Gnome looks 4:3 on a my wide screen [SOLVED]

Hello!
I just installed Arch on my small Samsung Q45 notebook (with wide screen), and I'm having this curious problem with Gnome: even though X seems to stard at the correct resolution of 1280x800, Gnome panels do not fill up the full space.
An image is worth a thousand words so here we go:
http://www.italpro.net/images/gnome-strange.jpg
As you can see, the area at the right or at the bottom is perfectly usable, as I can move icons and windows there. However, the panels don't expand to fill it. This is probably due to a thing you can see in the screen resolution preferences dialog in the upper-right part of the screen: Gnome sees my screen as a 4:3 1024x768!!! Also it shows a weird refresh rate of 30hz.
Besides this problem, I can see everything perfectly well (readable chars, no flickers, perfect colours), so that must be a Gnome-related issue...?
Thanks,
Michele.

Hello!
uastasi wrote:Take a look to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf at Monitor Section and try editing your refresh rate.
VertRefresh is set to:
VertRefresh 50.0 - 75.0
which is a setting that doesn't even include the 30.0 that Gnome is showing me in the resolution preferences dialog. Moreover, I see things perfectly well, so I think X is correctly started at 1280x800@60Hz - it's just Gnome that seems to not be understanding that! Anyhow, I tried changing the above line to:
VertRefresh 60.0
but nothing really changes.
You can also switch to tty1 and see if it is an issue related to Gnome.
It is: on text terminals, and even with other X window managers, everything works. It's just Gnome (and it's related GDM) which size themselves wrongly.
Thanks,
Michele.

  • *** How do I get the "really wide" screen look?

I am shooting HDV with a Sony Z1U and love the results, but I wondered about something. I would like my finished projects to have the "really wide" screen look similar to a 2:35 panoramic. I know this is achievable by letterboxing the footage, primarily because there aren't too many panoramic tv's, but my main concern is for the web.
Is there a way to make my online clips appear really wide? Currently I export 480x270 for the web, but like the look I saw on the latest Superman trailer where the dimmensions could be either 480x200 or 650x270 depending on how you scaled down the quicktime window.
Obviously I don't want any squishing but my question is, do I have to shoot with an adaptor to get this look or can I just place a 2:35 matte on my footage and somehow export through quictime conversion so as not to see the black bars on top and bottom?
Hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance...

You can't shoot native 2.35:1 with the Z1U using a special lens, if that's what you're wondering. You must letterbox and/or place your footage in a custom-sized sequence.
To spell that out for you:
    Create a new HDV sequence
With the sequence open and active in the Timeline, open Sequence Settings (Command-0) [that's Zero]
Alter Aspect Ratio to Custom, then alter Frame Size to 1440x816
(It must be done in that order - Aspect Ratio, then Frame Size - to work correctly)
Nest your final sequence (or your completed movie) into this new sequence.
(If your sequence or clip was letterboxed to 2.35:1, it will be windowboxed [black on all 4 sides]. Otherwise, it will be pillarboxed [black on the left & right sides].)
Select your nested sequence or clip(s), then bring up the Remove Attributes dialog (Option-Command-V), select Basic Motion (in case it's not preselected), then click OK
(The trailer should now fill the frame, with any letterboxing cropped off)
File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion and be sure to specify a custom size. Full size would be 1920x816, so calculate according to that ratio (not 1440x816)

I am using Sun Solaris 10 for x86 on Virtual Machine. But i am unable to get a wide screen view. I have a 15.4" screen laptop.
Do i need to change any setting in my Vitual Box????
Presently, i am getting a view having Aspect ration 1:1. i am looking for 16:9 aspect ration screen.

    Hey,
Wide screen view for Solaris on virtual machine? I use the newest [virtualbox for windows|http://www.softsea.com/review/VirtualBox-for-Windows.html] version, what if you use vboxmanage setextradata resolution x*y? Look in the manual for the correct syntax. It might actually work. you can also try to force it in xorg.conf.

  • Sick of wide-screens!

I'm a graphic artist. I need a big screen to see what I'm doing. Ever since Mac started making wide-screens, the screens are wider, but the height is too small! So in order to get the right viewing size for that I'm doing with wide-screen I need to buy a laptop or computer with a HUGE SCREEN. Also I have a full-screen wacom tablet. I don't have 360$ more to buy ANOTHER ONE in full-screen!
I wish you guys would fix this and make them in BOTH SIZES! So we have a choice! Yes wide-screen is good for movies and crap but the new MacBook is useless for detailed graphic design unless you buy an external monitor at 17-20+ inches. But the problem there is you can't take it everywhere with you! Allot of artists travel allot and this doesn't help. Not all of us are rich enough to set up home offices and crap. And if you're on the go all the time you CAN'T!
So in short- PLEASE GET THE NORMAL FULL-SCREEN SIZES BACK!!!!!!!!!!!! This IS NOT fair!
13-inches of WIDE-SCREEN is like buying a tiny portable DVD player, NOT A COMPUTER!
    Thank you.

