Get ClassNotFoundException from a applet

hi all,
i'm trying to use the java.awt.geom.Arc2D class in a applet. it works fine on a appletviewer, but it throws the ClassNotFoundException:java.awt.geom.Arc2D on a applet in IE5.
i'm sure it got the lastest Java plug-in 1.3.1 on my computer.
here is the code of my simple applet:
import java.awt.*;
import java.applet.*;
import java.awt.geom.Arc2D;
public class Arc extends Applet {
     private Arc2D a2d;
     public void init() {
               a2d = new Arc2D.Double(Arc2D.PIE);
     public void paint(Graphics g) {
          g.drawString("Welcome to Java!!", 50, 60 );
}i can't even get the String drew on the applet as it's thrown the exception when i try to new the new Arc2D.Double object. can anyone pls tell me what else do i need to run this applet on IE5?
many thanks!
Darshaan.

I don't think that'll invoke the Java plug-in correctly.
Try something like the following to make sure your browser uses the plug-in instead:
<OBJECT classid="clsid:8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93" width="500" height="300" align="baseline" codebase="http://you.company.com">
<PARAM NAME="code" VALUE="Arc.class">
<PARAM NAME="codebase" VALUE="java/src">
<PARAM NAME="scriptable" VALUE="true">
No Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition v 1.3 support for APPLET!!
</OBJECT>
You can find more about how to write HTML for Java plug-in here:

Hope this helps!

  • Getting notifications from nm-applet

    Hey
    Is there any way to get notifications from nm-applet WITHOUT running a full DE and WITHOUT running a system-tray?

    wiki wrote:In order to run nm-applet without a systray, you can use trayer or stalonetray.
    You also need a notification daemon that listens for notifications and displays them. I use "dunst" for this, it is fairly lightweight.
    Don't forget to enable the notifications in nm-applet, which is done by right clicking on the nm-applet icon. That means you have to run a system-tray at least once to be able to activate the notifications.

  • Getting username from an applet

    I'm writing a program (an applet) that needs to get the username from a windows 2000 platform. Is that possible? I guess I need to set a security policy-file... Can someone leed me on the right way?

    It would be possible in an application to just do this:
    String userName = System.getProperty("user.name");But for security reasons it can't be done like this in an applet.
    Some info about signing applets from here:

    And if that doesn't help, you can search for some more resources at the forums and java.sun.com

  • How does javascript get string from applet?

    hi, sir/madam:
    I use an applet to deal with simulation, make the results to be a string and want to save it in a text file. Certainly, using applet to write local file is not good method (though I have some idea about it). I want that javaScript write something in browser and I save it with my mouse (manual) as a text file.
    thank for your help.
    xn
    could javaScript write/read local file?

    There is a nice JavaScript forum that you can visit if you have tough JavaScript questions:
    http://forums.webdeveloper.com/forumdisplay.php?s=a23bf83c088c66ac3adde0c3c5616bae&forumid=3
    I'm not implying that ppl here don't know JavaScript or anything like that.....
    In answering your questions, a Java applet can read from and write to local disk if proper permissions are granted either via a signed applet or setting the Java access right. Signing an applet can be a royal pain in the butt because you have to sign it one way for IE, another way for NN4, and yet another way if you use a plugin, etc....but here is a link in case you're interested:
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/qow/archive/167/index.jsp
    A JavaScript definitely cannot read from or write to a local disk unless you get help from something like MS ASP or VB scripts. The only reason you were able to read thru the appletviewer is because it's not a true browser and it's written by Sun to work with their own product.
    As far as using javascript to get information from an applet, you can try to make your applet scriptable via Netscape JSObject. I know for sure it works with IE and NN4+ but last time I tried, Sun and Netscape were still having trouble getting LiveConnect to work properly with NN6+.
    And there you have it.

    The above code is working in JDK1.4 and 1.5 but throwing classnotfoundexception.Did you mean ClasNotFoundException? If so, then please use the correct capitals, so there is no confusion. This is even more important on an international technical forum.
    I am not clear with the response "Change line 114, column 28 of the source from a '.' to a ','. All the problems should be gone." , kindly explain where I need to change this.That was commonly known as sarcasm. It meant I cannot fix code that I cannot see. That is why I requested you post the SSCCE (please read the link).
    It's an internal application not publicly available.OK - understood.

