GetString() interfering with updateRow()...

Question

This simple snippet works perfectly UNLESS I unremark the line creating the text1 string variable. The "list" table is an MS Access 2k table with 10 records. I have tried everything (well I'm sure you guys can tell me what I didn't try :-) but if I use the getString() method then the updateRow method generates a MS ACCESS "row error" whatever the heck that is.
rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT loan, UPB from list");
while (rs.next())
int i = rs.getInt(2);
i = ++i;
//String text1 = rs.getString("loan");
rs.updateInt(2, i);
rs.updateRow();
}

Also, I tried the following:
immediately after the getString() line, I used the methods
rs.next() and rs.previous
to leave and re-enter the same row on the outside chance that getString was somehow "locking" the record after it executed.
That didn't work either.
I only have a few gobs of hair left to pull out! :-)
