Gentoo File Manager Question

I just pulled the new gentoo package from the repositories. So far, it appears to work, but I keep on getting the followign msgs printed to the console whenever I run it:
** WARNING **: Couldn't initialize mount data - automounting won't work
** WARNING **: FAM open failed, error 0--FAM will not be used
What do these msgs mean and how do I rectify them? I'm running gentoo  on fluxbox stable w/  xorg.

Well I think the mount error comes from the fact my user account doesn't have the rights to mount removable devices. I've fixed this behavior by simply telling gentoo never to mount anything.
As for the fam error, starting fam seems to help, but for some reason I need to start fam every time I want to start gentoo. Is this suppose to work this way?

  • File management questions with iPhoto 8

I am new to iPhoto, not just version 8. I need to understand a few basics about the Apple way of handling photos. First off let me say that I have a MacBook Pro and a Windows XP desktop pc. I just set up an external harddrive as my storage space for my photos. They were on my pc, but I want to take advantage of iPhoto and manage them via my mac laptop. So I formatted the external drive as a mac drive, purchased a copy of MacDrive so that my pc can read/write to this drive as well and transferred all of my photos to the external harddrive. 14 gigs. I suppose I should now delete them off my pc...
Before I moved my photos, I organized them all into appropriate folders, consolidating them and removing any duplicates that occured sometimes when I accidentally re-imported the same photos from my camera.
I imported the photos on my external harddrive into iPhoto's photo library, using the alias approach instead of having iPhoto make copies of the photos. (I don't need to waste yet another 14 gigs!) So now I have numerous Events, most of which relate directly to the folders I created for my photos. I noticed however that in some instances, iPhoto created multiple events for photos within the same folder.
    Here are my questions...
If I merge events in iPhoto, I noticed my folders do not change. Am I just messing around with the aliases, sorta like creating playlists in iTunes? Is there any way to keep things in sync between my folders and my events, so that the contents of my folders match the contents of my events, or is this unwise or unnecessary?
If after I have imported my photos into iPhoto, what happens when I merge my folders of photos on my harddrive, outside of iPhoto? Does iPhoto keep up or do I have to somehow update my iPhoto library? Refresh it? What happens when I add more photos, say with my pc? Do I have to import the new folders of photos into iPhoto each time?
I also have a question about keywords. From the demo movie I watched on apple.com, I saw that one can search for photos using keywords. In the demo, the presenter typed the name of a person and all the pictures of that person appeared. If I want to do this, does this mean I have to add for example the keyword "David" to every picture David is in? Can the name simply appear in the title for the photo and still get picked up within the search results? Is there an easy way to assign keywords to multiple photos at the same time?
Thanks for helping me start out on the right foot!
    Paul

    Dani:
You don't have to duplicate photos when using iPhoto in it normal, copy to library, mode. Once you import the files you can delete the ones used to import. However, if you're a professional then you've probably read the DAM book, Digital Asset Management, and it implies multiple backup copies.
Files imported in the alias mode retain the color profile that was added by the camera. If you edit in iPhoto then the resulting modified will will have a default profile. In my case the profile went from sRGB IEC1966-2.1 to Camera RGB Profile. But if you use Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto you can manage the profile with it.
I like iPhoto 7 much more than 6. It's editing capabilities are much improved but still no match for PS. It also writes the metadata, comments, keywords and title to the file when exporting. It also allows you to modify the EXIF Capture Date and write it to the original file.
As with any application you must have backups and backups. Also always keep a minimum of 10 GB free space, 15 or more if you'll be doing some heavy editing with PS or work with video. That's important. So that means an external FW hard drive or two for redundancy backups. That is if you're serious about it.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • File Manager Question, Airbrowser and others

