Global Environment Variables?

What is the best way to set global (i.e. for all users of the computer) environment variables under Leopard?
I know that they can be set via ~/.bashrc, ~/.profile or in my case ~/.zshrc files in the terminal on a per user basis.
Also, they can be set for GUI apps as well via ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist on a per user basis.
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPRuntimeConfig/Artic les/EnvironmentVars.html
The path can apparently be set globally by adding files to /etc/paths.d/*
http://blog.plotdevice.org/2008/04/global-path-in-mac-os-x-leopard/
Is there a way to set environment variables globally so that they are accessible to all users and all programs including nonstandard shells like zsh?
My inclination is to set them in /etc/rc.common but that seems like it might be a bad idea. I'd prefer something more like the /etc/paths.d/* solution that only involves adding files, not modifying existing ones. They should be less likely to be overwritten in a system update later.

Thanks for the reminder. It has been reposted here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1513246

  • Accessing Tomcat Global Environment Variables

    Hello,
    I have tried to access Tomcat 5.0 (xx) Global Environment variables.
    I have the Integer simpleValue defined in the Tomcat Administrators panel under "Environment Entries"
    Here's my code:
    Context initContext = new InitialContext();
    Context envContext = (Context)initContext.lookup("java:comp/env");
    Integer i = (Integer)e.get("simpleValue");
    I have also tried and infiinite variation of this with no success (Accessing the Initialcontext directly)
    The Tomcat docs at: http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-5.0-doc/jndi-resources-howto.html
    says:
    "<Environment> - Configure names and values for scalar environment entries that will be exposed to the web application through the JNDI InitialContext (equivalent to the inclusion of an <env-entry> element in the web application deployment "
    PLEASE HELP !!!

    They may be less likely to be overwritten than you fear. A lot of things depend on modifications to the system scripts like /etc/profile. Although I'd expect these to be broken by an upgrade to Leopard, for example, they have survived all Tiger upgrades on my machine. You could always have them source scripts in /usr/local, say, so that the work involved in reconfiguring them if they are overwritten is minimal. (Or you could just install your versions in /usr/local and make the system scripts symlinks to those versions - if anything is overwritten, it would be the symlink rather than the file itself. An automated start up script could even check and recreate the symlink if necessary.)

  • R12, Environment Variables on Windows, and OBIEE

    Dear Experts,
    I've managed to install R12 on Windows.
    Now, in the global environment variable, Path, the user Oracle has a number of directories in its default PATH, starting with the Oracle apps middle tier.
    C:\oapps\apps\tech_st\10.1.2\bin;
    C:\oapps\apps\tech_st\10.1.2\jdk\jre\bin\classic;
    C:\oapps\apps\tech_st\10.1.2\jdk\jre\bin;
    C:\oapps\apps\tech_st\10.1.2\jlib;
    C:\oapps\apps\tech_st\10.1.3\bin;
    C:\oapps\db\tech_st\11.1.0\bin;
    C:\Windows\system32;
    C:\Windows;
    I notice that there are .cmd scripts that set the Path.
    This script sets the path to look in: c:\oapps\db
    cd C:\oapps\db\tech_st\11.1.0
    VIS_black.cmd
    echo %PATH%
    C:\oapps\db\tech_st\11.1.0\perl\5.8.3\bin\MSWin32-x86-multithread\;
    C:\oapps\db\tech_st\11.1.0\bin;
    This script sets the path to look in: c:\oapps\apps
    set PATH=""
    cd c:\oapps\apps\apps_st\appl
    VIS_black.cmd
    echo %PATH%
    C:\oapps\apps\apps_st\appl\au\12.0.0\bin;
    I'd like to install OBIEE on the same server. Obviously, I don't want any path conflicts. And, OBIEE uses a different version of java.
    1)
    Do all these Apps directories need to remain in the global PATH environment variable? Or, can the directories be removed from the path, and the scripts can be relied on to set the appropriate variables?
    Thanks a lot!

    if you want global settings (always present, even after reboot), you have to edit the autoexec.bat file, e..g
    SET CLASSPATH=c:\myclasses
    you can set environment variables temporarility in a DOS shell using the same command.
    if possible, you should avoid the CLASSPATH environment variable, and use the -cp or -classpath option for java and javac. This helps a lot to solve classpath confusions.

