Gaming Power

Hey everybody looking into buying a MBA, aside from the beauty, portability and display.... did I mention the beauty of the macbook air, this just seems like a must buy for me. Another plus is being able to use windows on the apple OS, my main concern is gaming right now. My current desktop is pretty outdated so I would get an "upgrade" from buying an MBA, just wanted to know the experience, if any, you guys have had, more specifically with world of warcraft and or starcraft 2. Oh also, I'm not looking to see if it can support the highest resolution from these games, if it could support moderately with no lag or freezing times in either games with online experiences that's all I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance for any responses.

i upgraded from an early 2008 penryn 15 inch macbook pro to the fully loaded 2.13 ghz 13 inch macbook air, and i will tell you that the mba runs starcraft 2 BETTER than my old mbp. it doesn't make sense since the mba is inferior (atleast on paper) hardware-wise compared to my old mbp, but yeah - i am able to run starcraft 2 on medium/medium settings and it runs like butter in os x. i couldn't even do that in bootcamped windows 7 on the mbp with updated gaming drivers for the 8600m.

  • 1150 B85M Gaming power up on its own

Hi, I just built a pc for basic computing work and web surfing. After the build the unit would power itself up after I shut it down from window. It would power itself up anywhere in the interval of 5-45 minutes. But if i shut the unit down by holding down the power button from the front of the case, it would stay off indefinitely until i power it up using the same button. Please help as i play around with multiple setting in bios but it is still doing the same thing.
    Hardware is at following:
    1150 B85M MicroATX Gaming motherboard
    G3258 cpu
    TP-link wireless card
    2x2gb Kingston RAM
    40gb intel SSD
    APEX DM-387 case

As keep the pc on standby is there any wake event enabled in bios (e.g. wake on lan)?
I do not see any wake on lan feature in the bios after going through it several time. I might have missed it if it is within the advanced feature dealing the overclocking.
I currently have these features adjusted with no success:

-Restore after AC Power Loss               [Power off]
-Intel (R) Smart connect Technology     [Disabled]   (I don't really know what it is and have not research it)

  • T510: Gaming power only at 40 Watts

I formatted my laptop and updated the bios, now my computer can't handle games I used to play with ease.
I have my power settings at max, before it would run at 90 watts. Now only at 40watts.
I have a T510 with NVS3100 video card. Could it be discrete video is not being used?

T510 does have Optimus Nvidia technology in later model T510.

  • Amping up gaming power

I was considering amping up my computer (Intel-mac 2.4 GHz intel core 2 duo, 1gb RAM) to play games (boot camp). I was thinking about adding more RAM, an external hard drive, and, the most pressing issue, to add the new nvidia geforce gtx285 graphics card for mac. I was wondering if it would be cheaper to buy a 'crysis pc' or to improve my mac. Thanks.

You can add RAM, up to 4GB. 1GB is on the low side for running Leopard, so that would be a worthwhile and fairly cost-effective upgrade. An external drive would be a good upgrade as well. If you want the fastest access speed and your iMac has a FireWire 800 port, get a drive with FireWire 800. OWC (macsales.com) has good options, and most of their cases you can buy complete (with drive installed) or as a kit to add your own drive that you choose and acquire separately.
The graphics card in an iMac is integrated into its design. You cannot upgrade it. Any graphics card that you may have found that is "for Mac" is probably for a Mac Pro.

  • Gaming power of dc7900

    My problem is that;

  • Using the iMac for display only?

I bought an iMac in 2008. I use it for the majority of my computing needs, and for the most part is serves my purposes for everything. One thing I would like though is more gaming power.
I have a PC tower that is not connected to anything at the moment and needs a little hardware work which I will do myself.
Since the iMac is not user upgradable, and the video/graphics card is not upgradable at all, I was curious if I was able to connect the PC tower to the iMac's screen and use it as a display for a gaming computer and disconnect the tower for regular computing.
While I'm asking, is there any external way to improve the graphics card for gaming that anyone is aware of?

...Its too bad the graphics card is not upgradeable. I'm also going to try and find out if there is some sort of external way to increase performance....
This is the inherent issue with all "all-in-ones", both laptops and desktops, both PCs and Macs. For the most part, they are not upgradable. You can replace HD and RAM, but pretty much everything else "is what it is" and upgrades are "external only." Don't hold your breath that you'll find any way to increase performance (video or CPU.)
In the long run, you may want to consider just selling the iMac and get a new Mac. A Mini or Mac Pro, both of which do not have built-in monitors so would require you to get a monitor anyway, then you could KVM it with the PC. (I have my Mini KVMed with a Dell Poweredge server, which is sitting under my desk.) Alternatively, the new 27" iMac does allow for video input so it could be used as a monitor for the PC.

