Getting a good frame rate going

It seems like even with the simplest flash app, I'm not
getting a great frame rate. I wrote the attached code just to
display the frame rate.
If I set the movie frame rate to 60, then I'm seeing
displayed frame rates of around 37. If I set it to 30, I'm seeing
around 24. My computer is fast enough to run high-end games at
solid frame rates, so I don't think that is the issue.
Is there anything that I'm missing, or is this just something
I need to live with?
Thanks.

sorry jigidyjim i don't really have a solution for you but i
thought some diagnostic information may help.
i tried your code on my dual-core 2.1GHz machine.
At 60FPS, i was seeing about 55-56, and at 25FPS, i was
seeing pretty close to 25 most of the time. So it pretty much ran
as expected.
good luck with it!

  • Frame rate goes crazy with editable text sprite

This one is annoying - I have a lot of things that depend on
    a steady,
predictable frame rate. But whenever you have the mouse
    button held down on
an editable text sprite, the frame rate goes through the
    roof. I don't know
what the numbers are exactly, but everything runs MUCH faster
    than it
should. This can result in some major timing mis-syncs for
    other events
happening on the stage. It looks like the OS is taking over
    or something
when you're selecting text on a text sprite. Is there any
    easy way around
this? Or should I just try and keep editable text sprites
    from being used
on the same frame as time-sensitive code? I'm thinking I
    could maybe get
around it by making the sprite non-editable and changing the
    text manually
based on keypresses, but that sounds like a lot of work to
    basically
reinvent the wheel here for something that should just work,
    you know?

    "exitframe" in over half a

    behavior.
Well, what I do is something like:
    global timeBase
    on exitFrame
if the ticks - timeBase > 2 then
repeat while the ticks - timeBase > 2
    timeBase = timeBase + 2
    gameLoop()
    end repeat
    end if
    end
So, even if the movie is lagging behind, the gameLoop()
    executes at regular
intervals. If more than 2 ticks have passed between this
    frame and the
previous, it will execute the gameLoop() script multiple
    times in order to
catch up. All the important time-dependant stuff runs in
    gameLoop().
This is not what the problem is, however. Most of my
    animations on screen
are being shown as Film Loop sprites or in some cases
    animated GIFs, and
these are what depend on the steady frameRate. If you click
    on an editable
text object, the animations all suddenly speed up until you
    release the
mouse button. I guess it's really more of an aesthetic thing
    than anything
else, but it just looks really silly when everything suddenly
    runs
super-fast just because you clicked on a text sprite.

  • How to get 1/4 frame rate slomo with sound

I have a clip shot at 60 fps. I had to separate the audio to get it synced perfectly. I can RAM preview the slow motion at 15 fps, but when I render a movie it plays at normal speed. What is the technique to get AE to output the movie and audio at a reduced frame rate?

As Andrew alludes, your post is a bit confusing because you don't mention the delivery frame rate.  Yes, 15fps is one-fourth of 60 fps, but it doesn't tell us anything about the frame rate you need to DELIVER.  Without that bit of information, we're stuck.
Secondly, we're unsure if you want the slowed-down audio to drop in pitch, which it will do when it's slowed down.  There are was to fix the pitch (a bit) in audio applications like Adobe's Soundbooth, but you don't want to use AE to do it.

  • Frame rate goes from 24fps to 29fps after capture

I have all my footage on 24fps, DVX100A Panasonic Camera, and work on final cut pro 4.5. After my footage is capture some of the clips are on 29fps and others on 24fps... I don't know why is this happening... When I open the clips on Quicktime, even the ones that FCP has listed as the 29fps ones, the info quicktime displays says they are 23.98fps. I exported those files directly from the capture scratch folder and they go 29fps and if i drag them to the timeline they need to be renderize. I closed the program, re-opened it hoping for some magic but nothing... any ideas?? I'm on a deadline...

