Get mail activity "circle"

Just got a new Macbook and noticed a slight difference in using mail. I am used to seeing the "circle icon" going round and round when I click "get mail". Now I just hear the sound after searching for mail. Does anyone know if it is possible to see the circle while searching for mail. Using 3.5. Thanks!

Let me reiterate, because I just reread what I wrote and didn't understand it.
1) If there is a small gray triangle to the left of theo INBOX, click on it to expand it. On mine, it lists my time-warner server and RSS. Once the list is expanded and the servers are listed, you should see the spinning gray circle next to your server when you hit "get mail"
2) If you have no triangle to the left of INBOX, you can try this...
3) In my big mailbox window on the left, I have three headers... MAILBOXES, ON MY MAC, and RSS
4) There should be a small gray triangle to the left of RSS. Now, I NEVER use RSS and have have autodownloads omitted, nevertheless, when I click on the triangle to the left of RSS, it expands and shows "Apple Hot News" which was preprogrammed into the software.
5) Click ONCE on "Apple Hot News" to highlight it.
6) Make sure the mailboxes window is sufficiently wide. If it is, you should see an arrow pointing UP to the RIGHT of "Apple Hot News".
7) Click this Up arrow.
8) A small triangle to the left of INBOX should now appear. Click on it to expand the list and you should see your server there. Click on "Get Mail" to see the spinning thing.
If this doesn't work, I don't know what to tell you. I'm not a computer guy and I've been using Mac Mail for less than a week. I was just annoyed by the same thing you were... I almost didn't want to change from Semonkey to Mac Mail because of it and a few other minor issues (you can't default a text color to compose, etc.) It is amazing how we harp the smallest details!

• I opened my Pages document, choose Share but Mail is inactive. How do I get Mail active?

I opened my Pages document, choose Share, but Mail is inactive. It used to be active, don't know what happened. How do I activate mail so I can send
my Pages document via email?

Prior to the current version, the share menu contained only the means of sharing (Mail, Export). Choosing one of these opened a sub menu containing the available formats for the item to be shared (eg. Pages, Word, PDF).
For reasons unknown, Aple has revised the Share menu to show the means of sharing as a header (greyed) and the formats to use (Pages, Word, PDF) as menu items.
Choose the format lsted under the header.

• TS3276 I get Apple Mail through having activated POP in gmail. Since a week, when I click on "Get Mail", after a delay I see brielfly flashing "Incoming message 70 etc." but it dissapears and no mails gets downloaded. How to proceed?

I get Apple Mail through having activated POP in gmail. Since a week, when I click on "Get Mail", after a delay I see brielfly flashing "Incoming message 70 or whathever the number in waiting is." and the green band extends to the end of the line in a fraction of a seconde, but then dissapears and no mails gets downloaded. It is not a matter of password etc.. that are all OK. Strangely, yesterdays, some email did come through after a few days of failure, but not anymore. Could it be related to hacking or something like that? Any thing I could try?
I have OX 10.6.8.

Hello there dinadinadina,
It sounds like you have modified the password settings for your Gmail account after changing the password. Thats where I would have started too. Next I would restart the device and test it one more time, and then remove and add the account again in Settings:
Get help with Mail on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Restart your iOS device.
Delete the affected email account from your device.
Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Tap the affected email account.
Tap Delete Account.
Add your account again.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care,

• Didn't get the activation mail

I signed for a itunes connect free books account. I get the "successfully created" message, but i didn't get the activation mail. The given mail address is correct.
What can I do?

I signed up for an iTunes connect paid book account back in November, and I'm STILL waiting for the activation email. It's not in my spam folder, either. And because I signed up once, it won't let me try signing up again. Feeling quite lost....

• Get Mail - missing little spinning grey circle

hi,
a friend's computer's little spinning grey cirle in MAIL is all of a sudden missing. I told him he could just use the window that shows what the program is doing (forgot name)... but, he wants his little spinning grey wheel back.
I don't know what happened to it. You know the one - when you hit Get Mail... it spins to show it is working. I'm not talking about the spinning color beach ball one.
Anyone know where this little grey spinning cirle would be?
thanks in advance!

So what specific model is this iMac? Is it a G5? Or is it an Intel iMac?
If it is a G5 you have posted in the wrong forum, this is the Intel forum. A G5 is not an Intel Mac, it has the IBM PowerPC CPU.
If this is an Intel, which Intel model is it? Did it come with Mac OS X Tiger installed on it? If it did not come with Tiger, if it came with Leopard, you cannot put Tiger on it.

• My "get mail" circle icon is stuck at about 11:00 ??? Help....

Actually I have two questions.
1) why is my get mail icon stuck? I just sent myself an email from my wife's computer and recieved it fine, but the icon will not go away. It seems to be stuck.
2) just tonight all my inbox email headers have changed. - there is now tons of blank space before the actual email ... I have to scroll way down to see my message?
Any help would be great. Thank you!

