Gnome crashes on login

Hi,
my laptop is running on Arch with kernel 3.11.2-1 and I use the current gnome version as desktop environment.
To look closer to an image position of a website i'm currently creating I used the desktop-zoom function provided by gnome. After like 5 seconds gnome crashed and displayed the message: "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. All extensions have been disabled as a precaution." and a logout-button. So i logged out, rebootet my laptop and hoped it would help, but sadly it didn't. So each time I try to log in now I get this message.
So I looked throw dmesg and found this:
systemd-joufnald[121]: Failed to write entry(26 items, 228856444 bytes) despite vaccuming, ignoring: Argument list too long
traps: gnome-shell[1661]: trap int3 ip:7f4fccd6fd3d sp;7fff6ca4ab00 error:0
systemd-journald[121]: Vaccumin done, freed 0 bytes
systemd-journald[121]: Failed to write entry(26 items, 254325372 bytes) despite vaccuming, ignoring: Argument list too long
traps: gnome-shell[1661]: trap int3 ip:7ffaa0780d3d sp:7fff613a1af0 error: 0
I searched the web a bit but couldn't find anything helpfull so far.
Anyone has an idea how to fix this?
Greetings
Dero

Update.
The crashes are to be expected now. I'm circumventing the whole thing by logging into my other Gnome session without a window manager, logging out and then logging back into my regular Gnome with Metacity.
I've noticed the tty1 sessions(not sure what's it's called) is strange. Apparently my session runs on tty8 but when I try logging in, it'll crash me and tty7 gives me a blank screen with a blinking underscore. The other tty1s work regularly. Not sure if this has anything to do with it.
Is there a way to just reset the Gnome settings?

Extra Notes: I have another desktop session with awesome installed(uninstalled now) and could log into that no problem. Awesome was giving me troubles so I uninstalled it. I have 2 gnome desktop sessions, my regular gnome session(the one that crashes), and the other with no window manager(never crashed on startup).
I installed awesome around the same time as configuring the dual monitor setup.

  • [SOLVED] GDM / GNOME crashes on login screen after standby

Brand new Arch installation on a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 10. Most of the stuff works out of the box (except touchscreen https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1478128).
Using plain vanilla GNOME + GDM things seem ok, but once every few times upon returning from standby the login screen crashes and just freezes on the password screen. Nothing can be done (except for jumping to another vt) and a reboot is required.
If I SSH into the machine during this period, nothing suspicious shows up on journalctl.
    Any ideas what's going on?

Since I'm also getting some random freezes even when not in the login screen, I'm now suspecting a graphics driver problem.
Now testing UXA mode, per the Intel Graphics wiki page, hoping it will solve the freezes.
EDIT: UXA mode seems to have fixed the problem.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME crashes (probably after full update)

    Hi all,
Today I did a full update with "pacman -Syu" and thus, some new packages were updated. However, after the update and reboot (by myself, not requested by the system as I saw that the kernel is updated - to 2.6.32.19 - as well) then GNOME crashes everytime I do "startx" (I don't use any login manager like GDM or SLiM), neither "xinit" nor "xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session" works too.
The problem is that I still see the mouse cursor and sometimes, the wallpaper as well, then GNOME crashed and I was returned to the command line with lots of messages about gnome-panel disconnected from the bus, several messages about gnome-session and /usr/lib/libdevkit, /usr/lib/libdbus, gnome-screensaver etc.
Sorry for didn't provide enough details, but the laptop with Arch64 on it isn't here with me at the moment so I just recall and describe the errors here.
Please give me your advice about this case
    Thank you
EDIT: Fyi, I checked the wiki about GNOME here, but I couldn't find any "session" in ~/.gnome2/ in order to "mv ~/.gnome2/session ~/.gnome2/session.old" to refresh the session.
I also did "for d in .gnome* .gconf*; do mv "$d" "$d.old"; done" already, but problem still persists

Thanks wonder, another "pacman -Syu" showed that it updated dbus to 1.2.24 and after a reboot, GNOME is up and running again
    Cheers

  • [SOLVED] Gnome crashes at startup

I have been using MATE for a while, but wanted to check out if the new (3.12) gnome became usable.
Sadly, just after login gnome crashes: "something went wrong" message and a sad "face" is displayed. But absolutely no debug information is shown.
I have looked into ~/.xsession-errors but it is empty.
There is also nothing interesting in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
I have removed gnome-shell-extensions and user extensions, and then even created a "fresh" user.  But none of these helped.

