Getting WMP100N Wireless card to acquire network from a WRT54G Wireless Router

Card is version 1.0 and router =Version 6. Have had router for a while (Slaved it off a wired router and used just for laptop connectivity to the wired net.) Have moved and found that wireless connection is more advantageous here. Bought a WMP100N. Installed and ran the setup. It connects to the router with a sterling signal. However, the card can not seem to find or connect with the network. According to the FAQs, it is suggested that my firewall conflicts with the hardware firewall in the router. Well, the router worked fine with Zonealarm when it connected thru a wired Linksys network card. What's different about the wirelesss card and how do I get it to connect? By the way, I was not aware that my router came with an organic firewall. I know that it was NAT configured (which functions as a de facto firewall) but not that it specifically contained a hardware firewall. Also, I still have the wired card installed in the machine. I've disabled it. I have tried just unplugging the cable. I haven' uninstalled it. My firewall ignores the old card when I disable it (As it should.) However, it still doesn't connect with the wireless. I'm afraid to kill Zonealarm and be protected with a supposed firewall that I'm not sure exists.

Try uninstalling & reinstalling the adapter & it will definately work!!

My internet connection is fine when i connect the ethernet cable form the modem to my macbook. But when i plugged in the wireless router, my computer sees it but will not connect to the internet. I lost my installation CD and i tried to re-install using the dowloaded installation but it goes into error saying i can't re-install if i don't change back to default.. anyway, maybe the solution is simple but it eludes me so please help!
    In summary:
    1. same macbook
    2. same wireless router
    3. same internet provider but new connection and modem (since i moved to a different house)

Who is your Internet Service Provider(ISP)?
If you have a cable connection then follow this link and if you have a DSL connection then follow this link to configure your router.

  • Getting new wireless router tomorrow...

So my linksys company is going to be sending me a WRT12N wireless router to replace my WRT54G V6 wireless router. Will the WRT12N work with my macbook pro since the connection timed out 3 times on me. I called linksys cisco and they were more than happy to send one out overnight tonight actually that's why it's arriving tomorrow.
Anyone out there who has WRT12N that runs smoothly with their macbook pro's? Let me know. Thanks.
    - Chris

The WRT120n is an 802.11n standard router so you should get better speeds (only really of benefit for transfers on your local network few have internet connection fast enough to take advantage of the added speed). I would expect the range you get out of the new router to be a little better but similar. I would stray away from the Wi-Fi Protected Setup utilities they have never played nice with Macs.
When you get the router just plug it in and to start plug your mac in via ethernet to get it setup. Log in to what should be 192.168.1.1 login with the username admin and password admin. I would use WPA2 with a pass-phrase you can remember. WIFI is a really a plug and play technology per say their should not be much more configuration then enabling encryption.

