Generics and ClassCastException

Does anyone know why in the following code map.get("one").getClass() is the only line which throws ClassCastException.
        Map<Integer, Integer> map = new HashMap<Integer, Integer>();
        map.put(1, 1);
        System.out.println("map.get(1) =" + map.get(1));
        Object obj = map;
        Map<String, Number> map2 = (Map<String, Number>) obj;
        map2.put("one", 1L);
        System.out.println("map2.get(1) =" + map2.get(1));
        System.out.println("map2.get(one) =" + map2.get("one"));
        Map<String, Integer> map3 = (Map<String, Integer>) obj;
        System.out.println("map3.get(1) =" + map3.get(1));
        // Doesn't throw ClassCastException even though the return value is a Long, not Integer.
        Object objOne = map3.get("one");
        System.out.println("map3.get(one) =" + map3.get("one") + ", " + objOne.getClass());
        try {
            // throws ClassCastException ????.
            System.out.println("map3.get(one).getClass() =" + map3.get("one").getClass());
        } catch (ClassCastException e) {
            System.out.println("map3.get(one).getClass() throws " + e);
   }I have JDK 1.5.0_02

Map<String, Integer> map3 = (Map<String,<String, Integer>) obj;
System.out.println("map3.get(1) =" +
(1) =" + map3.get(1));
// Doesn't throw ClassCastException even
ion even though the return value is a Long, not
Integer.
Object objOne = map3.get("one");
System.out.println("map3.get(one) =" +
ne) =" + map3.get("one") + ", " +
objOne.getClass());
try {
// throws ClassCastException ????.
System.out.println("map3.get(one).getClass()
etClass() =" + map3.get("one").getClass());
} catch (ClassCastException e) {
System.out.println("map3.get(one).getClass()
etClass() throws " + e);
I have JDK 1.5.0_02
Okay, now that I have my X-Ray Specs on, I see the longs. At first, I was surprised
by the class cast, but what I think is happening is that the expression:
map3.get("one")Has an implicit cast in it, thanks to generics:
((Integer)map3.get("one"))And it's that cast that's generating the runtime exception. Now, how do folks
dump out class files in readable format? I'd like to see to myself...

  • Generic and Inheritance, how to use them together?

    Hi guys, I am trynig to design some components, and they will use both Generics and Inheritance.
    Basically I have a class
    public class GModel <C>{
        protected C data;
        public C getData(){return data;}
    }//And its subclass
    public class ABCModel <C> extends GModel{
    }//On my guess, when I do
    ABCModel abcModel = new ABCModel<MyObject>();The data attribute should be from MyObject type, is it right?
    So, usign the netbeans when I do
    MyObject obj = abcModel.getData();I should not use any casting, since the generics would tell that return object from getDta would be the MyObject.
    Is this right? If yes; did someone try to do that on netbeans?
    Thanks and Regards

    public class GModel <C>{
    public class ABCModel <C> extends GModel{public class ABCModel <C> extends GModel<C>{

  • Casting, generics and unchecked expressions

    Hi
    I'm trying to access a vector of Recommendations held by a Person object, but I don't want to allow direct access to the vector, just the information contained in it
    public Vector<Recommendation> getRecommendations() {
         return((Vector<Recommendation>)recList.clone());
    }The trouble I'm having is that I have to cast the recList.clone() as a Vector<Recommendation> to return a compatible type.
    When I do this, the source compiles with a warning: unchecked cast.
    Could someone explain an unchecked cast and give me a pointer to solving this please? I've not managed to find anything about combining generics and clones in my books. Is there another way of returning a copy of the vector? All I want to do is make the objects in the vector available for viewing, via processing in a servlet, to a jsp.
    Thanks in advance

    YoGee wrote:
    What you are exposing is a Vector with a reference to a clone of the internal data array, you are not cloning the elements in that data array. So basically if you modify an element in one Vector chances are it will be reflected in the other (assuming the element is mutable).Thanks for the reply.
    I should have said that what I want to achieve is:
    make the Vector<Recommendation>recList contents available for viewing, but not expose the objects so that they are able to be changed - so what I have done is not good!
    after some thought, what I really want is this:
    If what you actually want to achieve is a deep clone (i.e. clone the elements in the internal data array) you need to do it yourself by looping through the Vector and cloning each element in it (assuming the elements implement clone properly)so thanks for the help!