  • RCP, Environment Variables, OS X, Info.plist and LSEnvironment

    I've got a somewhat challenging problem here.
    I've got an RCP application that relies upon some shared dynamic libraries which might not be in standard locations (as this is OS X and they are user installed).
    One of the things we need to configure is DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH in order for the shared libraries be discovered. The problem here is OS X doesn't have a simple way to set environment variables that applications launched from the Finder can "see".
    One of the thing that I've found, but not had any success with, is to dynamically modify the RCP's Info.plist to have an additional key LSEnvironment whose value is a dictionary to set environment variables only visible to that application - okay this seems ideal for me. But it's not working.
    I also found that I could use launchctl setenv to set a user global Environment variable, however it's not persistent across launches, and each time I set, I must restart the app. I really need this persistent.
    Does anyone have any solution for setting Environment variables that are visible from the RCP app (and it's children) that works in OS X without having to launch the RCP app from a terminal?
    Thanks in advance!

    Brian de Alwis wrote on Wed, 05 August 2015 19:54Sounds like you want to use System.loadLibrary() with absolute paths?
    That doesn't quite work, as we aren't using JNI. Unfortunately the use-case details get pretty complicated - so I omitted in an effort to make it simpler to understand the problem.
    Basically we have built an IDE that uses the Prolog interpreter, XSB. XSB natively connects to MySQL using the shared MySQL libs. Unfortunately on OS X, MySQL can get installed into possibly one of many locations, and it certainly doesn't install it's libs in /usr/local/lib or /usr/lib. We access XSB via a Java library called Interprolog, which I believe, is just a pipe interface to the command line shell - hence when the Interprolog engine object is instantiated, it fires up a shell process for XSB - which needs to locate those MySQL libraries. Hence, DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH needs to be set to have the path for /usr/local/mysql/lib (or wherever the user installed it) defined in the parent process in order for Interprolog's sub-process to pick up the environment variable.
    Right now there are only 2 reliables ways I have found to get this to work.
    1. Launch Terminal, export the environment variable. Then launch our RCP app from the Terminal. - cumbersome and unintuitive; bad user experience.
    2. Launch Terminal, use `launchctl setenv DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/local/mysql/lib`. And then one can lacuna our RCP app using Finder. - problem is that DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH is now global to the environment and will not persist between reboots.
    I've tried added the LSEnvironment dictionary to the Info.plist within the RCP application, but that just doesn't seem to work - and I'm not sure if that is because the OS X eclipse launcher doesn't propagate the environment forward or what. For the time being I have a way for the user to click a button which runs launchctl setenv and then prompts the user to exit the app, and then launch again from finder [IWorkbench.restart() doesn't work because new process is a child of the current] - which works but is undesirable workflow as it doesn't persist across a login/reboot.
    My next step is to try what is outlined here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/829749/launch-mac-eclipse-with-environment-variables-set
    However it feels even more sketchy than just modifying the Info.plist to contain the right environment variables.

    Without using environment variable everything works fine . (i.e when I give SDK's dir path like ../../  i.e relative to my project)

    There is workaround : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12629395/weblogic-using-environment-variable-double-quotes-in-arguments-in-server
    Just posting here for reference. Let's see if we get a different answer from anyone else.

  • Changing environment variables not reflected in axis2.

    Hi,
    I am using axis2(1.2).And my problem is that I am trying to call two or more webservice from the same host .Let me explain.I have a web page .Its take some info to serach and also the parameter to which service to call.Suppose there are two service running (A and B).For A, need the following environment to set before calling :
    System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStore",keyStore);
    System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStorePassword", keyPwd);
    System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.keyStoreType",keyType);
    System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStoreType",trustType);
    System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStore",trustStore);
    System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStorePassword",trustPwd);And for B do not required any environment variable.
    When I try to connect the B(clear all the environment) after accessing the A its throw the following exception :
    org.apache.axis2.AxisFault: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException:
    PKIX path building failed:
    sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find
    valid certification path to requested targetBut if I restart the webserver and try to call B its working but if I try to access A its failed.
    So its seem to me that once the environment is set its not possible to reset it.
    So is there any solution.
    Thanks & Regrads

    i haven't used axis2 specifically, but i would imagine that it provides a way to configure that connection information for a specific webservice connection (as opposed to globally for the jvm). a quick google for "axis 2 custom keystore" found this link: http://shivendra-tripathi.blogspot.com/2010/11/enabling-ssl-for-axis2-service-and.html which shows how to configured an axis2 client with a custom keystore ("Approach 2", at the very end of the article). actually, looking again at that article, it may be configuring a system-wide setting (the Protocol.registerProtocol() call looks to be static). this looks better: http://wso2.org/library/1646 .

  • Gcc seems not to be recognising environment variables for include and lib.

