Getting the cover off the heatsink, dual processor

My Power Mac G5 (dual processor) recently had some internal burning/fire/smoke issues inside the big cpu/heatsink box, and all I want to do is to take this apart and see what burned, but I can't get the **** thing off! The big box with the two G5 logos on it is being very uncooperative... There are no resources online for getting this thing open. There's a plastic thing at the left end that seems like it wants to come off, and the fans at the other end are slightly mobile. Please help!

I just went through the take-apart exercise to get to my processors. When looking at the processors, on the upper right side, there is a small piece of gray plastic that looks like a tiny circle on the aluminum wall between the processors and the graphics card/PCI slot area. This is a pin that holds the cover in place. I had to destroy that tiny piece of plastic by first sliding some iPod-opening tools to get a start, then some really thin screwdrivers to pry is some more, then a little fiddling to get some wire cutters in to grasp it and pull it out. Once removed, the cover slides towards the front of the computer and out, then you'll see the 4 metal pins which hold the cover in place.
But once I got that off, the next challenge was getting to all of the screws holding the processors down. You will need a long magnetic driver and the right sized torx and hex bits. I was able to pull every screw out and surgically remove them all with chopsticks and various other tools. But even then, when I pulled at the processors, they would come up about 2-3mm, then appear to be stuck. I eventually gave up and put everything back together. I'm guessing I need a new power supply, but I'd hate to replace that and discover I need a new logic board or processors. Alas, this Mac appears to be very difficult to take apart.
My advice to you is to not bother and just wait for the new product announcements at MacWorld before purchasing a replacement. I'm hoping that the Mini and/or iMac update has external eSATA so I can attach large 1TB hard drives at full bus speeds.

  • How do i get Windows 2000 off the VPC 5 disc to install with VP 7

VPC 5 With windows 2000 upgraded to VPC 6 ran great. But hey I thought lets upgrade so I bought VPC 7 Stand-alone, installed XP PRO and it is soooooo
Sloooow. I want to get Windows 2000 off the VPC 5 disc to install on VPC 7 to see if there is a difference. Yeah we got 1.5 gigs of Ram and a Dual processor
Machine. Maybe something else is going on but I cant figure what. So How do I get Windows 2000 off that VPC 5 disc???

Yep tried that. No go but thanks.
Some of the previous versions of the VPC CDs
(unfortunately, I can't remember which) were hybrids
and doubled as not only the VPC for Mac installer CD
but also the Windows OS installer CD. You might try
creating a new virtual PC and then when asked for a
Windows installer disk, insert and capture your VPC 5
disk. I have no idea if this will work for you.
Later versions of VPC came with the Windows OS
pre-installed on VPC disk images and not with a
Windows installer. If your version has a disk image,
copy it from your version 5.0 CD and try opening that
in VPC 7.0. You should see a conversion process.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • How do I GET THE BACK OFF THE G4?

My grandaughter used the optical slot for a piggy bank.  I need to get the back off the G4 to get the coins out.  Anyone know what too you use?
    Susan

    Dear Susan,
Many thanks for the clarification! We can work with that.
The illustrated guides for taking apart G4 iBooks are here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iBook_G4
They show four different models based on processor speed but I think getting to the optical drive is about the same for all of them. Still, select the guide that matches your processor speed (available by doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu) and, when that guide comes up, click the "optical drive" section.
Looks very complex so you may need third-party help. Apple considers the iBooks "vintage" and will no longer work on them in an Apple retail store. However, most Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) will work on older units subject to parts availability. Use this link to find one:
    https://locate.apple.com/
I'm not sure about cost but a friend had a MacBook Pro with a failed slot-loading optical drive and an AASP quoted him about US$150 parts and labor--and that was several years ago.
There is a separate forum here for the iBooks that may have more info on revivinig the drive, but I dont see a way to get around the complex takeapart shown in the guides I linked.

Best wishes for getting the iBook back to normal. They are nice computers. Another friend ran one well beyond any reasonable expected service life and it was still going when he upgraded to a newer Intel Mac.
Please post back if you have any more questions!

  • My 40gb can be played but Itunes says it is corrupt.  I want to get the music off the Ipod onto my new computer, old computer died which had all the data on it (crap on my behalf I know)  Anyone know how to do this?

My hard drive is corrupt even though I can listen to the music on the Ipod.  Itunes says it is corrupt so obviously cannot read it properly.  You can hear the disk reader resetting every few seconds preventing the data recovery.
We can see the track listings and playlists which we used for our wedding in 2005 and desperately want them back.
Sadly we lost the hard drive that had Itunes on it with all our music which we dont have a back up of.
Is there anyway it can be repaired and then we get the music off the Ipod and get it back on a new pc....and back it up of course?!!!

From the OP: "My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. "
They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod.

  • My IPod touch's battery will not charge. How do I get my info off the old IPod onto a new one ?

I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

If iTunes sees the iPod then:
    - iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here;
    Copy music
    - Connect theiPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the new iPod from that backup.
Note that the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.
If iTunes does not see the iPod you are out of luck unless a Date Recovery company can get the data off the iPod.

My phone was stolen.  How can I get my photos off the iCloud with Snow Leopard.

    Welcome to the Apple Community
You can't, if the photos are in photostream you need a compatible device, if they are in a backup, you can only use the backup to restore to a new device.

  • I accidentally hit the install software update on my IPad and I am not by my computer and won't be for 2 weeks.  Is there any way I can get my IPad off the picture of connecting to ITunes?

I accidentally hit the install software update on my IPad and I am not by my computer and won't be for 2 weeks.  Is there any way I can get my IPad off the picture of connecting to ITunes?

No. You must connect your iPad to a computer (it does not have to be yours) in order to restore it to factory settings.
Once you're home, you can restore it from a backup.
Any content that you did not backup has been lost.

For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod Touch or iPhone. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer data (such as playcounts and ratings), movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well.
