Getting class/object that "owns" a given object

Hi,
Say I have the following:class ClassA {
    // fields
class ClassB {
    ClassA objA;
    // other fields
ClassA separateObjA = new ClassA();
ClassB objB = new ClassB();Is it possible to determine (somewhere inside the ClassA declaration code) whether an object of this class is a field of a ClassB object (like in the case of objB.objA), or a separate one (like separateObjA)?
Thanks for any help.
Best regards,
vt

Hi -vt-,
Yes, it is possible : ClassA must simply have a reference of ClassB as a variable instance. With such design, you have to think situations where many instances of ClassB are sharing only one instance of ClassA.Yes that's what I meant :-)
My personal experience with creating bi-directional relationships between classes is that they are messy and complicated. Whenever possible, I try to work around this by one of the two following solutions:
1. Making a listener interface for owned class so the owner can receive messages about changes. The observer / observable pattern can be useful in many of these situations
2. Make the "owned" class an inner class. That way (1) it will automatically have a reference to the owner, and (2) it strengthens type safety.

  • Create array of arbitrary dimensions / get Class object for primitive types

    Here's an interesting problem: is there any way to code for the creation of an n-dimensional array where n is only known at runtime (input by user, etc.)?
    java.lang.reflect.Array has a newInstance method which returns an array of an arbitrary number of dimensions specified by the int[] argument, which would give me what I want. However, the other argument is a Class object representing the component type of the array. If you want to use this method to get an array of a primitive type, is it possible to get a Class object representing a primitive type?

    That doesn't help, since the whole problem is that the number of dimensions aren't known until runtime. You can't simply declare a variable of type int[][] or use an int[][] cast, since the number of []'s is variable.
    The int.class construction was partly what I was looking for. This returns the array needed (assuming some read method):
    int dimensions = read();
    int size = read();
    int[] index = new int[dimensions];
    for (int i = 0; i < dimensions; i++)
        index[i] = size;
    Object myArray = Array.newInstance(int.class, index);The only problem is, as an Object, I can't use myArray usefully as an array. And I can't use a cast, since that requires a fixed number of dimensions.

  • Get class object for primitive datatype name stored in a string

    Hi,
    I have an array of Strings:
    String[] somePrimitives = {"int", "char", "void" };
    I want to achieve the equivalent of :
    for(int k = 0; k < somePrimitives.length; k++) {
    Class myClass = Class.forName(somePrimitives[k]); //Wont work
    We all know, we cannot do Class.forName("int") etc since "int" is not a path to
    an actual class - whereas Class.forName("java.lang.Integer") will work.
    Can anyone tell me how to achieve the above ?
    Of course, I don't want to have numerous hardcoded checking conditions like
    if(somePrimitives[k].equals("int")) return (Integer.TYPE);
    thanks.

    1. Why couldn't java provide me a simple provision to list all available primitives and their corresponding
    class mapping ? Why should I do the mapping...shouldn't the language have taken care of
    its provisions ?Yes, and native compilation on the fly, dynamic modification of classes, a sensible types system, usable Number tree, quasiquotation, access to the AST of the source, getting a method based on argument types rather than parameter types, etc. etc.
    2. Or even better they could have made the method
    Class.getPrimitiveClass(String primitiveDatatTypeName)
    as a public method. This would have solved the whole
    problem with a one line piece of code. Why did they
    have to make it non-public ???If you want it easy, go elsewhere.
    But seriously, the reflection capabilities were tagged onto Java as it grew, and were not designed to reflect the state of the art, but as a 'just enough to get by' solution. Most of the time people don't need it, so it's not there, any you have to roll your own.

  • How can i add custom attributes to a new Class Object using the API ?

