Generating Computer Name automatically without "-"

Hi,
I am generating PC name with Sysprep unattend and setup generates PC name automatically based on Organization /Owner information .... but it adds a hyphen "-" after organization /user and then appends a random number , all I need to know if its
possible to omit "-" in PC name.?
Example 1234567-xyzxyz
Here 8th character is "-" which I don't want to have but appended automatically.
N.A.Malik

Hi,
I am afraid this is not possible to omit "-" in computer name.
Here is the Help file articles:
Computer Name:
Specifies the computer name used to access the computer from the network. If
ComputerName is empty or missing, the user must enter a computer  name in Windows Welcome.
If you set this value to an asterisk (*), a random computer name is  generated. This random name has at most 8 characters from the
RegisteredOwner and/or
RegisteredOrganization strings plus random characters.
Computer_name is a string with a maximum length of 15 characters.
I think the "-" here is generated automatically to distinguish the two different parts in the computer name.
Best regards

  • Computer name automatically changed

Hi. When i went to my iMac this morning it had a window saying something like
"The computer name *the name I have called my computer* already exists. It has been changed to *the name I have called my computer 2*."
It has never done this before and the name has in fact changed. I am a little concerned as I haven't asked it to do this. Has anybody got any ideas how and why this has happened. Is it anything to do with hacking.
Thanks in advance for any help

  • Computer name change automatic

    Hi Community
my macs change the Computer name automatic. in the System Setings / Share / Computername show me the mac the Correct one. But in the terminal with the command "hostname" shows me something diferent. but when I change the computername in the terminal with sudo hostname "correct name", after restart it change the computername again.
This Problem happen on a iMac 27", Mac mini, Mac Book air und Mac Book Pro.
I think its somthing wrong with the osx os. With Windows or Unix os i Never seen this Problem befor.
    regards

the biggest problem is, when the mac join to the open directory LDAP. without rename in the terminal he think his name is a difrent one. and the mac login with his wrong name to the server. if i have a problem with the logins. i have no chance to find the computer who make the problem. so its necessary that the name are always the same. not one time this name and after next reboot a diffrent one.

  • VM-Type Computer Name

I am trying to deploy VMs with MDT but Sysprep breaks because VMWare machine names are generated automatically with very long strings with spaces (it is due to the customization file as i use the service tag to generate computer names).
I use the same naming convention for Desktop and laptops (WK-ServiceTag and LT-ServiceTag), VMs have very long strings for service tags so it makes the computer name faulty.
I am trying to make an exception and have MDT ask for a computer name if the deployed machine is a VM but it does not work, the VM name is still automatically generated.
Can someone see what am i missing in my customization file:

  • Computer Name With Number

I was a beta tester of Yosemite and recently updated to retail.  This happened while I was a beta tester and I thought it would go away, but it hasn't.  My computer name is being followed by a (#) that continues to increase for no reason (e.g. (1), (2), (3), etc.) - any ideas?

I'm having the same issue with my iMac (early 2008) and MacBook Pro (2010). It's very weird, both machines insist on appending numbers in parentheses to the end of the Computer name: in the Sharing preference panel. However the name  given beneath that in the message "Computers on your local network can access your computer at: <computer-name>.local" does not include the number, just the normal hostname.local. Also, using hostname command in terminal returns the regular <computer-name>.local without a number.
If I remove the (n) at the end of the Computer name: field it only lasts a few seconds before changing back to a number (though the number is not always the same as before, sometimes it goes to (2) or (3) rather than the (4) it was originally.
If I open a Finder window with the sidebar showing I see under Devices an entry for "<computer-name> (4)" and under Shared it shows:
    <computer-name>
    <computer-name> (2)
    <computer-name> (3)
I have screen and file sharing enabled, I tried switching them off and on again, I've tried rebooting, nothing seems to stop it appending the number and I can't get rid of the <computer-name> (2) and <computer-name> (3) entries under Shared either.

  • How to get the computer name in a text box automatically?

    Hi,
I am using flash cs4 (AS3). How can I get the computer name/username in a text box created for grabbing Username from the computer and show it in the username textbox automatically?
    Thanks.

You can't running a SWF on a webpage. Can you imagine if a SWF had access to that OS-level information? It breaches everything Flash, browsers and the web stands for, which is "not being an application", therefore it has absolutely no access to your computer. Especially information like your username.
If you're running a flash projector, that's different. Not that a projector can do that either, but projectors are applications and can be extended by things like MDM Zinc and ScreenTime mProjector. Going that route opens up the constraints on Flash Projectors and lets you tap into things like .dlls. Only via that route are you going to be able to get at such a low level item like the current logged on user.