I guess it is not dbus or bluez issue. Seems more like gtk2/gtk3 issue (I have both installed), so I tried to run gdm instead of lxdm (just in case lxdm loads gtk2), but gdm shows just a black screen.
    #### UPDATE:
The Error: Requiring NMGtk, version none: Requiring namespace 'Gtk' version '2.0', but '3.0' is already loaded
was from NetworkManager (I just guessed what NMGtk could mean)
I had NetworkManager installed and NetworkManager-applet. But the latter was a gtk2 version (from AUR) and Gnome apparently tried to execute it instead of just ignoring it.

I found out that this error occurs only under Gnome (for me). I can start anjuta in fluxbox. So I made a bug report.
It seems that anjuta 2.0 will come out soon. A beta version should be released in the next few days (according to this: http://www.anjuta.org/wiki/index.php/Anjuta2).

From what i understand i see that - Cookies are not transferred between your website and your webapp when installing the icon on the home screen (for authentication purposes for example). It was working until 6.1 and now it’s not working anymore.
Can someone please tell me if this bug will be fixed in any future release, if so the ticket number of some kind that i can track, or if there is a workaround for this issue?

  • Various process crashes prevent login to main user account

Here's a good one. I can't log in to my main user account; here's the recap:
Computer was acting slow and pausing a lot over past couple of weeks; I put it down to internet slowness at first, but after awhile I began closing down less-critical processes like .mac synchronization, mySQL, etc. Can't recall running any new installs recently, or updates, except perhaps Firefox.
Checked the logs, saw that my old pal mdimport was crashing repeatedly, like every 15 seconds or so. That will slow things down! So I turned off the Spotlight indexing for all categories, and eventually made the hard disk a private item. mdimport still crashing.
Ran permissions repair; some problems fixed, nothing too alarming in the logs (I think). Verified the hard disk; no problems found.
At some point the main account became unable to log me in. The login window accepts a password and disappears, but after a little while a blue screen appears, and the login window returns. I am able to log in using a secondary more-or-less virgin account on this machine, which seems to work fine.
Console logs reveal the constantly crashing mdimport, triggered anytime I attempt to log in using the main account. Secondarily, the loginwindow process is crashing on login (main account only) and crashdump itself is consistently crashing just afterwards. Occasionally another process called lsregister will crash at the login attempt, sometimes other processes too. More worryingly, there are reported IO errors from the kernel.
I've reset the pram, I've reset the nvram. I've booted from a 10.5 system disk and re-run disk utility for permissions and repair disk. I tried safe mode.
I've attempted to rsync my main user account to another computer while booted to target disk mode; rsync (running on the remote machine to which I'm copying the files) copies the many gigabytes in my Documents folder, but chokes consistently at some files in my Library ("former iDisk.dmg", App Support/firefox/profiles/etc, also some Growl files) with "Input/output error (5)."
Anyone have any good theories? Many thanks in advance.
    --David H

Thanks for your reply; I checked out the links but nothing seems too directly related. I'm vaguely aware of what mdimport does, but I certainly have seen it crash a lot.
At this point, I'm finally able to log back in to my main account, which (with some caveats/questions below) seems to be working.
To get back to this point, I used the terminal utility Applejack to clear caches, check plists for corruption, and clear virtual memory. I also manually deleted a loginwindow plist and some Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices/ files. Something in there seemed to help, and I'm finally back in to the main user account. There was definitely no getting into this account before I tried these steps.
    Applejack is found at http://applejack.sourceforge.net/.
I still have some troubling log entries, and some blips in several files. While subsequently backing up my user account, rsync consistently tripped on several files in /Library/Application Support relating to Firefox and Growl, in /Library/iCal, and also a couple of image files (out of tens of thousands) in my Pictures folder. So I deleted these files; the only concern so far is the iCal file which was called "corestorage.ics." And now that I've started iCal, it looks like I still have data; but my console log shows about 70 lines of "Calendaring data empty." Ugh. Nothing like losing data but not knowing what was lost.
Also troubling in the system log: I have several entries of "kernel[0]: disk0s3: I/O error" (though not in the latest reboot cycle). Hard to tell if these belong in the same category as the many cryptic and possibly alarming messages seen there, or if this is a real warning of a failing hard disk, or of other corrupt files the system is running into. Again, disk utility has repeatedly found no problems.
(Also I have several hundred entries of "/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Metada ta.framework/Versions/A/Support/mdimportserver: _TIFFVSetField: tiff data provider: Invalid tag "Copyright" (not supported by codec)", which I hope relate to mdimport seeing many jpg images that have copyright metadata. I'm hoping that problem will go away now that they're marked "private" as far as Spotlight is concerned.)
At least I'm back in the account. I'm trying to decide whether to archive & install system 10.5; I'd prefer to reformat a misbehaving disk, but then you gotta have pretty serious confidence in your backups. Alternatively if the rumors are true I'm hanging on for one of the new laptops; I'd prefer that to replacing the hard drive again in this diabolical case. (Price you pay for sleek, I guess.)
    Time will tell.

