Generate alphanumeric sequence using oracle sequence

Hi,
Can we generate alphanumeric sequence from Oracle sequence.
Sequence would be something like this. Please advice
TEMP-0001
TEMP-0002
TEMP-0010
Thanks,
Lak

hi,
You can try below procedure...
SQL> create sequence sec
  2  minvalue 0
  3  start with 001
  4  increment by 1
  5  nocache;
Sequence created.
SQL> select 'temp-'||to_char(sec.nextval) from dual;
'TEMP-'||TO_CHAR(SEC.NEXTVAL)
temp-1

    I'm using oracle sequence in control file of sql loader to load data from .csv file.
    Controlfile:

    PHONE_LIST_ID "seqId.NEXTVAL",
    COUNTRY_CODE CHAR,

    1519,8,9,9,B
    1520,8,9,9,B
    1521,8,9,9,B
    1) As first column uses oracle sequence, we have not defined that in datafile.
    This gives me error "Can not insert NULL value for last column"
    Is it mandatory to specify first column in datafile, even though we are using sequence?
    2) Another table is referencing PHONE_LIST_ID column (the one for which we using sequence) of this table as a foreign key.
    So is it possible to insert this column values in other table simultaneously? Sequence no. should be same as it is in first table...
    Kindly reply this on urgent basis....

    use BEFORE INSERT trigger
    with
    select your_seq.nextval into :new.id from dual;

  • Using Oracle Sequence

    I am using sequence to generate Id in table. I need the generated value in program to inster that value in another table.
    right now i am selecting value from "select <seq>.nextval from dual"
    is this right way or there is other better way of doing this?

    sorry, I did not mention I am doing this in MDB and Application server maintains a pool of MDB's so multiple MDB's will be accessing the sequence object so will curval return right value to me?
    That is one correct way to use a sequence. Note that
    you can also do the following:
    INSERT INTO PARENT (ID, ...) VALUES
    (<seq>.nextval, ...);
    INSERT INTO CHILD (PARENT_ID, NUM, ...) VALUES
    (<seq>.currval, 1, ...);
    INSERT INTO CHILD (PARENT_ID, NUM, ...) VALUES
    (<seq>.currval, 2, ...);<seq>.currval returns the last generated sequence
    number for the session. See

  • Drop/Create sequence using Oracle Job Scheduler

    IDE for Oracle SQL Development: TOAD 9.0
    Question: I am trying to do the following:
    1. Check if a certain sequence exists in the user_sequences table
    2. Drop the sequence if it exists
    3. Re-create the same sequence afterward
    All in a job that is scheduled to run daily at 12:00 AM.
    What I would like to know is if this is even possible in the first place with Oracle jobs. I tried the following:
    1. Create the actual "BEGIN...END" anonymous block in the job.
    2. Create a procedure that uses a dynamic SQL string using the same "BEGIN...END" block that drops and recreates the sequence using the EXECUTE IMMEDIATE commands
    But I have failed on all accounts. It always produces some sort of authorization error which leads me to believe that DDL statements cannot be executed using jobs, only DML statements.
    BTW, by oracle jobs, I mean the SYS.DBMS_JOBS.SUBMIT object, not the job scheduler.
    Please do not ask me why I need to drop and recreate the sequence. It's just a business requirement that my clients gave me. I just want to know if it can be done using jobs. If not, I would like to know if there are any work-arounds possible.
    Thank you.

    Do they know that doing DDL 'on the fly' will invalidate the dependent objects?
    Best shot you can give at it is reset the sequence. And you could do it in a job, yes, as long as it's interval is during some maintenance window (no active users).
    Regarding resetting a sequence, you, (and your clients) should read this followup:
    http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=100:11:0::::P11_QUESTION_ID:1119633817597
    (you can find lots more info on sequences and jobs by doing a search from the homepage http://asktom.oracle.com)
    Regarding the authorization errors: your DBA should be able to provide you the nessecary privileges.
    But in the end, this is something I'd rather not would like to see implemented on a production system...

  • Changing the nextval of a sequence using alter sequence

    Hello experts,
    Is there any option to modify the nextval of a sequence using alter sequece command?
    Thanks in advance.
    J.Prakash

    Hi
    I do not think so there is any direct way to modify the nextval of a sequence, only workaround i can think of is firing two DDL
    alter sequence dumm increment by 10
    alter sequence dumm increment by 1Where first alter command would increment the nextval to (currentvalue + incement value) and second alter command would reset the increment to its original value in my case 1

  • Generating a new sequence using another sequence

    Hi All,
    I wish to generate a new sequence file from some external text file/XML file/seq file itself.... can I possibly do it???