did you shoot 24p or 24pA. if you shot 24p you need to capture using the cinema tools preset for reverse telecine. if you shot 24pA, use the setting for advanced pulldown removal.
as well, make very sure that you edit in a 23.98 timeline, not a 24 timeline. You will absolutely lose sync if you edit 24p material in a 24 timeline.
Keep in mind that whether you shoot 24p or 24pA, you are still capturing images into the camera at 29.97fps. The 2:3:3:2 pulldown and the 3:2 (2:3:2:3) pulldown methods are a way of duplicating fields to make up for the 6 frame difference.
    i.e. do the count.
Frame 1 has two fields. Frame 2 has 3 fields, one field will be discarded upon pulldown removal. if you are shooting 24pA then frame 3 will also have 3 fields and then frame 4 will have 2 fields. If shooting 24p, then frame 3 will have 2 fields and frame 4 will have 3 fields. If you do the math you'll see that, for your intended 24 frames you have 12 extra fields. That is 6 frames (2 fields per frame...) The pulldown removal removes these frames upon capture. Leaving you with 23.98 frames to edit with. Make sure you use a 23.98 timeline. The setting you changed in your preferences was for playback, since FCP assumes you are playing back to an NTSC CRT monitor (capable of playing 29.97 fps ONLY) FCP will add a pulldown for the output. THis does not affect your project. It is done on the fly by FCP.
    Hope this helps.

  • Leasing with Mazda- what score do I need to get good lease rates?

So long story I'll try to summarize. I've been slowly rebuilding my credit for years. A few years ago, through a little bad luck and a lot of stupidity my credit scores tanked, low 500s. But somehow, when my car broke down, I managed to get approved for a very expensive lease of $299 a month for a little Hyundai Accent. Now...I have no regrets because it has allowed me to begun rebuilding credit slowly. Since then, I leased another car for my wife, and we have refinanced our mortgage.  Bill payment history has been strong for the last 3-4 years. Havent missed a single lease payment o these two cars. Multiple credit cards, all current, and total utilization is less than 30%. All told, I've managed to claw my score into the mid to high 600's depending on the bureau. (677 TU, 672 EQ, 648 EX)...I know that my EX auto score is 660.Not sure of the other auto scores. I am likely not leasing for a few months. Later this summer, an old judgement from 2008 will be falling off my credit reports. How much of a difference can I expect it to make? Will this get me to a level where I can get a good lease rate from mazda for a 2016 CX-5?  Thanks

Why not buy? Just curious. If I didnt have my reliable car that was problem free and paid for, I would lease. If you like to drive a new car every 2-4 years, want peace of mind for warranty, don't drive over 20k miles/yr, etc, then leasing is the way to go.  Even with leasing people have taken a leased vehicle and traded it in at the dealer (yes, its possible, as the actual value was significantly higher than the residual value due to low mileage/condition) took that profit towards their next lease, and avoided a down payment.  That is of course one scenario and doesn't fit everyone. I would NOT be going to a car dealer to lease though unless there were some bangin' incentives (like the hybrids had in california for residents). I would instead go to swap a lease dot com and find some rich person that has 5 or 6 cars and has already made that big down payment capital cost reduction, and is offering to PAY ME to take their car.  Sometimes the mileage allowance is over 2k miles a month! $500 to have a car shipped isnt too bad either. I'd want a mechanic to inspect of course before. Now, you can get a newISH car every SIX months to 2 years for even less.  And still have the option to buy or trade or return at the end. That is flexibility!

  • Background frame rate

Is there any way to change the default frame rate when the app goes in background? The default rate drops to smth like 4fps or even less when the app is in background and I need to change that to a higher number because the app takes forever to switch tracks (this is an audio streaming app). If the app has the focus, the track switching is immediate but when the frame rate drops it takes up to one minute. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Just for fyi, I understand the reasons why the frame rate is lowered. There are good articles out there that explain the reasons and best coding practices to ensure that the app does not waste device battery. In my case, I just need to be able to throttle the frame rate up when switching tracks and then back down. I can 't seem to find a way to do it. Maybe it's not possible...that is why I am reaching out to folks in this forum.

    Chris,
Sorry for the late reply. I took some time to test a little more...
Tip#2 does not seem to make any difference. The stage always reports the same frame rate of 24.
    private function onThrottleEvent(e:ThrottleEvent):void
    trace("targetFrameRate is " + e.targetFrameRate);
    trace("throtle state is " + e.state);
    if (stage != null)
    trace("stage Frame rate is" + stage.frameRate);
    results:
    targetFrameRate is 4
    throtle state is throttle
    stage Frame rate is 24
To further test, I set logging to true to get a better understanding of what the OSMF  was doing since I use the framework in the Android version.
-locale en_US -define CONFIG::FLASH_14_0 true  -define CONFIG::MOCK false -define CONFIG::PLATFORM true -define CONFIG::LOGGING true -swf-version=27
I can email the logs to you privately if you want them. On Android devices, logging shows that when the app is pushed in the background, the OSMF does not move beyond the wait state. Smth inside of the OSMF  behaves differently when the app is in the background mode. Let me summarize the behavior quickly one more time.
    1. App is in foreground: App switches to the next track immediately.
    2. App is in foreground and screen is locked: App switches to the next track. There is a few seconds delay, but it still moves to the next track.
    3. App in the background with screen locked or unlocked: App does not switch to the next track. OSMF gets stuck in wait state of Seg 1 Fragment 3.
Here are the last two lines before the app gets stuck.
    Mon Apr 13 2015 05:38:49 PM.607 [DEBUG] [org.osmf.net.httpstreaming.HTTPNetStream] Processed 66901 bytes ( buffer = 11.981, bufferTime = 4, wasBufferEmptied = false )
    Mon Apr 13 2015 05:38:49 PM.608 [DEBUG] [org.osmf.net.httpstreaming.HTTPNetStream] State = wait
The app will stay in this state until I bring the app to the foreground.
Here are the logs when app comes to the foreground.
    targetFrameRate is 24
    throtle state is resume
    stage Frame rate is 24
    targetFrameRate is 4