    Hi There People
I am new to the BB game and have only had my Bold for 1 month and the PB for 2 weeks. I have to say that the BB telephone support is simply fantastic, even with a newbie like me.
I use the BBPB strictly for work, no games, no music, no nothing...except repair orders, small (very) repair manuals, and a parts/price list. Imagine my surprise when I tried to find the file system manager and was told by BB support it doesn't exist, and I would have to use a third party app...fine. Now I have a very simple excel made repair order that I loaded successfully into my BBPB via my desktop software. I have installed "airbrowser" successfully. My issue is that after I made a file named "Repair" and moved that excel file into it, I open airbrowser and can see this file, so far so good, but I cannot open it from that location (inside airbrowser) only from the factory PB file icon will it open, in the airbrowser there is not even a button "open" like in the OEM app.
    So my questions are :
    Is my airbrowser app defective?
For my needs, = make a simple repair order file that I can search through to find a specific customer, then find the repairs in his name.
Should airbrowser work or should I try something like "Files and Folders" that is talked about here
Should I scrap this idea, and go to something completely different (laptop), any suggestions? I am a field service tech and my needs are very basic for what I thought the machine was capable of doing. Please I really don't want a laptop.
Sorry if this post is too long as I am always trying not to forget some detail.  BTW I have used the search button and read 100 posts before writing this.
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for that !
Yup my file is a .xlsb, which from what I am thinking, might not be supported by airbrowser. So basicaly I'll need to try different excel templates that is recognized by that app.
Yes I saw the "unsupported" button but it was browned out like dissabled so I just thought it was inopperative...of course this was the first time I used the app so I didn't know how it was supposed to look.
jarviser thank you for your input, if I have more questions I will revive this thred.

  • File Management Question

This may win for "stupid question of the year" but I'll ask regardless...is there a way I can change the name of multiple picture files? Instead of going through all my 10,000 pics and changing the names 1 by 1 is there a way I can change a bunch at the same time? for example: I have decided I want to name my picture files by date-so can I somehow select a couple at a time and put in the name I want and it will just use that name with a couple of numbers after it? Please help!

You could use applescript. It's tricky.

  • File management questions.

I think I have a good grasp of Lightroom.  I use it daily.  Ever since I've had it though, I've been frustrated with the import process.  And I can't seem to find any information that discusses this particular topic.  I basically want to setup lightroom to accomplish two things while importing.  First, I want to exclude all directories/partitions in the main and import lists to ruduce clutter.  Secondly, I want lightroom to remember where I was last.  Every time I open Lightroom, I have to open numerous directories and subdirectories just to get to the folder I want to import.  Then I have to do it again on the destination side.  Please tell me that there's some kind of solution for this.  Simplification of my directory is not an option.  I have numerous drives and partions and folders and they are structured in a logical manner, when serched though, outside of Lightroom.
    Thank you,

Thank you for the reply Richard.  I'm quite weary of transfering data files via cable, for prolonged periods of time.  Since I convert NEF to DNG  from Nikon D800 files (which compounds that concern, due to the large file sizes and extended time required to process them).  I tend to shy away from that approach, due to the possibilty of data corruption.  My primary concern is to get images onto the computer as safely and swiftly as possible.  USB 3.0 has been quite helpful in that regard (but I digress).
Let me see if I uderstand you correctly.  Just as I have develop presets that I have setup to apply during the import proces, I can also create import presets for specific directory (folder) destinations.  Is that correct?
Lastly, part of my workflow consists of converting from NEF to DNG (where the DNG is intentionally deposited into the original NEF folde).  Once this is done, I go into the folder and delete the NEF files.  I was considering making two folders.  One as an NEF origination folder and the second, a DNG desitination folder.  Thereby eliminating the need to hunt for the redundant files.  What's your take on this method?
First, I strongly recommend using a fast (USB3 if you can) card reader, not a cable to the camera. By a mile!
Second, if you import to LR using a Copy operation you can leave a safety copy on the camera card until you have verified that LR import etc, and generation of an actual LR preview from the Raw content, is complete. I for paranoia reasons slide the physical write-protect tab on my (SD) camera cards to "locked" before I put them in the reader; so they are safe from even the most unlikely corruption or pilot error. So safety is not an issue, though I find LR's import completely reliable and by using it via tried-and-tested import presets there is nothing for me to get wrong. I believe copying is generally faster than moving btw.
Third, yes, import presets can record and then recall the settings of a completely manual import; or carry out a completely or partly automatic import depending on the properties (generally capture date) of the images; or do something between the two. There are opportunities for you to individualise parts of the process yourself, each time.
I don't use DNG conversion in my importing, I prefer to leave the camera Raw just as it is. But there is the option in the Import setup, to archive a separate, second copy to another folder location at the same time. In the case where you are converting NEF to DNG, you could set LR to Copy from the card reader, converting to DNG on the fly, into location A - optionally saving a separate copy into location B (all this is recorded into the import preset). If opted for, the copy in location B will be an unconverted NEF. You have an unconverted NEF anyway, though, still on the camera card - in the unlikely event that the DNG conversion did not succeed somehow.