  • Automatically name computers using existing computer name

In my environment, I have brand new computers to be imaged.  The computer name needs to consist of the room number and the serial number.
I am utilizing the Collection Variables within All Unknown Computers collection to define the room number.  And I am using CustomSettings.ini to automatically grab the serial number and combining that to the room number to OSDComputerName.
    That is working perfectly fine.
My question is how to automatically use existing computer name as the name of the re-imaged computer?
If I use the same task sequence, because the computer is no longer an unknown computer, it doesn't prompt me for the room number.  The computer name ended up containing the variable %roomnum% plus the serial number.  I do not want SCCM to prompt
me for anything but automatically use the existing computer name.
    Please advise.

Maybe I am missing a step.
This is my current CustomSettings.ini file
    [Settings]
    Priority=Init, Default
    Properties=ComputerSerialNumber
    [Init]
    ComputerSerialNumber=#Left("%SerialNumber%",7)#
    [Default]
    OSDComputerName=%RoomNumber%%ComputerSerialNumber%
    OSInstall=Y
    SkipCapture=YES
    SkipAdminPassword=NO
The variable %RoomNum% is defined in the All Unknown Computer collection and a prompt appears for me to manually enter that information before imaging the computer the first time.
But when I reimage an existing computer, I get no prompt and because the variable is not defined, the final computer name because %RoomNumber%9999999, which is longer than 15 characters and so the task sequence fails.
How and where in the task sequence do I define: if this is not an unknown computer, then use existing computername?
I also notice that I can add a step called "Capture Windows Settings-Migrate Computer Name".  Is this the step that I need?  Where in the task sequence should it be added to?
Here is a section of my task sequence. I didn't change much from the default created MDT Task Sequence.

  • My iMac's computer name keeps changing automatically after Yosemite upgrade

This started happening once I upgraded my iMac to Yosemite. It will add numbers to the name of my iMac.
Example: It starts off as say "My iMac"
Then a half day later, it changes to "My iMac (2)"
Then the next day it will be "My iMac (3)"
And if I open the Finder window, it will show "My iMac" and "My iMac (2)" under "Shared" but if you click on them, nothing happens.
When I go to System Preferences > Sharing the computer name will have the number there "My iMac (3)" and say it can be found as MyiMac-3.local
If I change it back to just "My iMac", the number process starts all over again. I even tried naming the iMac something it was never named before and the same process occurs with the adding of the numbers.
Anyone know how I can fix this?

Have had the same issue with an iMac and MacBook Pro, both with Yosemite (MacBook upgraded from the Yosemite public beta). Both previously had Mavericks, and at one time or another would have had both Ethernet cable and Wifi on. This issue has only occurred since the upgrade to Yosemite. I do not use iCloud, so I believe that may be irrelevant and merely coincidental.
The solution provided by an Apple Care rep seems to have resolved the issue. Has stuck now on both machines for the last few hours. Time will tell for certain, but here's what we did:
    - in System Preferences > Sharing, remove the (2) [or whatever is extra; mine was iMac (2), so I removed the (2)
    - exit Preferences
    - shutdown
    - restart machine in Recovery mode (machine off, press and hold Command + R, power on, when Apple logo appears release keys)
    - may take a few minutes to boot (depends on machine generation/speed, RAM and such)
    - open Disk Utility
    - select the OS disk (mine was Macintosh HD; selected the 'indented' item)
    - run Verify Disk Permissions
    - when finished run Repair Disk Permissions
    - restart
On the MacBook I tried turning on Wifi and so far so good.
    Banish the deux!

  • I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes

I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes, and Itunes can't find my Ipad. [email protected]

Ok, if reinstalling iTunes as suggested above does not resolve the issue of iTunes recognising the iPad then try this -
Firstly, make sure that your device is not hidden (left hand pane). If it just reads device then toggle between SHOW and HIDE.
Secondly, try all the other ports on your computer, even a number of times.
Thirdly, make sure your lead /connections are no faulty.
Fourthly, if you have another computer try plugging your device into it without taking any action, give it a moment, remove it and try it back in your other computer again.
Failing all that, see here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
And failing all that put the device into Recovery mode. See here and note the paragraph 'If you restore from a different computer.... ' down near the bottom of the page -
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/
As for making your new laptop your 'home computer' follow these instructions -
    1. Without connecting your iPad to your computer -
    A) Install iTunes / make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
    B) Go to the Store tab and click on "Authorise This Computer".
    C) Go to Edit, click on Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and click on Devices. Put a check mark in the box next to "Prevent  iPods/iPhones/iPads from syncing automatically". Click OK and close iTunes.
    2.  Connect your iPad to your computer -
    A) Start iTunes (it will not start automatically because of the action at 1(C) above).
    B) Right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select "Transfer purchases".
    C) When the transfer has completed, right click on your iPad again and select "Backup".
    D) When the backup has completed, left click on your iPad, click on the Apps tab, and put a check mark in the box next to "Sync Apps", and then click on "Apply" (bottom right).
    E) Unless you want to always do a manual sync (as I do), go back to Edit, Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and uncheck the box next to "Prevent your iPod.....".
    F) Finally, on your iPad, check that everything is syncing properly. If not, go back to iTunes and check all settings.
NB You should not lose any apps. However, any 'purchased' missing apps can be downloaded again FOC. As with updates, this must be done with the Apple ID under which they were originally 'purchased'.
Also see here as to moving your music to your new computer -

