Game slowness

Hello all,
Been pestering a friend of mine with my latest game attempt so I thought I'd pester the
general public now. Seems the game ran a bit slow on his machine, but things seem to
be running fairly smoothly for me. Now his machine may not be a high end, super sonic
beast, but the way I see it a wrist watch should be able to run a half assed attempt at this game
without missing a beat. Anyways I thought I'd ask nicely if some of you could give it a try:
http://home.chello.no/~ttollefs/game/hyh/hyh.html
Oh and just to keep us all on the straight and narrow let's not get into any poor AI implementation :)
(unless it could be causing the game to slow down ;) ). I know there are a few bugs here and
there, but hopefully you won't get to see any of 'em when you test it.
Oh, and the Hi-Score won't be stored so don't put "Break Hi-Score" on the top of your ToDo list.

Just noticed that half second hang up, but it doesn't seem to appear when I
run the game locally. I'll fiddle a bit with HPROF and see if I get any useful output.
I set the game to run at 30FPS and used this game loop to control it
public void run()
     int frameCount = 0;
     long startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
     while(true)
             gameCycle();
          frameCount++;
          while((System.currentTimeMillis()-startTime)/m_iFrameDelay < frameCount)
          {   Thread.yield();   }
}This is a slightly butchered version of a game loop I found in this forum, which was
using nano seconds (don't have the 1.5 sdk so I changed it). I checked the Windows Task
Manager when the game was running and it reported a 100% CPU usage so I switched
back to my previous game loop
public void run()
     while (true)
          try
          {   sleep(m_iFrameDelay);   }
          catch(InterruptedException ie)
          {   System.err.println("m_iFrameDelay was interrupted");   }
          gameCycle();
}which used around 5-10 % of the cpu, but the game seems to run just as well regardless of the
two versions.
As for the friend's JRE version I suspect that its not up to date so that could explain the
slowness on his machine.

  • Satellite A500-17X - Games slow down if I play on battery mode

    Hi
    When my laptop (Satellite A500-17X) is plugged in, the game I play (Call Of Duty 4) works very nice but if I try to play the game while my laptop is on battery the games slows down. If you know what I mean.
    Is this supposed to happen because the graphic card doesn't work well when the laptop is on battery or is something wrong with my laptop?

    Hi
    As mentioned my Syntax, Windows power management decreases the performance of some devices like GPU or CPU using battery mode.
    This helps to safe the battery power and to increase the battery working time
    Furthermore your cooling modules dont run with full performance using battery and this would lead to a higher internal temperature which could slow down the CPU and GPU as well
    So connected the AC adaptor or change the settings in power management but you should note that this will decrease the battery working time dramatically.

  • Restaurant City and other Facebook games slow

    I bought my wife a fancy new MBA for xmas with the plan of inheriting her old MBP. Alas all is not well as one of her main uses for it is playing all those flash games on facebook, namely Restaurant City & Pack Rat, but the performance is plain ordinary. Just a simple rollover on a button takes a good second to appear, drop down menues can take two or 3 seconds to activate, and animations are like they're in slow motion. I realise I bought the entry level model of MBA and I know all the history of Flash on the Mac, but is this really the best I can expect from a brand new machine? I've downloaded the latest beta version of Flash (10.2), it helped only marginally. I've also noticed Firefox seems to run the games a lot faster than Safari does. Still nowhere near what our 3yr old 2.4ghz Macbook Pro runs them at. Activity monitor has Flash running at between 80%-140% CPU with safari. Firefox runs it at around 60%-80% which seems to reflect the performance difference I'm seeing.
    Is this as good as it gets?

    Hi Aaron,
    Try emptying the Safari cache more often. Command + Option + E or from the Safari menu bar click Safari / Empty Cache.
    Make sure there isn't a Safari Extension slowing things down. Go to Safari / Preferences then select the Extensions tab. You can turn Extensions off there to test.
    And, make sure it's not a Safari unsupported third party app causing the lag time. Troubleshooting help here.
    Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
    Also with Safari... go to Safari / Preferences - Security. Make sure Java is enabled.

  • Both IE and FF flash videos and games slow down/lag???

    Starting a half a year to a year ago, flash videos/video players and flash games on firefox and IE would run
    fine for a little while and then lag/slow down ridiculously. For the videos it would lag and skip for the rest of the video, but for the flash games it goes through a cycle of running fine and then running slow/very slow for a period of time. How can I fix this? It is so annoying and can make playing flash games and watching videos with flash almost impossible some times.
    I unchecked the the box for hardware acceleration already.

    Do you have any suggestions in terms of the slowing down/lagging issue? Also, is there an issue with flash player itself that is causing everyone to have all these problems with it ruining videos and stuff? Is adobe working on it/is there any hope that future version of flash player will get rid of the lag or has adobe gone down a path that is just going to cause problems for some people, permenantly, no matter what?