  • Question about Adding External Storage/File Management

I am using LR5.2 on mid-2011 MBA. Before long I will run out of space on the HD. I have one catalog of about 16K photos. I would like to purchase external hard drive for additional storage. I use Time Machine for backup. What is the best way to manage the additional storage and keep the catalog intact?
    1) I currently have photos organized by date? i.e., Pictures/2013/2013-10-10/ etc. Should I keep this file organization as it is and then when importing new photos, select 'copy' from SD card and select 'Location' as new external drive?
    OR
    2) Should I move all photos to new backup drive to keep all files stored together? Would this be better for long term file management?
Any recommendations for best practices? Or is there a better to organize photos for current and future use?
Also, does the catalog stay in the same location under either 1) or 2)
    Thanks in advance

I would suggest creating a root folder on the EHD. You will need to keep your EHD connected when working with Lightroom. It will show up like your Mac HD with the green light in the left hand panel.
Leave everything where it is for the time being but you may want to drag older folders to the EHD over time, as importing new photos, generating previews and using the develop module will usually be faster on the main flash drive of the MBA.
Don’t use Finder to move files/folders around. Always use the Lightroom Library and the database of files and your develop settings (catalog) will not get corrupted.

  • How do I... (1) "play" a ppt; (2) "see" my sub-folders and their files in "Docs To Go" or "File Manager"?

This is written for the Playbook blog writer in the hope that he will see it here and post a blog answer. However, a reply from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks.
[2 questions about PPBB OS 2.0+]
Hi. Thanks for your very informative blog. I would appreciate it if you would consider writing blog tips to answer the following:
    1) Why can't I organize my files in "Documents" or "File Manager" to "see" them in their sub-folders?
BBPB allows me to create SUB folders in the Documents folder, through my pc's access to the "Documents" folder in the Playbook. However, then I cannot "see" these created sub-folders on my BBPB after I disconnect my BBPB from my PC.
All the files I downloaded into these "sub" folders end up all together in the file list in "DOCS TO GO", either in "Documents" or "Music" or "Video" or "Pictures" ---- but these files are NOT separated into the sub-folders I created. The same thing happens in "FILE MANAGER" i.e. all files on the Playbook are in ONE place only.
Is the Playbook OS ever going to allow one to view sub-folders and what is in them, other than using the pc to do it? For example, it would be desirable to put all my ppt files into one folder.
    2) How do I "play" a PPT file in the BBPB?
The BBPB "User Guide" says that I can "view, edit, or play" Powerpoint Presentations. However, although it describes how to "view" or "edit" individual slides, it does not say how to "play" ("run") a slideshow. How do you "play" a self-running slideshow?
For example, in Windows, you can click "play.bat" (in a saved "presentation cd" folder on a cd or USB stick) to run the ppt with sound and pictures saved in that folder (you don't need the Powerpoint program itself for this, since you are using the "pptview.exe" file in the same folder to "play" it). However, after downloading all the files in this "presentation cd" folder to the Playbook, I could only see one of them, the ppt file itself ---- and there is no icon in the Playbook to "play" the slideshow, it seems. Help?!
     Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

First, I use an app called "File Browser" to view those subfolders.
As for running a powerpoint, I can open a ppt file and it runs in Documents to go. Next to the "Close" button there are three icons. The third one runs the ppt file as a slideshow.
    1. Please thank those who help you by clicking the "Like" button at the bottom of the post that helped you.
    2. If your issue has been solved, please resolve it by marking the post "Solution?" which solved it for you!

I find a PDF name "Agile PLM Capacity Planning Guid" V 9.3.1 ,it says there are two software can synchronize file manager server , is XXCOPY and RoboCopy, but the two softwares only support Windows . Is there a software support synchronize file manager server on Linux ?

Hi I believe you have the wrong forum.
This forum is for the Agile PLM for Process product suite, not for the Agile A9 suite. For Agile A9 or Primavera questions, you can use Oracle Support, Support Communities, Yahoo Groups for Agile API or WRAU.
This forum is for Agile PLM for Process, which is part of the same Agile family but a different product.
    Thanks.

  • Is there any downside to using a reference type library if I use Time Capsule and will do file management only from within Aperture?

