Gnome panel hogging all of system resources!

What's up with this? Why might gnome panel be using so much CPU? This started today. Here's the screeny:
Might it have anything to do with the fact that I did "init 3" then "init 5" to restart X?

  • Why is mail so slow and uses all of system resources?

I want to use Mail on my Macbook Air 2010.  I use it on my iPhone with no problems at all.  I have several gmail accounts and me.com accounts.  I have tried even just using only my main account in Mail.  I am now using a system resource monitor and can see that Mail takes up 100% of resources while appearing to do nothing.  When I click on Sent or Drafts, it often shows nothing when I know that there should be stuff there.  I have tried "rebuild" which did not seem to do anything.  Also, it takes forever to quit.
I cannot understand why this program does not work for me.  I have not done anything out the ordinary that I am aware of.  Does it not work well with gmail accounts?  If so, why does the iPhone version handle gmail so well?
I will try that, just using my iCloud account only.  I just want to make sure that when I mail a link from safari or a photo from iPhoto, that it actually goes out and goes in a reasonable amount of time.
Mail for me is a system resource hog.  I am afraid to open it.

I stopped all processes and deleted all accounts and started over with the gmail account.  This time, I chose the option to not store anything locally.  It warned me that I would not be able to read email offline.  When I clicked "save" from preferences, it froze for about an hour with CPU maxed out.  I am going to force quit mail, delete the account again and just go with my fresh iCloud account.  I can set my gmail account to forward messages and then I can freely delete them from the iCloud account knowing that they are still there in gmail.  I guess this will work ok.  I just won't be able to send out from my gmail account from Mail which will confuse some recipients and then lead to people sending mail to the wrong account.
I wish there was an option in Mail to "act like iOS Mail."  I believe that would solve my problem.

  • Gnome panel preferences on file system somewhere

I've been wanting to clone my gnome panels to another user.  I'm sure the info for which widgets, clocks, etc. is stored somewhere in ~ but I have idea where.  Does anyone?

its in ~/.gconf/apps/panel. don't know if you can just copy the directory over though. just google 'how to use gconf' or something

  • Eating all my system resources

One extra problem: iTunes seems to be using all of my processor-resources. Right now, it's playing just a mp3-song and is using up to 89% of my processor capacity (G4, 1,5Ghz, 1.25Gb RAM).
Does anybody else have this problem and: what to do about it?

seems not te be anwered ... Let's just wait for a nice update from apple then.

  • Interactive form takes 10-15 minutes to open and exhausts system resources.

The version of Livecycle designer am using is 7.1
The interactive form that I designed is taking like 10-15 minutes to open and while its opening, its taking all the system resources as I see a prompt on the task bar besides time/date  "Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low".
The tutorial project works fine, the TravelRequest.pdf opens just fine: https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/library/user-interface-technology/wd%20java/wdjava%20archive/offline%20interactive%20pdf%20form%20using%20download.pdf
Would installing version 8.0 solve this ?
    I am on NWDS sp18.

  • Gnome Panel applet that shows output of system command.

    Hi all;
Because of the recent hostile takeover of #archlinux channel by tilling WM fanatics..    I will ask here..
Does any one know of a Gnome Panel applet that shows the output of system command of your choice?
For people who Conky is a bit too much and they only want a simple piece of data available (like what is the current IP on ppp0 interface) like me..  this is a necessity.
If its not in existence I would probably make one.. shouldn't take long, I also would like to hear if there is any interest.
    Thanks

That's exactly what I was looking for!  Thank you!
    Changed code to:
    $dism = "X:\Windows\System32\Cmd.exe /c start CMD /k dism /apply-image /imagefile:D:\W7x86.wim /index:1 /applydir:C:\"
And voila, new window opened with the live output of dism.
new... and have a glazed over look about my eyes to prove it...

    Client OS: Windows XP Professional

I encountered a few instances where SQL Developer hogs all CPU resources on my Windows XP notebook.
I usually have to kill the SQL Developer process.
I have noticed this happening occasionally when I :
    1. hit Enter at the SQL Worksheet window
    2. hit F9 at the SQL Worksheet window - the query does not start
How do I collect a dump or some kind of debug information when the above happens ?

