Getting count function to return 0 if no results found

I'm trying to determine the count of how many records exist that match a certain criteria. The problem is that instead of getting a row with a value of 0 when no results match, I get no row at all. This is causing me a problem because I need to know when it's zero as well as non-zero.
Here's an example query:
select submissions.job_id, count(submissions.job_id) from submissions where submissions.job_id in (select jobs.job_id from jobs where jobs.parent_id = 53) group by job_id
I'm trying to get the number of submissions for each job with a parent_id of 53. The problem is that if a job has no submissions, I don't even get the job_id back to report that it has 0 submission.
I'm using Oracle 8.1.6.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Rich

I tried your suggested query and it has the same problem. If there are any jobs that don't have submissions related to them, that job_id is not returned in the list.
Here's what the query returned:
job_id count()
523     2
527     2
645     1
653     1
816     1
820     1
824     1
It's missing job_id 1029 which has a parent_id of 53 but has no submissions.
I'd like something like the following returned:
job_id count()
523     2
527     2
645     1
653     1
816     1
820     1
824     1
1029 0

    Scenario 2: If target_pct in the last record is any other value(say 0.01), p_out_count returned from the procedure is 10140.
    Please help me understand why the Table(Cast()) is not returning the correct results in Scenario 1. Also adding or deleting any record from the test data returns the correct results (i.e. if keep target_pct in the last record as 0 but add or delete any record).
    Let me know how can I attach the test data I am using to help you debugging as I don’t see any Attach file button on Post Message screen on the forum.

    I am not able to reproduce this problem with a small data set. I can only reproduce with the data having 10140 records.
    I am not sure if this is the memory issue as adding a new record also solves the problem.
    This should not be the error because of wrong way of filling the records in java as for testing purpose I just saved the records which I am sending from java in a table. I updated the stored procedure as well to read the data from the table and then perform TABLE(CAST()) operation. I am still getting 0 as the output for scenario 1 mentioned in my last mail.

  • How to get a function to return a value occuring after a character

    I need to write a function to return the next value occurring after the ":" character in a column. If multiple values of ":" occurs then the function should return the sum of the next value occurring after each ":" in the column.
    For example a rating value of 4:1 would return the value of 1. However, the rating of "5:1:1" should return a value of 1+1 = 2, and 6:2:1 will return of 2+1 = 3.
    I have the below function skeletion and trying to figure out how the select statement will compute based on the position of : in the column and add the values and return the value back to function.
    Function fn_check_internalrating(p_internalrating IN VARCHAR2)
          RETURN number
    IS
        cnumber number;
        cursor c1 is
       select ................................
    BEGIN
    open c1;
    fetch c1 into cnumber;
    close c1;
    RETURN cnumber;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS
    THEN RETURN NULL;
    END;

    Hi,
    You don't need a cursor: there's no table involved in this function, and no point in using any table.
    Here's one way:
    CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION  fn_check_internalrating
    (   p_internalrating   IN   VARCHAR2
    ,   p_delimiter            IN   VARCHAR2     DEFAULT     ':'
    RETURN  NUMBER
    DETERMINISTIC          -- Same input always produces same output
    IS
        cnumber     NUMBER     := 0;               -- value to be returned
        pos          PLS_INTEGER := INSTR ( p_internalrating
                                        , p_delimiter
                             );          -- position where delimiter was found
    BEGIN
        WHILE  pos != 0
        LOOP
            cnumber := cnumber + TO_NUMBER ( SUBSTR ( p_internalrating
                                                  , pos + 1
                                         , 1
         pos := INSTR ( p_internalrating
                          , p_delimiter
                   , pos + 1
        END LOOP;
        RETURN cnumber;
    END fn_check_internalrating;
    SHOW ERRORSThis assumes the function is a stand-alone function. If it's part of a package, you don't say CREATE OR REPLACE at the beginning.
    Try to make functions generic, so that if a similar (but not identical) situation comes up in 6 months from now, you can use the same function. I'm guessing that somethimes you may want to do the same thing with some character other than ':' before each number, so I added the 2nd (optional) argument p_delimiter. You can call the fucntion with either 1 or 2 arguments.
    If an error occurs in a PL/SQL fucntion, an error message (showing the exact location of the error) is displayed, and execution halts. If you use an EXCEPTION sectinn, you lose all that functionality, or have to code it yourself. Only use an EXCEPTION handler when you really have to.
    For this function, you may or may not want to. For example, if the character right after a delimiter is not a digit, the call to TO_NUMBER in function will raise "ORA-01722: invalid number". You may want to catch that error in an exception handler, and return 0 or NULL. On the other hand, you may want to test that the character after the delimiter is a digit before calling TO_NUMBER, and not have an EXCEPTION section.
    What else could go wrong? Try to think of potential problems and fix them when you first write the function. If you discover an error next year, you'll have to spend a fair amount of time finding the function, and getting acquainted with it again.
    What should the function return if p_internalrating is NULL, or doesn't contain any delimiters?
    What if there's a number longer than 1 digit after a delimiter, e.g. '6:78:9'?