  • Getting hold of browsers document object, from an applet

    Well, at least that's how i think the problem will be solved.
    The purpose is to insert some text into a hidden field on a form in the html where the applet is embedded.
    so that this can be submitted along with the rest of the information that is entered through that page.
    i've been looking at the AppletContext but i don't think this will provide what's necessary.
    an alternate way of solving this would be to make an http-post with the information, since i prefer using our webserver to perform this.if this is the only way, is there a http-post object i can use for this, from an applet?

    One way is to move the entire form into your applet so that it can do a post and send all the data itself (or vice-versa; avoid using the applet).
    Another option might be to do it in two steps, have your form on one page then post all the details to the next page which contains the applet.
    The only other option I can think of is to use JSObject to call a javascript function. Look at this link http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/1.2/docs/jsobject.html

  • Activate a Midlet from an Applet

    Hi,

    Is this available in the opposite direction. I want that my Applet, when triggered by an event, be able to Activate\Wake Up the Midlet.
    I am a newbie to J2ME and after researching the web, still couldn't find an answer. Thanks for your help.
    Bye.

    You can communicate with servlet from an applet, using URL connection, and then send POST/GET methods through HTTP protocol, here is a code snippet,
    // applet side, this method will send a POST method to the servlet and then get url openstream to read a
    // returned object from the servlet, params should be in the form param1=value&param2=value etc...
    public Object getObjectFromServlet(String servletName,String params) {
        Object object = null;
        try {
          URL url = new URL(codeBase,
                            contextRoot + servletName + params);
          URLConnection con = url.openConnection();
          con.setUseCaches(false);
          InputStream in = con.getInputStream();
          ObjectInputStream result = new ObjectInputStream(in);
          object = result.readObject();
          result.close();
          in.close();
        catch (ClassNotFoundException ex) {
          System.err.println("ClassNotFoundException caught:" + ex.getMessage());
        catch (MalformedURLException ex) {
          System.err.println("MalformedURLException caught:" + ex.getMessage());
        catch (IOException ex) {
          System.out.println("IOException caught:" + ex.getMessage());
        return object;
    //servlet side
    public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response){
          //Extract all the necessary supplied parameters from the request object and configurations.
           String param1 = request.getParameter("param1");
           String param2 = request.getParameter("param2");
      try {
            ObjectOutputStream out = new ObjectOutputStream(response.getOutputStream());
            out.writeObject(object);
            out.close();
          catch (IOException ioe) {
            System.err.println("IOException caught:" + ioe.getMessage());

    Refer to the following link for a list of tutorials that will guide you through the steps you have queried about: http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/ejb30.html
    Also, if you are attempting to call a session bean from your applet code you may run into firewall issues depending on your corporate infrastructure. RMI does not run over the ever popular port 80 and therefore is not always open on company firewalls. If you run into trouble you may have to use HTTP Tunneling. A better alternative maybe to call your session bean as a web service which is provided to you by default in the EJB 3.0 spec.

  • Communicating with server from an Applet.

    Hi, i've written a tetris game in an applet.
    But i want some way of saving the high scores of everyone on the server.
    Is they anyway to communicate the final score back to the server from the applet?
    I tried saving the scores to a text file but apparently the file would appear on the client.