How do I collect a dump or some kind of debug

When sqldeveloper starts hogging cpu, go to the console window and type ctrl-break. You should get a thread dump.

  • GNOME-Panel looks funny and the system is slow? [SOLVED]

My up to date installation with Arch started to work really slow today. Even the animation when you open a new tab in Firefox lags like hell. And at about the same time my GNOME panel started looking funny:
As you can se the toogle button looks weird to. Its not my theme nor the Murrine engine.
This is how it should be:
I cant remeber doing anything out of the ordinary? It kinda just happend. I have no idea at all whats causing it, so I dont now how to debug the problem? I feel like a complete noob atm.

You can grep the date from the pacman.log output to show you what was upgraded on that day.
I meant about 2 days, it could be more or less. I've checked the log pretty thoroughly serveral days back but I cant find anything, but I dont trust myself either though.

  • Why the video playback stotter but audio is ok and all system resources are ok as well?

    Hi,
I'm using Premiere Elements 12 and prepared a project using m2ts files of my sony camera. When I started the project, everything was find, editing easy. Now, some months later I wanted to finish the project on the same laptop ( Intel Cor i5-4200 2,50GHz, 8GB RAM, 64 bit Windwos 8.1, 1TB Hybrid HDD, dual graphic: Intel HD Graphics 4600 and NVIDIA GeForce GT740M). The system resources are not completly used during the playback, maybe 10 - 15% usage, RAM is between 20 and 50% usage, harddrive usage is between 10 and 40% usage. Video data are stored local on the harddrive (not on USB or network).
When I open the original files in e.g. VLC or Media Player the playback is perfect, no interupts. The playback of rendered elements in Premiere Elements is without interupts as well. Only "native", untouched HD material stotters after a short time I'm working on the project. It's the same for other videos, when I start a new project. It's anoying me because it was the reason why I decided for the SW.
I deinstalled Premiere Elements completly, used also CCleaner to remove unused registry entries... reinstalled it completly after some restarts... updated to 12.1.0.0 but after an afternoon of installation, the same issue is back.
Who can help me to fix it? Thanks for your feedback.

Player version 7.1.6 is a very old version but it should play H264 / AAC videos without issue.

  • Openbox + Gnome-Panel

I've been tinkering around with openbox, fluxbox, pypanel, etc, trying to find the perfect WM setup. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I'm slow in making decisions as I have to play with everything to my satisfaction before making a choice. I've been a Gnome user for the past year and a half, since that's what I started with in Ubuntu.
One of the possibilities I threw around for a while was using Openbox with Gnome Panel. I eventually decided against it, but it occurred to me that I've never seen nor heard of anyone using OB with gnome-panel, although it is obviously feasible.
So, just curious, anyone out there use that combination?

The reason you don't see many screenshots of Openbox with gnome-panel is because gnome-panel is a resource hog that consumes upwards of 30MB of RAM--and that's without applets.  Add a bunch of applets to it and you'll see it increase further.
As has been commented here, many users run Openbox/GNOME. This is basically a full GNOME session, except that the Metacity window manager is replaced by Openbox.
At any rate, try it for yourself...you might like it.  Then again, if you're a speed/minimalist perfectionist, I can guarantee there are faster & lighter solutions, such as:
    * Pypanel
    * Tint
    * Visibility
Then there's the seemingly less obvious choice of running no panel at all, which is what I do when I run Openbox.  After all, it includes a desktop managing menu by default--all that's missing is a clock and a system try (ala conky/trayer).