The res has more height but the actual screen size makes it look smaller. Kinda like having a 12 inch screen set on 1024x768 looks allot smaller so it all fits, vs a 14 inch screen with the same res it looks bigger cause the screens bigger.
When you're doing detailed work it's nice to see what you're doing. Zooming in only works sometimes but if you need to see a large area, having a small screen wouldn't be very helpful. You'd still see the same amount of area but it's smaller. Ya know? Like looking at it from far away.
Neh I just had a moment. I wish this stupid thing had an edit posts. I'd make it less angry. I just don't see why they made it a 13 inch instead of a 15 inch. Hopefully they'll work something out.
It's just bad when you're broke and starting out and trying to get higher up and everything is so much money for anything decent. Then when you get what you need for one thing they change it and you have to update.

  • Video Driver for wide screen

I have a Dell 20" wide screen monitor that requires a resolution of 1680 X 1050. I have the standard ATI Rage 128 graphics card and have updated the software, but that resolution is not available.
The color and clarity look great running at 1280 x 1024, but it is distorting the image width by stretching it.
If anybody else is running a wide screen that has been able to solve this problem, your tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jamie
    G3   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   ATI Rage 128

Sorry, but it seems that the Rage 128 card is only capable of up to 1280x1024 3D, according to ATI.
The image is stretched to fit your screen whenever the display is not running at its native resolution.
The reason for the limited resolution of the card is the VRAM. At 16MB (Rage ORION), it can't really do much.
For a simple solution, you might just consider the Radeon 7000. It will definitely support your LCD's resolution.

  • Poor Quality in Wide-Screen When Exporting HD to Quicktime

    Hello all...
I'm working on a fairly large project in iMovie HD with wide-screen footage from my Sony HDR-HC3 and have hit a wall.
I can't seem to get a good result when I export clips into Quicktime in a wide-screen format. They are a bit choppy & you can see bits of some horizontal lines. The same video exported in full-screen VGA looks great. Any tips...? I basically just want to make good quality QT movies watchable on my computer that maintain the original aspect ratio (and LOOK like they do in iMovie!)
The entire project is around 100GB and I currently have almost 40GB of free space. Any help appreciated!

  • 19 inch wide screen monitor problem

My daughter has my old 450MHz G3 (10.3.9). We bought her a 19 inch wide screen monitor for Christmas. I hooked it up for her and booted the machine. Everything came up fine although the monitor resolution was set to a somewhat funky resolution of 1350? x something, I don't remember exactly. I set it to the monitor's native resolution of 1440 x 900 thru the display preferences and it took that fine.
My daughter shut down the machine that night and when she booted it the next morning, the monitor displays the message "No Input Signal" (or something to the effect). I haven't had a chance to get over there and look at it yet, but the only idea I have to fix the problem offhand is to reset the machine's PRAM.
I'm puzzled that after initially hooking the monitor up the machine had no trouble feeding it a signal, but after a shutdown and reboot, it has a problem. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them.
    B & W G3 450MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I zapped the PRAM on the machine and it booted up fine. The monitor's display was set to 1440 x 900 when it finished booting. I found this a bit mysterious, as I figured zapping the PRAM would reset it to the resolution it had when I first hooked it up.
To test things, I shut the computer down and rebooted it. Once again, the monitor gave the "No Input Signal" message and remained off. So I restarted the computer and did the PRAM zap again and it once again came up fine w/the resolution at 1440 x 900.
I told my daughter to have the machine go to sleep rather than shut it down and I set the energy saver preference to do so. She's had no problems since I did that, but I'd really like to know why shutting the machine down is causing the resolution confusion.
Jeff replied to this thread suggesting to really fix the problem I may need to get a graphics card that natively supports the 1440 x 900 resolution. I've thought of that possibility, but it's not very attractive since, unless I could find a cheap used card, I'd probably have to spend about as much for a card as I could sell the machine for.

  • LR and Wide Screen Monitors

Probably a simple question so kindly bear with me on this one. I have the opportunity of picking up a wide screen monitor in the next couple of days at a reasonable price - 19" 1440 x 900. My question, how will LR appear on this size monitor - will it fill the screen or will I experience black banding at the top and bottom? I like the idea of the further width to increase the panels but hate banding even on TV

    Hi Alan
I have the Dell 2407 monitor (1920 x 1200) which has the same aspect ratio (1:1.6) as your proposed monitor. I find this monitor "perfect" for LR - it looks like LR was designed with this aspect ratio in mind (consider that most digital cameras have a 1:1.5 aspect ratio).
If you hide the left and right panels then you will only have a small "black band" on the left and right of the image. In all other situations this screen will be well utilized.