  • WDS keep existing computer name

    Hello,
We have WDS up and running on a recently setup server.  Most of it is all defaults apart from the fact that we have added boot images and system images.  We have an unattend file with the %MACHINENAME% in it, but for some reason it always generates
a random name based on the info in the AD DS tab in the WDS server properties:
    %61Username%#
Why would a reimaged computer not take the existing name if the unattend file says to do so?
Unattend file is called OOBEunattend.xml located in E:\Answer Files\WdsClientUnattend\
This is the first part that includes the %MACHINENAME% variable.

    Hi,
    When
ComputerName is set to an asterisk (*) or is an empty string, a
random computer name will be generated.
    <ComputerName>%MACHINENAME%</ComputerName>
Here change the string “%MACHINENAME%” the name you want to assign without “%”.
    Example:
    <ComputerName>MyComputer</ComputerName>
If the answer file is indeed written like this, please check setupact.log under directory:
    C:\Windows\Panther
    Hope this helps.

  • Setting computer name on a VM created from template (SCSM, SCVMM and SCORCH)

We've set up some basic server provisioning automation to see how it works. It's a fairly simple setup so far:
    1. User submits ticket via the SCSM portal; the ticket includes the desired machine name.
    2. Ticket requires our team's approval before the workflow continues into Orchestrator.
    3. If approved, an Orchestrator runbook is kicked off, using SCVMM to create the server from a template.
The resulting server has the correct machine name in SCVMM, but the machine name inside the OS is randomly generated (the template currently has * in OS Configuraiton -> Identity Information in the VM Template properties).
What's the best way to make the computer name inside the OS reflect the desired machine name? I can think of a number of ways we could accomplish this, but I don't know SCORCH/VMM that well yet. I'm wondering if I have overlooked something simple inside
the existing process we're using. I suspect that, if there is an easy solution, it would lie in VMM.
Many thanks for your time and consideration.

I've got the Guest OS Profile partially working, but frustratingly, it doesn't seem to be applying all of the settings.
Here is what I have done so far:
    1. A Guest OS Profile has been set up which includes all of the settings I am currently trying to test: domain join, feature installation (nothing fancy for now, just Powershell and Telnet Client), and a KMS key for Server 2012.,
    2. Orchestrator Runbook gets the existing OS Profile, creates a new one based on the VM, and uses the parameter -ComputerName to pass the name of the VM to the Guest OS Profile. The new Guest OS PRofile is showing up correctly in VMM, with the right settings.
    3. The runbook then deploys the new VM from template, using the newly set up Guest OS Profile. The machine is set up correctly, and will boot. Not all of the settings from the Guest OS Profile transfer over, however. The Domain Join and KMS portions work
without a problem. The features I have tried to add are not installed, though, and the computer name remains randomly generated.
I know the Guest OS Profile must be getting used, since the machine gets domain joined; the template does not include domain join credentials. What I can't work out is why some of the settings are being applied while others are not.

    Hi Carsten,
    thank you for your answers.
you have to configure your button to submit the request "download". so give your
button the name "download" - you can set the display name like you want - but the >>"internal" name must be "download". Then you can use your condition as described.
... and .. the button must not have a target ...Sorry I think I was not clear enough on this. I allready did what you described without success. I thought there was some typo but I could not find one.
The button name is set to download and the condition is 'Request = Expression 1' in the select list and download in the textarea.
Unfortunately the process does not execute with this condition whereas it is executed when there is no condition. So I think there has to be some typo I did not recognized so I have to search again.
just make sure in your link that the :REQUEST is download
    f?p=&APP:ID.:&APP_PAGE_ID.:&SESSION.:download:...
("download" is the request parameter)Thank you, that's what I searched.
    Regards
    Markus