  • Gnome crashes in activities overview

Hi guys, I'm new to Gnome 3 and Gnome in general, and I noticed this today:
When I press superkey, I get the activities overview, but if I try to move windows with my mouse
(in a new workspace or just move it around), Gnome crashes, turning all of my extension off.
I usually use shortcuts for this, so I haven't noticed it before, but I know it worked when I installed it (two weeks ago).
Can someone help me with this?

Check ~/.xsession-errors for clues (or post it here).
Did it start failing after an update?

Now, if I uninstall alsa-lib, look at the output:
    [vot@Arch ~]$ skype
    Yes, it works!
Any ideas? I tried setting myself to busy and disabling sound notifications, but it didn't work.

Errors in these entries may cause poor network performance and/or certain programs to open very slowly, or not work at all.
Edit: If it still doesn't work, I'm bailing out on this one. Sorry. Skype was bought by Microsoft and I stopped using it.
Maybe check out the Skype wiki page?

    musuhead,
which model MacBook Pro do you have? Did you install Mac OS X 10.6.8 onto it from the white retail Snow Leopard DVD, or from the model-specific grey Mac OS X Install DVD?

  • Crash on login 7.4.0.102 / Win7

Yesterday Skype appeared to be working just fine.  This morning after an OS update the version of skype that I had (at least 7.3.0.101 or later).
I crashed on login 3 times.
Came to the forums to look up information.
    Updated to the latest version.
As soon as I logged in everything seemed normal.  I initiated a call and the call screen was just a black window.  The call connected with no other audio cues that the program was even working.  I had the other end disconnect the call.  The window was not resposive resulting in a skype crash when I went to close it.
Now as soon as I try to login, it starts to load the friendlist and then crashes.
I've included the DxDiag specs and the Event Viewer Entires for the latest crash.  I can go back and retrieve them all but at this point I've had somewhere in the ballpark of 8 or 9 crash events as I try different workarounds.

Unsure of what actually fixed the issue.
Two more system restarts and now Skype is working again.

  • GNOM crashes everytime

But now GNOME crashes everytime I start it using startx, it says:
Oh no! something has gone wrong. A problem has occured and the system can't recover. Please logout and try again
During installation pacman was reporting: (gconftool-2:5491): GConf-WARNING **: Client failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon . Installation went fine otherwise. Other Window Managers work fine, using Ratpoison to post this.

  • MyPad crashes at login on IPad2

MyPad crashes at login.   How do I fix it?

    Hi,
I had the same problem. I looked at the mypad developer support via the web, and one reply said to delete and reinstall the app. This seems to have fixed it for me.
    Kind regards and good luck.

  • Gnome Crash - Log?

Hi, i've just reinstalled arch on my EeePC 701 and for my gf i've installed gnome as my default DE.
I've only a issue: sometimes, when i press the "return" key, gnome crash.
I have no idea about the cause of this problem so i would like to "log" it.
So, that's my question: could i create a log file for the gnome session?
    Thanks

I have the same problem here. Most of the time, X crashes when I press the "return" key in the terminal. The only error message I found is the following:
Aug 10 06:48:39 mithril gnome-session[1765]: WARNING: Detected that screensaver has left the bus
    Aug 10 06:48:39 mithril gdm-binary[1611]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
