Getting array.length

Hi... how does one get the length of the individual arrays in a 2D matrix?
i.e. if I have int[][] grid = new int [5][7] how do I get the 5 and the 7 without obviously storing them in variables of their own (i.e. how do I use the .length field?)? Cheers

Get Type ArrayElement fails if array length is 0

Get<Type>ArrayElement fails if the array length is 0 in 1.4. It seems to work fine in 1.5. I was "googling" and I found this link -- http://e-docs.bea.com/wljrockit/v315/relnotes/relnotes.htm. It mentions that this problem -- The JNI methods GetStringChars and Get<>ArrayElements threw OutOfMemoryError if called with a String or array of zero length -- was fixed in version 3.1.4. What is version 3.1.4 and how does this relate to JDK verions that I get out of java -version.
I will appreciate any pointers.

I would suggest your problem lies in choosing to do something which will cause complications.

Arrays in vbs are a little tricky.
Thats mainly because
dim arr()
does not create an empty array but an unitialized one. So calling Ubound(arr) will raise an error.
It will also fail to loop using "for each".
So I would suggest to never use "()" to define an array but
dim arr : arr = Array()
MsgBox "length=" & ubound(arr) + 1
dim arrElem
for each arrElem in arr
' here we can do something
Next
Array() will create an initialized Array of length 0. UBound will give -1 as return value.
Usng this returing an array from a funtion works quiet well without having to check for exceptions if array is empty.
Option Explicit
Function GetElems()
GetElems = Array()
' do some stuff
end function
dim elems : elems = GetElems
dim elem
for each elem in elems
' here we can do something

If you want to dynamically grow an array you can use redim preserve.
Option Explicit
dim arr : arr = Array()
redim preserve arr(Ubound(arr) + 1)

Quick array length question...

for this part of my code i'm trying to determine the components needed to find the average of my array. I can't seem to find a way to determine the length of my array (how many components it consists of). Every time I keep getting the dereferencing error....I know it's something simple but I just can't seem to get it right. Please help!

This length attribute if any array object will give you the number of components I mean number of elements in that array.
array.length; rather than array.length();
This may be helpfull.

I'm trying to handle a String from my DataBase and get its length:
String myName;
int i;
PreparedStatement sql = Conn.prepareStatement("SELECT NAME FROM MY_TABLE");

results.next();
myName = results.getString("NAME");
i = myName.length();
out.println("The value is " + myName + " and the length is " + String.valueOf(i) );
I get:
" The value is Tom and the lengh is 20 "
20 is the length of the field (it's a CHAR (20) ), but I would like to get the length
of 'Tom'.
On other hand, I would like to detect if this value is 'Tom' or not, but trying with:
if (myName.equals("Tom")) {...}
or
if (myName == "Tom") {...}
There is no response.
Any experience?

Getting the length of a field in a database.

I have a field in a database that has a char length of 20, is there anyway to get that length from the database.

I probally didn't explain myself properley. The field might not have anything in it. The field would only except a length of 20, some have 10 others 5.
I have a GUI repersenting a table in the database. When the user is inputting into this field I want to stop them from entering more than 20 Characters. I need to know how many characters the field will accept.
I'm trying to stop my client from calling me up and saying that there something rong with the program because when he enters data, it only saves half of it.

Thanks for replying, In my first question actually I am validating the report values in javascript for that I need the length of the apex_item to run the loop that many times.
Like we can get the length using apex_application.g_f011.count in pl/sql process how to get the length in the javascript, is there a way for that?

How to get the length of a audio file without play it ?

Now I know a method to get the length of a audio file by play it:
1 Create a Player, and add a ControllerListener
2.Start the Player
3.In the ControllerListener's controllerUpdate method, use getMediaTime() by receiving a EndOfMediaEvent
However I think this method is not convenience, if I don't want to play it how I can get the length of the audio file?

I tried getDuration() before, but it always return a same time, I think maybe I didn't realize the player.

How can I get the length of a sequence using script

I am trying to get the length of an image sequence that was imported using importOptions.sequence. I need to check that the length is a correct number, and if it is too short/long it gives an error message.
Is there a way to do this?

What sort of TreeNodes do you have in your Tree? If you have DefaultMutableTreeNodes in there then you could call the getDepth method on the root node. That operation is expensive though.

menas '#' and ' ' space are 2 pair of characters.. and # is replaced by ' ' (space).

STRING LIKE T,
RULE(20) VALUE 'AxbXCydYEzfZ'.
STRING = T.
TRANSLATE STRING USING RULE.
WRITE / STRING.
Output:
xXyYzZGhIj

Hi,
you cannot know in advance, how many bytes will be read. But the read-method returns the number of bytes actually read and this is important!
So at least you have to write:        int r = input.read(b);
        String javaReport=new String(b, 0, r); However, you still do not know, whether there is even more output available. You could however retrieve the data in a loop and append it e.g. to a StringBuffer, until EOF is encountered.