    •   Field-leading SLI gaming graphics

    •   “In that curious mixture of overkill and restraint, MSI succeeded with the GT80 Titan SLI, in its own way: You can’t buy a gaming laptop remotely like it from anyone else, and the graphics power for gaming—both on the 1080p screen and with external displays—is unparalleled among laptops at this writing.”
    •   “Typing on the GT80 Titan SLI keyboard was unlike any other laptop typing experience we’ve had, with very deep travel and quiet action as we typed.”

The dual GTX 980M SLI arrangement here rang up at 13,027 with the SLI running at full tilt, beating what we saw from the full desktop GTX 980 card by a goodly margin.”

I own GX660 over 2 years already. Got the i5-460M version with 4GB RAM (lately upgraded to 8), 500GB HDD 7200RPM and powerful ATI MR HD5870. I love it for it's gaming power, still can run new AAA games pretty well (ofc with a little lowered details), but I haven't found a game I couldn't play at all yet. I also purchased a cooling pad to help laptop with cooling itself and temperatures aren't high at all (max 73

Seems like AMD in this year put a lot of efforts to optimize games, including Crysis 3 and Tomb Raider, with game developers.

  • Apple...it IS 2007..what about Ap performance?

Yesterday I had the opportunity to download a card's worth of RAW images (.orf) on my G4 Powerbook (20inch), using iView Media Pro. I had been on a shoot and stopped in a local coffee shop to preview what I got...wow. I had forgotten how FAST that is (on a firewire 400 card reader, no less)...and when it came to rotating images (to portrait)...it simply SMOKED.
I came home with the card and loaded it into my MPro, 2.6 with 2G ram and the standard 7300 card...yuck. OK, so I am used to the speed and it is not bad...and Ap is the most powerful DAM and editing tool I have used, but cmon Apple, you can do better...I'm a dedicated Macaholic and am used to a little pain for innovation that has always worked out fine in the end....
So, I'm hopeful that 2007 will continue the improvements we have already seen on the features and performance of this great application...I just won't use IVMP any more...especially since its a MSFT product now...
    cheers,
    david

William - with all due respect, we need to be objective as well the "preview" images from IVMP are .orf (RAW) thumbnails, generated by Core Image in OSX - NOT jpeg's. My comparison was (hopefully) limited to simply image import and rotation speed. I had invoked NO edit processes in Ap or in iView - and DO agree that the real-time image editing is powerful in Ap.
Your comment about the hardware improving to help this situation is particularly painful as I'm running on Apple's latest power platform with their recommended cpu/graphics configuration for (non-gaming) power use.
I appreciate your sentiment and share your optimism...but sincerely hope Joe and his team will recognize the scale of improvement that SHOULD be realized. This forum is loaded with "shooters" using LightRoom and the growing number of other good RAW processors...
Thanks for your comments and support of a ground-breaking product.

  • Video card upgrade options for Pavilion p6210f after 600W PSU

    Greetings,
I have a Pavilion p6210f, whose PSU I just replaced with a 600W Corsair (http://tinyurl.com/7nnjfmb). I have been trying without avail to pick an appropriate video card to take advantage of the new PSU to get some decent gaming power. Any suggestions?
    Thank you,

Take a look at these nVidia cards... GTX 550 Ti, GTX 560 Ti, GTX 650 Ti, GTX 660 Ti  and these AMD cards... Radeon HD 6850 or higher, Radeon HD 7850 or higher. Try to keep the length below 11 inches.

The last question I'm not clear on, is the 3 drive set-up.  Is it OK to use the 1tb SATA-III as the C: and D: drives, just by partitioning it?  Or do you have to actually have 2 physical HD's for C: and D?
Thanks, your expert knowledge is greatly appreciated!

    Hi all,
I'd like to say hello to everyone here. I am IMERSA or Justin. I am one of the two owners of acrylic PC manufacturing company Parvum Systems.

Personally I have undergone some pretty serious modding projects in my time. You can find these by searching for 'Magnus' 'Onwards and upwards' & 'Parvum ITX'.
Last summer we got asked by MSI to complete two show rigs for the stall. Deadline on these was VERY tight so we did not have time to produce a photo by photo project log but we would like to share our work here for anyone who did not see.
It also gives us a chance to answer any questions.
We completed two rigs. One ITX & the second mATX. We kept to SFF as the rigs where for a LAN show. Perfect for keeping things powerful & small.

If you want to see these rigs in person they will be on show at the Summer iSeries along with a third and larger unseen rig
We will post updates regarding the new rig here.
    Thanks for the support MSI.

I have seen this amazing case in person during i52, it's really attractive to me and running 4K games surprisingly!! I'm looking forward to see more modding from you and PARVUM system!!