  • Excel 2010 not enough system resources to display completely

I have searched the web high and low for an answer to this issue we are having with one user who uses Excel 2010 quite extensively and I have not been able to find an answer that resolves the issue.
She keeps getting the error message "Not enough system resources to display completely."  The spreadsheet in question is a simple two worksheet file that she does simple calculations on.  Her PC is an HP Elitebook 8560w (only 1 month
old) with an i7 Intel processor, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD with over 300GB free, Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) with all the latest patches and updates & Office 2010 Professional (32-bit).  The video and printer drivers are all update to the latest versions.
The spreadsheet is one she has used before on her older Windows XP Pro SP3 desktop with no problems.   We have tried the "set the Zoom to 100% or less" resolution that has been mentioned all over the web and it does not work.
We are still having this issue.  Does anyone know how to resolve this in Excel 2010.  I have seen the "solutions" for Excel XP, 7, 2000, 2003 and 2007 and they don't seem to work, or at least the ones I have tried!  :-)
Would welcome all serious suggestions.  Mahalo Nui Loa!

I've had this problem on several computers on our network.  I found various recommendations, but no solid answers.  I have resolved this problem on two computers with
just the first steps performed.  The third computer require also following the step highlighted in yellow below:
    Deleted all temp files by:
Start > Run > enter %temp% in the search box and press Enter
    Delete everything from this folder
Cleared Recent Docs List & Lower Number Displaying:
File > Options > Advanced > Scroll to Display category > change number of recent documents.  To clear the list, set this to 0 and save.  You can adjust up after that if you choose.
Delete files from the following folders:
(may have to view hidden files – top corner drop down > folder options > view tab > Hidden files and folders > select Show hidden files, folders and drives.
    Local Service:
    %windir%\ServicesProfiles\LocalService\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\CryptnetUrlCache\Content
    %windir%\ServicesProfiles\LocalService\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\CryptnetUrlCache\MetaData
    Network Service:
    %windir%\ServicesProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\CryptnetUrlCache\Content
    %windir%\ServicesProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\CryptnetUrlCache\MetaData
    LocalSystem:
    %windir%\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\CryptnetUrlCache\Content
    %windir%\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\CryptnetUrlCache\MetaData
The above process worked to prevent this problem on two machines, but not another.  On the one that this didn’t work, I also
Start > Programs > Windows Update > View Update History.  Look for KB# 2597166
If it exists, click it and uninstall.
Can also try, though I didn’t.  I may do this first, but I didn’t feel this was my issue.
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Select Office > Change > Run Repair

  • NSTask semi-Heavy program eats up system resource fork

So I have a program that is calling a timer that is running an NSTask every 2 seconds, it isn't a very CPU or RAM dependent program,
0.3 cpu (when the task is running) 8.3MB ram max.
After about 10 minutes or so my system will freeze up due to a 'resource fork being busy'. I'm assuming it is the repeated forking of an NSTask that is eating up resource forks, but I haven't found a solution. Any have any ideas?
P.S on an unrelated note I made a new developers account so I could access some of the benefits of having one and I tried to log onto the dev forums but I won't allow me to it just goes to the login page every time I hit the Log In button on the devforums.apple.com page. Any one else experiencing this

At 5 minutes in use Applications>Utilities>ActivityMonitor to look at how many processes are in the system. If you set the panel for 'All Processes, Hierarchically' it will be obvious if your program's children are staying in the system.
It is not always possible to terminate the receiver because it might be ignoring the terminate signal. terminate sends SIGTERM.

  • Wallpaper behind gnome-panel using compiz

When I use compiz to set the wallpaper for me, I have 6 different wallpapers for my 6 'desktops'. I only have a transparent gnome-panel at the top. Problem is, the wallpaper of the first desktop will show on all the other desktops through the panel, and not the wallpaper that was assigned. Is this a common fault?

The transparency of the gnome-panel is 'fake', in that it actually paints the desktop (done by Gnome without knowledge of Compiz). If you really want a transparent part of the panel, try using the greenscreen plugin for compiz (I think its not developed anymore, and it barely made beta, but its the only thing of its type), google for it. I found it easier in the end to just auto-hide the panel and rely on some alternative like cairo-dock.
EDIT: Because I'm a nice person, and because I wanted to try it out myself, [url=http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=29209]here's the AUR package for the greenscreen plugin. It works on my system, going to try some interesting conkies with it soon.
