LOOK HERE FOR ACTIVATION PROBLEMS!!!

I hope this helped it seems that i got extremly lucky with my iPhone i had been syncing my iPhone through iTunes for about 7 hours. I tried calling all different numbers none were working for me. So i decided to turn off the phone and turn it back on. As soon i it came to the home screen it said activating with AT&T and with in seconds it said activation complete and i was on my way with my phone. Everything worked i got incoming messages and was able to use edge and wifi along with out going data. I hope this helps anyone who needs it or is having problems syncing up.

Heres the whole story i got my phone pluged it in and went through all the procedures untile the end were they tell you they are going to send you an email. I waited about 5 hours and nothing had happened still the same screen with the emergency call and all. Then i took it off the cord (not in dock just usb) and had if off for about an hour. Then put it back on woried it would mess it up. After a another hour or so i figured i might as well turn it on and then off. So with it still pluged in i turned it off waited a few seconds then powered it back on. After about 30 seconds it came to the same screen with the emergency call and then right away it said AT&T activation in progress or something like that then within a few more seconds it said activation complete and everything was working.
Hoped this helps and wasnt just luck on my part

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
First, empty the Trash, if possible.

Help! My iPad's screen is black and unresponsive, but when I plug it in I can hear it make the noise it normally would. I'm unsure what to do and I've been looking all over the internet for solutions and so far none are working.

As I mentioned, the screen is black and unresponsive. However when ever I plug it into either my charger or my lap top it will make the expected sounds, it also [when plugged into my computer] opens up iTunes how ever the device can't be seen on the side bar. So far to resolve the issue I've tried.
- Attempting to turn it on
- A reset using the home/sleep button and the power button
- Plugging it into my computer to see if I can get it working through iTunes [Which so far is fruitless]
- Holding 3 fingers down in the screen in case my screen curtain was enabled [Nothing happened with that either]
- Putting it face down over my knee and slapping the back in case a cable was lose [Done this repeatedly and nothing happened]
I don't know what's wrong with it and I've been searching for solutions for about 2-3 hour's now. I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me as I would like to go through as many options as possible before trying to take it into the apple store.
[Side note I had also just updated my iPad two nights before the problems began to occur to the iOS 8 technology.My version of iPad is the iPad 2 with 16GB of memory. I'm not sure how much information will be relevant but I'll give as much as possible is someone is able to help me.]

Apple does not replace screens and your iPad is clearly out of warranty, not that accidental damage would be covered anyway. If you want to try to have your iPad fixed, there are 3rd party repair centers you can try. In your google search bar type the following:
"ipad repair "xxxxx"
Put your city in the "xxxx" for example, "tampa, fl"
There will likely be some options you could investigate.
Or, you could sell your iPad, even damaged to Gazelle.com and get yourself a shiny new iPad. And if you do, make sure you add AppleCare+ for $99. This not only increases your Apple technical support for two full years, but would get you up to two iPad replacements at $49 each.

thanks for the quick reply. I had the same idea already yesterday. I use Norton Internet Security for a long time now without any problems. I think this a Apple or Microsoft problem, because the popup window which appear come from Windows DEP. I got no message from the firewall with any problem. I check the log files from Norton and Windows already but find nothing. This is a very strange problem. In the past I have had a lot of other problems with iTunes upgrades. Everytime I accept the installation of the newest version I got errors regarding missing "msi" files.

MSVCR80.dll is missing from my computer and its not letting me open my iTunes. I looked online for a solution and it said to completely reintstall everything iTunes. I'm worried that everything will get deleted off my phone due to my backups. Help?

I searched for solutions and they all said to delete everything and anything that has to do with my iTunes off my computer and to reinstall iTunes. They all also saud that my backups will still be intacked but im still not sure. Help?!

Put a copy of the iTunes library and the backups on an external drive. While the reinstallation process normally doesn't delete those, other things can.

Hello!
You just need to install "libgnomeui". This package (or some of it dependencies... I never "investigated" what exactly happens) provides what is necessary to make Qt applications use the GTK theme. Probably it is going to work right after the installation. If not, try to logoff/login or restart the computer. And, as a "last resort" (it should not be necessary), change the Qt settings, on "qtconfig", to make it use the GTK+ Gui Style.
I hope this have worked. Anything else, just ask!

If this is similar to what's happening with your shuffle 2g ipod, I may have a weird solution. I spent a few nights troubleshooting this issue and searching many many sites and forums for solutions, all without success. Everytime I plugged the ipod in, XP gave one of the errors at the above URL. I did confirm on another pc that the shuffle was definitely working, because it updated and synched flawlessly. What I finally did to solve the issue was........... remove service pack 2. I know that's a bass ackward solution but it worked! I can now plug my shuffle in and it works everytime, perfectly. The only thing I can say for sure is it's something to do with usb 2.0 on my motherboard. It's a via board btw, with an apollo 333 chipset. Try it for yourself, and let's see if it works. Apple or some other company(you know who) needs to release a patch for this as it seems to be a very common problem.

Hackers - What to look out for and prevention!?

Hi, I was just looking through my logs and such and saw some alot of gobbly gook. It made me nervous. so I was wondering what are the main tips on detecting a Hacker, spotting Hacking attempts and prevention of Hackers?
I understand that I depends on what kit you have and such and that your computer has to make connections with others to use the internet but what do I and every other average Apple user need to look out for in logs on modems, firewalls and applications.
I personaly have looked at my logs on my Netgear Modem and logs on my System Profiler application. I see connections to various things but i'm no good at networking. All I know is to have my firewall on!
Also...I am always nervous when using Bit Torrent, do I have any need to be?

