  • We are getting ¿ stored into our Oracle 10g database  (Microsoft fault)

We are getting ¿ stored into our Oracle 10g database that is using WE8ISO8859P1 character set.
Problem is caused by the following:
Microsoft released software (in particularly MS Word) before considering any ANSI or ISO standard (although they claimed so).
At that time of pioneering graphical interface - they were the standard. Since then things changed. Microsoft initially targeted US marked, however very soon they wanted to expanded to Europe. For that they needed to get standardized character set instead of one initially being in use. Microsoft re-mapped character set in newer applications using Windows-1252 character set which is compatible with ISO-8851-1 (we are using in our Java Web applications). That cleared obstacles to forward on European market, where extended characters are necessary (like in French, Dutch, German languages...)
What happened with the initial character codes before Microsoft agreed with ISO to standardize characters? Well - Nothing.
So what are the consequences of that?
If we are using Microsoft Word document in conjunction with one of the oldest character set (universe) the ice-age character mapping is still there. So when we "cut and paste" the content to another application, characters sets are not mapped anymore. Especially French language "is sensitive to this" The Microsoft character set in Word decimally coded 146 ( ' ) is very often used in French.
Therefore if the text is generated in MS Word using old character mapping (universe) which we do, and using method of "cutting and paste" we are mismatching character set interpreted by other, newer applications.
Initially in the MS words (apostrophe) ' had code 191; then later after implementing Windows 1252 character set being moved to code 146 in accordance to ISO. Well ISO threat character coded 191 as ¿. So if you are using MS Word universe character set, ' looks like ' but in newer applications or ISO compatible applications it looks like ¿.
Can anyone provide me with periodically cleanup routines that replace garbled characters entered by Microsoft applications into Oracle database ?
    Thanks
    Brendon

  • Oracle 10g Documentation (still reflects HTMLDB 1.6)

Hi Joel (since you usually catch this stuff),
I was just on the documentation site at http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/master_index?letter=t and saw that it still reflects the ducumentation from HTMLDB 1.6 (look at the entries for Tabs).
Not sure how or who you coordinate this with in the documentation site, but figured you'd want to know.
    Bill Ferguson

    Hi Arie,
The site is supposed to have all of the current documention for everything 10gR2 related.
Since Apex v3 is the current version, I'd think that it would contain the current Apex manual entries as well. All of the manuals that are linked to it are for whatever the current versions are of those products, PL/SQL, Spatial, Oracle Text, etc.
It may be complicated by the fact that Apex is updated more frequently than other Oracle products, but I've always used the site to see/reference the current documentation (or syntax) of whatever Oracle product. For older versions, I'll go to tahiti.oracle.com which has links to previous versions of Oracle documentation.
I've been to numerous Oracle classes over the years and the instructors always say to go to tahiti.oracle.com to get the link to the current version of all Oracle documentation, so I figured the link would also get the current version of Apex documentation as well.
It's really useful tracking down the correct (and current) syntax, since it has all Oracle documentation indexed and linked for quick searching. I can't think of any examples right now, but I remember in the past seeing examples of different syntax usage across different Oracle products, probably new products.

  • Getting Deployment error in Oracle 10g server

Hii while deploying EAR in Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g. I am getting following error message and an resoluation message, which i could not able to proceed further.
Deployment Failed : Another operation in progress which prevents your operation from completing at this time.
Resolution : If you are using a file-based repository and there are no other concurrent operations, please use the dcmctl utility resetFile Transaction command to clean up any abnormaly terminated file-based repository operations.
I restarted the server and tried deploying several times but no use,So could anyone tell me, what command I should execute to overcome this problem .
    Thanks
    Jeyapraaksh

As the 'Resolution' suggests: dcmctl resetFile Transaction
If you are unsure then navigate to $ORACLE_HOME/dcm and type dcmctl -help. It should give you a list of options to restore from archive, update the configuration and restart the instances etc.

  • PT 8.5 new installtion, ALTER script getting created wrongly on Oracle 10g.

    Greetings!
I'm trying to Install HRMS 9.1 with PT 5.0 on Oracle 10.2.0.1. I believe i have been following installation steps as documented. As part of storeddl.dms i executed only ddlora.dms only , remaining databases related lines commented out. The next step after this is ALTERING the tables after importing PPLTLS84CUR project.
When i created SQL script for ALTER... I have chosen ALTER BY Table Name option as specified. Problem in the script is even for LONG columns also it is creating INSERT SELECT statement which is not supported by ORACLE for LONG columns. in reality it suppose to create a PL/SQL snippet where ever it sees a table with a LONG column. Instead it is creating simple INSERT SELECT. Thus Alter process generating errors , at the end i wouldn't have data into those tables with LONG columns. becz the of the build sequence of steps...
#1 Create temp, #2 insert actual into temp, #3 Drop actual, #4 Rename Temp to actual . since #2 errored out the temp wouldn't have rows , #3 drops original which has rows, #4 renames the empty table to Original table..
Is there any piece i missed... Thanks in advance....

I recently downloaded Final Cut Pro X from the App store to my MacBook Pro (OS X-10.9.5). I need to move it and the projects to a different MBP in the office. Do I need the hardcopy disks in order to move the application? If so, how do I get them?

you can redownload the application from the app store using the same ID you used to purchase it originally at no charge.

  • Getting hard copy proofs of an e-book?

Apologies in advance if this has already been asked, was posted in an incorrect discussion area, or is somehow public knowledge which I missed out on.
Due to a prohibitively small budget and the extreme length of my book-to-be, distributing a print version won't be an option for me until my digital sales hit a certain level. However, it won't feel like a book to me unless I can hold a paper version in my hands, and it would be nice to have a few copies to give to friends. Is it possible to order a very small quantity of print books (as proofs or otherwise) for an e-book? The issue here is really about mixed formats, not quantity. I don't expect loopholes or freebie copies, I just wanted to know if it's possible at all to get a few print copies without gumming up the e-book process or committing to future print batch orders.

Dan is correct, you will have to create a New Project for a printbook, but note that the page set-up for a printbook is nothing like that for an epub. Take a look inside any book to see what I mean.
But, a Proof of a printbook is possibly not as expensive as you think? (Unless it's hardbacked full-colour and the Proof being the first book you buy to see if it was set up OK.) Use the Calculator to work out the cost. Also you do not have to buy stock to sell. You can sell off Lulu's pages or you can get a free ISBN and sell from places like Amazon, and the buyer carries the cost and you get paid your share.

I hope, my question is clear.
Please, help in solving the doubt.

    Hello,
There is no difference whether you download from OTN or get so called licensed copy of oracle software. It's free to download and free to use you are using for personal eduction purpose, but if you are using for commercial purpose then you should contact oracle sales for pricing but you can continue with the same software. Hi,
Did you follow the procedure described in Oracle 10g documentation titled as 'Advanced Security' about "Using Transparent Data Encryption" (Chapter 3).????
Also , in the advisable actions of Oracle about this type of error is this....
Action: Execute the command again using the correct wallet password or verfying a wallet exists in the specified directory. If necessary, create a new wallet and initialize it.
    Regards ,
    Simon