  • Yoga 10 Running Games Slow

    i just recently purchased the Yoga 10 Tablet and I finally received the shipment. I opened the box, updated firmware and all apps, then downloaded a game from the app store that I play on my iPhone. The game opens but runs so slow, I cannot even play it! Is the tablet so weak that it cannot run the game? If so, how many other apps will this tablet not be able to properly run? The game is Game of Thrones: Ascent and can be installed and played for free through google apps and apple apps. I am highly disapointed that the first app I try to use with the tablet and the cannot run it properly. I'm not sure what to do because I see no tech support for lenovo that I can call but I'm very tempted to keep searching and see if I can contact the company to return the product. I am highly dissapointed  and I'm wondering if anyone else has problems running apps and games with this device? If any mod or company man is reading this and can help understand, that would be greatly appreciated as well.

    I am having the same issue with my Yoga 2 Pro 8 incher tablet. Win 8.1 runs like silk and so does Windows 10 for the 1st 10 minutes then browsing my PC it just turns into a laggy mess taking 10-20 seconds to open folders until I sign Out and in again or reboot... I have all the latest drivers (including Lenovo ones) and I did fresh install, but it's still grinds to a halt after 10 minutes... even thought the CPU or HDD are not being used more than 5%. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ISSUE RESOLVED:- (Well for me, and hopefully for you... need to test more to make sure it was this) The intolerable lag in Windows 10 was resolved by DISBALING the LENOVO SMART SWITCH service  in ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS/SERVICES located in the Control Panel If you want to observe the instant speeding up of your system when it's lagging open the TASK MANAGER and hit END TASK on the LENOVO SMART SWITCH service. Not sure what this service does in WIndows 8.1 or Windows 10 but I ain't missed it.

  • Games slow to load after upgrade of graphics card.

    I have a Compaq presario sr5123wm. Running Vista service pack 2 . Had trouble with it shutting down or freezing up while playing games or or using the internet, it seened to do it more if I tried to do more than one thing at a time. So I changed the graphics card to Radeon HD 4550 and the power supply to 400 watt. I Also cleaned the inside, ran Norton scans and ran updates. That seemed to fix the lock ups. Now when I try to load sims 2 it stops responding and when I try to play World of Warcraft it load very slowly. any suggestions?
    This question was solved.

    HI,
    It would have handled 4GB. It actuall would use only @3.25 GB in a 32-bit operating system.
    The advantage is the way the memory bus sees a pair of identical memory modules. Your motherboard is capable of running them as Dual channel memory. If you don't have identical memory sticks in the slots the motherboard will run them single channel mode and that creates a bit of a bottleneck and slows down your PC.
    Unfortunately, you chose a non gaming video card. That is the central of the games loading slowly. The lack of memory in dual channel mode just compounds the problem.
    You can bump the video up quite af ew notches with a NVIDIA GeForceGT 220 or 240 series video card. You may want to consider upgrading your PC instead of sinking funds into an older platform PC. There areplenty of games your pc is not capable of running at this stage  of its lifecycle.
    Best regards,
    erico

  • Games slow after disk repair

    So my Macbook froze while playing Dragon Age Origins and i had to force shutdown. When i tried to reboot, it froze at the apple logo and then went to either a black screen or a grey screen. I then put in the install dvd and used the disk utility to repair it and it's booting properly now. However when I try playing Dragon Age or Starcraft 2 they are unplayably slow. I've tried resetting the SMC, the PRAM, and repairing the disk permissions to no avail.

    Did Disk Utility have to repair anything? Or did it say everything is OK?
    If it repaired something, then it may have had to delete a key sector of information on your drive, which prevents these games from playing. That could be a problem. You also may have a failing drive, but you will know when that happens as time goes on.
    I would suggest reinstalling the games. Do not reinstall OSX, because that isn't going to fix your problems.

    comparatively, my gt783 laptop gtx580m performes significantly better. most games are fine xcept tomb raider arkham city borderlands 2 assassins creed 3 nfs most wanted. etc
    i've monitored vram and it has never even reached 800mb even in crysis 3 [medium preset]
    according to microsoft system explorer gpu never reaches 80% load - i haven't furmarked / kombusted but i did various game tests [all mentioned + more]
    not overclocked / no msi afterburner [although it does have nvidia gpu boost]
    you guys are my last hope

    What measn it runs "slow". Be a bit more specific and give some more details.
    Also list full system specs following >>Posting Guide<<. For example it is not enough tp just add 550W psu as we need specs.

  • PC running 3d Games slower than it used to

    i recently moved my pc down to the basement and now it can't play a 3d game without slowing down for more than 10 minutes.  It can still play older 2d games like Majesty, but just the other day I was able to play Battlefield 2 and Mount & Blade on full graphics for as long as i wanted.  Now it slows down as if I were playing an internet game and experiencing lag, but I am only playing offline.  I've tried Disk Defrag, changing outlets, cleaning Temp Files, clearing out unused programs.  I'm at the point of where all I can think of is to erase everything and start over, but would hate to do that and have the problem return.  Anyone know what is wrong?

    Gokengt, are you using the integrated video or a dedicated video card?  If you are running a dedicated video card, you may be able to adjust the fan speed.  I agree with Dave that it sounds like a heat problem.  In many basements there is not sufficient airflow to cool the computer.