    Hello everyone,
    Here is my problem. I just created a subclass of Document using the API (not XML), by creating a ClassObjectDefinition and a ClassObject. Here is the code :
    // doc is an instance of Document
    ClassObject co = doc.getClassObject();
    ClassObjectDefinition cod = new ClassObjectDefinition(ifsSession);
    cod.setSuperclass(co);
    cod.setSuperclassName(co.getName());
    cod.setName("MYDocument");
    ClassObject c = (ClassObject)ifsSession.createSchemaObject(cod);
    Everything seems to be OK since i can see the new class when i use ifsmgr. But my question is : how can i add custom attributes to this new class ? Here is what i tried :
    AttributeDefinition value = new AttributeDefinition(ifsSession);
    value.setAttribute("FOO", AttributeValue.newAttributeValue("bar"));
    c.addAttribute(value);
    But i got the following error message :
    oracle.ifs.common.IfsException: IFS-30002: Unable to create new LibraryObject
    java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01400: impossible d'insirer NULL dans ("IFSSYS"."ODM_ATTRIBUTE"."DATATYPE")

    void fr.sword.ifs.GestionDocument.IFSDocument.createDocument(java.lang.String)
    void fr.sword.ifs.GestionDocument.IFSDocument.main(java.lang.String[])
    So, what am i doing wrong ?
    More generally, are we restricted in the types of the attributes ? (for example, would it be possible to add an attribute that would be an inputStream ? Or an object that i have already created ?).
    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Guillaume,
    you're welcome. Don't know exactly, but assume that ATTRIBUTEDATATYPE_UNKNOWN
    is used to check for erronous cases only
    and it shouldn't be used otherwise.
    Creating your own objects could be simply done via
    ClassObject ifsClassObject;
    DocumentDefinition ifsDocDef = new DocumentDefinition(ifsSession);
    // get class object for my very own document
    ifsClassObject = ClassObject.getClassObjectFromLabel(ifsSession, "MYDOCUMENT");
    // set the class for the document i'd like to create
    ifsDocDef.setClassObject(ifsClassObject);
    // set attributes and content for the document...
    ifsDocDef.setAttribute("MYFOO_ATTRIBUTE",....);
    ifsDocDef.setContent("This is the content of my document");
    // create the document...
    PublicObject doc = ifsSession.createPublicObject(ifsDocDef);

  • How to get caller object reference from a method

    Hi,
    I am working a already existing Java Swing project, now I got a problem, in a method I need to get the caller object reference otherwise, I can't succeed this operation. So please tell me a way how to get the caller object reference from a method. that method would be static or regular method anything will do for me.

    Actually my doubt is, I have a method "addition" method, which is using by many classes so my requirement is in the addition method I want to write a code snippet which will identify and get the the caller object. Actually I tried Reflection.getcallerclass but there I am getting "CLASS" object not the actual object reference, but I want object reference.
    Actually we have a huge project which is writen plain JAVA, so in this project the authors written the Database connection package for single database transaction. so now we are using this project source code for JSF application in this web application the DB package has serve based on the dynamic db connection parameters, so if we want to change this package fully means need to solve the dependency problem in hundreds of classes, so my point is if I can access the caller object in the DB package when ever it gets called by any class from any where of the project. So actually I liked Reflection.getcallerclass, the way of implementation perfectly works for me but it is not giving caller object reference, if something gives the caller object then I can get the DB connection parameters then there is no need to pass the parameters in the hierarchy.You can add a parameter (of type Object) to your addition() method
    and everywhere you call the addition() method also pass this (which from the POW of the addition() method will be a reference to the calling class instance).
    There may be alternative solutions
    but none that require less effort.

  • Getting the object of a class that is already running

    there is one class a
    i created an object of class a
    a a1 = new a();
    i am in class B
    i want to get the 'a' class instance that is already running ie i want to access object a1 and these classes are not related. Can i get them?
    If yes how?
    It is urgent.

    1. class B could encapsulate class A.
    Class B
       A a1;
       public B(A a1)
          this.a1 = a1;
       //......remaining part of class
    }Now when you create an object of B, you could pass the a's object to B's constructor,
       A a1 = new A();
       B b1 = new B(a1);
      // to access the a object within b, usage is as below
       b1.a1.<a's methods>2. If you wish that the object of class A is required only in some methods of B, pass it as a parameter to B's methods
    class B
       public void someMethodThatNeedsA'sObject(A a1)
          //do something with a's object here
          //do something with B's own variables
       psvm() //main
           A a1 = new A();
           B b1 = new B();
           b1.someMethodThatNeedsA'sObject(a1);
    }ram.

  • How to get a LabVIEW class object to expose an invoke-node method?