  • MacBook Pro can't obtain IP address from Linksys WRT54G v2 router

I believe I am having the issue described in the article below:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304817
In a nutshell, AirPort seems to be seeing the wireless router just fine, but internet connect is a no go.  The router is a Linksys WRT54G v2, which should - SHOULD - work w/ my brand new MBP C2D 17", based on the reports I have seen in other threads here.
In the Network Status tab of the network pref pane, the message is:  "Airport is connected to the network linksys.  Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet."  This is in line with the Apple tech doc cited at the link above.
I am starting a new thread on this because, unlike many of the other folks who are having problems connecting wirelessly, my actual wireless connection seems to be rock solid (AirPort connects to the Linksys instantly, and shows up as full strength with no apparent dropouts).  The problem seems to be with the IP address, as the MBP can't/won't pickup anything other than its self assigned IP when connecting.
Here are the things I have tried so far (most of which are probably irrelevant as it turns out, b/c the actual wireless connection has been fine - just not the TCP/IP stuff):
    1. Updated to latest firmware in router.
    2. Tried switching to different wireless channel (ch. 11 in this case, based on reports in other threads).
    3. In Linksys settings, changed beacon interval to 50 and lowered packet thresholds as described in another post (can't find the link right now).
    4. Formatted and re-installed OSX onto the MBP.  Did NOT use Migration Assistant this time (since others were apparently having problems due to out of date prefs and PowerPC related items copied over from older machines).
    5. Updated to latest version of OSX Tiger (10.4.8 with all patches installed) using a wired Ethernet connection to the internet.
    6. Downloaded and installed the AirPort Update patch 2006-002 located at:
     http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportupdate2006002.html
    7. Repeatedly trashed all AirPort-related keychain items and the SystemPreferences folder in Root/Library/Preferences.
    8. Repeatedly trashed and re-created a new wireless location using Network Assistant.
    9. Salaam thrice towards Cupertino, wave rubber chicken and bathe self in pigs' blood while humming a continuous medley of Mac startup chimes from the last two decades.
    Just kidding about #9, mostly.
I am starting a new thread about this because I believe my issue is OS related.  The AirPort hardware seems to have a a full-strength and non-intermittent connection to the Linksys router.  The problem appears to be w/ the (in)ability of OSX to negotiate an IP lease with the Linksys box.
I am posting this to the Linksys forum as well, but do not believe this to be a Linksys issue.  I have two other PowerPC-based Mac laptops in my office, both of which connect flawlessly to the Linksys.  (I'm typing this from one of them.)  In fact, I have torture tested my new MBP with several other wireless routers with the same result - MBP will not connect, while both of the PowerBooks work like a charm with the other routers in question.  Therefore, it surely seems to me like the common denominator here is definitely the MBP and not the router.  I realize that in the support doc at the top of this post, Apple claims it is the responsibility of the router manufacturer, but I just cannot buy that line - based on the fact that EVERY OTHER LAPTOP that I own works great with the Linksys except for my shiny new MBP.
Beautiful machine otherwise and I really can't wait to get it working, but this is a SERIOUS pain in the you know what.
At any rate, if anyone has any ideas as to what to try next, I would love to hear about it.  I will be calling AppleCare again first thing tomorrow morning, but it always seems the users are better informed than the Apple guys.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

if other computers connect to the router just fine , doesn't seem to me a router problem then .. the only thing i can think is to try connecting to a different network and see whether it does any good to u...can't help much if it's an OS related issue...

  • Getting your wireless router to work with the mini computers and their small monitors

I have one on the new Dell Mini computers.  I purchased the Wireless-G Broadband Router model #WRT54G2 and had the most difficult time getting Network Magic installed on the Mini because the monitor was too small for the required resolution (1024x768) - this was trying to install via the CD that came with the router.
    The solution to this problem:
    1)  Use the CD to install the Router and Network Magic on your desktop (or wherever you are hardwired to the internet).
    2)  Open Network Magic; go to "Status" and download the newest version of Network Magic to your desktop.
    3)  DO NOT use the CD to install Network Magic on the Mini.  Instead - Unplug your hardwire connection from your desktop and connect it to your Mini.  Go to "linksysbycisco.com/us/en/support/WRT54G2/download" and install the newest version of Network Magic on your Mini.
    4)  Replug your hardwire connection into your desktop.
    5)  You can now use Network Magic from your desktop to add the mini to the network.  Go to "Tasks" and then "Add a device."  You will be able to follow the directions at this point.
The only other issue I found was naming the network.  I had to name the desktop and the mini the same name otherwise it wouldn't connect.
Good Luck and hopefully it won't take you the three days it took me to figure this out.

Hi i have a Router WRT 54 G2 v1, when i want to connect it wireless to my new mini, He is asking me to enter a Security key !

  • Use airport express to extend network from linksys wrt54g

Hello all, I'm having no luck here, and hope you can help me. I am running a MacBook Pro, 2.16 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 3 Gigs ram, OS X 10.6.8.I am at work, trying to use a newly purchased AirPort Express to extend the signal from the back office, which has a Linksys WRT54G router. I updated the router's firmware to 1.02.8, build 001, dated 8.5.09. I have tried numerous times to configure the AE using AirPort Utility, and always wind up with an error message, "An error occurred while updating the configuration. Make sure your Apple Wi-Fi base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)" During the configuration process, I am asked what I want to do with AE, I have tried both "create a new wireless network," and "I want AE to join my current network," with no success. Any comments will be appreciated.

The Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS (through version 4 only for both models) were said to be compatible with Apple's WDS settings.
Perhaps this article may offer some clues, but it is doubtful that you will be able to make this work with the particular version of Linksys router that you have.

  • Can't get my wireless router WRT54G to work!

After 4 frustrating days, which included a two hour session with the guys from India, I still cannot get my router to "make the connection."  I have tried everything.  I'm sure it's something "simple."  Help!

You can start by trying these steps for PPPoE... See if it works, if it doesn't...call your ISP and let them set your Modem into bridged mode then follow the same steps..
    PPPoE on DSL Goodluck!
You can also try this online tool that they have that configures routers automatically
CLICK THIS THEN CLICK NETSET ASSISTANT

  • I cant get my wireless router to work

Hi i just bought a new wireless g broadband router which i am trying to use for cable but when i am goin through the setup cd and everything is connect its say that its not connecting to the internet.
Router was unable to connect to the internet. Please turn off/on modem to try and fix problem
    Help anybody?

ok, so you cannot configure the router because it prompts you that you dont have active internet connection right? try first to connect directly your pc to the modem and check if your online.. so if your online, connect again the pc to the #1port of the router and connect the modem to Internet port of the router... then try this one, launch internet browser then type on address bar 192.168.1.1 then leave username blank and type admin on password then press OK. if your on the set up page of the router, go to status and check if you have an IP address... it means that you already have internet connection with the router..

  • What type of wireless router w/new MBP C2D??

I have a new 17" C2D MBP on order and I would like to sort out my wireless home network before it arrives...
As I am new to the wireless world, I do not understand what wireless router would work for this new MBP. I have read about it having 802.11g technology, but I have also seen something about N technology... my local computer shop says that they don't have N technology yet, but will soon.
What is this all about? Is 802.11g G technology? What do I get to have wireless internet access with my new MBP at home?

If you have the MBP C2D and you would like to get a wireless router. I suggest that you get a 802.11n router, as it works for both 802.11b, 802.11g as well as 802.11n. It is common knowledge by now that the wireless card that is used in the MBP with the C2D is an Atheros AR5008 802.11n. Though it is recognized as an 802.11g in the current OSX 10.4, this wireless card has the possibility of being used at its native state of 802.11n. What does this mean to you? Well, the 802.11n is ~ 650% faster than 802.11g and has about 5X the range of it as well. Though 10.4 does not recognize the card as such, windows vista will (that is if you plan on installing it onto the system) and OSX 10.5 might (I don't if Apple, will support draft N [802.11n] of the new wireless standard, even though they put a wireless card in the system that is a Draft N card). So get a wireless router that uses 802.11n. It'll save you money in the future.
Ok, now I'm done explaining why you should get the 802.11n router. Now, as for those who might say otherwise. If you think the 802.11n draft standard is going to change much from now, until the standard is finalized, then you may or may not be right. But from what my professor explained to me about how the technology works, it probably won't change that much. If I were to explain it to anyone on this board about how the standard works, it would be a hopeless matter unless you have taken classes in state variables or control systems. But I guess there are more than enough resources online to find out about how the Draft N standard works. And that is my 2 cents.

  • Do i need a 'wireless router' to share ISP w/ adjacent computers?

How to share my ISP connection with 2 other computers belonging to family in adjacent rooms.
Do I understand correctly that I must getting a 'Wireless router'?
Is that the onlyest &/or bestest way to do so?
And how to insure privacy of all? Do I understand correctly that a wireless router will have instructions and we should each be able to have a separate password and therefore secure separate privacy with no spying.
There's no phone lines in other rooms ( if that has anything to do with it?)
We're not hackers and not computerly sofisticats, obviously or I wouldn't to be axing this Q.
I'm now getting DSL broadband thru my home phone line in the wall hooked up by wire to my DSL modem and then to my MacMini.
I think this is a basic Q, but I've never 'networked' with other computers, and don't know nuthin bout no routers.
    Would appreciate helpful direction.
Oh, and you will be thank ed.

