Genius syncing, do I need it?

Each time I synk my iPhone for the appdates, it takes forever, because it goes through denius update for 5,000 songs. I noticed this when I updtaed to iOS5
Is this required? I don't use genious on iphone, can I shot it down, from syncing?

depends on how you want to isntall it. If through Boot Camp, yes. if through Fusion or Parallels, no.

Stop Genius Sync

I am very tired of iTunes sync'ing Genius to my iPhone and iPad. It takes way too long to do and has become a big annoyance. Anyone know how to kill this off?

Same here. I've read somewhere that you can't turn of genius sync when you have iTunes Match enabled.
If I really can't turn this of (it takes 25 min. every sync I do!!) I'll be forced to stop my iTunes Match subscription.
Please give us a way to turn this off. Some of us don't need this 'genius'.

How to trigger Bookmarks (Safari) syncing without the need to merge??

I found that my bookmarks were out of sync on my home Mac (although iCloud was active), after I did some sorting and cleaning on the office Mac. Since I found no other way (wait or reboot did not help), I did deactivate and then re-activate bookmarks syncing in Preferences => iCloud => Safari. This DID trigger syncing, BUT (after I was offered the option to cancel or to merge) the result was that now the sorting and cleaning work I did before was lost. In fact, it was worse because of the merge in two directions.
So the question is:
What can one do to force syncing in a way that avoids the merge?
It is really stupid that there is no option (like with MobileMe) to select the sync direction. Or did I miss that?

OK, you are correct, but this is only due to the phrasing of my last comment and not because of the quality of iCloud syncing. MobileMe was MUCH better in this respect! It DID offer the option to overwrite the data WITHOUT the need to manually delete before.
In addition, this was not the core point.
The main point is that iCloud for (at least to me) unknown reasons did stop performing its job for the bookmarks that were synced before.
I would like to know if there is an option to trigger syncing, without the need to delete manually, and then switch of and on again.

iCloud is off on both my phone and my computer.

It is saying that the iPod does not have enough free storage to sync all the items yu have selected to sync to the iPod. You need 2.48 GB more free on the iPod. You need either to select less to sync or delete some content form the iPod.

I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising - I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written :
" 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up the hard drive - would this mean all my files [over 100 gb] that are mostly in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon, would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ] ?

Authorize using the correct account name
The items you're trying to play might have been purchased using a different iTunes Store account. To determine which account was used to purchase an item, follow these steps:
Select a purchased song in your library and choose File > Get Info.
Click the Summary tab. Note the Account Name that appears in the list. This is the account name (Apple ID) you'll need to use when authorizing your computer to play this purchase.
Note: The account name that appears is the one you used when purchasing the item and does not change if the account name (Apple ID) changes.
If you've authorized the Apple ID that is shown in the Summary tab, you can check the purchase history for that Apple ID from Store > View My Account. If your purchase history does not reflect the purchase of the items in your iTunes library, consider any other Apple ID you may have created, and authorize the computer for your additional Apple ID.
If you forgot the password to one of your accounts, you can recover it using Apple's password-recovery website.

Very annoying Genius sync

Hi,
Since i subscribed to iTunes Match, everytime i sync my iPad with itunes it "syncs data with Genius". This takes 20-30 minutes everytime. The worst thing is i DON'T EVER use Genius. Every single time i sync my ipad it syncs half of the songs i have on my ipad with genius (around 3000 songs). Before activating itunes match each sync used to take around 5 minutes, including the backup.
PLEASE someone tell me how do i disable this incredibely annoying issue ?? I just want to go back to the normal syncs i had before itunes match, i don't see the point in what's hapening right now...

As i said, i've never used Genius, and it's been always turned off.
I use iTunes match, but every single time i open itunes or sync my ipad with itunes it says "sync with genius" , EVEN IF I HAVEN?T ADDED A SINGLE NEW SONG in my itunes library.
Why does itunes need to "sync with genius" or itunes match, every time, if there's not a tiny change in the library ?
The problem hasn't been fixed with the latest update.
To sum up: it takes me 5 times more to sync my ipad with itunes since i ise itunes match.

I am trying to sync 11 new songs onto my iPod, and I have over 2 GB of free space, but my computer keeps telling me I can't sync because I need more space. How can that be?

My iPod touch is not syncing correctly. I'm trying to add 11 new songs, and a message pops up telling me I need 24 more mb of space. In the bar below, it says I have over 2 gb of space free. Additionally, a playlist I was trying to add songs to is not adding the correct songs. In my iTunes, it has all the music, but when I synced, only 2 of the songs were transfered onto my actual iPod. Make sure that yo have the boxed chanced to only sync the checked music. It appears that it is trying to sync ore than those.
You can try unsycing all music and resyncing.

I updated my iPod to the new software, I had 4 or 5 Gb of photos and music each and now I have 11.5gb music, 10.6 gb photos,no space to sync, says i need an extra 9.17gb, 4th gen, pc

i downloaded the new software, there clucked update... it apparently updated my ipod but now when i try and sync some new songs, it wont let me saying that i have no free space, but i only have 16 or 17gb of stuff on my ipod, and its a 32gb one...

When you connect the iPod to your computer and click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes what is the value for the "other" category shown in the colored bargraph near the bottom of the screen? If larger than say about 1 GB, that is you problem,. You have corrupted files on your iPod. That happens sometimes with an update. To reduce the "other", you need to restore you iPod. Sometimes a restore to factory defaults/new iPod is required.
If that is not the problem what is the distribution shown?

Downloaded song won't sync to iphone, needs to be converted

I bought a song on iTunes and it downloaded to my iTunes, but it won't sync to my iPhone, the message states that the song needs to be converted. How do I do that?

Update: seems to not be linked to just a song. Un-syncing any one of apps, songs, etc. creates the error on the last step of the sync. Still no error code, but seems to stem from a copy activity of some sort from a purchase made on the phone. Went away briefly when I sync'd the mac with the 'purchased' list in iTunes.

Sync says i need 4.6g but library is only 2.8g

I just purchased a Macbook last week and have transferred over my music library. My 4g Nano used to sync just fine with my PC iTunes. But when i tried to sync it (using the erase and resync method) with my transferred library in iTunes, it says I need 4.6g (syncing music only). Then I looked at my music library and it says 2.8g at the bottom. I don't understand what is taking up so much extra memory? Is there something inefficient about my library that I can correct?

Syncing to xcode, need an earlier version of the itouch OS

I've been attempting to sync my itouch to xcode, but when i select "Use device for development", it tells me that xcode doesn't support the latest version of itouch OS. I have 3.1.3 , and the latest version that xcode says it supports is 3.1.2
either i need to install an earier version of the itouch OS on my itouch, or i need to find a newer version of xcode. But i can't find a download for these anywhere.