    Mon Apr 13 2015 05:40:15 PM.107 [DEBUG] [org.osmf.net.httpstreaming.HTTPNetStream] State = play
On iOS devices, the app behaves the same as far as the frame rate goes but the streaming stops immediately when the app is pushed to the background or the screen  is locked. I don't use the OSMF in iOS app but I use the Netstream class in combination with StageVideo to be able to consume HLS streams. Here are some traces.
    (pushed to the background)
    app status is ....deactivate
    stage video is available
    NetStream.Play.Stop
    targetFrameRate is 4
    (brought to the foreground)
    throttle state is throttle
    stage Frame rate is 24
    targetFrameRate is 24
    throttle state is resume
    stage Frame rate is 24
When the app dispatches the Deactivate event, it also forces the Netstream  to stop streaming. The documentation that I have read says that when the app enters background, video stops rendering but in this case I am streaming audio only so I don't see the reason why NetStream.Play.Stop is dispatched on deactivate. In app.xml, I have also the correct setting to be able to play background audio.
    <key>UIBackgroundModes</key>
      <array>
      <string>audio</string>
      </array>
Any thoughts? The app is available in both Android and Apple stores so you can easily download and test the  behavior yourself.

  • Premiere Pro EDL not loading correct frame rate in SpeedGrade

Having trouble getting an EDL generated from PPro to open properly in SpeedGrade. The EDL export comes into SpeedGrade as a 24fps sequence even though the PPro sequence is 25fps. Then when I try to link the media in Sg the I get a mismatched frame rate error. Most annoying and I can't figure out where it's going wrong. Don't want too use Dynamic link because I can't have grading layers in Sg using that workflow (as far as I can see, though I'd be happy to be proved wrong). Any ideas anyone? Cheers. Pete.

I have just created a new project in Speedgrade, then edited the options to the matching frame rate
then I close out Speedgrade, use the Premiere Pro dynamic link and then the new Speedgrade frame rate has remained and now matches
I have heard if you add an adjustment layer in Premiere Pro, then link to Speedgrade, you can utilize that for possibly what you require
I just create my looks in Speedgrade and apply through Lumetri in Premiere

  • Frame rate shifts on imported P2 media

We are getting a strange frame rate shift on some P2 media we are importing into FCP.
The media looks fine and plays fine in P2 viewer on these few shots, but when it's imported the video speeds up and the clip shows that it's 8 fps or 12.99 or some other variation. I also noted that the data rate shows up as different in these imported clips from the clips that play correctly.
This problem is also occurring on several long interview clips where right in the middle of the shot, the video speeds way up, but the audio continues at normal rates. Then in one instance about 9 minutes later, it just goes back to the proper rate. As I said, these segments look fine in the P2 viewer. This only happens on some shots after they're imported.
Has anyone had any experience with anything like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,

What frame size & frame rate is your footage?
If it's not a frame rate with Advance Pulldown, uncheck the "removed Advanced Pulldown..." checkbox in the Log & Transfer Import Preferences (access them by clicking on the gear at the top of the Log & Transfer window).