You need a router, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a wireless one. You could run network cables to the other two rooms from a wired router. Most wireless routers also have wired ports, so you can mix the connection types as well. Privacy within your network depends most on if the connected computers have sharing turned on. Beyond that, a wireless network can allow others to see the information you are passing to the router, although it would take time to decode the information and some degree of skill. Some Macs are also not well equipped to perform such snooping, depending on the wireless support they have. If you wish to use wireless to do your internet connection sharing, you will also need to be sure all the systems have wireless capability.

  • WRT54G Wireless Router Problem. Need Help!

I'll start with the basics of my situation and if more details are needed, I will provide to the best of my ability.
I have a comcast cable internet connection.  I have 6 computers in my house. Two of them are downstairs (which is where our modem is.) The other four computers are upstairs.  All of these computers are Desktop computers with the exception of one laptop.
My laptop (which is Windows XP) can pick up a random wireless signal from the room it is in.  I also found out a way to share the internet connection on the computer by going into the properties of my network connection and enabling internet sharing on it.  This means if I connect a network cable from my laptop to another computer, I can leech the connection from my laptop and have internet access on the other computer.  I also  had a switch that I used to connect the other 3 computers upstairs by means of the laptop.  The problem was, the laptop was using someone else's wireless connection in the area, and it wasn't strong enough to keep up a constant connection.
I decided, if I can leech someone else's wireless connection, why not have my own.  So i recently bought WRT54G Wireless Router and set it up on one of the computers downstairs (because that's where the modem is).  It works fine as far as connecting my laptop to the internet from upstairs.  My laptop can access the internet through the connection I set up in the LELA program.
Here is the part I am confused about.  Everything is plugged in correctly as far as the router is concerned because the laptop can access the internet.  But when I connect an ethernet cable directly to one of my other computers (which are Windows Vista, but I didn' t have a problem with it previously when I was leeching someone else's connection), the connection drops on my laptop, and the other computer still can't access the internet.  A notice pops up that says its trying to identify the network, but it gives an error that says there is something wrong with the DNS.  As soon as I disconnect the ethernet cable connecting my laptop to one of the other computers, the connection is fine again on the laptop.  It's only when I connect the computers together that the connection drops.
I just don't understand why it wouldn't work when I created my own network if it worked with another network with no problem.  My whole point in getting a wireless router was to have a router within good range to keep up a constant connection on my other computers that aren't in range of the modem downstairs.  I just don't know where else to look.  I'm not sure if it can be fixed on LELA, manually through my wireless settings, or if it could be a problem with one of my computers' settings.  I've tried many different things and I'm not sure what else to do so any help is most definately appreciated.  I feel like I've tried everything.  I know it's possible because I've one it before, I just need the help because I'm not much of a networking person and I don't know what I should start with to make this work.
Thank you to anyone who can help or even point me in the right direction.

Access router setup page ...Click on the Wireless tab on the Setup page- Here Wireless Network mode should be mixed- Provide any non-linksys name .... Set wireless channel to 11- And wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on "Save Settings" >>Now Click on the Sub tab under wireless > "Wireless Security" Change the Wireless security mode to WEP/WPA ...type in the key & click save settings .... >>>>Click on Advanced Wireless settings>>Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings" Check the connection once again & see if it works or not ...

  • Wireless Router Newbie

I'm going to get a wireless router for my apartment. My roommate and I use a cable modem with two differen IP addresses. She will remained wired while I will go wireless. The router will work like the wired one and I'll be able to use my airport card to connect through my IP, yes? Also, I'm nonethess worried about connecting. Is it difficult to instead connect the wireless router to the wired router in my room and just go wireless that way? Has anyone done it like this that can advise me? Thanks in advance.
Oh, I'm getting the Linksys WRT54G.

