... Thats a really good analogy... I just thought that up :) -
Videocard as the cause for program crash ?
I have got an MSI mainboard and an MSI video card. I overclocked my CPU modestly (FBS 200 MHz --> 244 MHz) with the corresponding decreasing in HTT and RAM speed, and keeping the timings very relaxed, and turning off the spectrum spread. However, my game Half-Life 2 and Internet Explorer crash from time to time. If I overclocked my video card, this significantly increased the frequency of crashng events.
It got me thinking: probably, the reason for crashing is that the frequency of operation of the overclocked mainboard does not match with that of the video card. I searched the BIOS for the settings like "locking the PCI bus frequency", but could not find any.
What would you recommend ?Quote from: BOSSKILLER on 13-August-07, 09:56:10
do not OC everythink in a same time..(keep VGA at stock parameters)
find out 1st max stable freq. for your CPU. (give vcore only when need, make test and ensure that its stable. watchout CPU temp during testing and ensure its in normal range.) look here for testing applications: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=107133.0
I had kept the VGA at the stock parameters, while having overclocked my CPU from FBS 200 MHz to 244 MHz. I found out that if I put BSB to be equal 250 MHz, then the computer crashes and starts to reboot in a loop. Thus, I decreased the FSB to 244 MHz. Using CPU-Z, I found that at such an arrangment, the FSB:DRAM is CPU/7, and the memory frequency is 331 MHz, which is close to the stock ferquency 333 MHz. Perhaps, this is an explanation why I cannot go higher in FSB than 224 MHz. In fact, I was already asked on this forum to post the CPU-Z details on memory timings which I did, and the comments were that the timings were relaxed. I control the temperature of CPU with CoreCenter, and the temperature has never been higher than something like 50 CD when I was running the CPU overclocked at FSB 244 MHz.
I have addedd the details on my PSU into my signature.
I re-state my problem: when either CPU or GPU is overclocked, I get the game HL2 crashed often (something like 5 times in a 2-hour session). I have now returned both CPU and GPU to standard settings, and I will watch the occurence of crash. So far (2 or 3 1-hour sessions), there was no program crash. I will watch for longer. -
Multiplayer game programming - Code of a basic server
I'm a beginner in multiplayer game programming and I'm looking for the code of a basic server for a multiplayer game. I don't mind which kind of game (I mean: chess, ping-pong, battlenet...) The important thing is the code pattern abnd the server structure.
Could anyone help me?If you want to have a look at a generic multi-threaded server, check out the Java networking tutorial.. there's a basic example server that responds to a "Knock knock, who's there?" conversation.. you can start off with it..
Of course it's not a game server but you could try sticking in a game engine to maintain the game world and change the user sessions to a proper game protocol.. e.g. sending key strokes or joystick movements. You could also get the server to send player and enemy positions etc...
Good luck! -

Hi, My OS is Windows 7 and I am using the DW CS5 program. For two days now whenever I try to open DW it crashes immediately. I have gone to the forum and tried the remedy the problem trying the three options listed for DW CS4 program crashes, but none helped. I wasn't able to locate a current FAQ regarding this problem in DWCS5. Can someone help me please.
Here's the remedies that I tried. The first one doesn't apply that I know of...the link to this forum is: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/417116. There are no error messages. Just the standard "Dreamweaver has experienced a problem and will shut down. Microsoft will look for a solution...blah-blah." Then the program closes out. In conjunction with these recommended remedies I have re-booted several times too. I am also running Microsoft Expression Web 4 on the same computer. Of course I haven’t tried to run both at the same time but separately. I have not had any issues up until now.