  • Difference bw the data staging of generic and appli specefic data sources

    Hi,
       Can anyone tell the difference between data staging of generic and appl specific data sources. Like we know that LO data stage in queued delta, update queue and BW delta queue, i want to know actually where the generic data stages before it is loaded into BW.
    Thanks.

    Generic data sources are based on either a DB table/view, a function module or an ABAP query. So normally the data stages in the corresponding DB tables or you calculate it at extraction time. There is no update queue like in LO.

  • Generic and Flat file extraction

    Hi experts
    can any body send the Real time scenario for Generic and flat file extraction with examples.
    Thanks and regrds,
    satya

    Hi,
    Generic extraction is an extraction where you create a Generic DS and based upon this you would be extracting the data from R/3, which means you would have an source system to extract the generic data from the generic data source.
    Flact file extraction is an extraction where you need not have to connect to source
    system, in this case you source system would be PC, here you would be designing an infosource based up on the fields/columns of your flat file and mapping the corresponding the infoojects to it.. and update rules..
    and you would be loading/extracting the data from the file as a source..
    These two things are different in nature and usage..
    Hope this helps..
    assign points if useful..
    cheers,
    Pattan.

  • Using generics and J2SE together with JSF

    Hi
    Has anybody experience with using JSF together with J2SE 1.5? Especially generics? I would like to use generics and other improvements from J2SE in the model objects.
    Thnaks in advance ... Rick

    JSF 1.1 is specified for J2SE 5, and the new specification (JSF 1.2 and JSP 2.1) does not include generics.
    If you are talking in terms of ValueBindings or MethodBindings, there really isn't any point since the implementation could only make the cast for you; and it would still not be able to garuantee type safety (the only reason to use generics).
    That's not to say you couldn't use generics in your own development, but I don't think you will see generics incorporated into the specification any time soon.

  • Generic and Variant Article in IDOC for EDI810

    Friends,
    i have an issue with processing the EDI810 with both generic and variant articles in the IDOC.
    i am testing the Idoc, but it fails. when i delete the generic article from the EDi810 and process the IDoc, the invoice is getting posted.
    is it that the vendor has to send otr EDI team has to suppress the generic articles and send only Variant areticle to SAP?
    how does it work
    Please help
    Regards

    In MM43 under Basic Data (uppermost portion), if you input a generic article, only the article will be displayed. but if you input a variant article, its generic article will be displayed on top of it...
    Its field name is RMMW1-VARNR. The generic article is RMMW1-MATNR.

  • Difference between Generic and Generating functions

    Hi,
    Can any body explain me the difference between Generic and Generating functions? Do also let me kwno which Standard functions are Genereic and which are Generating/
    Regards,
    Pranshu

    Hi Pranshu,
    All functions (regardless of whether they are standard or user-defined functions) that do not have input values are refered to as Generating Functions (Constant, Sender, Receiver and CopyValue() are generating functions). All other functions are generic.
    So, the standard XI functions can be generic or generating.
    Hope this helps

  • Question regarding generics and collections

    Hi,
    I am stuying the Sierra and Bates book for SCJP.
    One particular answer to a question in it is puzzling me at the moment:
    Given a method as
    public static <E extends Number> List<E> process(List<E> nums)
    A programmer wants to use this method like this:
    //INSERT DECLARATION HERE
    output = process(input)
    which pairs of delcarations could be placed at //INSERT DECLARATION HERE to allow this to compile.
    Correct answers given as :
    ArrayList<integer> input = null;
    List<Integer> output = null;
    List<Number> input = null;
    List<Number> output = null;
    List<Integer> input = null;
    List<Integer> output = null;
    My main problem is understanding what this line means:
    public static <E extends Number> List<E> process(List<E> nums)
    How do I read this? I assume <E extends Number>List<E> all relates to the return type?
    If it just said List<E> I would read it as saying the return type must be a List than can only accept objects of type E but I'm confused by the extra
    part before it.
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks

    Have you seen generics before? E is a type variable. If the method had the simpler definition:
    <E> List<E> process(List<E> nums)This would mean that E could be replaced by any type, like you had an unbounded number of definitions:
    List<A> process(List<A> nums)
    List<B> process(List<B> nums)
    List<C> process(List<C> nums)
    ...For every possible type: A, B, C, ...
    But E has the bound "extends Number" which mean that this is like have the definitions:
    List<Number> process(List<Number> nums)
    List<Integer> process(List<Integer> nums)
    List<Long> process(List<Long> nums)
    ...For Number and every subclass of Number.