Sorry to be confusing. The SSID isn't set at
default. I know because I printed up the summary
    page when done.
Then when you connected to "default", it was someone else's signal, right?
Okay, when I couldn't get online wireless, I plugged
the ethernet connector back in and went online that
way to try the online configuration. That was when I
briefly was able to access it using the browser at
192.168.1.1. This was the IP that was also reflected
in Preferences. But suddenly I lost my connect and
when I checked the IP again, there was a different IP
address. I changed it back manually and while it
insisted I was online, I in fact had no connection.
I think we have some confusion here. At least I'm confused. Are you sure you were using the ethernet interface? Turn the airport off when connecting to the router via ethernet, to me this sounds more like you were using airport, and switched. I assume you're referring to the router address. It would be good to be more specific.
Also, when the Airport somehow went to "default" it
also showed a full signal, but still no access.
Let's first connect to the linksys with ethernet. Using DHCP, there should be nothing to configure. If you can communicate with the linksys, checking its web interface - if you're really connected via ethernet and the connection gets broken, there's a hardware malfunction somewhere, maybe just a cable - and from there you should be able to access the Internet.
After establishing that, it's time to bring up the airport interface. One step at a time.

  • Wireless router recommendations

What wireless routers will work best with my new MacBook? It will be located in the living room and as such will need to reach through walls and such. I know some are going better than others but what things should I be looking for? What must I spend to get a decent router?

    Hi Bowden,
I never had problem with Netgear and Linksys, but some other user have a hard time with some linksys model.
Best bet to get best wireless router will be using apple airport:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=E1B D7358&fnode=home/shopmac/mac_accessories/airportwireless&nplm=MB053LL/A
    or
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=124 87AA8&fnode=home/shopmac/mac_accessories/airportwireless&nplm=M9470LL/A
It will save your time configuring it, and you got both support for router and macbook from the same company.
    Good Luck.

  • Wireless router suggestions?

I wonder what I should do about getting a wireless router for my house. I have NTT B-Flets "Hyper Family" fiber optic here at home in Tokyo, which is a maximum of 1 gigabit/sec up and down speed. Though in reality I am actually under 100 mbit/sec.
Nevertheless, it feels wasteful to get a wireless router that only supports up to the standard 54 mbit/sec, doesn't it?
I read somewhere that the latest MBP, are, to quote:
"Airport Cards being fitted to Mac Pros are marked BCM94321MC - These are Broadcom Intensi-Fi modules which are Draft 802.11N devices."
Though apparently 802.11N drivers aren't available yet. These cards should support up to 200 mbit/sec, right?

    Hi,
I am really reccomending routers of Netgear company. For me they design is like apple and work with apple very well. Simple setup process and top class security. At present I am using this one:
    http://netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/RangeMaxWirelessRoutersandGateway s/DG834PN.aspx
But I am start thinking about n-profile for my MBP. So may choice will be this one:

Full range you can see in here:

    Hope that helps.

  • Confused: Wireless router V's base station

    I have a g5 imac.
I want to make my broadband connection wireless.
I would also like to share my broadbad connection with another mac (which already has an airport extreme card)
My understanding is that I will need to
    1. buy an airport extreme card for my mac (it doesnt have one)
    2. Buy either a wireless router or a base station. (my current broadband connection is USB and my ISP does not supply ethernet modems)
    Firstly.. is this correct?
    secondly, which is better?
    Im just so confused.

Apple's Airport Base Station is a wireless router. They're a little pricey, but have a lot of features and are supposedly easy to set up.
Some features it has that cheaper ones may not:
    Supports 50 connections
USB port (for sharing a printer)
    Built-in 56k modem
    External antenna connector
    Wireless bridging
If you don't need any of those things, then you're probably better off getting a wireless router of another brand.
The Base Station connects via ethernet, so if you need USB, then you'd need another brand, or some kind of adapter. I'd look into getting your internet connection over ethernet though.