  • Function that returns set of results

    Good morning!
    I need to make a function that would return set of results (records). I need to do a SELECT statement on that function later. Could someone throw me an example how to do this. I would be very gratefull. Thanks.
    EDIT: thing is i need to select list of objects that will match some complicated criteria and some mathematic calculations are needed (thats why i need to create a function).

  • Distinct Count doesn't return the expected results

    Hi All,
    I was fighting a little trying to implement a Distinct Count measure over an account dimension in my cube. I read a couple of posts relateed to that and I followed the steps posted by the experts.
    I could process the cube but the results I'm getting are not correct. The cube is returning a higher value compared to the correct one calculated directly from the fact table.
    Here are the details:
    Query of my fact table:
    select distinct cxd_account_id,
              contactable_email_flag,
              case when recency_date>current_date-365 then '0-12' else '13-24' end RECENCY_DATE_ROLLUP,
              1 QTY_ACCNT
    from cx_bi_reporting.cxd_contacts
    where cxd_account_id<>-1 and recency_date >current_date-730;
    I have the following dimensions:
         Account (with 3 different hierarchies)
         Contactable Email Flag (Just 3 values, Y, N, Unknown)
         Recency_date (Just dimension members)
    All dimensions are sparse and the cube is a compressed one. I defined "MAXIMUM" as aggregate for Contactable Email flag and Recency date and at the end, SUM over Account.
    I saw that there is a patch to fix an issue when different aggregation rules are implemented in a compressed cube and I asked the DBA folks to apply it. They told me that the patch cannot be applied because we have an advanced version already installed (Patch 11.2.0.1 ).
    These are the details of what we have installed:
          OLAP Analytic Workspace       11.2.0.3.0 VALID
          Oracle OLAP API 11.2.0.3.0 VALID
          OLAP Catalog 11.2.0.3.0 VALID
    Is there any other patch that needs to be applied to fix this issue? Or it's already included in the version we have installed (11.2.0.3.0)?
    Is there something wrong in the definition of my fact table and that's why I'm not getting the right results?
    Any help will be really appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Martín

    Not sure I would have designed the dimensions /cubes as you,  but there is another method you can obtain distinct counts.
    Basically relies on using basic OLAP DML Expression language and can be put in a Calculated Measure, or can create two Calculated measures
    to contain each specific result.  I use this method to calculate distinct counts when I want to calculate averages, etc ...
    IF account_id ne -1 and (recency_date GT today-365) THEN -
    CONVERT(NUMLINES(UNIQUELINES(CHARLIST(Recency_date))) INTEGER)-
    ELSE IF account_id ne -1 and (recency_date GT today-730 and recency_date LE today-365) THEN -
    CONVERT(NUMLINES(UNIQUELINES(CHARLIST(Recency_date))) INTEGER)-
    ELSE NA
    This exact code may not work in your case, but think you can get the gist of the process involved.
    This assumes the aggregation operators are set to the default (Sum), but may work with how you have them set.

    Michael Cooper

    Really? COUNT never returns NULL; it always returns 0 or a positive integer.
    Do you mean the query results in "no rows selected"?
    Is there any way I can get the value as zero instead of null? Please help.Do you want a query that will produce the same output as the query above, but will produce a single row containing 0 when the query above does not produce anything? That sounds like a job for an outer join:

  • Is there a way of getting LOOKUP function to return the address of a cell rather than the value?

    Hi
    I am wondering if there is a way of converting the value found in a LOOKUP function into a reference for the cell in question.
    I have constructed the following formula:
    =OFFSET(LOOKUP(A2,August :: $A),2,2)
    In an attempt to return the value of a cell which is two rows and two columns away from the cell returned by a LOOKUP function.
    But I am getting the error Argument 1 of OFFSET expects a reference but found "Name."
    Could someone advise?
    Thanks,

    Nick,
    To find the row that a searched-for value is in, use MATCH.

