Getting started, sort of

A couple of weeks ago I got my Mindstorm NXT and immediately installed the UI so I could play around with things and become familiar with the interface.  I can tell this will be a lot of fun.  I have heard you can go right to the firmware level and start programming the device at a less abstract level, and that is what I am interested in doing.  I found the link for the Labview toolkit for lego mindstorm over at the NI website, downloaded and tried to install, but the install immediately balks with the following message:
    LabVIEW 7.1 or greater must be installed prior to installing the LabVIEW Toolkint for LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT.
I assumed this meant I should uninstall all the stuff that came on the Mindstorm CD (and all the updated installs I downloaded from the Lego website).  So I did that, then tried installing the LabView toolkit again; but I get the same message.
I'm already familiar with the ARM7 in the form of the ST-2051 microcontroller from ST-Micro, so I'm not a complete stranger to ARM and thumb instructions and writing embedded firmware.  I've also worked with a couple of different ST-Micro toolchains, and the Cosmic toolchain, Rowley's toolchain, and embedded linux, so I'm at least vaguely familiar with the trouble I'm looking to get into by wanting to get right into the firmware level and do my development in C or C++ .  On the other hand, I'm an absolute beginner with this toolchain and can't get past the installer, so I know I need to raise my hand and ask for help!   I did write this up and send it to the NI support page, but I never heard back.
So how do I install this thing?  Is there maybe a FAQ or other document for getting the toolchain installed?
Many thanks!

Hi zzaappp,
The NXT Toolkit was not designed to work with the software that came with your MINDSTORMS NXT.  Instead, the toolkit is for users of LabVIEW, probably NI's most popular product.  While the MINDSTORMS software and LabVIEW have many similarities, you'll need to obtain a version of LabVIEW to use the toolkit.  A good place to get started on that is this page on our website: http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/4435.
I'm going to venture a guess, though, and assume that you're probably not very familiar with writing code in LabVIEW.  If you're more comfortable writing code in C or C++, you may be more interested in the Fantom SDK.  Fantom is the device driver used to communicate with the NXT, and our developers have published an SDK that will allow you to use the Fantom library in your own C/C++ code.  This is how many other software developers have written their own programs to communicate with the NXT.  The Fantom SDK is available from LEGO's NXT'reme website: http://mindstorms.lego.com/Overview/NXTreme.aspx.  You'll want to download the Driver SDK and the Bluetooth DK.
Hope this helps you get started!  Let us know if you have more questions along the way.

    Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

  • So Hard to get started

    Hello all,
    I want to state somethings that I have found so confusing in getting started with Oracle Business Intelligence.
    Whenever someone attempts to get in the Oracle BI world, there seems to be a myriad of products, tools and suites that one may not really know where to start.
    Up till now, I have not been able to pick or find a resource on what is which. Sorry to compare products, I have been taken a look at Microsoft Database and its associated BI solutions, and indeed it was relatively much easier to say this does this. But for as long as a I have been in Oracle Database usage and putting my hand on work using its tools, I find it hard differentiating
    Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition from
    Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition One and also from
    Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition Plus from
    Oracle Essbase
    or differentiating
    Hyperion Enterprise from
    Oracle BI Applications
    and why I should not install tools like Oracle BI Publisher or Oracle Data Miner or Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) when I have any of the above installed.
    Thank God for Oracle 11g. The confusion is a lot reduced, because with 11g, almost everything seem to be in the right place.
    So, my request is that someone should please show me a reference that tell what is different from what with respect to the above mentioned BI products.
    Regards,
    Michael