    Here is some code that you may find useful. This works for the more flexible serialized object approach. For a query string, you would simply do a post on the servlet with the appropriate URL that includes the query string. However, I have found the following serialized object approach to be more convenient.
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    This function sends an "AppletRequest" object to the servlet and gets the response back from the servlet in the form of a "ServletResponse" object.
    protected static ServletResponse talkToServlet(AppletRequest aReq) {
    ServletResponse sr = new ServletResponse();
    try {
    // Replace the following URL by the URL of your servlet
    servletURL = new URL("http://myservleturl/");
    servletConn = servletURL.openConnection();
    servletConn.setUseCaches (false);
    servletConn.setRequestProperty("Content-Type",
    "application/octet-stream");

  • A servlet  From an applet

    Dear friends,
    Hope you are doing well.
    I am facing a problem of how to call a servlet from an applet.
    Any help , please forward it.
    thanks
    vishal

    You can communicate with servlet from an applet, using URL connection, and then send POST/GET methods through HTTP protocol, here is a code snippet,
    // applet side, this method will send a POST method to the servlet and then get url openstream to read a
    // returned object from the servlet, params should be in the form param1=value&param2=value etc...
    public Object getObjectFromServlet(String servletName,String params) {
        Object object = null;
        try {
          URL url = new URL(codeBase,
                            contextRoot + servletName + params);
          URLConnection con = url.openConnection();
          con.setUseCaches(false);
          InputStream in = con.getInputStream();
          ObjectInputStream result = new ObjectInputStream(in);
          object = result.readObject();
          result.close();
          in.close();
        catch (ClassNotFoundException ex) {
          System.err.println("ClassNotFoundException caught:" + ex.getMessage());
        catch (MalformedURLException ex) {
          System.err.println("MalformedURLException caught:" + ex.getMessage());
        catch (IOException ex) {
          System.out.println("IOException caught:" + ex.getMessage());
        return object;
    //servlet side
    public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response){
          //Extract all the necessary supplied parameters from the request object and configurations.
           String param1 = request.getParameter("param1");
           String param2 = request.getParameter("param2");
      try {
            ObjectOutputStream out = new ObjectOutputStream(response.getOutputStream());
            out.writeObject(object);
            out.close();
          catch (IOException ioe) {
            System.err.println("IOException caught:" + ioe.getMessage());

  • Using JDBC from an Applet

    Hi,
    I'm trying to connet to an Oracle database from an Applet, using the oracle jdbc thin driver.
    When I'm running the applet with the applet viewer I can connet to the database. But, when I view the applet with Internet explorer 6 with the Microsoft JVM I get an exception:
    Error loading class: oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver
         at com/ms/vm/loader/URLClassLoader.loadClass(URLClassLoader.java)

         at com/ms/applet/AppletPanel.run (AppletPanel.java)
         at java/lang/Thread.run (Thread.java)
    I've tried to:
    1) Put the driver jar in the same place as the applet
    2) expand the jar in the applet's folder
    2) Add the jar to the archive attribute of the APPLET tag
    3) Add the applet and the content of the jar to a single arhcive
    but so far far nothing helped.
    Thanks,
    Dror B

    Hi,
    Did you try to use Sun's JVM? Microsoft VM is old, and probably does not contain the classes required by Oracle's driver; besides, it supports only old class format, which has evolved in Sun's JVM.
    Another solution is to use the RMI-JDBC driver by http://objectweb.org.
    Sincerely,
    Sergei Batiuk.

    Thank you for your answer.
    I'm very new to mySql as server. When I was assigned
    to write the application, the administrator has set
    up mySql database in the company web server for my
    application. My program runs very when using my
    workplace desktop with java web start or with java
    web start in netbeans (all paths should be link to my
    desktop hard disk, i.e. users/application/). I can
    not run the application at home because I can not
    access to the company intranet server (for security
    purpose). The problem happens when I post the
    application in the company web page (I have to modify
    all paths in jnlp file to the company web address).
    The program then runs without exception except it
    seems that it gets no data from the database (for
    example, when I type my username, it returns that
    "There is no such user name. contact.." as what I
    code in the application for not correcting user name)
    It happens for not only using my company desktop but
    also for others.
    Please help me.
    Thank you in advance.And all this could have been answered yesterday, in your other thread, when I asked you "Is the DB configured to allow that user to connect to the DB from where that user is attempting to connect from?"
    Seeing as how you get that error, the obvious answer was, "No." At which point we could have continued.
    Configure the needed users into the DB, without forgetting to allow them access from the machines from which they are going to access from.
    Although, I agree with Rene, that you should set up a server of some sort, located on the same machine as the DB, for communicating with the DB.