For both posters:
I have investigated and reported some issues with both .mac and IMAP accounts, including what you report. I don't really see the impact on my G5, but only on my iBook when I test with it. Read the topic linked below, and share your thoughts:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=253262&tstart=0
The way Tiger is caching messages can also show up in difficulty in viewing some messages with attachments. Also see:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1570926&#1570926
Let me know if you change the preference to not keep copies of messages and attachments for Offline viewing, and whether it helps?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

• What is the point of the Mail Activity box?

At the bottom left of the Apple Mail app. window, there is a Mail Activity box. This used to be very useful back in the days of, I think, Tiger, or maybe Leopard, but since upgrading to Lion, nothing has ever appeared in that box. If I want to see Activity I have to open a new window.
Why does this box still exist? Is there any way to get Activity to appear in that box as it used to, and, I suppose, as it is supposed to?

I think it serves two purposes... first it blocks visability from your archive mail box and two some networks dont use the internet so if you are getting mail and you have to go through a bunch of nonsense it shows up. LIke if you work for a company or goverment agency, their networks may not be connected to the out side world like using dialup, dsl, or high speed internet like you and me do.

• Why is Get Mail button not working in Mavericks?

I often click on it if I'm expecting an email and it hasn't arrived yet. I've just installed Mavericks on my 1/1/2 year-old iMac, and I can't get the Get Mail envelope icon to do anything, except blink at me.

The progress wheels (gears) have been dropped in 10.9, so when you click the envelope icon, there is no longer a visible cue that anything is happening.
If you haven't done this already, you can choose to show the Mail Activity viewer by clicking on the button in the bottom left hand corner of the Mail window. If you have no mail, it doesn't show anything when you click the envelope icon, but it will give an indication when there is something going on in Mail.

• Can get mail but can not receive mail.

Had a problem with receiving mail on an account so we deleted the account and re-added it. And it worked. Same thing is now happening to another user ad we tried the same thing but the user is still not getting mail.
Running 10.4.10. any help would be great. Not entirely new to server, but to troubleshooting the mail side I am beginner.
Also having a weird problem where old accounts, after they have been deleted still show up under server admin- mail - maintenance - accounts. Not a big problem just weird.

OK... to recap: You have a user, you send email to user, user checks email, user does not get email?
On the server, can you check the mail queue (in Server Admin or on the command line with mailq) to see if mail for that user's id is stuck in the queue? Mail can be stuck in the active queue without throwing any error messages your way. In my experience, and the experience of a few others on the board, this can be due to problems connecting to the user's home directory server.

• How does it usually take to get the activation email after receiving the invoice receipt?

Hi all. I'm doing the develop enrollment. I received the invoice receipt 3 days ago, which says apple has received my 99 dollars. But I'm still waiting for the activation email. It should take no more than 24 hours to get the activation email, right? if I click "Program enrollment" in this page(https://developer.apple.com/contact/), safari will tell me there are too many redirects and can't open the link. What should I do, please?

I got my activation e-mail rather quickly; however, something is wrong with my Developer enrollment (I registered as an individual and it says they are trying to verify my identity to see if I can act on my company's behalf--which does not make sense because I registered as an individual).
Apple has my $99 too and I also am unable to contact them due to the same redirect problem you are facing.
I am wondering if there is a recent bug on their site that needs to be addressed (seems like it is getting caught in a loop while trying to verify the device and/or browser). I have posted a question as well so let's hope this gets resolved soon.
Not a smooth way to start :-/

Roadrunner "Get Mail" button doesn't work in Mail client 10.4.6 on iMac Intel dual core running 10.6.8 . Activity bar shows 100's of emails downloading, but none appear in inbox. sent and draft mails box updates normally. outgoing emails send normally. web version and iPhone Mail inbox work normally and showall incoming messages. Preferences reset per TWC - updated user names, servers, password etc. Incoming and outgoing servers on desktop changed to "mail.twc.com" Ports correct. Restarted computer, no help. Connection doctor shows computer accesses internet and mail server. memory capacity 65% of allowable by TWC. Any suggestions appreciated.

• Email error - "cannot get mail"

Hi,
Just hoping for a little help!
We recently had an email account disconnected by our provider in error (we changed from a mobile Internet connection to home ADSL & requested an email retention, which didn't happen!)
After weeks of dealing with our incompetent provider we have finally got the email address reconnected however I am unable to get it to work on any of our devices (iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad 3, or home laptop). The account is definately active as emails are accessible through the providers website. The email address is an "additional mailbox" to the primary mailbox connected with the adsl.
The email address worked fine on our devices & laptop prior to the disconnection.
With the reconnection our provider advised we had to change the email settings to now be a pop3 account and provided the relevant details regarding servers, ports etc.. These details are exactly the same as the primary email address I have set up on all devices and which works perfectly.
I have tried deleting the account and re-adding, I have rebooted the devices and have double triple checked the settings. Still nothing! I just receive an error message saying "cannot get mail. The username or password for "pop3.xxxx.com" is incorrect." Though, I know the password is correct as its the same one we use to log in to the mailbox on our providers website and access the email.
Would anyone have any insight as to why only this particular email address can not be added to the devices "mail app"?? I love the ease of being able to just tap the mail icon and see all my different email accounts. I'd prefer to not have to manually login to our providers website to access mail on one account.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
B

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.