  • Game Slow - Tranparent Graphics

    The game I'm writing happened to stutter randomly while playing it. I narrowed down the cause to the tiles being drawn that all had transperency in them. Is there a way to draw images with transparency faster? They are currently using just the standard drawImage().

    ok, well without several cmdline options to enable experiemntal alpha acceleration, only bitmask transparency is accelerated in 1.4.x Windows JVM.
    Sounds to me like your png files maybe usin full alpha transparency.
    You have 3 options :-
    1) change them to use bitmask transparency.
    2) If you don't need 16milion colors, use gif.
    3) keep your images the same, and just copy them to a bitmask managed Image, obtained from
    graphicsConfiguration.createCompatibleImage(width,height,Transparency.BIT_MASK);

    I wouldn't bother with either of those. If you're having a specific problem, describe what you're experiencing in a new thread with an appropriate subject and people should be able to help.
    i dont even know what my os is?
    Pull down the Apple menu and select the first item ("About This Mac").

  • Transparency slows game big time!

    When I make any object and set it to have transparency:
    AlphaComposite myAlpha = AlphaComposite.getInstance(AlphaComposite.SRC_OVER, 0.5f);
    g.setComposite(myAlpha);
    or
    Color newColor = new Color(255,0,0,100);
    g.setColor(newColor)
    then...
    g.drawXXX( ... );
    the game slows down hugely! I've noticed it doesnt happen for drawn objects with small dimensions. However, my game needs to have layered menus on top of the game animation which can be seen through it.
    Help please....

    It is activatable via flags though, as is the Java2D opengl pipeline.
    if it doesnt get better, you might want to perform any transparency/translucency settings in an outside program (paint/photo applications),
    so that your java application needs not worry about setting these values during runtimeThis will not speed upi your app. at all, the reason full alpha is slow, is because it requires read-back of pixels, to be able to perform the composition.
    If you are rendering onto an unaccelerated surface (i.e. a BufferedImage backBuffer), the operation will be performed entirely in software.
    1) the source pixel is read from main memory, (using up memory bandwidth)
    2) the destination pixel is read from main memory (using up more memory bandwidth)
    3) the composition operation performed by the CPU, (using CPU time)
    4) finally the new value is written back to the destination image in main memory. (using yet more memory bandwidth)
    This process is fairly slow, because it uses up CPU time, and chokes your memory bandwidth.
    However, if you are rendering full alpha images onto an accelerated surface (such as a VolatileImage, or a BufferStrategy backBuffer), the overall speed will be ALOT SLOWER than performing everything in software!!
    This is because the operation is still performed by the CPU, not the GPU.
    So,
    1) the source pixel must be read from the source image - this will either be a read of main memory (in the case of a BufferedImage), or it will be a VERY slow read-back from vram (in the case of a VolatileImage, or a BufferStrategy backbuffer)
    2) the destination pixel must be read-back from the accelerated surface onto which you want to render - Either a BufferStrategy backBuffer, or a VolatileImage. As mentioned earlier, read-back from VRAM is a VERY slow operation.
    3) The composition operation is performed by the CPU.
    4) the new value is written back to the VRAM destination image. (this uses bus bandwidth)
    So, to get faster fullAlpha rendering, you have 2 options.
    1) Set the "sun.java2d.translaccel" flag to true, to enable fullAlpha acceleration.
    This will hardware accelerate the operation, reducing the cost of the operation to very little.
    2) do not use a vram surface for the source or destination images.
    (basically do not use VolatileImage or BufferStrategy if you intend on using fullAlpha).
    This will allow everything to be performed in software, as efficiently as it can be. The speed won't be impressive, and it will hog your memory bandwidth - but its still ALOT better than alpha compositing onto accelerated surfaces in software.

  • MBP 13 - card issues - slow during 3D games sometimes

    Hi, I have a MBP 13 (MacBook Pro 13 inch), I've bought it on 2009 July:
    - CPU 2,53 Ghz
    - Nvidia M9400
    - 4 GB RAM
    Before I did not play much, I never really had this happen before. Recently I've started playing 3D games like league of legends (in windows xp), Sonic Fan Remix demo (in snow leopard), and I have a problem:
    - The game starts well, 60 fps.
    - After the game slows down for about 20 minutes (usually happens when the card it's hot) -> 82 ° more or less
    - The game returns to its normal speed, however the graphics card still hot.
    How I can fix this? Maybe my graphics card has been damaged and no longer work as before?
    Thanks

    If you got a virus on your Windows partition, that in itself wouldn't affect Mac OS X partition directly. If you have a Windows partition you should take all the usual Windows related measures to ensure your system is protected against Virus/ Trojans/ Malware etc by installing Anti Virus software.
    Have you reset your PRAM (and/or Permissions)? Did this have any effect?
    Since your MBP is so new, if a PRAM (& permissions) reset didn't help, I'd make an appointment to see a Genius at your local Apple Store and get them to check your MacBook Pro over.