    It's all on the Oracle web site, I think you need to do a bit of homework research before asking a question like this...
    OBISE = Old Oracle Discoverer.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bi/standard-edition.html
    OBISE One = Cut-down OBIEE version plus OWB.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bi/standard-edition-one.html
    OBIEE = OBIEE+ plus Hyperion Essbase See:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bi/enterprise-edition.html
    Oracle Essbase = Proper OLAP cubes
    http://www.oracle.com/appserver/business-intelligence/essbase.html
    Oracle BI Applications = It's a bit pre-packaged BI Application (based on OBIEE) that's used to do BI on Oracle Apps
    http://www.oracle.com/appserver/business-intelligence/bi-applications.html
    Oracle BI Publisher = Pixel Perfect reports
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/xml-publisher/index.html
    Oracle Data Miner = Data mining, if you don't know what that is then you probably don't need it.
    OWB = ETL
    All in all I would say you are getting confused and you are mixing too many products in the same bag. Sure you could say it's "confusing" to have so many products. But if you were to go to the supermarket without knowing what to buy, wouldn't that be confusing as well? Rather than looking at "what's available" you should look at what sort of product you need and based on that search which products meet your needs. Or would you go to the supermarket and ask to see and understand what every product does before buying what you need?

  • Getting started with an iBook G3?

    Hey,
    I just got an iBook G3 (500mhz, snow, airport, 10gb hd, upgraded ram), to compliment my iMac (G5 rev c) and I'm a little new.
    It was used, I got it via trade.
    Does anyone have some tips for me to get started with it ? I'm wanting to upgrade the HD to at least 20 GB, and to max out the ram. Any hints on that ?
    Also, where can I get a new battery and charger ?
    Also, what else should I know about it ?
    It will mainly be used for writing (novel, fan-fics), surfing the web (wirelessly), and when I'm traveling...
    Oh, it has OSX10.2 installed.

    Hi, Josh. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    How much RAM is installed?
    Does it have the original AirPort card installed? (You may want to install one, if not, to enable wireless access to the internet.)
    Did the original system CD's and the OS X 10.2 software CD's come with it? If not, try to get the person you got it from to give them to you. You will need them if you intend to upgrade the hard drive (and for maintenance, even if you don't upgrade the hard drive).

    Enough dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from a logic board problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and be aware of how this logic board problem manifests itself.
    It has been suggested that you can minimize the chance of a logic board failure of this sort by never picking it up by the front left corner alone. Pick it up with both hands or in the center under the trackpad.
    It's also a good idea not to close it any more often than you need to in order to minimize the chance of the backlight cable (and other cables and wires) becoming pinched in the hinge or broken. When you have some time, check out the Discussion thread in the Displays Forum entitled 90 degrees and black out!!!!
    Information on using the battery to maximize both life and lifespan can be found here.
    You can download the manual for the iBook (Dual USB) from this page:

  • Java Applet HelloWorld "Getting Started With Applets" example not working

    Hi there,
    It's been ages since I ran my Linux CentOS boot of Linux but I am going through the official oracle java applet tutorials, just every time I try and run the "Hello World" applet in Firefox 17.0.3 and I am running the Iced Tea thing for java applets.
    Every time I try and run the example from the following code:
    import javax.swing.JApplet;
    import javax.swing.SwingUtilities;
    import javax.swing.JLabel;
    public class HelloWorld extends JApplet
      // called when the user enters the html page:
      public void init() // keep apps within the init() function very small as per the http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/deployment/applet/appletMethods.html
        try{
          SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait(new Runnable()
            public void run()
           JLabel myLabel = new JLabel("Hello World");
           add(myLabel);
            } // end running the application
          }); //end of swing invokeand wait
        } catch (Exception error){ // end user running the app in page
           // System.err.println("GUI didn't work on initial run");
    }It keeps bringing up the error "Start: Applet not initialized" I did google that basic error and from what I found I should consult the JavaConsole, I know the console was removed from the Firefox menu quite a while ago. So went to find a way of loading it using the IcedTea one but it keeps bringing up a load of errors in even trying to run that.
    Is there anyway of sorting this out? I mean I have even tried installing the one on the oracle website, the plain JDK but nothing seems to work.
    Is there anyone that can help me get applets working? I was even going to go as far as to reinstall my distro but I want to avoid that as much as possible.
    Thanks and I look forward to any replies,
    Jeremy.