It's not always true that an invalid access is an attack. For example, if your firewall application reports that the misused source port is a high port number, it might be a trigger packet. Some ISP may configure the servers system incorrectly or insufficiently. Some organization or a group of companies may send scanning packets to P2P users in a special way in order to improve heavy WAN traffics caused by P2P software users. You might mis-configure your modem or router firewall system or a built-in firewall has a bug, etc.
If a source port number is in the rage between 49152 and 65535, it is normally either dynamic or private ports. Dynamic ports are randomly assigned, and private ports are used by OS software or applications. By seeing any high ports with other logs events, you may guess whether someone attacks your node, about his/her skills/ability and the time zone. You may see one of high ports displaying on Netstat program for Network Utility application when pressing "Display the state of all current socket connections"-- udp4 0 0 localhost.xxxxx. Netstat may help to know who is on networks but not in real time. You need to refresh the button manually.
Here are two basic points:
* It is important to know yourself and think of your computer configurations before you start thinking who is there or your enemy.
* The most important matter in computer security is to be aware, and watch the systems carefully something most people do not do. For example, check if asl.log facility status with the level integer value displays differently from regular bases. If system.log or console.log reports that your computer name and the host name are changed, you may be facing to a serious security situation.
If you want to see whether your ISP blocks ports or you have opened ports, security scan service such as grc.com (Shields UP), dshield.org or seifried.org are available on the Internet.
Mac OS X Tiger built-in firewall (ipfw) has basic features. You can add rule-sets if you want. See for example here. Normally, you do not need to change the default rule-sets that blocks unwanted incoming packets.
Here is how to read about a log example for Mac OS X built-in firewall:
ipfw: 64000 Deny TCP 123.456.78.900:4990 444.555.66.777:1433 in via en1
The ipfw rule-set 64000 denies a Transmission Control Protocol IP packet sent by the source address 123.456.78.900 via the port number 4990 to attempt an invalid access to the destination address 444.555.66.777 targeting to the port 1433 in via your interface "AirPort." The destination address in this case is your local IP address, but not a remote IP address assigned for your ISP (for instance) node. The BSD device name for Built-in Ethernet interface is "en0." "en1" is used for AirPort or the first PCI Ethernet card if you install one.
You see the Mac OS X built-in firewall do not tell you the service name of a misused port number and the host name of the source IP address in real time. Therefore, it may be uncomfortable to analyze the background in details-- especially, if events of the firewall log would be flooded by access attempted every minute or more frequently. You may not even be able to send an e-mail to abuse team who is responsible for the source IP address net block to ask for the investigation if you want to do so. To send an enquiry has two meaning-- suggesting their server vulnerability or insufficient configuration and making a good use of their reply to your analysis.
In this case, an unassigned port number 4990 is misused by someone directly or indirectly (e.g. bot, botarmy, etc.) from the server 123.456.78.900, and the port 1433 for sniffing if a Microsoft SQL Server (Windows related) is running on your machine. There is also known history that some viruses try to exploit vulnerabilities in Microsoft SQL Server. The most known ports being misused in recent days are 8 (ICMP ping) 135, 139, 445 and ports for Trojan Horses and P2P technology driven software such as BitTorrent-- See also this world map, http://isc.sans.org/.
You may think about why bad IP packets pass through your ISP servers especially if servers are configured with a firewall system.
If you want to know more about Transmission Control Protocol specification, find "RFC 793" documentation on the Internet. All assigned port numbers document is available at www.iana.org.
If you are interested in third-party firewall, DoorStop X and Who's There are very good applications. You'll see it when you use their trial version with the full features.
Good firewall applications may protect your computer from various invalid access attempts but not for the real solution. Good packet analyzing (Sniffers) applications may help to inform you a result of analysis but not for the real solution. End-users, ISPs and the authorities need to run to the same direction together.

Slow "looking up" for domain first time every session in firefox 4 RC1

I hope I posted this on the correct site, because I was doubting on whether post it here or on the networking subforum (or even another place I didn't thought about).
Every time I launch firefox 4 (using AUR's firefox-pgo-beta 4.0rc1build1-3) and use it to search any website, lets say google.com (yes, what is going to be described happens even with google) firefox is "looking up for google" for like 5 or so seconds. After that, the page loads fast, no problem with speed.
But this happens only the first time I load any website, if I load it again without closing FF, it will load fast, without that 5 sec delay.
What drives me lets say crazy is that this does NOT happen with: Chromium, Firefox(3.6) used in a VirtualMachine (everything said until this point, under Arch), or FF4 or Chrome installations on my Windows 7 partition. In addition, this seems to only happen when using my laptom on my house, as when conected to the college wifi that delay is not present.

I'm currently using a Netgear CG3100D router provided by Spanish' ISP ONO, with 50Mb download / 3Mb upload conection working without problems even in firefox4 under Arch (tested using Speedtest.net and some downloads). The only trouble seems to be those first loads of domains.
I've tried until now to solve any trouble like this by myself, and most times I managed to do it searching info on the internet, but no clue found on this.
PS: really nice distribution, makes me think i really found the disribution that suits 100% with me. Oh, BTW, awesome wiki and comunity, thanks to both I almost got all the possible troubles related to my laptop making Arch running out of the box.

Following the steps of the wiki and this post I've created the configs file for lirc. But something is not working and I don't know how to find out what.

Solve it!
Looks like my /etc/lirc/lircd.conf was wrong.
The irrecord is generating a wrong config with my hp rc-6 remote.
I was able to fix it with this post