  • WSAD 5, xerces, datasource and classcastexception issue

    I am running into an issue trying to run my code once I upgraded from WDAD 5.0 to WSAD 5.01. I am getting the error below when I try and connect to my DataSource. This all was working fine before I upgraded. It looks like an issue with the xerces.jar file because if I take out the JAXP stuff in the xerces.jar file I work fine. But I need the JAXP stuff because I am doing messaging. Anyone have any ideas?

  • A Listener solution based on Generics and Dynamic Proxies

    Listeners are common in the java world, espacially in swing. It is easy to implement a listener, and it is easy to call an existing method that notifies all registered listeners, but it's laborious to implement this notification code itself.
    I present a small, typesafe solution called GenericListeners based on Dynamic Proxies and Generics that reduces the notification code to just a single line of code:
    IGenericListeners<FooListener> fooListeners = GenericListeners.create(FooListener.class);If FooListener looks like
    public interface FooListener {
      public onEnter(int id);
      public onExit();
    }then you can register and call Listeners with
    fooListeners.addListener(foo);
    fooListeners.call().onEnter(1);If you are interested, please have a look at
    http://www.sebastian-baltes.de/SebWiki/Wiki.jsp?page=GenericListeners
    What do you think about this?

    Interesting point, and so I've done some tests:
    0:00:01.391 - plainest implementation
    0:00:02.469 - GenericListeners
    0:00:03.422 - javax.swing.event.EventListenerListI used a test that registers a listener and calls it 10,000,000 times in a for loop on Java 6, AMD Athlon 3000.
    I would say that GenericListeners performs well, especially compared to the EventListenerList that is used in all swing components. The problem with EventListenerList is that it stores different classes of listeners at once and has to find the right ones every time you raise an event. For my tests, I only stored one single listener into the list.
    You can imagine how bad the performance of the swing implementation would be if you have a real life example with a lot of different listener classes.

  • HS generic and long datatypes in Oracle 8i

    I have a problem importing LONG datatype columns
    from Hyperion Pillar to Oracle (version 8.1.6.0.0) using
    the (Hyperion supplied) ODBC driver and generic HS.
    The error message I get is
    ORA-03001: unimplemented feature
    ORA-02063: preceding line from PILLAR.WORLD
    From the message it seems clear that Oracle cannot
    deal with longs using generic connectivity (at least
    in v. 8.1.6).
    My questions:
    1) Is there a workaround ?
    2) Does this work in 9i ?
    Notes:
    1) The problem is not with the ODBC driver, as I
    can see the long datatype columns using another
    tool which connects to Pillar via ODBC.
    2) HS has been set up correctly because all datatypes
    other than long can be viewed in Oracle without any
    problems.
    3) Operating System: Windows NT 4.00.1381
    Any help would be much appreciated!
    Kailash.

    Thanks for the reply.
    Pillar LONGS (or MEMO, as they are referred to in Pillar)
    map to ODBC SQL_LONGVARCHAR. So it appears that the
    mapping is OK, and that SELECTing from these columns
    should be possible via generic connectivity.
    Any other ideas on what may be wrong? Any help is
    much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kailash.

    Need mapping link / functoids / XSLT code for this standard input 850 message.
    Need Urgently.

    Thanks &amp; Best Regards, Siddharth

    Hi John,
    Actually I need to
    put a unique check on PO1:07 element and need to add the respective PO1:02 element.
    1st PO1:07 = KOW-20392-10
    1st PO1:02 = 93
    2nd PO1:07 = ABX-2001
    2nd PO1:02 = 25
    3rd PO1:07 = ABX-2001
    3rd PO1:02 = 4
    4th PO1:07 = KOW-20392-10
    4th PO1:02 = 2
    Then as PO1:07 for 1st and 4th are same, then in the output there should be one <LineItems> with <PONumber> as KOW-20392-10 and <Quantity> should be added as 93+2 = 95
    Similarly as PO1:07 for 2nd and 3rd are same, then in the output there should be another <LineItems> with <PONumber> as ABX-2001 and <Quantity> should be added as 25+4 = 29
    I want to use the XSLT code but as input is X12 850 standard structure I am not able use the XSLT properly.
    It would be great if you can check the X12 4010 850 message standard structure and let us know how to implement this.
    Thanks & Best Regards
