GC 10gR3 - Edit Oracle Listener Configuration - listener.ora is DOS-Format

GC 10gR3 - Edit Oracle Listener Configuration - listener.ora is DOS-Format under Unix
Hello everyone,
during an demo of Grid Control 10gR3 for an customer I found the following issue:
When the Grid Control Server is running under Windows and the listener.ora file of an target is edited with GC the resulting file is in DOS-Format even if the target is a Unix system. This can cause the listener to fail during the restart.
To reproduce that problem you have to do the following steps:
1. You need GC under Windows and a Listener target under Unix/Linux
2. Go to the edit page of the listener-target and use the "Edit" Button
3. Go to the "Logging & Tracing" Tab and enable Logging
4. Change the Logfile to a new filename e.g. LISTENER2.log
5. Apply that change with the "OK" button
6. Let the Listener get restarted on the next screen
Result:
You receive an error message:
LSNRCTL> Starting /opt/oracle/ora10g/bin/tnslsnr: please wait...
TNSLSNR for Linux: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production
NL-00280: error creating log stream /opt/oracle/ora10g/network/log
/listener2.log
.log
NL-00278: cannot open log file
SNL-00016: snlfohd: error opening file
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory
Listener failed to start. See the error message(s) above...
Analysis:
The listener.ora file is in DOS-Format and the Listener seams to have some problems to create a new log-file in that case. If the listener.ora file is converted manually with the tool dos2unix to be in Unix-Format the Listener starts without problems.
I can reproduce that behavior on two grid control installations. Can someone also reproduce that problem? I have not found an Bug or Patch for that issue.
Best Regards
Frank

Hello,
well, the listener.ora file is correct - the only problem is that it is in DOS-Format. When I use the tool dos2unix to convert listener.ora to be in unix format there are no problems to restart the listener.
Bye

This makes no sense.  You don't configure a listener nor a tnsnames.ora "in a database".   I hope this is just a language issue and not reflective of a fundamental misunderstanding of how tns works.

  • Oracle Net Configuration Assistant: Cannot configure listener (TNS-04605)

Using the Oracle Net Configuration Assistant (netca) on Windows Server 2008 to configure an 11gR2 listener, the process to add a listener appears to complete normally. However, no service is created and no listener.ora file is created.
The shortcut provided in the Start menu runs netca without any console, so errors are hidden. The first step to finding out what's going on is to open a command console and run netca.bat from the command line. This time, I could see an error when completing the listener configuration:
ListenerException: Could not save listener: TNS-04414: File error
caused by: TNS-04605: Invalid syntax error: Unexpected char or LITERAL "(" before or at ( PROGRAM =
This implies that the value entered into the listener.ora file just before the PROGRAM = entry is invalid, making the subsequent line unexpected.
Looking at a listener.ora file on another server, the entry generated before PROGRAM = is ORACLE_HOME =.
My ORACLE_HOME environment variable must be invalid.
On examination, the variable was set with a backslash at the end eg. F:\Oracle\Product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\
By removing the trailing backslash and re-running netca, the configuration tool was able to set up my listener as expected.
I hope that making a record of this will help somebody else save time solving this problem in future.
    Chrispy

It certainly helped me! Thank you.

  • Configuring tnsnames.ora / listener.ora with HOST = localhost

    Dear Oracle experts,
presently I'm trying to configure an Oracle installation on a Win2k server
to work with HOST = localhost entries in my tnsnames.ora and listener.ora.
I have to do that because I want to use that Oracle installation as an image
for several computers which will get different IPs and computer names.
My problem is, taht I only can configure my entries with a real IP adres (127.0.0.1 does not work ) or with the present name of the system but not with localhost or 127.0.0.1.
My listener.ora looks like below :
    # listener.ora Network Configuration File: D:\oracle\product\10.1.0\Db_1\NETWORK\ADMIN\listener.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
    (SID_LIST =

    (SDU = 4096)
    (SID_NAME = EMS)
    (ORACLE_HOME = D:\oracle\product\10.1.0\Db_1)
    (PRESPAWN_MAX = 10)
    LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost )(PORT = 1521))
The listener above lead to a
    ERROR - ORA-12541: TNS:no listener
if I try to connect via iSQLPlus. If I exchange HOST = localhost with HOST = mydnsname the I can connect to the computer via isqlplus.
Is there any possibility to configure the listener and tnsnames without using real IP adresses ?

But from what I understand, you can define the TNS_ADMIN environment variable to define a central location for the listener.ora file.

Hm never heard of global listener configuration.
Basic listener configuration file listener.ora is always in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin dir or in $TNS_ADMIN directory.
Listener configuration may differ for different oracle home versions.

    Hi
why the scan lister and listener configure/start from GRID home why not from Oracle Home.

    > why the scan lister and listener configure/start from GRID home why not from Oracle Home.
Because Oracle says that's the way it has to be.
As @MohaAGOU said, starting in 11gR2, the Listeners (both SCAN and traditional) are now cluster resources. Let's start with the SCAN Listener. There are only 3 of them, even if you have 4 or more nodes in the cluster. If a node goes down and a SCAN Listener were running on it, Grid Infrastructure will relocate the SCAN Listener to a surviving node. Much easier to do this if the entire resource were in the GI home. Note that an instance cannot be relocated and it is running on a different home.
As for the traditional listener. The Listener itself won't be relocated during a node termination, but its VIP will.
    Cheers,
    Brian

    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = fusion)(PORT = 1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))
now the file looks like following:
    LISTENER_APPDB =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = fusion)(PORT = 1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))
         (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = fusion)(PORT = 1522))

