Oracle Net Configuration Assistant: Cannot configure listener (TNS-04605)

Using the Oracle Net Configuration Assistant (netca) on Windows Server 2008 to configure an 11gR2 listener, the process to add a listener appears to complete normally. However, no service is created and no listener.ora file is created.
The shortcut provided in the Start menu runs netca without any console, so errors are hidden. The first step to finding out what's going on is to open a command console and run netca.bat from the command line. This time, I could see an error when completing the listener configuration:
ListenerException: Could not save listener: TNS-04414: File error
caused by: TNS-04605: Invalid syntax error: Unexpected char or LITERAL "(" before or at ( PROGRAM =
This implies that the value entered into the listener.ora file just before the PROGRAM = entry is invalid, making the subsequent line unexpected.
Looking at a listener.ora file on another server, the entry generated before PROGRAM = is ORACLE_HOME =.
My ORACLE_HOME environment variable must be invalid.
On examination, the variable was set with a backslash at the end eg. F:\Oracle\Product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\
By removing the trailing backslash and re-running netca, the configuration tool was able to set up my listener as expected.
I hope that making a record of this will help somebody else save time solving this problem in future.
Chrispy

It certainly helped me! Thank you.

  • Manually starting Intelligent Agent Configuration Assistant and HTTP Listener

I have installed Oracle 9i on Solaris 8 and it stopped with an "Out of Memory" error during the Starter Database creation. I have fixed the memory problem and have now manually started the Database Configuration Assistant manually and managed to install a new database. Now I am trying to start the Intelligent Agent Configuration Assistant and the Apache HTTP Listener, but I cannot find out how to do this so that I can continue on with and complete the installation process from where I left off.
Do anyone know how to do this? I would appreciate any help that anyone can give.
    Thanks
    Anthony

Lets start with what product you are installing and why. An Oracle database installation, in and of itself, does not install an HTTP server.
Of course one might also wonder why you are, just now, installing software so old it is in desupport.

  • Oracle Net config assistant not opening on windows.

    Hi,
I installed Oracle 9i server on a windows XP machine on Friday, 2nd December. I configured the listener service, netconfig name and my application was up and running.
Today I wanted to make some changes in the listener service; but the net config assistant window is not coming up. New processes launch.exe and jrew.exe are starting in the background with each attempt to launch.
I made sure I am logged in as the same user which installed Oracle on the machine(having ORA_DBA privilages), gave the full control privilages to this user. But the net config assistant is still not opening up.
Could anyone help in this regard.
    Thanks
    Puneet

Has anyone of you seen this problem before??
    Kindly reply asap.
    Thanks

Hi according to RFC 952 and RFC 1123 which explain the rules for hostnames the underscore (_) is not allowed in the hostname.
This most likely causes the problem in your case.
    Kind regards,

Well, I hope that you have a static IP address on your machine
Add that static IP address to the hosts file.
Also make sure that you have the latest JDK installed.

  • ORA-12514 Error when using Net Configuration Assistant

I have recently installed Oracle 11g on a Windows 2008 server and am now trying to connect via the Oracle client on my local machine.
Here is how I've been using Net Configuration Assistant so far:
    Listener Configuration
The name of my listener is LISTENER_PROXIMA (proxima is the name of the server). Does this need to be named something else? Something specific?
    I'm using TCP to connect.
    I'm using standard port 1521.
    Naming Methods
Local Naming and Easy Connect Naming
    Local Net Service Name
Service name is ADMI04 (checked this against the lsnrstl service status on the server and it's correct)
    Using TCP
    Using the hostname proxima.domain-name.com
I'm attempting to connect as SYS (but have tried others with the same result)
When I go to test the connection I keep getting the ORA-12514 error. Does anyone know what I should do? Reinstall the listener? If so, are there any suggestions or guidance for that?
    Thank you.

    =================================
    A couple of important points.
First, the listener is a server side only process. It's entire purpose in life is to receive requests for connections to databases and set up those connections. Once the connection is established, the listener is out of the picture. It creates the connection. It doesn't sustain the connection. One listener, with the default name of LISTENER, running from one oracle home, listening on a single port, will serve multiple database instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is an unnecessary complexity to try to have multiple listeners or to name the listener as if it belongs to a particular database. That would be like the telephone company building a separate switchboard for each customer.
Second, the tnsnames.ora file is a client side issue. It's purpose is for address resolution - the tns equivalent of the 'hosts' file further down the network stack. The only reason it exists on a host machine is because that machine can also run client processes.
Assume you have the following in your tnsnames.ora:
    larry =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVICE_NAME = curley)
)Now, when you issue a connect, say like this:
$> sqlplus scott/tiger@larrytns will look in your tnsnames.ora for an entry called 'larry'. Next, tns sends a request to (PORT = 1521) on (HOST = myhost) using (PROTOCOL = TCP), asking for a connection to (SERVICE_NAME = curley).
Where is (HOST = myhost) on the network? When the request gets passed from tns to the next layer in the network stack, the name 'myhost' will get resolved to an IP address, either via a local 'hosts' file, via DNS, or possibly other less used mechanisms. You can also hard-code the ip address (HOST = 123.456.789.101) in the tnsnames.ora.
Next, the request arrives at port 1521 on myhost. Hopefully, there is a listener on myhost configured to listen on port 1521, and that listener knows about SERVICE_NAME = curley. If so, you'll be connected.
    What can go wrong?
First, there may not be an entry for 'larry' in your tnsnames. In that case you get "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" No need to go looking for a problem on the host, with the listener, etc. If you can't place a telephone call because you don't know the number (can't find your telephone directory (tnsnames.ora) or can't find the party you are looking for listed in it (no entry for larry)) you don't look for problems at the telephone switchboard.
Maybe the entry for larry was found, but myhost couldn't be resolved to an IP address (say there was no entry for myhost in the local hosts file). This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe there was an entry for myserver in the local hosts file, but it specified a bad IP address. This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe the IP was good, but there is no listener running: "ORA-12541: TNS:no listener"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, but it is listening on a different port. "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, it is listening on the specified port, but doesn't know about SERVICE_NAME = curley. "ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"

  • How to invoke net configuration assistant

    Hi,
i have oracle 10g in linux.
how to invoke net configuration assistant to reconfigure listener and net service name.
    Philip.

    Hi Srinivas,
when i was checking some file, this is what i got.
    /etc/rc5.d/s99local
in this above file there were scripts to start processes like dbstart, apachectl, emctl
so what i did is created a file k99local under /etc/rc5.d
and the file contains the following:
    /home/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/http_1/Apache/Apache/bin/apachectl stop
    /home/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/bin/emctl stop dbconsole
    /home/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/bin/dbshut
what do u think abt this.
what is the difference between rc2.d, rc3.d, rc5.d
also there was an entry to start dbstart, apachectl under /etc/oratab and that automatically created this file s99local.
    what are these files for
    /etc/oratab
    /etc/rc.d
    /etc/rc2.d
    /etc/rc3.d
    .....etc
    Can you explain pease.
    Thanks,
    Philip.

    Hi all,
I've found a solution to this problem. So far I've been trying the installation through MSTSC by taking administrative control (through /console option). Later, I tried my luck by installing it through Net Meeting which proved to be successful.
Hope you can try the same and ged rid of the installation issues.

    Hi all,
I've found a solution to this problem. So far I've been trying the installation through MSTSC by taking administrative control (through /console option). Later, I tried my luck by installing it through Net Meeting which proved to be successful.
Hope you can try the same and ged rid of the installation issues.