    I have created a TestStand sequence that creates another sequence and inserts and configures a Message popup step.  Its not complete, but it does run (as long as you dont have a sequence of similar name loaded).
    The sequence is saved as "C:\temp\Steves.seq"
    My sequence makes calls to the TestStand API from within TestStand using the Automation Adapter but you can make similar calls from all of the other enviroments listed in the Adapters drop down.
    Its really to give you a feel for the sort of things you need to do to create a sequence on the fly.  NI should be able to give you some quality examples.

  • How to use A RowSet with an Oracle sequence

    Hi,
    I created a RowSet with the RowSet wizard and it asked me if I wanted to use database created primary keys. I'm using Oracle so I selected this option and want to use Oracle sequences. But I don't find where should I configure the name of the Oracle sequence. Accordingly I cannot insert through the RowSet.

    There is NO way to use a mouse with the iPad, you will have to either use your finger or a stylus to navigate around the screen.

  • Oracle Sequence Vs autoincrement feature in cold fusion-Weird error!!!

    When a oracle sequence is used with cold fusion there is a problem with sequence generation. It generates sequence
    like "5,4,6,5...."etc. It works fine when using the autoincrement feature. Our application demands using the sequence from oracle.
    Have you come across any problem as this? Can anyone tell me if there is any disadvantage using oracle sequence with cold fusion.
    Please let me know the disadvantages of the same if any...
    Thanks!

    This was definitely the right answer, I thought ODAC was already installed on the server, but apparently not. I installed the 64-bit OCAC XCopy version on the server and now it works.

    mean 1-21-41-61 is it possible due to if lost connection opened from java for oracle thro' OC4J ? will it keep cache ?or lost ? is it really time out error?

    i think i may be having the same problem. My table is savings entries out of order. I would assume that each row saved would be in sequence number order...instead it goes from like 963, 964, 678, 679, ....??? wonder why it would place new entries in front of older entries in the table???

  • How to use Oracle DB Sequence to Generate Primary Key Values?

    Dear Members,
    I am using Oracle JDev V 11.1.2.1.0 and Oracle 11g XE Database.
    I have followed the below steps:-
    1/ Created an EmployeesEO
    2/ Created an EmployeesVO
    3/ Created a JSPX Page
    4/ On the JSPX Page I have dragged the EmployeesVO and created it in ADF Table Format.
    On this page when I create a new record, I want to generate employee id automatically based on a sequence which is created in the database of the HR Schema.
    Please let me know how to achieve the above requirement.

  • Using oracle db sequence for auto generating of PKs for CMP entity beans

    Hi,
    I have read quite a number of threads about (auto) generation of keys for primary keys for the CMP entity beans.
    My requirement is I am migrating an application deployed on Weblogic to oc4j. The application is using cmp entity beans with auto key generation using a sequence in the Oracle db. This is specified in weblogic-cmp-rdbms-jar.xml file like below:
    <automatic-key-generation>
    <generator-type>Oracle</generator-type>
    <generator-name>REPUSER.DEPT_REPORT_SEQ</generator-name>
    <key-cache-size>1</key-cache-size>
    </automatic-key-generation>
    In the ejb-jar.xml, it is specified as:
    <prim-key-class>java.lang.Integer</prim-key-class>
    <primkey-field>id</primkey-field>
    Now, I need to migrate this to oc4j. Can somebody suggest me options and clarify my questions kindly?
    1) I have read articles that say that in the ejb-jar.xml, we need to specify <prim-key-class>java.lang.Object</prim-key-class> and this will create a column called 'autoid' in the respective entity table in the Oracle db.
    - How can I use this to assign the value to my primary field, say, id?
    2) Now, with the latest oc4j, can I use Oracle database sequence as the key generator for the values of the PKs just by specifying in the xml descriptor ejb-jar.xml?
    2.a) If yes, is there any article that explains with the code?
    2.b) If no, what are the alternatives I have?
    I have read many discussions that say that we can create a stateless session bean that can lookup the database sequence using simple JDBC call to return the nextval of the sequence. The SSB should be called in the ejbCreate() of the entity bean.
    My related question is, what is recommended for oc4j? What are limitations of the various options for the latest oc4j available?
    How should I go about deploying this kind of ejbs in oc4j?
    Any help and pointers are welcome. Please help.
    Thanks a lot.
    Vadi

    Hello ,
    Instead of exposing a get/set method for each arribute of your bean (corresponding to database table) expose only one object.
    For example
    public class CustomerBean implements javax.ejb.EntityBean{
    private CustomerVO objCustomer;
    private String customerName;
    private String customerMail;
    private String customerType;
    public CustomerVO getCustomer(){
    return this.objCustomer;
    public void setCustomer(CustomerVO objCustomer){
    this.objCustomer = objCustomer;
    public void ejbStore(){
    customerName = objCustomer.getName();
    customerMail = objCustomer.getMail();
    customerType = objCustomer.getType();