    I'm trying to install programs into a non standard location, but GCC does not seem to be checking the paths defined in global profile. All 3rd party dependencies are not found and only the default locations are checked.
    The environment variables defined in profile are:
    CPLUSINCLUDEPATH="/DVL/include:/GNU/include:/usr/X11/include:/TEST/include"
    DYLDLIBRARYPATH="/DVL/lib":/GNU/lib:/usr/x11/lib"
    LIBRARY_PATH="/dvl/lib:/gnu/lib:/TEST/lib"
    As GCC is a proven technology, I can only assume that my variables are incorrect or something is missing. Has anyone else experienced this or is your configuration recognising non-standard locations?

    sorry, wrong forum. I put this topic again in forum "portal applications"

  • Global Constants / Variable in OSB

    I want to define global Constants / Variable in OSB and I want to access them in XSLT when I am tranforming the requests...
    Any idea how can I do that?
    I want to use these variables and constants for server name and ports (in different environment) and some other stuff.

    We have done a similar implementation for the same scenario. We have created a Xquery where we put in the configuration information as an XML and then in the pipeline stages we use the Assign the Xquery to a a temporary variable and then use the values of the xml using relative xpath expressions.
    This way any time we need to make any changes to the confguration we know once place we can change and it gets reflected in the complete code base.
    Below is how we have done it:
    - create a Xquery with xml configurations (say commonconfig.xq)
    - then using the Assign action get the output of this xquery into a temp var (say commonConfig)
    - then use the configurable values using the relative xpath in the Assign action (say Assign $commonConfig/param1/text() to param1Value
    Let me know if you need further information.
    Thanks,
    Patrick

  • Within JBuilder, Reading Environment Variable From a BATCH File

    Hi ppl:
    Following my scenario without JBuilder. I would like to be able to do the same with JBuilder, so that I can run my application from within.
    1. In the DOS window, I run a config.bat file that sets up a whole bunch of environment variables and then calls another script file that sets up another whole bunch to set up environment for a third party API (C++ based).
    2. My application uses native methods to call the third party API which uses the environment variables set in step 1.
    I know how to set the environment varialbes in JBuilder (Project Parameters, VM). However, I don't know how I can call a batch file that does the same. I don't want to set up the third party variables in JBuilder manually, since the script that sets them up checks on a few things to customize the environment.
    I also know how to run a batch file from JBuilder, but that does not set the environment for the application. It seems like the batch file is run in a separate process.
    Any ideas?
    Kamran

    It seems like the batch file is run in a separate process.Yes, it is. That's a design feature of Windows. The environment variables that a process creates are available to any subprocess, but when the process ends, the environment variables vanish. That's because they are part of the process, not global variables as you might wish.
    So that's why your non-JBuilder scenario works; your C++ program is running in a subprocess of the process that defined the environment variables. And your JBuilder scenario doesn't work because the batch file it runs is in a process whose parent process is Windows, not JBuilder.

  • Setting new environment variable on Linux

    {noformat}I need to set new environment variable on my linux machine from inside my code. I am using csh and the command works fine from command line:
    setenv IFConfigLocation4 /home/username/myfile.xml
    But when i try the same thing from Java code it does not seem to have any effect. here is my code:
    import java.util.*;
    import java.io.*;

    public static String fileParse(String inFile, String parserName, String outFile, String CMConfig_locale)

    System.out.println("Parsing file..." + "\nParser name: " + parserName +"\nInput file name: " + inFile + "\nOutput file name: " + outFile + "\nCMConfig file is: " + CMConfig_locale);
    System.out.println("Current Java version: " + System.getProperty("java.version"));
    try
              String cmd[]={"/bin/csh", "-c", "setenv IFConfigLocation4 " + CMConfig_locale};
              Process proc = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
              int exitVal= proc.waitFor();
              System.out.println("Value of setenv command is: " + exitVal);
              String cmd2[]={"/bin/csh", "-c", "env"};
              Process proc2 = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd2);
              InputStream instr = proc2.getInputStream();
              InputStreamReader inread = new InputStreamReader(instr);
              BufferedReader buf = new BufferedReader(inread);
              String line=null;
              while((line=buf.readLine()) != null)
                   System.out.println(line);
              int exitVal2= proc2.waitFor();
              }catch(CMException cme){
                   System.out.println("Issue when trying to executing parse command, details: " + cme.getMessage());
                   System.out.println("Description of the issue is: " + cme.getDescription());
                   parsed = "FAILURE: " + cme.getDescription();
              }catch(Exception e){
                   System.out.println("Uncought exception, details: " + e.getMessage());
                   parsed = "FAILURE: " + e.getMessage();
         return parsed;
    public static void main(String[] args) {
         String results=CDE_parser_methods.fileParse("/opt/itemfield/ServiceDB/Project2/Mapping_for_Account_Number_Structure_ITS_Input_File.xls","MappingforAccountNumberStructure","/opt/itemfield/ServiceDB/Project2/test_ws_44.xml","/home/rvenishe/CMConfig.xml");
         System.out.println("Result of fileParse call is: " + results);
         }The out put of my env command does NOT contain system variable "IFConfigLocation4". Any ideas? {noformat}

    Environment variables and their values set from within a user process has their scope and lifetime limited to the process and its subprocesses. See java.lang.ProcessBuilder class and its API documentation for setting env for a subprocess that will be started by a ProcessBuilder instance. Even in the C programming we have the same limitation for the environment.
    Since they are not globally set, system command like env or Java method like System.getenv() can't see them.