    in the Getting Started with Java DB tutorial they
    tell u how to set ur "DERBY_HOME" (what is that?).
    once i press enter after typing this command:
    set DERBY_HOME=D:\Java\Java
    Phonebook\javadb in my command prompt do i get
    any message or does it just go to the next line?type env or set or whatever in the command line to see what your environment variables are set to
    they also tell u how to set ur "JAVA_HOME" (what is
    that?). The Java installation you want to use
    in their example they give u this: set
    JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\j2se1.4.2_05but in my java folder i have jdk1.6.0 and jre1.6.0
    but no j2se1.4.2_05, so which 1 must i choose?It's up to you. I'd go with 1.6
    also once ive done this: set
    DERBY_HOME=D:\Java\Java Phonebook\javadb this
    set JAVA_HOME=D:\Program
    Files\Java\jre1.6.0 and this set
    PATH=%DERBY_HOME%\bin;%PATH% and then type
    sysinfo to verify that the variables were set
    correctly i get these errors: 'D:\Java\Java' is
    not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file and '""'
    is not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file any help would
    really be appreciated because this is really killing
    me!you need to set your path variable - so something like:
    set PATH=C:\Program Files\Java\j2se1.4.2_05\bin

  • Some Help to get started needed for a newbie

    I am attempting to add some simple email functionality to a small utility

    Can anyone tell me where to find some documentation that will help me to

    How do I install it?
    Do I need a Type Library for it to use it effectively with Delphi?
    Is there some sort of basic skeleton code that I can refer to?

    It will be a long hard road but..
    for VB (so you will need to translate for Delphi)
    Add references to Groupwise.exe to your project and Groupware type library
    GWCMA1.DLL
    Then this will create a new email and drop in a few addresses if supplied
    (eg from your CRM)
    Public Sub SendEmail(ByVal lsEmailAddress As String, ByVal lsDomain As
    String, lblProgress As Label)
    Dim vCommander As Object
    Dim rc As Long
    Dim sResult As String
    Dim lsOperation As String
    Dim i As Integer
    Dim sUserName As String
    Dim sEmailTo As String
    Dim nPtr As String
    Dim lsMsg As String
    On Error GoTo Error_Trap

    Else
    If nPtr > 1 Then
    sUserName = left$(sEmailTo, nPtr - 1)
    End If
    If nPtr < Len(sEmailTo) Then
    sEmailTo = Mid$(sEmailTo, nPtr + 1)

    End If

  • Is it meant to be this difficult to get started?

    I've known about the capabilities of IQ for a long time, but never quite got round to working on it. With the introduction of the Analytics Edition of Crystal Server, it looks like the time is right. My background is 20 years of Crystal, including the Enterprise (SAP BI) products from first release, MS SQL since 6.5, QlikView, SSIS & C#.
    However, all that's been on Windows, it seems that IQ is mostly used on Unix. Maybe that explains my problems so far.
    The quickstart documentation gets no further than creating a trivial database and loading data from a flat file. Then it leaps into all sorts of stuff I don't need to worry about quite yet.
    All I want to do is import data from MS SQL Server 2012, just copying the tables that already exist. My expectation had been some sort of wizard or UI that allowed me to select the tables in the source to have them created in the destination, then have the data import. Something like the wizards in QlikView that generate your initial script. I can't even find out the definition of what should be in the sql.ini file.
    Sybooks on line hints at lots of stuff, but never gets around to an explanation.
    I've found a variety of long winded Youtube videos that explain very little at the basic level before leaping into optimization.
    At the moment, I have a vile UI (written in flash!) and an equally vile query tool to write script. I can't find any step by step documentation beyond 'load the ready rolled demo data'. Most of the docs I have found aren't even for version 16.
    Please tell me I've missed a treasure trove of documentation, or a selection of getting started guides.