Have done a lot of reading to get prepared to convert to Aperture 3 and have this question regarding setting up my library type.
I'm not a professional -just a heavy user hobbyist.
It appears that the major factors in using reference style is to backup the images with Time Capsule and always do moves or deletes from within the Aperture application.
If my architecture matters here's what I have that may be involved in photo management and editing:
iMac (latest 27" high power version with lots of memory)
Internal 2TB HD where the library is stored
External (FireWire) 2TB HD where the images are stored
External (FireWire) 6TB HD backup drive
In the future an iPad for remote work on images (when/if available) and a Mac laptop (for same remote use)
I see major downside issues to letting the library manage my files - such as inaccessibility (or awkward accessibility) to the images for other programs, and performance issues when the library gets large (thousands of images or 100+ gb in size)
The chief complaints I've seen regarding using a reference mode is the broken link issues created if file management is done outside of Aperture (adds, deletes, moves of files) and the inability to use the Vault function for backup.
One feature that I imagine I'd like to have is maximum integration with Final Cut Pro X and that's one area I haven't seen much on and would be interested to hear about if that integration is affected with the choice of managed vs referenced library types. (I like to produce film clips that are combinations of pics and video and want to be set up so that is done in the easiest fashion when working in FCP X)
I'm sure I've not seen all sides of this issue and would like to see some discussion around this question.
    Thanks to everyone contributing!
    Craig

Goody, Goody, you hit a few of my favorite subjects! Herewith some comments, with the usual caveats - true to the best of my knowledge and experience, others may have different results, YMMV, and I could be wrong.
I run Aperture on two machines:
-- 2007 Mac Pro with 2x2.66 GHz Xeon, 21 GB of RAM, a 5770 GPU, and multiple HD. I have about 11,000 images, taking up 150 GB. (Many are 100 MB TIFF, scanned slides)
-- 2006 Mac Book Pro with 1 2.0 GHz Core Duo, 2 GB of RAM and a 240 GB SSD.
    Two very different machines.
-- Aperture Libraries are all the same - Managed or Referenced. If Managed, then the Master image files are inside the Package, if Referenced, they are outside, and you can have any combination you want. Managed is easier, but Referenced is not hard if you are the least bit careful.
-- While the sheer size of an Aperture Library is not a big issue, the location on disk of the different components can have a tremendous impact on performance.
-- Solid State Drives (SSD) read and write faster than regular Hard Disks (HD) and, what is more important, empty HD read and write much faster than full HD.
-- Aperture speed requires a combination of RAM, CPU, graphics processing unit (GPU) speed, and disk speed. The more RAM you have, the less paging you will see. With enough RAM, the next bottle neck is CPU (speed and cores) and GPU speed. But even then you will still have to fetch an image (longer if you pull the full resolution Master, read and rewrite the Version file, and update the Preview and Thumbs.
    So what works?
-- RAM, RAM, and more RAM. 4 GB will work, but you will page a bit. 8 GB is much faster. On my old MacPro the sweet spot was about 16 GB of RAM.
-- Keep your Library on your fastest (usually internal) drive. Keep that disk as unloaded as possible. How do you keep it unloaded? Either buy BIG, 1 TB+ or move your Masters off onto another disk. The good news here is that as Master files are written only once and never rewritten, speed of this disk, as opposed to the disk that holds the Library, is not important. There is a one second pause as the Master is read into memory and, if you have enough RAM, that is it - the Master will never be paged out. If, on the other hand, you do not have enough RAM, and you do a lot of adjusting at full resolution, then the speed of the disk that holds your Masters will become very important due to paging.
-- I found that I picked up a tiny bit of speed by keeping the Masters on a dedicated disk. Thus, in your configuration, if you can dedicate that 2 TB FW HD to your Masters, you should see very nice performance.
Final notes on backups and archives:
-- One conventional wisdom is that you should make an archive copy of every image file before or as you load them into your system. (Aperture in this case.) This archive is then never touched or deleted.
-- An alternative approach is that you do not keep such an archive, but only the images that you have in your Aperture Library. And when you delete from the Library, you no longer keep a copy anywhere.
    I do the following:
-- Card to Aperture. Card is then kept at least 24 hours until all of my backups have run. (I use three - Time Machine, Clone, and off site.)
-- I do not keep archive copies. If I decide to delete a file, my only recourse is to recover it from Time Machine during the six month cycle of my Time Machine backups. Thereafter, it is lost.
There are merits to both approaches.
Hope this is clear, correct, and responsive to your needs.

  • Default directory for FIle Manager

    Hi,
I am working on file manager for my final year project. I am using jsp, Tomcat and Linux as OS.