  • CLASSPATH environment variable - Pro/cons?

    I was told that its not a good idea to define CLASSPATH as a system environment variable, but was never told why. Is it correct that it should be avoided to define CLASSPATH as a system variable?
    Another thing when should a variable be defined as a system variable or an user variable?

    fedevaps wrote:
    I was told that its not a good idea to define CLASSPATH as a system environment variable, but was never told why. Is it correct that it should be avoided to define CLASSPATH as a system variable?For one thing, it means you have no control over classpaths. Say you write two apps, and they each use a different version of the same library. If you're using the one global classpath for both of them, you're stuffed. How do you allow them both to use the correct version? Then you come to deploy one of them on someone else's machine, and, say, send them a CD with it on."Right, what jars does it use again? I dunno. It always just worked, cos I've got all my dependencies in one place, and the VM picks up the lot. Goddammit. I'll have to put all of them on his machine, too .AND set up his classpath. What? There are 500 machines to roll out to? And some of them don't even +have+ that folder? Goddammit! ". See the problem? If you explicitly dictate a classpath when starting up the JVM, it can be wherever you want - typically a lib folder within that specific app - and have exactly what you need on it. Much more flexible and easier to control
    Another thing when should a variable be defined as a system variable or an user variable?I hope you're just asking cos you're already here, and not because you think this is related to Java. Cos it isn't. System variables are available to, well, all the users of the machine, including any local accounts that services might be running under. A user variable is specific to the user it's defined for, and not visible to any others. When you use which depends very much on what the variable is for

  • Different Environment Variable in OS and Solman

    Hi dear experts,
    I have a weird question here. I set the environment variable in the OS as blew:

    /usr/sap/SMP/DVEBMGS00/exe:/sybase/SMP/ASE-15_0/jobscheduler/bin:/sybase/SMP/ASE-15_0/bin:/sybase/SMP/ASE-15_0/install:/sybase/SMP/DBISQL/bin:/sybase/SMP/OCS-15_0/bin:/usr/sap/SMP/DVEBMGS00/exe/sapjvm_4/bin:/home/smpadm/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/u
    It's same as what I found in program by debugging. And that's the reason why I failed to install MaxDB.
    I have restarted solman, but the issue persisted. Can you give me any advices? Thank you.

    Pany Pan

  • X11 environment variables on MacBook Pro

    Hi
    I have just got my new MacBook Pro and have installed Gimp to run using x11 that came on the apple installation disks however I can't seem to get the xterm to configure correctly.
    GIMP is installed under /sw/bin but the default PATH for x11 does not include this location so I added PATH=$PATH:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin to a newly created .bash_profile. But x11 did not seem to use this file although terminal worked OK.
    After doing a bit of research, I then created a .bashrc file with the PATH defined and changed the .bash_profile to source .bashrc with no other entries.
    Again this worked OK for Terminal but now when I type 'echo $Path' in an x11 xterm the PATH displays two entries for /sw/bin & /sw/sbin. i.e.
    $ echo $PATH
    /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/sw/bin:/sw/sbin
    Any ideas why? and how can I correct it?
    Macbook Pro 17   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Sorry this was a bit brief; I think I was still asleep when I typed it.
    The reasons are these:
    1. Many fink programs require environment variables and other settings. When you source that init.sh file, it ensures everything is set up to work out of the box. (Among the things it does is to in turn source every relevant file in /sw/etc/profile.d -- take a look in it to see what, if anything, is in there). There is also some code to keep your path trimmed properly, so you don't get repeats pasted on.
    2. Bash is unique in that either .bashrc or .bash_profile, but not both, get sourced. In a rooted X11 environment, everything works properly, but on OS X, where X11 is "rootless," it leads to unexpected behavior like what you saw. As long as you put everything into one file and then tell the other one to source its contents, you should be ok.
    You can also run X11 stuff from Apple's terminal, provided you somewhere in a startup file have something to set the DISPLAY variable, usually to .0.
    I've put more discussion of these things here