    SAP PowerDesigner can reverse engineer an MS SQL Server database and generate a script to create the IQ schema for you.  Use Microsoft DTS to extract the data to a flat file, then have PowerDesigner generate the LOAD TABLE scripts for you.  Run the LOAD TABLE scripts as described in the IQ Quick Start Guide.  Not a built in wizard, but not too many steps.

  • Need "getting started" help...

    Hi everyone,
    I'm fresh to Java3D and I've seen the tutorials and all. But I already know Jazz (Java 2D-based graphics engine), and I think it's much more heavy to get into Java 3D than it was to get to know Jazz...
    Does anyone know any lightweight tutorials or other ways of easily getting started? What I wanna do is virtual worlds with objects moving around (simulations).
    Warm regards,
    Jez

    The comment about knowing a 2d engine is like saying "I can walk but it is hard to rock climb" - both depend on you having legs, but just because you can do one it doesn't mean the other is equally easy. The fact is that 3d is hard. Java3d tries to make it easier for us, but sometimes the way it works can actually be harder to understand than the underlying maths it is building on, especially if you don't know where to look for stuff in the javadocs. When I was getting started in j3d I had exactly the same problem- I'm still sort of getting started but I have put together a tutorial on the stuff I have learned already, which doesn't expect you to really know much about j3d and might be the kind of thing you're after:

  • Creating Extensions - How to get started?

    I've been snooping around for some tutorials or information on how I can get started on building extensions for Dreamweaver CS3 but I'm not turning up much. Does anyone have any sources for this sort of thing?
    Also, generally speaking, can you build the GUI for the extension in Flash/Flex and have the GUI communicate with, say, the desktop through the Dreamweaver API?

    Jason,
    I mention a few resources in this blog post:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/dreamweaver/2009/02/extending_dreamweaver_getting.html
    The SDK mentioned in the comments can be found here:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=extensionDetail&extid=1009962
    You'll get a few errors about menu items that can't be put in the specified location, but they are added in the Commands menu, so all functionality is there. That error has been fixed, but that extension has not yet been updated on the Exchange.
    Starting in CS4, you can use Flash for UI, but I don't think you can access anything outside of DW. There's documentation here:

  • How to post a XCelsius in the BPC Web Application Getting Started page

    Hi Experts,
    I'm new using BPC 7.5 on NetWeaver. When opening the Getting Started tab in the BPC Web Application there is a white page that I would want to fill with content. This content should be a XCelsius Dashboard linked to the Query or InfoCube on which I`m planning. Creating the XCelsius Dashboard is not the problem, but to insert it in the Getting Started panel of the BPC Web application. Has anyone an idea how to do it or how to proceed. Ideas or a little how-to would be perfect.
    Thanks very much in advanced,
    Àlex

    Hi.
    Try this...
    const string LIST_PAR_NAME = "lu";
    string listName = string.Empty;
    if (this.Request.Params.AllKeys.Contains(LIST_PAR_NAME))
    listName = this.Request.Params[LIST_PAR_NAME];
    else
    throw new ArgumentException("Par lu is not present.");
    SPList listExport = web.Lists[listName];
    However take a look at this
    http://zsvipullo.blogspot.it/2013/10/get-splist-from-internal-name.html?q=getlist
    to check how GetList method is faster than web.Lists[].

  • With Open ESB CD in hand, how do I get started?

    I spent time at the Open ESB booth at JavaOne 2007 talking with the Sun representatives and engineers about Open ESB.
    I'm glad I did, but I'm having a heck of a time getting started.
    I have all of the requirements set-up running on Solaris 10 development server.
    I've used the Service Oriented Architectures using BPEL from Java BluePrints, which really helped, but I feel I don't know enough yet to apply it towards real world projects yet.
    What other resources are recommened to learn more about SOA, BPEL on the JBI Framework?
    Thanks,

    Pinstriped_Dude: That's a very good point which I totally overlooked, thanks.
    I've been tasked to learn (not really tasked - I'm always happy to learn) about ESB, SOA and JBI - so far I'm taking baby steps and making progress.
    Thanks again,