    (PROGRAM = extproc)
    (ENVS = "EXTPROC_DLLS=ONLY:D:\app\oracle2\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\bin\oraclr11.dll")
i have also changed the port of one of the instances in the tnsnames.ora file from 1521 to 1522.
Now it is possible to start Enterprise Manager for both instances. But after i connect to one of the
instances with the Enterprise Manager the other instance logs of. Is it ok so??? Will i have problems
with this configuration?? Should i do something different??
Second question: After i have installed an instance, during the installation some patches where
automaticaly installed. After that i have installed another instance. Do i have to patch this instance too???
Are the patches installed for the whole DBMS or just for one instance???
*Third question: If i have 2 instances how can i set the parameter btree_bitmap_plans for only*
one of the instances ??? I have found the following code to do this:
    ALTER SYSTEM SET "_b_tree_bitmap_plans"=false SCOPE=SPFILE;
but for wich instance the parameter will be set for both or just for one? Do i have to choose
one of the instances?? How can i do that??

  • Apex Listener Configuration Issue.

    Hi there,
As I wanted to try the latest Restful services in apex 4.2, I decided to install Apex Listener 2.0. I downloaded the file and followed the steps as in the installation notes. As a pre-requisite, I configured the Restful services successfully in apex 4.2 along with Oracle 11g Express Edition. However, the installation of listener seems to be not compleated successfully with the following installation feed back.

Thank you Probodh for your quick help. I set the port 8080 to apex listener and it does not give that error now.
However, it still says "Default Database Connection not configured properly"
I gave the SID name as xe which is the default one, and that is the correct SID for my DB also.
    Any possible mistakes in there?

  • Oracle 11g Express: listener/DB stopped regularly ...

    Dear all,
we currently use oracle DB 11g express edition on Win XP in order to do nigthly test of our product accessing the DB via a JDBC driver. After two successful nightly test communicating via JDBC doesn't work anymore due to stopped DB listener. The first error message I got was "ORA-12518, TNS:listener could not hand off client connection", I fixed it via settings up maximum processes to 450, then I got the next error message where I don't know what to do "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error". Please can you help me since I need a stable DB for nightly continuous integration tests.
    Thank you in advance, Andreas.

Bumping processes would seem to be a symptom fix, not a problem fix- if a session can't get a connection because available processes are at the max, must be some client programs with a bug/glitch where they aren't letting go of their session(s).
Eg. maybe hitting an exception block, and the code never sees a "close connection" call? Until that bug (the problem) gets fixed, increasing process limits is not going to be much of a fix. Just a guess, can't know for sure without seeing the code.
Anyways, for the ora-12560 something may have gone astray (or changed?) with host network adapter settings- hostname change? IP address change? IPv6? Is the host a DHCP client? Is there more than one NIC on the host? Do both the hostname and its IP address(es) resolve correctly? (... ipconfig /all ... `hostname` ... nslookup <hostname> ... nslookup <n.n.n.n> ...)
One item to try, stop the listener and move the listener.ora file "out of the way" (eg move listener.ora listener.ora.bk) as others have suggested here before. Any RDBMS install has its default listener, named LISTENER, and if all the default settings are OK for your setup then using that should work fine. Double checking that the listener service still shows in the services applet would also be advisable, only takes a moment ... Start/Run/services.msc ...
Another possible fix for ora-12560 is setting ...HOST=0.0.0.0... in listener.ora, that is the "any IPv4" address setting, but that is advisable only if the host has one NIC, otherwise the instance would be accepting connections at an address you might not want made available to remote clients.

  • Help on Listener and Tnsnames.ORA

    Hi guys,
I just installed Oracle Discoverer Admin Ed Rel 4 recently and i can't connect to Discoverer as well as SQL+ due to listener and tnsnames problem. Can you pls. help me to configure the .ORA files needed for the connection. I was trying to build database and connections local to my laptop. Is this possible using TCP-Loopback?
    Appreciate any help...
    Thanks.
    Enzo

There's another possible problem on the Windows platform: Database and Discoverer are installed in different Oracle homes, many people configure the sqlnet files inside the database's ORACLE_HOME, which are not read automatically by the other home(s). So solution is to copy all configuration files to ORACLE_HOME\network\admin of all ORACLE_HOMEs OR to set TNS_ADMIN, which points to one central location.

  • Oracle 10g Configuration for Student Edition

    To Whom It May Concern,
I am currently enrolled in an Oracle 10g course at a local community college, and am using the "Guide to Oracle 10g" textbook by Morrison, Morrison & Conrad (ISBN: 0-619-21629-8). This book came with two CD's that contain a scaled-down student version of two Oracle 10g databases (Northwoods University & Clearwarter Traders).
I have attempted to install and configure the database software so that I can log on to the databases using SQL*Plus, but I am unable to do so. When attempting to log on, I get a "TNS:no listener" error (ORA-12541) or similar error. I have tried adding and configuring a listener, net service, etc. using the Oracle Net Configuration Assistant, but nothing works. The configuration tests always fail. I am sure that I am using the correct host name (I checked the TNSNames.ora file).
Can you please assist? Do you have documentation (or advice) on how to successfully configure this software?
    Thank you,
    Greg

Thanks again for your reply, Phiri. I tried your suggestion, but still get the same errors. I tried searching the Oracle Home directory for a batch or executable file with the name "lsnrctl", but the search only returns two htm files. It looks like it can't execute the program simply because it does not exist.
NOTE: According to the .htm files, you are supposed to include the listener name after the command.
    Ex: lsnrctl start My_Listener_01
I tried this, but it did not work either