  • Mov to avi program, sound video import sync problem CS4, creating wide screen

I am using Premiere Pro CS4. I have edited for years on and off, most often I am on set. I just need to set this up right to work.
I have mov footage, and used Pazera to convert it to avi. It does not look right. Here are my convert questions.
    1. is Pazera an ok convert program, or do you have another free, non watermark, high quality program you recommend..?
    2. What is the best convert video and audio to use. Right now I have it as auto and it was awful.
    3. As well I want to use a 1 to 1 ratio or lose the least info, yet it does not seem too have it. It does have, "copy original video stream" is that 1:1...? otherwise it has xvid, divx, mpeg4, wmv...
    4. what is best to put for resolution, it has HD1080, HD720 HD489, and a bunch of others
    1. When I did make a test avi and imported it into Premiere Pro, it does not play properly. The audio runs in realtime and the video skips forward out of sync by about 10x faster. Yet when I play the file in media player, it plays normal. Is this a setting within Premiere Pro, a problem with importing, or the original footage..?
    1. As well, I have some footage with a frigin time code burn window at the bottom, and may want to grab some footage. Is there a way to wide screen the image and cut out the bottom time code, if yes, let me know step by step...

  • Which bag do you use for 14 inch wide screen?

Which bag do you use for 14 inch wide screen?
I got confused when searching for possible candidates. Almost all wide screen bags are designed for 15.4 inch. Few 14 inch bags are fit only for the normal 4:3 screen.
Any advice from you are welcomed!

    Hello,
Other brands you might want to look at are Brenthaven, Case Logic, Eagle Creek, EastPak, EZM, Jan Sport, Kensington, Swiss Army, Targus and Trager.  There is also an earlier message thread here in the forum discussing carrying options, and a quick search of the Internet found some messages here, here and here that you might find of interest.
There really are lots of different solutions when it comes to carrying your ThinkPad, so it might be best to visit a few computer, electronics, office supply and sporting goods stores to find something you like and meets your needs (and budget).  If you do not have your ThinkPad to yet, consider either bringing  a tape measure or a piece of cardboard cut to the dimensions to "test" with bags.

  • How do I create a wide screen movie in Premiere Elements 7 and burn to DVD or Blue Ray?

I have created a movie using project settings of 16:9 and also filmed in this format.  The movie I burned to DVD is not in wide screen. I have requested assistance and given instructions to go through share and select Sony PSP.  However this creates a file which is saved to my computer in mpeg-4 format which will not burn to my DVD.  I am using a Blue Ray burner which looks as if it will only take MP3.  Any suggestions?

I haven't actually done a BluRay yet - waiting to get everything right and,
hopefully, will be able to put more than 1 movie when all is finished!
That's my next challenge. I initially used Share/Disc to burn the DVD with,
I thought, all the settings for widescreen.  It has always worked OK in
Pinnacle.  When I lodged the problem with tech support they sent me
instructions using the Sony PSP.  Interestingly I use a Sony camera, have a
Sony disc burner plus Sony TV and Playstation so you'd think they'd all talk
    to each other!!!

Are your creating and burning your DVD (or is it a BluRay disc?) from
    Premiere Elements by choosing Share/Disc?
If so, it should produce a widescreen disc.
Sometimes DVD players don't automatically read home-burned DVDs as
widescreen and you have to manually switch it. But at the very least the
video should be either letterboxed or stretched.

  • I recently updated Firefox and when I did the screen displays the sites in the centre of the screen and in very small text. I have a newer monitor with a wide screen. How do I go about fixing this problem?

I have a new computer with a wide screen. Before I updated the web sites would fit the width of the screen, now that I've updated the web sites only display in the centre of the screen and they appear squished.

I'm using iOS 7.04 on my iPhone and basically can't use it. The screen is going crazy. I type and special characters show up. I have to hit send more than once (it grays out, then hit again) then it sends. I type words in text or email and it backspaces and deletes my entire message. I tap an application and it starts wiggling to delete. I've reboot several times. I'm looking at restoring, but that is a pain in the arse (it's my work phone). I'm nervous it will not restore properly.
I have iOS 7.03 on iPad and have no issues.

  • Wide Screen Layout Bug?

    Hi, it's me again,
I recently put up an update for the website that I have been working on that makes the site mobile friendly. Three different layouts, 1 each media query, but now I'm facing a problem that is kind of strange to me. I'm hoping there is an easy fix for this, it seems like something that could be fixed by readjusting the meda queries min-width and max-width, but after tinkering around with it for a bit I had no luck.
I am using Dreamweaver 5.5, the site works on Desktops, Tablets, and Phones, but the problem is on some computers (from what I seen, only on the wide screen computer) the website layout is mixed up and out of place. Anyone who might come to this thread to help me might look at the site on their monitors and see that the site works fine, while others who are most likely using a wider screen monitor will see the problem that I am facing.
    http://showcasenc.com/
Above is the website that I am trying to get fixed up, would anyone be able to help me pinpoint the problem? As usual, I greatly appreciate any and all help offered.
I'm sorry to have made frequent trips to this board for help, but this recent update that I have been working on (making the site mobile friendly) has been stressful and challenging. The people from this forum have been of tremendous help and I'm already very thankful. I feel I'm nearing the end of this update process, I just need to get some of these bugs (like the one described above) cleaned up.