Dreamweaver crashes on start up
There are three common causes of Dreamweaver crashing on start up:
Conflict with security program on Acer computers
A corrupt Dreamweaver file cache
The 8KB bug
The following information describes how to handle each one.
Acer incomaptibility
There’s a known conflict between Dreamweaver and Acer eDataSecurity Management v3.0. If you’re on an Acer, and Dreamweaver won’t start, download the patch from http://www.egistec.com/oem-acer001/program-update.html. This should fix the problem.
Corrupted file cache
Dreamweaver creates a cache file called WinFileCache-*******.dat or MacFileCache-*******.dat inside your personal Dreamweaver configuration folder (the asterisks represent a series of letters and numbers that might differ from computer to computer). This occasionally gets corrupted causing instability, unpredictable error messages, and even crashes.
To solve the problem, close Dreamweaver and delete WinFileCache-*******.dat or MacFileCache-*******.dat. Sometimes, deleting this file is not sufficient, and you need to delete your personal configuration folder in its entirety.
WARNING: Do not confuse your personal configuration folder with the main configuration folder in Program Files in Windows or Applications on a Mac. You should never touch the main configuration folder unless you really know what you're doing.
Locating your personal configuration folder
The location of the personal configuration folder depends on your operating system and version of Dreamweaver. For Dreamweaver CS4, it’s as follows:
Vista: C:\Users\ View. In Advanced settings, choose Show hidden files and folders.
Once you turn on this option, hidden folders are displayed as dimmed icons to remind you to treat them with care.
The 8KB bug
This is a very rare bug that causes Dreamweaver to crash during operation, and then crash repeatedly each time you try to restart the program. It normally affects only Dreamweaver CS3 on Windows, and is caused by the presence of a file that's exactly 8,192 bytes (8KB) or a multiple thereof.
The solution is to open the file in a text editor and add a few extra characters (new lines or a comment will do). Save the file, and restart Dreamweaver.
If the file causing the problem is an image or other type of media file, edit it so that it's no longer an exact multiple of 8KB. -
PPro CS5 Crash Course for Non-Linear Editors
Backstory: I was asked this morning to teach a crash course in Premiere CS5 for the students in the film program at my school in the Introduction to Editing class who have been using FCP. They have to edit several projects using RED footage, and rather than spend a huge amount of time transcoding it to a format which FCP can work with, the prof has just decided to have his students use PPro CS5 (which is also on their editing computers). Since the prof doesn't use PPro, he's asked me to teach the class for him.
I created a very brief crash course powerpoint to assist me in giving them the fundamentals of the program, and supply them with a resource to refer back to as they work on their projects after class is over tomorrow morning. I created this for students who already have done some editing in an NLE, and so don't need to be taught WHAT everything is and HOW to cut footage and put together a timeline. This is just to introduce editors to PPro CS5 who are not already familiar with the PPro workflow.
Anyway, I wondered if some of you gurus would want to take a look at it and give me your feedback on what I've covered well, what I might have missed, and any other thoughts y'all had.
You can view a PDF of the document at www.bryan.edu/pprocs5 The viewer will bring it up embedded in the page at about 40-50%, so you'd be best off to click the download link and open it in Acrobat where you can go full size with it.Thanks for the input!
I actually taught hem REDCINE-X last week so that they could use it to export their files to an intermediate codec that FCP would understand, and preserve the new colorspace. Unfortunately these computers are so slow that the export process was gonna take nearly a week for all the files they need to work with, so the prof opted to swtich over to PPro midstream since it can handle the raw 4k and supports the new colorspace.
I didn't mention the saving thing... forgot about it; but the conforming issue did come up and we were able to talk about that in class!
The class went okay, I guess... I don't know what it is about students these days, but most of them (like all but one) weren't really paying very good attention and they were just sorta goofing off, talking amongst themselves, etc... made it really frustrating to teach this platform!
Oh well. -
I am new to game programming and J2ME. how can i integrate animated clips and application using J2ME>
Well thats kinda general... In my opinion java is a great language. Just not for games usually. Also what kind of game? 2d or 3d? I would recommend checking out unity for 3D games. I have used it and it is a great tool for people looking to make 3D games without as much work. Plus it supports execution in a browser like an applet kindof. For 2D i usually use flash as it greatly simplifies the process. If your hearts set on Java start off with this- http://www.tutorialized.com/view/tutorial/2D-Java-Platform-Game/10145

Have a problem with Lightroom 5.4. Since the program crashed yesterday it won't launch, it comes up with the message "Lightroom encountered an error when reading its preview cache and needs to quit". " Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem next time it launches". Except that it doesn't, I keep getting the same message and the program closes. Does anyone know what I can do to repair it? Can't back up, can't do anything.
There are dozens of threads in this forum that describe the fix