  • ISight + Slow Frame Rate

    Hello,
I have been using my isight daily for several months now, and have not had any problems. Two days ago I started experiancing very low framerates, but for my side of the video. I can see the other person clearly and at a good frame rate, but the other person gets a slide show. When I'm not connected I see everything clearly, but when in the video chat, the little window with me in it is also very slow. What can be done to stop this.
I chat with my girlfriend who has a powerbook with tiger so our set ups are almost identical.
Can you please tell me who is mostlikely causing this and what can be done to fix it.
    Thank you,
    Stanislav Jidkov

Hello rhondageske. Until you get a response from Stanislav Jidkov, here are a couple of other ideas you can consider.
If you have already tried all the relevant suggestions in How to get iChat AV working again without success, both you and your chat buddy whith whom you experience this problem should test with several others to be more certain which system has the problem. Only the system that has trouble connecting with several others will need to do the requisite troubleshooting work.
If you do not have enough available buddies for testing, see this list of Buddy Names for iChat Test for contact info for some users willing to help you test.
If your buddy uses a PC, and if testing shows the problem is with the PC end of the connection, your PC friend may need to tune his system, adjust his video quality and frame rate, or consider the other suggestions for the PC side of the connection in Mac Video Chat with PCs.

  • Poor performance / low frame rate

    Hi
Well I have a scenegraph with some objects imported
from vrml files and a lot of boxes (1200 Box objects)
So when I move the view (camera) to see my model
when i pass near the boxes i have a very low frame rate
    3 ,4 ,5 max.
When I don't include the boxes into my scenegraph
i get a better frame rate 15 16 17 max. This scene contains about 30 objects loaded from vrmk file.
apx. 1000 boxes are so hard to render?
they are grouped together like in a container terminal.
    what can cause this?
    is this scenegraph to large?
The computer is very good 2Gb DDRAM, a very good graphic card (128 Mb).
Please answer to me or give a hint
    Regards
    Cristian
PS. I have also noticed that when I tried the well known java3d HelloUniverse program with 1000 colored cubes it was very slow when i resized the window?
Do i do something wrong or java3d is slow ?
    Thx again

Well, 1200 boxes equals 14,400 faces/polygons (2 per side of the cube) to be rendered. Plus, with the addition of the objects imported it'll be higher.
The graphics adapter may not be powerful enough to render this amount at an acceptable frame rate. Having 128MB of RAM doesn't mean it's fast.

  • Image Sequence Settings in QT Pro - what is the Frame Rate range available?

I am considering purchasing QT Pro for Windows. I wish to make a time lapse movie out of a series of pictures. I would like to know what the range of options is for the "Image Sequence Settings" in File->Open image Sequence... menu. Does is it go well beyond 1 second?
    Thanks!
    Chris

Frames rates are from 10 seconds per frame up to 60 frames per second.
I make many image sequence movies and just start with one frame per second.
I then "add scaled" to a properly timed audio only file. This way you can get nearly any frame rate you could ever need.

  • What frame rate timeline should I use for 1080p 60fps premiere pro

When using 1080p 60fps clips what sequence should I use when creating a timeline that would work the best for slow mo application?
I read that you should use a 24 fps timeline but i'm not sure?
Also I have a few 720 @ 120 fps, should I create a separate sequence for that and what kind of timeline should I use since cs5 only has 1080 @ 60fps option?

24 is a good frame rate for most animations but some people like 30 and for the max stress on user systems and animation smoothness, use 60.

  • Frame rate drops on 1410 and 1405 cards.

    Hi-
    I am using a 1410 and a 1405 card.
I am experiencing a problem of dropped frame rates while using imaqGrab function.  I am putting this in a timer control ( just like hlGrab example provided with nivison) and get really high frame rates and then a drop to really low frame rates.  The drop seems to be at consistant intervals.  I have tried using each card independantly to isolate problem.  Happens with each card independatly.  I have tried using a buffer and not using a buffer.  Timer control on UIR is set to 0.000 for timer interval so should be happening as fast as possible.  Anyone have any ideas?
    Blue

    Hi  Blue,
How do you see the frame rate drop and how do you
    measure
it? What is the expected frame rate in your application?
    Thanks and have a
    great day.

  • Vista MBP and Frame rates

    Hey Guys,
I've got a MBP Santa Rosa, and I've loaded Vista (both 32bit and x64) at varying stages onto bootcamp, and I seem to get very low frame rates. In TF2 I'm only topping out around 50 to 60 (vsync isn't on)
I've tried the official bootcamp drivers and also some from Laptopvideo2go. I'm at a bit of a loss here.
Can anyone recommend a decent driver set or at least provide some numbers on what they're getting in TF2 or the Source engine stress test?
Screen settings are at 1280x1024 with all settings at default recommendation.
Tried 3dmark06 but it runs at about 15FPS in the first test and I bail out cause I can't bare to watch it like that.

When you do replace drivers, clean out the existing drivers with Driver Sweeper and follow directions.

Can't help on what works best though.