  • File Manager problem

I am trying to assist my mate uploading documents onto his site. He has been set up with Dreamweaver and is more hopeless than I am. It is a case of the blind leading the blind.
I am able to upload and overwrite files using his legacy file manager but cannot do so using his file manager.
After opening file management I then open on web root and then hit go. I am then supposed to be able to click on the upload button in order to be able to browse in order to select the file I want. I am then supposed to be able to upload it. But nothing at all happens when I first hit upload in order for me to be able to browse.
As I have said, this does not happen with legacy file manager, where it allows me to hit upload files and then allows me to browse and then upload without delay.
I contacted the bloke who installed the system and he is unsure as to why it happens. He said it could be something to do with my browser popup settings, but they are okay. I would be very grateful for advice.

I'm not sure which one he's using. I'm at my own computer at the moment and my mate's not around. I'll find out asap. Sorry my question was confusing. I am very much a layman.

  • File Manager Not Showing Duplicated Page(s)?

    Hi all,
I'm using ICE to create "landing pages" for my client's site. I have set up a 'site' for each landing page in the ICE 'file manager'. In addition, each landing page has its own directory on the server, in which the index.htm and associated image files are contained.
My first question is, if I duplicate one of these landing pages using the 'Duplicate Page" button, how do I get to it when I log back into the ICE file manager by clicking the 'Manage Sites' button? The duplicated page doesn't show up there.
In other words, I'll be making pages that share some of the same links as the 'regular site' does, but are 'hidden'. That is, they have a specific URL that you can only get to in a browser if you know the exact URL.
I don't see a 'listing' of all the pages I can edit if I click on a URL in the Manage Sites/file manager. If I click on a Website URL link, the 'home' page (index.htm) opens, without any apparent way to navigate to the duplicated page.
Am I making any sense? Anyway, thanks in advance for your help. ICE is an awesome service you are providing.
    Regards,
    Greg

    Hello Greg,
I'm very sorry for the delayed response. I don't know how your message was overlooked.
Your question make sense. Without a link from the index page to the new duplicated "hidden" page, your users will have to navigate directly to the page, then use Ctrl/Cmd+E  to enter the editing environment.
That is, they have a specific URL that you can only get to in a browser if you know the exact URL.
What you've described here, using the exact url, is how editors/publishers would have to access the page to edit it.
    Best regards,
    Corey

  • Xfce4 Can't Start File Manager or Settings w/Non-Super User

This is possibly a very stupid question, but I've been weeding through the forums and the wiki for a couple of hours now to no avail.  I've just installed Xfce and have it working in conjunction with GDM.  I can login just fine with my non-root account, but then I'm unable to adjust the Settings or load the File Manager as I am able to do when I login using root.
In the case of trying to load the Settings dialog box, I click on the icon in the panel, and it does absolutely nothing.  When I click on the File Manager icon, however, an hourglass appears as if it is trying to load, but then after about 30 seconds the hourglass disappears and nothing opens.
I have installed Firefox, and it works just fine under either account, and so I'm thinking it may be a simple permissions/groups problem...any thoughts?

The ownership of both the .cache and .config directories for some reason belonged to root and not my user.  I completely wiped out those directories, and restarted Xfce while logged into my account and it seems to be working now.  Thanks for the help xerverius.
On a side note, I also noticed that the .local directory is also owned by root and not myself.  There is nothing in it currently but a share directory, but does the ownership need to be changed for this as well?  It's completely unrelated to the Xfce problem, but I thought it was a little strange...

  • In-Browser Editing and File Management

Dealing with files in IBE is a mess, period. There is no way to tell any details about your media (dimensions would be a start). Again, I know it is a young part of Muse and I am excited for it, but I'm hoping I'm not the only one that views it as complicated at best. I'm not even sure about what I can clean up concerning duplicate images because there is no way to tell which one is being used.
I'm worried about 6 months down the road when my back end is bloated because my clientele can not delete nonsense pictures they loaded and I have no way, nor the time, to clean up the files that are littering my host space. They need to be able to navigate the file system without it overwhelming them. Overwhelmed clients are clients that leave you.
Two big things on my mind:
The erratic behavior of the text in IBE. It looks nothing like a paragraph so there is no way to judge what it will look like when you press update.
    File Management in IBE.
Very excited about Muse. I do hope these things are being addressed.

This is really strange.  I tried editing the drop down menus this morning, and it didn't work, so I posted this question.
I went back this afternoon to try the suggestion above, and I can edit the drop down pages by clicking on the drop down menus.
I'm not sure why it works now, but I'm glad that it does.