    Hi,
          I like the property/invoke-node "paradigm" used for interacting with "objects".  Can LabVIEW-class objects expose their properties and methods this way?  Can one or more LabVIEW-class objects be compiled into a library or "assembly" (or other distrubution format) that allows the property/invoke-node usage?
    I've looked at (but not completely understood) "Creating LabVIEW Classes".  Have also searched for related posts.
    The pic below shows an invoke node wired to a class with a Public VI "VAT.Status.Hello.vi".  I'd like to see VAT.Status.Hello show-up as a Method.  (I just tried "Select Method", and selected "VAT.Status.Hello.vi" but dialog's "OK" button stays greyed-out.)
    Cheers.

    Hi Aristos,
          Thanks for the reply!  It was a bit dissappointing, though.
    It appears the LabVIEW-class object will be moving away from (what seems to me) a convenient object-interface presented by the invoke-node/method paradigm - which allows us to interface with a large set of "objects" (.NET, ActiveX, LabVIEW GUI, VISA Resource, ?) in a similar manner and independent of the object's origin.  Being able to read the methods and parameters that appear in these nodes is also helpful for understanding diagram logic!
    I do like the option of dropping a friendly "VI looking" icon on the diagram, but perhaps an optional - even default - VI-icon representation for a class-object invoke-node is feasible - so the LabVIEW class-object could be the more generic object first, but with a traditional-G representation(?)
    Given the answer "We would like, someday, to support the property node"
    and "in the next version of LV, wiring the LV class to the property/invoke nodes will break the wire so we'll avoid confusion in the future",
    ... I guess you'll break the wire in the next version, but (perhaps) allow it again - if support of the property node is ever implemented?
    Regards.
    P.S. For the record, huge THANKS to whoever it was that straightened-out enumerated-types (somewhere) between LV4.1 and LV6.1.  Every time I add or remove an enumeration in a typedef, I silently give thanks to the bright and thoughtful soul(s) who made this valuable tool work so well!
    Hello. This is your friendly neighborhood R&D guy for LabVIEW classes.
    Regarding your request about property and invoke nodes as relates to LV classes....
    Short story: We would like, someday, to support the property node. We have no intention of ever supporting the invoke node.
    Long story: As we were creating LV classes, we had to evaluate the right programming interface for these things. We wanted LV classes to behave as new data types in LV. A developer should be able to create a LV class, then give it to someone who doesn't even know OO programming, and that second programmer could use the new data type without learning a lot of new concepts. From this principle, we held fast to the idea that the programming interface should be subVI calls whereever possible. The invoke node is really nothing more than a VI minus the icon. If you want, you can popup on any subvi node and uncheck the option "View as Icon". This will make the node display in a way that has the terminals listed as text, like the invoke node. So, at the end of the day, the invoke node is simply a subroutine call in LV that is language dependent, as opposed to the language independent iconography of LV generally.
    The property node is a slightly different story -- the functionality of a property node is actually different than an invoke node as its terminals are various subsets of the properties available, not a fixed list of parameters like the invoke node. The property node provides a nice interface for setting multiple properties in a block and only having to check a single error return. Very friendly. Our intent is to allow you to create a VI that has 5 terminals: object in, object out, error in, error out, and either a single input or a single output of your chosen type. VIs with this conpane could be marked as "properties" of the class and would show up when you wire the class wire to the property node. We would call the subVIs behind the scenes as needed to get/set the properties.
    This is on the longer term roadmap because it is "syntactic sugar" -- it sweetens the programming style, but it is not necessary to program effectively. You can get the same effect by writing those same VIs and stringing them along on a block diagram "railroad track" style. We'll probably get around to it in three or four versions of LV -- there are some major user requests that impact functionality that have to get done first.
    PS -- in the next version of LV, wiring the LV class to the property/invoke nodes will break the wire so we'll avoid confusion in the future of people thinking there's a way to use these nodes.

  • Get JSF objects in a Filter Class

    Hi! I have a problem with my JSF application. As the most of the web applications I have a login at the begining and I place a Listener - Filter classes for catching the session timeout to returning the user to the login page. All this works OK. The problem it´s to validate that the user only has 1 session open at the time, when the user begin session I change a flag into it's database row, and when the user logout the flags change again to false (both actions (login and logout) was fired by the user clicking it's respective buttons), this works fine, but I want to change the data flag in the database row with the timeout Filter classes after pass 1 minute. My Filter class it's like this:

    String classname = "ExpnEvaluation";
    now how can i create object for the class ExpnEvaluation by using the string classname in which the class name is storted
    Thanks in advance

    i think we have to cast it, can u help me how to cast
    the obj to the classname that i get as inputThat's exactly the point why you shouldn't be doing this. You can't have a dynamic cast at compile time already. It doesn't make sense. Which is also the reason why class.forName().newInstance() is a very nice but also often very useless tool, unless the classes loaded all share a mutual interface.

