Getting the XI tools to pull down again?

How do I get the XI tools to download to a workstation again if I suspect something wrong with them?

You need to clear the Java Web Start applications folder. Exactly how to do this depends on which version you are using, but here is the general idea:
1. Start the Java Web Start Application Manager. It might be in a "Java Web Start" program group in the start menu. Otherwise look for javaws.exe under the JRE path.
2. Go to the Preferences section. On mine its available from the menu under File->Preferences.
3. Go to the Advanced tab. There should be a section labeled Applications Folder Options with a button labeled Clear Folder. Press this to delete the cached applications.
Next time you access the tools, they will be downloaded again.

    When you plug it in to iTunes does it show up under devices? Try restoring it. That's the best thing you can do if you're out of warrenty

  • I can't get the gap tool to work right

    I just bought InDesign which I'm attempting to use to create a book with 500+ pics.  A big selling point was the new gap tool which was supposed to make the interface significantly more practical for working with lots of images.  Unfortunately I can't seem to get it to work right.  It looks to me like a bug in the gap detection algorithm.
    What's supposed to happen according to the video tutorials is that when you position the cursor between frames, the space between them changes to a brown color and the cursor changes.  This allows you to click and drag to change the gap.  In my documents, when I try this, it rarely detects the gap between frames.  So the cursor remains a circle with a slash through it.  If I keep moving the cursor around the frame edges for 30 secs or more, it sometimes briefly detects the gap and indeed allows dragging.  It's very frustrating and time consuming because if the cursor is moved just a pixel or two, it loses the gap and the cursor reverts to the circle/slash before I have a chance to click/drag the gap.
    I've tried using different kinds of objects, different frame thicknesses, colors, different spacings between frames...all sorts of things.  It seems a little harder for it to find vertical gaps than horizontal gaps.  Anyway, does anyone know if this is a known bug?
    I'm running XP Pro SP3 on a 3.4 GHz P4, 4GB, Intel chipset.  Just ran the latest Adobe update to ID CS5 7.0.3.

    Thanks for the tips, folks.  I think I solved the problem, or at least came up with a work-around.  I manually rebuilt the preferences as folks suggested.  This did not fix the gap problem at all, for my existing document.  But interestingly, it seemed to fix it for any new photos/frames I added.
    After several more hours of troubleshooting, I traced the problem to some graphics on my master page.  My master page has a rectangular border running around the page, composed of four lines, intersecting at the ends.  Most of my photo frames touch at least part of this border.  It seems that this structure was interfering with ID's gap detection algorithm, causing it to get flakey and intermittently miss gaps.  After trying many things I was able to get the gap tool working reasonably reliably by moving the ends of the lines so that they no long touch each other.  Now the border rectangle is four lines which don't form a seamless shape.  This allows it to work around 95% of the time.  Of course, deleting this border fixes it 100% but I need that border (it's on a non-printing layer but I still need it for guide purposes).  This fix works even with my old preferences restored.
    So the lesson is, if you want to use the gap tool on frames, make sure they're not near or touching other graphics like lines or rectangles or the gap tool will act flakey.  As a footnote, fixing this did not solve my other problems like Auto-fit, Alt-drag not copying single pages and the duplicated pages being shifted left and right.  One down, three to go.  Thanks again, folks.

    1. iTunes won't offer cloud downloads for songs that it "thinks" are in your library, even if it "knows" the files are missing. If you've exhaustively searched for the missing files and there is no prospect of repair by restoring to them to their original locations, or connecting to new ones, then delete that tracks that display both the missing exclamation mark and are of media kind Purchased/Protected AAC audio file. Don't hide from iTunes in the cloud when asked, close iTunes, then reopen. You can download from the cloud links or iTunes Store > Quicklinks > Purchased > Music > Not on this computer > All songs > Download all.
    2. Why? Not sure, perhaps 3rd party tools or accidental key presses combined with previously hidden warning messages when trying to organize the library. There is a hint that using the feature to downsample media as it is synced to a device may also be involved, though I've not replicated it. Whatever the reason a backup would protect your media.

    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    *Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

    If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Getting the rawValue of a Drop-Down list on the "change" event

    I am having problems getting the rawValue of a Drop-Down list on the "change" event. It seems that you have to select the same item twice in a row to get the rawValue to be the value of the selected item.

    On the first time a value is selected you get 'null'. The second time the same value is selected, you get the selected value.
    Does anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening? Also, I CANNOT use xfa.event.newText, I need to use the rawValue of the dropdownlist.

    The change event occurs before the rawValue is changed. If you NEED to use the rawValue you'll need to use a later event. Perhaps you could use exit so that it gets triggered when the field loses focus?

    After I exported a PDF to a Word doc and downloaded it, I can't get the pointer tool to work. When I click on the document text, the only tool is the "move" tool. I can't edit or select text. Please advise.

    Operating system:  Windows 8.1
    Steps I am taking: When the PDF file is selected and opened, I clicked on Tools menu on right side of the screen; then I clicked on Select PDF file; then under Convert To, I selected Microsoft Word (*.docx); then I hit the box below that; and clicked Convert. I then see the message that says it is Converting to Export PDF Online. Then I see a link below that, that says Download Converted File. This takes me online to Adobe Acrobat .com, where, I see the command, Export PDF, and see a blue box on the same screen that says Select PDF Files to Export. I click on the thumbnail of the file I want to export. This brings up, online, a screen containing the file I wanted to convert to Word. Then, on the same screen, I click on the icon on the right hand of the screen that says Download. then I click on the box on the bottom the screen that contains the Word document I had wanted to convert. This brings up the Word doc. in Compatibility Mode the latest Word version, which I am unfamiliar with and which has a Picture Tools tab that I cannot escape from and I cannot get any selection tool other that the Move pointer, and I cannot find the Select text pointer to select any text on the page. I don't want this Word version and do not know how to return to the old version of Word that I am familiar with.

    Jpegs can't have transparent areas. Most likely you had layers and were forced to save "as a copy", which means that the image which remains open in PSE is not the jpg. A file saved as a copy makes a copy in the save format, but it's not like save as where you now see the newly saved version instead of the original. The original remains open and unsaved onscreen.

  • PSE9 Can't get the blur tool to work..

    I have a problem with PS elements 9.
    Basically .. In my last package I liked to use the manual blur tool, I see elements has one (a teardrop shaped tool from the bottom left)
    I have selected that blur tool and selected blur at 100% and it pretty much does nothing.
    The other two tools, sharpen and smudge work as expected I just can't get the blur tool to work.
    I want to be able to drag the blur tool across a part of the image and blur it.. but it does nothing!
    If I look at the pixel level then at 100% blur the tool is very slightly blurring the image but only very slightly, I want to be able to paint blurryness across parts of an image and it is not letting me.
    Am I doing something wrong?

    I am used to using a manual blur tool and I like it.
    I can see that the select then filter blur does blur a lot more (as much as I would like) but I don't like the way the selection tool works it always seems to end up with blurs that look unnatural at the edges...
    I suppose I will have to find a way of using it or buy another package.
    Very dissapointed.