  • JPA: Oracle Sequence Generator not up to date

    Hi,
    I'm using the JPA Oracle Sequence Generator in one of my JPA classes:
    @Entity
    @Table(name = "DACC_COST_TYPE")
    public class JPACostType implements Serializable {
    @SequenceGenerator(name = "CostTypeGenerator", sequenceName = "DACC_COST_TYPE_SEQ")
        @Column(name = "ID_COST_TYPE")
        @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.SEQUENCE, generator = "CostTypeGenerator")
        private Integer idCostType;
    In order to persist a new object I perform the following code:
    @PersistenceContext
    private EntityManager em;
    JPACostType myJPA = new JPACostType();
    myJPA.setIdCostType = null;
    em.merge(myJPA);
    em.flush();
    Normally this works fine. But after deploying the app there sometimes happens an error:
    Caused by: javax.persistence.PersistenceException: SQLException while inserting entity {com.karmann.dacc.ejb.busilog.jpa.JPACostType(idCostType=4)}.

    ... 52 more
    Caused by: java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00001: unique constraint (AEMA.DACC_COST_TYPE_PK) violated
    Obviously JPA does not fetch the new key by accessing the Oracle sequence. This documents "next value = 5". Does JPA fetch the new key from its cache? Is there any possibility to avoid this?
    Thanks for each hint,
    Christoph

    Hello Christoph Schäfer  ,
    I am stuck with a similar issue. I was able to save mutiple entries and there has not been much change to my JPA. I added new entities and new sequences.
    Now, I get the error Caused by: javax.persistence.PersistenceException: java.sql.SQLException: ORA-02289: Sequence ist nicht vorhanden.
    I have checked the name of sequence and sequence next val on the DB. It works on DB but when i execute it from ejb, it gives me thsi error. Now, it gives the error for all previously working JPA entities.
    I have also provided allocationSize = 1 for all entities.
    Please let me know, possible cause/solution to this issue.
    thank you.

  • Cannot get Oracle sequence to be used with SQL Loader direct path load.

    I attempted to load approximately 3 million rows from a flat file into a 10g database using SQL Loader direct path load. In order to generate a primary key for each of these rows I used a simple SQL expression which gets the next number of an Oracle sequence and assigned that to my primary key column inside the control file. The strange thing is no primary key was generated for each of these columns as I see the sequence was not advanced. Furthermore when I try to run a query to find the count on those rows which have this column as NOT NULL ,I get the total of all the rows even though on inspection this column is empty in each of the rows.
    As far as I know, in the control file for a direct path load I am able to use a SQL Expression that returns simple scalar data which a NEXTVAL on a sequence does. (Oreilly Oracle SQL Loader The Definitive Guide p.184)
    Does anybody why my primary key was not generated and furthermore why is this column in a query appear to be NOT NULL when in fact it has nothing in it?

    Daniel,
    I appreciate your response alot.
    Now a follow on. You say that SQL*Loader is the fastest way to get data into Oracle Spatial even though the conventional path. How does SQL*Loader do this? Doesn't it use OCI?
    I just can't help but think that coverting my data to SQL*Loader format, and then having it parse it and send it to the database in some form must be slower than me just sending whatever SQL Loader sends to the DB myself using OCI. Am I missing something?
    The SQL Loader documentation seems to suggest that SQL*Loader just turns the input into alot of INSERT stateemnts. If so, can't I just do this?
    My performance with OCI and INSERT statements isn't very good, but I believe I am doing one transaction per insert. Might I be as well off to concentrate on fine tuning my OCI based code using INSERTs?
    I will actually do some time tests myself, but I would appreciate your opinion.
    Once again thanks for the great info you have provided.

  • How to use an Oracle sequence with BC4J ?

    I'm using Business Components for Java (BC4J) with JDeveloper 3.0.
    In my database I need to insert a unique ID for each record inserted (a user ID).
    I know Oracle can generate automatically this munbers, using a sequence.
    How can I insert it automatically in the BC4J view?
    The user should be able to edit this number, since it's for identification inside the system.
    Thanks!

    This is what I got from another mailing list.
    It worked for me, try it!
    Here's a code example that works for the customer table in the online order sample application that ships with jdeveloper 3. You need to override the entity's create() method (when you generate the entity you need to
    generate a create() method - check "create method" in the Java tab of the entity wizard).
    public void create(AttributeList attributeList) {
    super.create(attributeList);
    SequenceImpl s = new SequenceImpl("customer_seq", getDBTransaction());
    Integer next = (Integer)s.getData();
    setId(new Number(next.intValue()));
    }