  • Getting the objects for a class

    I am able to get all live classes of a dynpro by using method cl_gui_cfw=>get_living_dynpro_controls. (Also thanks to this forum).
    The resulting table has a reference to a class like ...
    How do I use this reference to:
    1. Get the objects for it?
    2. How can I then free the object from memory by using the "free" method.
    I guess I am asking how to dynamically assign it, then make sure it has a free method and then to use the method to actually free it.

    Hello Uwe
    My first reaction was "NO it cannot be that easy!!". It almost was but on the second line I get a short dump. Then I realised why: the other live control in the table was a sub class of the first class and as a result it was cleared on the first call.
    So I modified the call to be a recursive call (of the form) as follows...
    form clear_live_controls .
    DATA:
      gt_list       TYPE cnto_control_list,
      gt_wa like line of gt_list.
      REFRESH: gt_list.
      CALL METHOD cl_gui_cfw=>get_living_dynpro_controls

          control_list = gt_list.
      describe table gt_list lines tab_lines.
      if tab_lines = 0.
    *    Nothing
      else.
         loop at gt_list into gt_wa.
           gt_wa->free( ).
           exit.
         endloop.
         perform clear_live_controls.
      endif.
    endform.                    " clear_live_controls
    This took care of it.
    Many thanks for your help.

  • Getting an Object Identifier String given a line of source code? HELP!

    (forgot to close the code tag on that last one!)
    Hi there,
    I am in desparate need of getting the object identifier given a particular line of source code. I need this for the debugger I'm writing, and since the jdb forum never gets reponses; just more unanswered questions.
    Right so, here's my problem in more detail. I can find out when a method is called in the Java virtual machine, and what its name is, and arguments and values and such like - using the Java Debugging Interface. BUT: unfortunately I cannot get the object identifier used in the source code that generated this call. I can however get a unique long id that identifies this object .. if that helps?(thinking hashtables here maybe?!)
    So, I may know that the constructor of EddClass has been called, and this the following line generated this call:
    EddClass edd = new EddClass();.. so what I need is a fail safe way of finding out "edd" from this - given all types of method calls.
    This is quite tricky because there are loads of ways methods can be called e.g.
    tty.getClassExclusions(); // Here I would know getClassExclusions had been called, and I would need to find out the object identifier "tty" called it
    Temp a, b, c;
    a = b = c = new Temp(); // Here I would know the constructor for Temp had been called, but now I would just want to know "c"
    AnotherEg ae = (new Egg()).getAnotherEg(); // and in this last case if I had found out that the Egg constructor had been called, I don't want to find out any object identifier from this line of code - since the object is anonymous; however if I had found out that getAnotherEg() had been called I would want "ae"Ok, well - please help: I'm making a Java Animator that will be freely available - that serves to graphically animate the execution of another java program. It'd be cool if one of you guys could help make it really cool. Plus there are Dukes available!!
    - Edd.

    this is quite a complicated question I think!
    I'm not sure but you maybe need to know just about the whole java lang. spec to do this.
    I'm sure there are plenty of free java parsers around, so unless you have a lot of time available its probably best to download one, figure some way to feed it a single line from within a code block, and extract its symbol table.
    Once you have the symbol table, there will probably be some other data available from the parser to say which are identifiers.
    Its then up to your debugger to figure out which one is the interesting one!
    sorry this is so vague but I think you've asked for something that is quite involved!

    The supported JBoss version for 10.1.2 is JBoss EAP 5.1.2 but I don't think that your issue is caused because of this. Your issue is more of an environmental thing as you are probably getting two different versions getting loaded of class javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest and so correspondingly two different Class objects as the error shows. One reason for this could be if you include any server-specific libraries (in present case the Servlet API JAR which contains the class javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest) of a different version in the /WEB-INF/lib of your web application. Try removing it from there if so and see if that helps.