  • Stored function not returning result set unless recompiled

    Hi,
    I have a strange situation going on with a basic Java (1.6.0.17) application talking to an Oracle 11g (11.2.0.1.0) database. Basically what is happening is that sometimes a stored function's return value (a result set) is not making it as far as JDBC/Java, unless I recompile the stored function (with absolutely no changes to the application or function's code). I am always able to successfully see the result set if I call the function directly from within SQL Developer, just not on the Java app/JDBC side.
    I've tried running with 3 different physical Oracle 11g servers and tried running the app on a couple of machines. I'm wondering if this is either some kind of caching issue or perhaps a JDBC bug/misconfiguration.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Attached to this message:

    I was able to get the answer as 12 on the month column in the Dim_Time using the count distinct.
    The main reason i was trying this is because i have a VALUE column in VIew_A. I am trying to sum the values of these, but when i use the sum function, the output is quite huge and wrong. I dosen't match with the monthly figures.
    For eg:
    Month
    Income Cost
    JAN
    186.96
    FEB
    309.29
    MAR
    246.82
    APR
    247.95
    998.76
    1,462.74
    MAY
    160.27
    645.60
    1,643.84
    JUN
    172.19
    693.61
    927.12
    JUL
    150.27
    605.32
    855.89
    AUG
    133.61
    483.66
    538.20
    789.22
    SEP
    144.56
    412.42
    582.34
    824.84
    OCT
    264.96
    315.66
    364.00
    631.32
    1,067.32
    1,466.22
    NOV
    240.39
    832.10
    968.32
    1,058.73
    1,638.38
    DEC
    215.81
    857.30
    869.31
    24005.34
    But if i use the sum function on the Income/cost column, the value i get is
    C_MONTH
    SUM(INCOME_COST)
    JAN
    5,795.86
    FEB
    8,660.21
    MAR
    7,651.52
    APR
    81,283.62
    MAY
    75,941.13
    JUN
    53,787.67
    JUL
    49,955.96
    AUG
    60,285.39
    SEP
    58,924.80
    OCT
    127,394.01
    NOV
    142,137.76
    DEC
    60,215.18
    This just doesn't work out. I need the answer to be 24005 by using the sum function

  • How to return two XML result sets using the function

    Hi Experts,
    Thanks.

    So that I want to return two XML result sets if the query returns more than 50,000 records.
    One XML result set with 50,000 and another XML result set with remaining records.
    How to incorporate this in my function.
    Have the function return a collection of CLOB then.
    DBMS_XMLGEN can handle pagination so it's easy to adapt your existing code.
    Here's an example fetching data in batches of max. 3 rows each, using a pipelined function :
    SQL> create or replace type clob_array is table of clob;
      2  /
    Type created
    SQL>
    SQL> create or replace function genXmlRowset (p_deptno in number) return clob_array pipelined
      2  is
      3    ctx    dbms_xmlgen.ctxHandle;
      4    doc    clob;
      5  begin
      6
      7    ctx := dbms_xmlgen.newContext('SELECT empno, ename FROM scott.emp WHERE deptno = :1');
      8    dbms_xmlgen.setBindValue(ctx, '1', p_deptno);
      9    dbms_xmlgen.setMaxRows(ctx, 3);
    10
    11    loop
    12
    13      doc := dbms_xmlgen.getXML(ctx);
    14      exit when dbms_xmlgen.getNumRowsProcessed(ctx) = 0;
    15      pipe row (doc);
    16
    17    end loop;
    18
    19    dbms_xmlgen.closeContext(ctx);
    20
    21    return;
    22
    23  end;
    24  /
    Function created
    SQL> set long 5000

  • I get an error when i try to execute a function that returns a date value

    Hi,
    I'm new in ODP.NET, i'm make a package that contains a function that returns a date i.e.
    Package Body General_pkg is
    Function Get_Day Return Date is
    vd_day date;
    Begin
    select sysdate into vd_day from dual;
    return vd_day;
    end Get_Day;
    End General_pkg;
    i use the next code to execute the function:
    OracleCommand cmdData = new OracleCommand("General_pkg.Get_Day", cnx);
    cmdData.CommandType = Commandtype.StoredProcedure;
    OracleParameter PRM;
    PRM = new OracleParameter();
    PRM.ParameterName = "VDATE";
    PRM.OracleDbType = OracleDbType.Date;
    PRM.Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue;
    cmdData.Parameters.Add(PRM);
    try
    cmdData.ExecuteNonQuery();
    catch(OracleException e);
    When i execute this code, i have and exception, which say "identifier GENERAL_PKG.Get_Day must be declare..."
    Obviously the package is correctly created in ORACLE i tested first in sql plus and it works but in ODP.NET they don't recognize the package or the function i don't know... please help!!!

    OOOOOPSS.... i forgot that i change the user in my conecction string that's why it didn't work...
