Gnome 3.4 Missing Desktop Icons

I've got the latest version of gnome 3.4 installed along with gnome-tweak-tool. In gnome-tweak-tool I've got Have the file manager handle the desktop set to on. However, when I log out and log back in again there are no icons until I fire up nautilus manually at which point it draws the desktop icons. How can I make it so that the icons are there when I log into gnome without having to fire up nautilus manually first please? Many thanks in advance.

I'm not really at home in Gnome 3, but here's my two cents:
Open dconf-editor (Alt+F2 and enter 'dconf-editor') and be sure 'org > gnome > desktop > background > show-desktop-icons' is checked...
If not, do so and restart the shell...
If it is already checked, I'm kinda out of inspiration...

  • Missing desktop  icons

On turning on my MBP today I notice all the desktop icons were missing including the H/D icon.
The menu bar still displays correctly and the screen is correct.
How can I get back my desktop icons?
I've tried preferences, restarting, looking to see if this has occurred before on these forums without any luck.
I can still use my finder for apps etc. but none will appear on the desktop. not even using Aliases.
Any one out there who can offer advise?

Updated Tinkertool and in doing so must have checked the "disable desktop feature"
    All is now OK

Did you ever figure this one out?
I have seen two external Seagate drives (FW, 500GB) stop mounting after about one use on a mac. Neither of them would show up under windows XP or 2000 afterwards.
I reformatted one, and am wondering if I'll need to do the same thing to the other.

  • Missing Desktop Icon when Hiding Dock

    Hello
Has anyone experienced the HD icon on the desktop going missing when hiding the dock?
I’ve noticed that when I hide the dock for some reason my ‘System HD’ disappears. It doesn’t return when unhiding the dock either. However if I then go and arrange by Kind it reappears. I can still see the drive using Finder.
I am running the current version of OSX.

    Any thoughts, anyone?

Have you tried a bit of basic maintenance?
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:

By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • "Show Desktop" icon in Gnome Disappears

    Hello All,
I have GNOME (installed from the repos).  Once every few logins (it seems pretty random) the "show desktop" icon (usually in the lefthand corner) is missing.
If I try and add it again, the new icon actually appears directly to the right of the original. If I logout or reboot, the original icon re-appears.
I have found nothing online relating to this problem, nothing in the forums (one post mentioned it, so I commented, but never got a reply).
I've actually had this issue in another distro since before I started using arch --- Fedora to be precise.  However, I've yet to see it in ubuntu, debian or slackware (and I use ubuntu at work every day, on multiple machines).
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Gnome 3.16 & Wayland: double-click no worky and no desktop icons/menu

I understand Wayland and Gnome are getting closer to "finished", and indeed my laptop's touchpad (HP Folio 13) now detects taps as primary mouse clicks, which is a marked improvement over 3.14, where taps weren't detected at all. Couple of issues stop it being "daily use" for me at present however:
    1) Despite "Test your settings" correctly showing "double-click primary button", the double-click isn't working as it should in Nautilus/Files i.e. double clicking or double tapping on a folder icon fails to open said folder. Interestingly double-click to drag *does* work, so I'm suspecting a Nautilus problem. NB double click with a proper mouse also doesn't work, so it's not a trackpad problem per se.
    2) Second problem is that my desktop icons (Home and a couple of folders) aren't showing up, despite using gnome-tweak-tool to set the desktop icons "On". And when I right-click on the gnome-wayland desktop the context menu only shows "Change Desktop Background" and "Settings...".
Both of these probems aren't present on Gnome under X.

I can confirm both of these on my own Gnome 3.16 desktop as well. The no desktop icons I believe is a known thing with Gnome on Wayland (it doesn't exist, just like restarting Gnome Shell with Alt+F2 and r does not exist under Wayland either). The first issue I have never seen anywhere, and it does not seem limited to touchpads (hook up a mouse and you will see the same thing). Anyone experienced the lack of double click for folders in Nautilus/Files under Wayland? Any solutions?

  • Gnome 3.6 - Desktop Icons on Secondary TwinView Screen?

    Hi,
I have dual monitors using Nvidia twinview and in previous Gnome iterations nothing has prevented 'free dragging' of desktop icons to anywhere, on any screen. However in 3.6.2 they seem to be locked to the primary monitor only. Does anyone know if this is configurable, a bug, or yet further reduced usability?
    Many thanks

wilson wrote:I had to remove .config/dconf/user twice to get rid of the black text. The first time, after reststarting with Alt-F2 'r', the desktop was mostly reset, but the icons were all still there, and running gnome-tweak-tool "Have file manager manage the desktop" was set to False, and setting it to True did nothing. I removed the file again, logged out, then logged in, and then the icon's were gone, and setting "Have file manager manage the desktop" properly put white text under the icons.
Very interesting.  I did all that you suggested - and in the end - the icon text was still black.  However - I got to playing around and discovered the source of the problem.
It is the GTK+ Theme.  If it is set to any GTK+ theme other than the default 'Adwaita' - the icon text is always black.  However, it works correctly - white - with Adwaita.
So - I surmise that something changed in how Gnome 3.2 uses GTK+ - or something in GTK+ itself.  Perhaps Wonder may have some perspective on this ... I hope.

  • OS X 10.4.11 install or removal help - Desktop icons missing

I'm really frustrated by this upgrade install.
Did the automated version of upgrade 10.4.10 to 10.4.11, it took forever but finally completed. Automatic reboot, took forever. When it finally came back, all the desktop icons are missing. I can see them in a Finder window. I dloaded and installed the 10.4.11 combo for PPC at nearly 3 time the size (180 MB vs ~ 49MB), auto reboot and still the same thing, no desktop icons.
Much thank in advance for direction to fix or to revert back to the 10.4.10.
    Cheers,

press the menu key once more, do you have "show all" as an option? Select it.

I just installed Lightroom 5. It will not open. I have clicked on the desktop icon as well as the start menu button with no results. What am I missing?

I had the same problem, and I believe it is caused by having the Creative Cloud application doing the updating of LR.  I "fixed" the problem by:
    1. Uninstall Lightroom
    2. Download the stand-alone LR 5.6 installer from Product updates
    3. Install LR 5.6 using the stand-alone installer, instead of using the Creative Cloud application.
